When I suffered a stroke two years ago, one of the results was I now have Aphasia. It is a language disorder in which I have trouble finding words, mix up words (names, mixing right and left, etc...), or have trouble completing sentences.
I have found a Pathfinder game in which everyone is great about my disability. I have pages of dialog typed up that I can use to "speak in character " without having to fear losing my words. The game has been such a blessing.
My new goal is to run a Pathfinder campaign for others with Aphasia. This will help me and them cope with dealing with our disabilities while also having fun. I would like to find a speech therapist who would help me run it.

Thank you for this, Ms. Dawn. I am autistic, and I'm just getting back into gaming again after a long hiatus. Thank you for these tips. I think they will help me. 🙂

Yay! Are you playing the same system as before or switching systems or editions?

    I watch to learn.
I have a friend in our group that has adhd. He plays a wizard in 3.5 at 20th level. He has a three ring binder full of his characters abilities, spells and whatever else he needs.
So I’m looking to learn how to DM for different people. I would like to DM at conventions again sometime

As a player, I doodle as my nervous tic (EDIT: nervous habit). To keep myself invested in the game. I doodle what’s going on in the game at that moment as visual notes.

i don't think you can doodle as a tic? tics are sudden involuntary movements, so that doesn't really match your description, especially if it benefits you. i don't mean this as an attack, i just think you're thinking of something else!! :]] (i am genuinely sorry if this seems passive aggressive aaaah)

@@frodomeowsI appreciate the correction. I made an edit.

I was thinking of a different type of player, but this makes more sense.

I just did my first DND game ever (a one shot) where my character wasn't supposed to be good at remembering things. I knew to remember things I'd have to take notes. So I purposefully didn't take notes and it was perfect because I genuinely didn't remember anything XD

As an autistic adult who also has ADHD, I've found that the GM seat is so much easier for me, since I'm engaged directly in the game all the time rather than tuning in and out. I also have narrowed down the kinds of games I prefer (e.g. some games literally frustrate specific aspects of my autism). When playing, I have to take copious notes as I go just to stay focused - it's not so much about the memory as trying to manage my concentration.

even though i may be called neuro typical [ugh spelling] i still need to take time to learn a game even if i read the rule books, i am tactile, auditory, and visual for my learning not just one

i teach karate and have several students that are neuro divergent so as an instructor i learn every class how to approach certain lessons differently in order to have everyone able to pick up the teachings. each class is different which is an awesome challenge for me to be able to communicate what i am trying to teach.

for me whether it is dnd or karate class, communication is the key between the game host and the players to make sure everyone can either learn or at least play comfortably in order to have fun. If other players are not comfortable playing the game with neurodivergent players, then maybe they can find a new table, but hopefully after a conversation about this to start the game everyone will be good to go. Be open minded and inclusive.
