  • Let's use up some scraps and make a few key fobs! I'm going to show you two different ways to make them, using two different pieces of hardware.
    The choice is up to you, but either one you choose, it's going to be fun!
    You'll need:
    * a 4" x 12" (or longer, it's up to you) piece of fabric
    OR
    You can also piece charm squares or scraps together to get the size
    of 4" x 12" (or longer, your preference).
    *Cotton Batting or fusible of your choice
    cut at just under 1" wide
    *Key Rings: bit.ly/3faTPJD
    OR
    *Key Fob Hardware Set with Pliers: amzn.to/3UBTn7D
    #16 sewing needle
    The Autumn charm packs I used came from Etsy seller MyFabricAddiction1 and can be found here: etsy.me/3BMrh0Z

    • @MariesScrappyCreations
      @MariesScrappyCreations  Рік тому

      Hi Daphne! At first I almost didn’t make a video about them, since I knew it wouldn’t be a long video. But then, I figured that a lot of people might find it useful. There are so many different ways to make key fobs, so I thought I would throw my hat in the ring and show everyone the two methods that I use. As far as tweezers go, I starting using them years ago because unless I get acrylic nails (which
      I do now), I don’t have any fingernails with which to grab the thread. I also struggle with severe dry skin, so that even if I am able to grab the thread, it catches on the dry skin of my fingertips and unthreads the machine. The tweezers are great because I can fit them in around the small spaces of the sewing machine and they work as my fingertips. I love them!

    Marie,
    First I LOVE this project! Second,I noticed you have the same issue I have with my sewing machine sitting in my sewing table with some gaps around the edges of the machine. I wanted to share a tip that helped me cover those gaps.
    Dollar tree has clear plastic chopping mats in a pack of 2 for $1.25. They measure 11x17 and are the thickness of template material. I laid the mat on my sewing machine and table and marked around the presser foot, and feed dogs then used a Xacto knife to cut out the hole to allow them to work properly. I taped the chopping mat to my sewing table/sewing machine with painter's tape, and it works great to keep my chain piecing from getting caught up in the crack between my machine and the table. Just thought I'd share this little trick in case you find that to be an issue for you too. Have a great week!

    • @MariesScrappyCreations
      @MariesScrappyCreations  Рік тому +1

      Hi Suzanne! Thank you, I'm glad that you like the project.
      I love your idea! I actually just bought some of that cutting board stuff the last time I was at Dollar Tree, because I needed it for templates. I think I'm going to have to see if there's such a thing as white or clear painter's tape so I can try to cover the edges. My sewing machine isn't level with the sewing table, there's a little bit of a gap, so it would go down from the sewing machine to the table at a slope. I still love this idea. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I'm going to see if I can make it work for me.

    • @suzpain
      @suzpain Рік тому

      @@MariesScrappyCreations I had the same problem with my machine sitting just slightly too low as well. So I added a little rubber non slip pad under the machine (this also reduced some vibration noise I was dealing with) that raised it just enough to be level with my table. It took some fiddling but now it sits just right. I also put a rectangle of Styrofoam that came in a package behind my machine to fill the gap there because my machine is much smaller than the table opening. The table was a gift from a friend so i made it work for me. Necessity is the mother of invention lol.

    • @MariesScrappyCreations
      @MariesScrappyCreations  Рік тому

      That's a great idea. But actually, my machine bed is a bit taller than the table so it would slant downward to the table. I have a fairly thin mat underneath my sewing machine, but that has to stay there. About a month or so ago, my cat got up on top of my sewing machine and when she jumped down, she pushed off with her legs and dumped my machine on the floor and it split into 4 pieces. I'm very lucky that it evwn works. But anyway, that's why I have that mat underneath it, so it can't slip as easily. Thank you so much!

    Oh how I could have used this a few years ago when I was making them for my quilt guild! This is an easier, and dare I say, less expensive way to make these than I did. I used a strap material that I sewed a braid on which certainly cost more than scraps and fabric. They were beautiful and very sturdy, but I do like these better. I also like the idea of using the key ring versus the key fob hardware. I will have to make myself one using your technique.

    Another channel tip for key fobs. Put E600 glue or hot glue inside the key fob hardware to secure the fabric inside the hardware (end where fabric goes in)before clamping it down. It’s extra security and that way u don’t have to hold on to the fabric when clamping it down!

    • @MariesScrappyCreations

      Hi Janice! Thank you! I actually just bought some Gorilla glue the other day. It said it could be used on metal, cloth, wood, etc. I don't remember exactly which formula it was, but I got it so that I could use it when I put Chicago screws into my wallets when I make them. I figure if it will hold that, it will definitely hold the tip of a key fob.

      Thanks so much! I'm happy that your liked not only the tutorial, but the way I presented it. I think you have a very thoughtful and sweet idea to give these as gifts to the nurses. I'm sure you'll make them very happy!

    I cannot decide which key fob I like the best. Maybe I would have to do one of each.

      Hi Janice! I like both ways, although I think the one with the key fob hardware is easier, at least in some ways. But they both have their advantages.

    Love your key fob very good instructions, thank you so much for showing us. What is the measurement of the batting, especially the width?
    Thanks again

    • @MariesScrappyCreations
      @MariesScrappyCreations  Рік тому

      Hi! The width was listed in the description box as "just under 1" wide" because we have to have a little wiggle room. I cut the length the same or close to the sane as the length of the strip of fabric.

    I love the key fob! Thank you for sharing. Where did you get the tool to clamp the 2nd one on? I need to make some of these. I need one for my house key!

      Hi Portia! You can find the link to the hardware listed below the video in the description box. I also pinned a comment, which is also underneath the video. Both places have the link to where I bought my tools. If you can’t find it, just let me know. Have fun and happy sewing!

      Hi Betty! Yes, I started out with three 5" squares, which I then cut down to a 4" wide strip. I cut the batting at just under 1" wide and just about the same length as my fabric.

    Great tutorial. Great idea. How much do you charge for these at the craft fairs? Much Love

    • @MariesScrappyCreations
      @MariesScrappyCreations  Рік тому +1

      Hi Cindy. Thanks! I charge $5 each for the key fobs. The only ones I made for the craft fair were the ones with the key fob hardware, not the ones with the round key ring.

    What width/length is your batting?

    • @AnitaSouthall
      @AnitaSouthall Рік тому +1

      Try one inch or just slightly under to fit into the crease. By length of your fabric and cut to fit if using method 2

      Good morning Patricia! I’m glad you like the idea and I’m happy that you like my instructions. I’m sorry about not mentioning the width of the batting. I guess your question was answered. I cut it just under 1” wide, just as Anita mentioned.

      Hi! The opening fits around your wrist (if you want to carry it) and on the end is a metal circle to clip your keys on to. It's just a very pretty way to carry your keys 🔑 💕
