PVC shards can't be accurately detected by an X-ray. They have to hunt the pieces down by hand with a scalpel. That's enough reason not to use it.

Maybe I like PVC shrapnel in my chest, legs, and face?!... Gosh cant a guy just enjoy his ambulance ride and visit to the ER? LOL I'm sorry it's not funny but it kinda is at the same time. I get it You would think PVC would work cause it looks to be about the same OD and ID overall. Though if you have a 4 inch Salute dont ya think your gonna wanna use professional equipment at that point? Granite not everyone is using Salutes but even just Max Load 60s. You can hear them from a mile away easily! Now if ur using festival balls I could see it maybe working but even then why go cheap? If it gets stuck the black and the flash powder that's packed in those shells is enough to essentially turn it into a pipe bomb that then is gonna leave your face and body torn up. So I guess my point is always use HDPE. UNLESS Your using Festival Balls then Fiber glass works just fine. Though Fiber Glass over time will bust open on ya. HDPE mortars will burst too actually. If you load about 8 ( 60 Gram ) Shells in a HDPE mortar back to back the mortar itself will over heatsl start to melt your shell will get stuck and or you'll get a low break and someone can easily get hurt. Moral of the story use as professional like things as possible get racks and do 1 shell out of a mortar at a time. That's your safest best bet and your Mortars should last a long time.

neither can Glass , I have a piece of glass in my toe , that only recently part of it came out from years back. they prayed my toed to see if there was something wrong with my toe because it was swelling and turning purple and causing my excruciating pain. They ended up just saying it was a corn , was using corn remover and it started bleeding and skin started peeling , after about a week I felt something sharp and pokey at the top my skin , grabbed tweezers , pulled it out and lo behold . It was a pretty decent sized piece of glass .

My first rack was from Pyroboom and had a canister shell blow in the tube. The HDPE tube bowed and had a hole in it, but it didn't shatter or send any shards. The rack cracked, but held its integrity enough to fire off the rest of the shells without issue. I've ordered two more racks from Pyroboom since. Great company, great customer service.

I was planning to start building a massive mortar rack for next year, initially I just thought PVC should work, but I'm glad I took the 30 seconds to search out what to use for reliability, I may have just saved a lot of peoples lives that will be at my next display. I still plan to have the entire rack secured inside 1" thick plywood walls, at least 2-3' high, but will definitely not go the cheap route on this project now.

"What about steal mortar tubes?" I think this is what you meant. You should not use steel tubes. There are 3 options when shooting mortar shells and I believe HDPE is the best. So you have HDPE, Fiberglass and cardboard as your 3 options. Hope this helps.

I tried using the PVC tube like you suggested. But I didn't know you weren't supposed to put the shell upside down to fire it since it didn't say "top" on it. But I only used a small 1.75" by 5" canister shell, thank God, so the explosion was fairly small and contained to just my porch, bedroom and living room. There were tiny slivers of plastic embedded everywhere, including my face. I wish you would have at least mentioned that PVC pipe is not good to use. After the ambulance arrived, an attorney came that had followed them and wanted your full name and address. The emergency room doctors say I lost the full use of my left hand and left eye and ear. They also found a small hole in my heart. And after all the blood transfusions and operations, the psychiatrist wouldn't stop asking me where I got this misleading info to do such a stupid thing. So please provide your full name and address for my attorney and shrink.

I’ve welded a steel rack with 3/32 wall thickness pipe and never had any issues plus if the frame is steel it helps hold it up so it doesn’t tip over on rough ground just need a big enough plate to give it support. The steel is more than strong enough to shoot consumer mortars out of and it can take the heat of you are blowing off a lot of them at a time since the melting point is 2500 degrees Fahrenheit or somewhere around there I’ve put mortars in upside down in it when I was drunk with friends one time it didn’t even crack or expand what so ever it will do the job especially if your shooting off 1.3G fireworks out of it

He definitely added some muscle when hitting the PVC... Interesting if he hit the other pipe as hard?
