I was very disappointed when I watched your review video. You only reviewed the cameras in the standard profile. You did not mention that the X4 has worse dynamic range than the X3 in HDR video.
As always ... good review. After watching Peter McKinnon pretend to be speechless and overwhelmed (as if he's never heard of 360 video) it's good to listen to someone who's been doing 360 for years give an honest, realistic opinion of this camera.
I stopped watching that video when they went to fly RedBull planes. I'm going to "retire" my X2 (putting it into reserve, may be using it for a second angle in some cases) and buy the X4.
I was about to buy X3 in April 2023 but due to some issues this camera had I decided to wait and man it was worth it! I've yesterday bought X4 and will give it a try during my next trip in 2 weeks :).
Just two notes: Lens guards not installed as directed (blue dot needs to be at bottom) and the cover is not a safety/guard feature - it’s a heat related skin to make it more comfortable to hold camera when it gets very hot shooting 8K for long stints. So not included as an actual safety case.
I was close to getting the 1-inch....think I"ll do the X4 for my first 360 camera. I'm guessing they may do an 8K 1-inch version in a year or two...? Hey, with the X4, can you pull the footage in directly to a NLE like Davinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro X for editing or do you have to run it through Insta360 software first? Thank you in advance!! CC
My Dad showed me his 360 Ace last weekend and said he wished he had an X3. First time I'd seen a 360 cam so I've been watching a lot of your videos on that and just seen this and it's the 60FPS & low light footage you showed on this vid that has finally sold me. WHIPPED out the credit card and just spent £800 on the X4 with your link. Dive kit, tripod, adhesive mount and chest strap... Will be taking it to Croatia next month to put it to the test. THIS!!!! This is the review I wanted to see. Thank you. I have been frustrated because all the reviews are comparing the X3 to the X4 and are talking as if it's the best update ever to a camera - and not including the very relevant 1-inch into the conversation. I have wanted the 1-inch for VR because of the sensor size, low light performance, and photo quality. I use these cams for VR when we travel, but not as action cameras which is what the X4 seems to be marketed as. I really appreciate your opinion here as it gives a fair fight to all cameras in the conversations. Cheers.
You don't want it (the 1-inch) **for** the sensor size. You want it because the sensor enables those other characteristics you mentioned, low-light & picture quality. Same way you don't "want" a V8 engine, you want the performance it brings.
@@BenClaremont Oh come dude, don't be absurd, you're better than that. A bad 1" sensor will always give worse results than a good 1/1.3 or 1/1.7. And in fact what you want for both of those qualities (low-light & image quality) is *low resolution* so that each pixel gets a larger total share of the light. That's what really makes the difference, it's just that in a larger sensor the pixels are also bigger so accordingly they receive a larger quantity of light per photo site. **_But_** if their technology is bad simply having a large sensor is not going to give you good results. Today's 2L-engines give more power than the V12s from Lamborghini from the 70s. Do you want a V12 because it's bigger? No, you want the result. Don't fall into the "Well gee shucks Cletus, Uhh think me wants the bigger number one!" trap or the "gimme the marketing goodies I've heard about" nonsense that point to a lack of understanding of the actual technology. 🙄
Damn! Thanks for the review, Ben. Love the side-by-side comparison shots. From what I've seen, I'd say the X4 is a pretty big update for Insta360, not just 10-20% better but rather 50% 🤩As a X3 owner myself, I've just ordered the X4 and can't wait to test out both... 8K it is!!!

