Testing Canister Shells & Fusing Techniques to Fire like a Cake

  • After our tests we can confirm that the only inconsistency lies within the time-fuse built into the shell itself. That is out of our control. What IS in our control is the pace at which the shells leave the mortar rack tubes. We started with the 10 second a ft fuse then the 3 second a ft fuse. Then, we tested the 0.03-1.25 second a ft quick fuse and finally the 0.01-0.03 second super quick hobby fuse. I think our favorite pace was definitely the 1.25 second quick fuse since the shells exited the tube at the same pace as a 1/1 cake would fire. Hope this helps and hope you all enjoyed!

      It would be smart if a manufacturer would make a 500 mine cake with 1.75' tubes fib/HD tubes. So it just shot a mine but you can drop you favorite Canerster shells inside. They could also make single shot 1.75' mines. You pop the top of drop in a canister shell put in rack and fuse the them all together. Every shell then has a mine effective.

    This seems like a good idea for pre-staging a show. I don't like setting up my racks too soon and having them sit in the garage but with this technique you could get all your timings down and run the fuse days in advance and then dump the shells in day of in 30 minutes. Worst case your fuse goes off which is a lot safer than having a rack go off. It also looks like it would be cleaner for taping against fuse jump.

    If your going to make videos like this showing people how to do this custom dangerous stuff please start w the basics. Don't pile up shells in your work space. Stabilize your racks and set the the rack the opposite way to the crowd or the safe area , where u were standing. It makes a difference. It only takes once. U can clearly see the rack rocking. I can't believe you didn't put a brace on it after that. These are people's lives at risk. Every pyro thinks he's a pro and then a lady or kid gets hurt at his show

    I can confirm that no mater how the lift powder is contained in the bottom of the tube, be it taped into the shell or just dumped in the tube it will have absolutely no deference in lifting the shell whatsoever! The key here is the width of the shell in the tube, be there not to large of a gap between the tube wall and the shell, no matter how the lift powder is attached or unattached to the shell if the shell is the right size for the tube “meaning it has no more then a 5mm to 7mm gap to the tube wall when loaded, and if the lift powder was correctly weighed for the shell, it will fire.” ✌🏼

    I just did my whole show last night the way you showed how to cake fuse mortars. 265 mortars and 63 cakes. I tested a few identical mortars side by side the week before. I did notice about 10-15 ft less in lift. It wasn't too noticeable so I decided to fuse them all cake style. It was worth being able to fire them EXACTLY when you want to with a firing system, but I will pry not be doing it again. HUGE problem is that not all cannisters are the same. I had about 20% of the mortars break EXTREMELY low, like dangerously low shooting crackle pretty close to the spectators. You could masking tape the cannisters to the point of being a tight fit in the tube, but that's way too much time for every mortar. Maybe just a finale rack? It is a neat concept and I did use half fiberglass tubes with no issues.

      Firework fuse is 2-3mm thick so definitely no bigger than 4 mm. Gives enough room to slide the fuse in without having to worry about hurting the fuse or creating too big of a hole to fill in with the glue

    Hey Cody, I really hope you see this, I wanted to ask you a question about the fusing in this video.
    We are looking to do something similar, but had an idea on how to do it without all of the small length fuses, and wanted your opinion on it.
    Would it be possible to drill your holes in your tubes, (as you did here), but instead of drilling them at angles, drill them straight across the tube, and then just run one long fuse through each one tube? Then there's no gluing to keep each individual fuse in place, and it's one fuse going all the way through your rack. I'm curious if you think this will work! Please respond, thanks.

    I understand the whole concept, and it is quite impressive. If you fused the shells "like normal" and use the Quick Fuse on top of the rack, you would get the same effect, but you would have to wait about 3 more seconds after the quick fuse is lit. That eliminates the drilling, fusing, and glueing at the bottom of the tubes. Is it worth all that work, or would waiting 3 more seconds give you the same exact effect?

    • @mattm3901
      @mattm3901 Рік тому +1

      If you're trying to time the effect, it is typically much easier to do with shorter and faster fuse because you are removing potential inconsistency. If you just want a rapid fire finale or fan effect without specific timing, you can just fuse the top of the rack as you would normally. This is most important when timing between shots is a concern, such as in fan sweep or slice effects.

    • @melvinspringer5486
      @melvinspringer5486 Рік тому

      @@mattm3901 I like your thought process Matt. Makes perfect sense. I've been doing manual lighting of fuses for many years, and I have gotten the timing down pretty accurately by using measured length, spacing,and fuse styles. I guess I'm proud of myself because I know the difficulty of the process, and to be able to watch my own builds launch without having to touch any of my boards during a show gives me that adrenaline rush. When I have spectators ask me which type of control system I use, I tell them the old school manual fuse lighting system. They give me that stare of confusion. Ha. I'm still learning new tricks everyday, and I should have been a pyrotechnician, instead of a musician. 🤣 I value someone's opinion/explanation of processes they've adapted Very Much! So thanks for the explanation in detail. 💯💪

Lifting the can another 25-100 feet, I think the shell would have already gone off before max height. Guess you should experiment. I remember 2" shell 200 ft safety distance, 3" shell 300ft and so on.

    You said to watch out for the round car board circles at the bottom of the tubes??? They should not be any since you have removed them at the start of the process when loading the shells. Nice video Guys, I enjoyed it!

    This opens up opportunities for variations in the display. Multiple racks with variations in the timing within groups in a rack. For the pyro-technician, electrical fusing gives the best control. However, for the occasional technician/pyro-artist, using timing through fusing would provide a great show.

    Love the idea, what would happen if you added some stars to the lift charge for a potential mine effect?