Almost all the other channels who got to do early reviews, barely shoot 360, let alone action cams. I feel the a lot of the other channels just got paid good to hype it.. even though the hype is well deserved.
I use GoPro 360 exclusively in recent years in my hanggliding UA-cam channel. While I love GoPro product, I am looking for improvement like higher resolution so that when I zoom in an area, I can get some good clarity. I am also looking for better low light performance. I am really excited to learn x4 8k 360 camera. I will for sure order one. Meantime I feel very sad that I will no longer have clear audio and good color once I switch to insta x4. I know some UA-camrs maybe lots UA-camrs say x4 has better color. But looking at their content, I still like GoPro color.
I recently had to use a client GoPro Max whilst filming for an extensive period. I must say I was not impressed with the workflow of the GoPro Quik app compared to Insta360's, which is far more intuitive and overall a lot slicker.
Overheating is a problem. I owned the RS-1Inch and it overheated within 11 minutes and then had a 45min down time while it cooled. Not useable. I returned it after 4 months of fighting with Insta360 to take it back. I have the X3 and haven't had overheating problems and would not be happy with the X4 overheating within 27 minutes. Thanks for covering this important issue of the X4. You're the best Ben.
Been blessed with this super-detailed review! 27min of 8K is not bad at all. I personally still think x4 is a solid upgrade, the higher framerates, especially with 4K100 give it more room for reframing. And after shuffling a few reviews, the low light shots are not bad at all.
Great video been debating if I should get the new X4 or wait for the X3 to drop in price. Will be cool to view my videos in the Pauer view app on my meta quest 2 headset.
This one side protection cover as You mention it, is for the overheating at 8K mode. There is a material in it that keeps it cooler. This is the official description: The Thermo Grip Cover is a standard in-the-box accessory for Insta360 X4. Pick up a spare or replacement. Reduces the surface temperature of X4 and makes it more comfortable to hold when recording in 8K for a long time. Recommended for recording videos in windless environments when the camera is still. Not recommended for skiing, water sports, motorcycling, cycling, and other sports.

Hi Ben, love your work. Thanks for this. I have the RS 1 inch and have reduced heating enormously by keeping the battery out of the case and cable it up the stick. Can you do that with the X4 and will it run cooler?
Thanks- although I’m actually scaling them way back to be less polished. No music, overusing text graphics etc. just bare bones. Makes it much easier to make videos 😀
I just ordered one but hate the fact everyone saying 8k as if it’s not 2 4k cameras and cover 360 degrees instead of a normal 16:9 aspect ratio. Everyone is overhyping quality when in reality the footage you post won’t even come out as good.
Needed this vid. My Insta360 1-Inch just pooped the bed. I'm so tired of fiddling with it's microscopic screen, and now it's having SD card issues....I'm over it. I'm going for the X4.

I got the email from Insta letting me know I could place my order before there were any reviews so I had to roll the dice. Honestly the only thing I cared about was if they had done something to protect the lens and the swapable cover was good enough for me. I am glad to see it is a bigger unit. The fascination people have with making things really small is just weird. Love your content.
Been a fan of 360 for awhile. I am happy with insta360 continuous investment in developing 360. Some years it felt like gimmicks but to me this shows they are truly trying to push the envelope on what a 360 camera can do in a small form factor. Thank you for you dedication and reviews.
My X2 is still running good !!! Trust me .. it's the person behind the gadget not sometimes the gadget. Am more over, am not gonna punch in too deeply. Good review though.

Thank you for the great review. I am making virtual tours and updated from the X2 to the X4 today. I used HDR Photo mode with RAW on the X2 before, but on the new X4 I can't switch to RAW in the HDR mode. Do you know why? Do I have to choose between HDR or RAW photo on X4? That would be a big downgrade for me. Would be great if you could help me on that and would tell me which setting you would choose for virtual tour on X4... I have a client this Saturday and planned to use the X4 for the first time
Considering your findings regarding not seeing higher photo quality in the X4, would upgrading from an even older X2 (lower photo resolution) to an X4 be a significant improvement for photos?
14:14 single lens mode allows you to use the camera like a normal camera without every file being double the size. It means not having to carry two cameras for different purposes, great for travelling, where you want to keep amount of gear to a minimal, including number of SD cards. I wish they would upgrade the RS 1 inch to do it, as the big sensor would allow it for use as a single lens camera.
@@BenClaremontI'd agree with @bigboldbicycle in that this feature gives either kit-limited travellers or professional filmmakers like me who has just worked with lots of motorcycle mounted action cams to deploy the X4 as another action camera if the need arises ie one of them is defunct or another is required. It's all about having the option available, even it that is never or seldom used. It's like having the facility to top up other devices from the X4 battery. Not something I'd likely do, but the option is there, because it's a feature they can easily provide.
we used gopro maxes for the longest time, and I don't think we will be going back, now that this x4 has 8K. For our wildlife videos, this is finally the 8K camera we've been waiting for.
Love your honest reviews! I have the 360 one inch and was really debating saving for the x4 so it is refreshing to see a comparison I could trust. Do you have any plan to do a more thorough comparison with all the settings and lighting conditions in the future? I would love to see exactly how they match up quality wise.
I use the one inch for my real estate photography business, and just bought the X4 to use in my in-cockpit flying videos. Having added the accessories, I think the X4 will make an excellent travel camera for scuba as well. Two cameras, two different usage profiles.
I'm a bit oldschool(as in from the time when you bought a huge spherical attachment to attach to your SD resolution camera), the price is incredibly low for what you get in my opinion. This will probably be my first good 360 camera. About the low light comparison: on both my phone and laptop the x4 seemed to be a bit on the dark side. Then again, the other 2 had blown out white levels.
Been wanting to upgrade my original insta360, I think it’s time. My question is, sure this has 8k and better quality, but when you upload to Instagram, do you downgrade image to 1080p? I may just get the X3 for cheaper since I only upload mostly on Instagram. We’ll see. Last question, all the Shot Labs stuff are available for both X3 and X4 right?
Just purchased the X4 and enjoying it, does have a bit of a learning curve compared to my other cameras. I have 2 questions, what SD card do you recommend because with some of the settings it said my V30 card was not fast enough, and 2nd I bought this to do 360 tours with Zillow but they do not support this camera, strange though because they support the other insta cameras, do you have any insight on this? Thanks!
What really gets me from seeing all the side-by-side comparison videos (like the X4, X4, 1-Inch in this one) is how different the colors are from camera to camera. One of the UA-camrs (that I cannot re-find) uses a color calibration card to show how accurate color reproduction is. It seems like color accuracy would be something easy to measure with the right tools but Insta360 doesn’t give us that. I think color is why so many folks thought the X2 looked better in my side-by-side raw footage X2-X3 comparison clips, and similar things are showing up in comments about how some think certain X3 shots look better than X4.
*The* only Insta 360 X4 review worth watching. Seems Insta gave freebies to vloggers that have little experience or care any about 360 cams, unlike them Ben knows his stuff.
Hiya, please answer this... You mentioned how the X4 is good for semi-pro commercial photography. What about the X3? Would that be decent for taking pictures of the inside of properties? I've watched your X3 review before I bought it a while ago, but it's been a while so I forgot!

I bought a x2 around a month ago (for holidays in Asia) because It was on sale and I was expecting the x4 to be out this summer. I will probably buy the x4 next year unless I can find an x3 for a very good price (sale or 2nd hand). Thanks for taking time to make a good review instead of rushing it to be first.
X4 seems like a very good camera, and finally, the 360 camera has its 8K version. The 8k resolution can certainly provide a very good footage quality, which is one of the most important thing. And from the footage we can see, the low-light performance is quite impressive. Very good camera, I was convinced by this video!
Another great review. Would be really interesting if you would be able to create a follow up video showing the X4 v the One inch for virtual tour photography. If it’s on par with the one inch but cheaper, is it a better option?
Great review Ben! You’re the first guy to compare the X4 with the 1 inch 360 cam, I feel relieved that my 1 inch still holds with image quality and not rushing to sell it for a X4 upgrade(or down grade).
Hey Ben! Thx for the review. I actually want to upgrade my old Ricoh Theta V to something new, but only to shoot 360 panos, not video. Do you think the x4 is the best choice for 360 virtual tours at this moment? Or better go for the Ricoh Z1? Do you have to stitch the DNG images that come out of the X4?
Yours is the first review to show that “protective case”. It obviously doesn’t appear to protect much the way you attached it, but I wonder if it’s meant to go the other way, protecting the screen when doing higher speed/higher risk activities where dirt, rocks etc. may hit the screen…? Just a thought. Thanks for the review - wish I had the budget to upgrade from my OneX.
Couple of things nobody seems to be mentioning about this are the increased wifi and usb speeds and the extra battery capabilities of fast charge and pd from the x4, meaning you can charge things from the x4 and it charges nice and quickly just by plugging in a usb-c cable
Thank you for the honest and straight forward review. I was really hoping this camera would be an upgrade, but based on this information it's not in my opinion. 8k that is not really 8k and the increased size of the case is a big put off for me. This is just another way for the company to sell more accessories for each new model, since you can't use the previous gear that you spent a ton of money on. Plus you have to carry more gear now and that is a big pain for videographers...Thanks again for the great review.

I agree that for video this is the best 360-cam. I only prefer the one inch in low light. But during day light the x4 is def better.

Point taken. So in your opinion for low light shots... X4 or 1" RS?
Really the only reason I got the X4 is that there is no 30 min limit on recording. Now I can record my gigs without worrying about dropouts mid song.
What camera or brand has this 30 min limit?

If you don't already have the X3 just pay a bit more for the X4. The bigger battery alone is worth it. That's what I did.
great for daytime videos, still not good for night videos. If you want a balance of both, I use the One RS one inch edition.

Needed this vid. My Insta360 1-Inch just pooped the bed. I'm so tired of fiddling with it's microscopic screen, and now it's having SD card issues....I'm over it. I'm going for the X4.

Me too and 1080p is just fine for UA-cam and other video hosting sites but of course true 4K is noticeably better.

I got the email from Insta letting me know I could place my order before there were any reviews so I had to roll the dice. Honestly the only thing I cared about was if they had done something to protect the lens and the swapable cover was good enough for me. I am glad to see it is a bigger unit. The fascination people have with making things really small is just weird. Love your content.

Been a fan of 360 for awhile. I am happy with insta360 continuous investment in developing 360. Some years it felt like gimmicks but to me this shows they are truly trying to push the envelope on what a 360 camera can do in a small form factor. Thank you for you dedication and reviews.

Thank you for the great review. I am making virtual tours and updated from the X2 to the X4 today. I used HDR Photo mode with RAW on the X2 before, but on the new X4 I can't switch to RAW in the HDR mode. Do you know why? Do I have to choose between HDR or RAW photo on X4? That would be a big downgrade for me. Would be great if you could help me on that and would tell me which setting you would choose for virtual tour on X4... I have a client this Saturday and planned to use the X4 for the first time

Considering your findings regarding not seeing higher photo quality in the X4, would upgrading from an even older X2 (lower photo resolution) to an X4 be a significant improvement for photos?

14:14 single lens mode allows you to use the camera like a normal camera without every file being double the size. It means not having to carry two cameras for different purposes, great for travelling, where you want to keep amount of gear to a minimal, including number of SD cards. I wish they would upgrade the RS 1 inch to do it, as the big sensor would allow it for use as a single lens camera.
Sure but SD card space is always plentiful. Cards are cheap and go up to 1TB, which is enough to store a year’s worth of footage at least.
@@BenClaremontI'd agree with @bigboldbicycle in that this feature gives either kit-limited travellers or professional filmmakers like me who has just worked with lots of motorcycle mounted action cams to deploy the X4 as another action camera if the need arises ie one of them is defunct or another is required. It's all about having the option available, even it that is never or seldom used. It's like having the facility to top up other devices from the X4 battery. Not something I'd likely do, but the option is there, because it's a feature they can easily provide.
we used gopro maxes for the longest time, and I don't think we will be going back, now that this x4 has 8K. For our wildlife videos, this is finally the 8K camera we've been waiting for.

I use the one inch for my real estate photography business, and just bought the X4 to use in my in-cockpit flying videos. Having added the accessories, I think the X4 will make an excellent travel camera for scuba as well. Two cameras, two different usage profiles.
I'm a bit oldschool(as in from the time when you bought a huge spherical attachment to attach to your SD resolution camera), the price is incredibly low for what you get in my opinion.
This will probably be my first good 360 camera. About the low light comparison: on both my phone and laptop the x4 seemed to be a bit on the dark side. Then again, the other 2 had blown out white levels.

Been wanting to upgrade my original insta360, I think it’s time. My question is, sure this has 8k and better quality, but when you upload to Instagram, do you downgrade image to 1080p? I may just get the X3 for cheaper since I only upload mostly on Instagram. We’ll see. Last question, all the Shot Labs stuff are available for both X3 and X4 right?

Just purchased the X4 and enjoying it, does have a bit of a learning curve compared to my other cameras. I have 2 questions, what SD card do you recommend because with some of the settings it said my V30 card was not fast enough, and 2nd I bought this to do 360 tours with Zillow but they do not support this camera, strange though because they support the other insta cameras, do you have any insight on this? Thanks!

What really gets me from seeing all the side-by-side comparison videos (like the X4, X4, 1-Inch in this one) is how different the colors are from camera to camera. One of the UA-camrs (that I cannot re-find) uses a color calibration card to show how accurate color reproduction is. It seems like color accuracy would be something easy to measure with the right tools but Insta360 doesn’t give us that. I think color is why so many folks thought the X2 looked better in my side-by-side raw footage X2-X3 comparison clips, and similar things are showing up in comments about how some think certain X3 shots look better than X4.
*The* only Insta 360 X4 review worth watching. Seems Insta gave freebies to vloggers that have little experience or care any about 360 cams, unlike them Ben knows his stuff.

I bought a x2 around a month ago (for holidays in Asia) because It was on sale and I was expecting the x4 to be out this summer.
I will probably buy the x4 next year unless I can find an x3 for a very good price (sale or 2nd hand).

X4 seems like a very good camera, and finally, the 360 camera has its 8K version. The 8k resolution can certainly provide a very good footage quality, which is one of the most important thing. And from the footage we can see, the low-light performance is quite impressive. Very good camera, I was convinced by this video!

Do you think the x4 is the best choice for 360 virtual tours at this moment? Or better go for the Ricoh Z1? Do you have to stitch the DNG images that come out of the X4?

Yours is the first review to show that “protective case”. It obviously doesn’t appear to protect much the way you attached it, but I wonder if it’s meant to go the other way, protecting the screen when doing higher speed/higher risk activities where dirt, rocks etc. may hit the screen…? Just a thought. Thanks for the review - wish I had the budget to upgrade from my OneX.
Turns out it’s actually a thermo grip, for reducing heat while filming indoors 👍🏻

One big improvement is, that the X4 works much faster on switching on and starting recording.
Couple of things nobody seems to be mentioning about this are the increased wifi and usb speeds and the extra battery capabilities of fast charge and pd from the x4, meaning you can charge things from the x4 and it charges nice and quickly just by plugging in a usb-c cable

Thank you for the honest and straight forward review. I was really hoping this camera would be an upgrade, but based on this information it's not in my opinion. 8k that is not really 8k and the increased size of the case is a big put off for me. This is just another way for the company to sell more accessories for each new model, since you can't use the previous gear that you spent a ton of money on. Plus you have to carry more gear now and that is a big pain for videographers...Thanks again for the great review.
