  • Welcome to this week's tutorial! So many of you have requested this video, so I hope you enjoy this quick and easy project. The requirements for this project are usually readily available and it's a great project to cut out a whole bunch of and then sew them together "assembly line style".
    You'll need:
    Two 6" squares of fabric, one featured fabric and a secondary square
    One 6" square of shelf liner (links below)
    Duck brand shelf liner (light colored): bit.ly/3MS5WYW
    Dollar Tree Shelf Liner: bit.ly/3MS9la4

      You’re very welcome, Patti! You may find that your machine doesn’t need the walking foot, as each machine is different. The two machines I have, one doesn’t mind making them at all and the other one doesn’t like the shelf liner, no matter which way I turn it… facing up or down .

    I made these a couple of years ago for my quilt guild’s boutique shop we had set up at our quilt show. They were a huge hit as people were buying them for gifts and stocking stuffers. I prefer the square ones to the round ones. One person had the idea of using smaller squares, more like 5”, to keep in their purse for opening those sometimes hard to open water bottles. Another great tutorial, Marie!

    • @MariesScrappyCreations

      I bet they were popular, Nancy! I think they make a great gift and I think I’m going to put them with something else, like a set of potholders, a hanging towel and a bowl cozy. I suppose I could also do a placemat. The idea of the smaller one in the purse is a great idea!

      Hi Lesa! Yes, I was almost going to mention during the tutorial that it's basically the same thing as making a mugrug and putting the shelf liner on the back to make it so it doesn't move around. The same idea you have with your bedside organizers. Yes, the walking foot makes a big difference for most sewing machines. Mine will do it without it, but it's much easier with it.

    Such a cute little gift & seems very easy to make. I used some fabrics that I really didn’t care for and made a cat placemat with the same basic idea. Since it will be washed often, I used spray adhesive (light coating) and didn’t actually attach the shelf liner. It is just cut to the same size as the placemat and under it, much like rug tape. The other difference is that it is rectangular and larger instead of small and square for jars.

      Hi Diane! ! Thank you, I’m glad you liked it. That’s a great idea on the cat placemats. But yes I had thought about the washing and I wasn’t sure if the shelf liner would make it through the laundry, or not.

      You're very welcome, Jo! As I have been saying in the comment section a lot while replying, it really depends on the sewing machine. Some machines just go right along without any problems, while other ones won't sew over it, no matter what. That's where your idea of paper towel, or maybe some tear away stabilizer, or something like that comes in handy. My machine was OK as long as the shelf liner was facing down

    Thanks Marie. Great Lil square jar openers. Having RA, I use jar openers all the time- usually just pieces of shelf liner. I love the idea of adding fabric- sweet!

    good information on the differences between the two liners. I'm making these this year, and as you said, I too want them to last forever. My arthritic hands cannot grip to open jars, sometimes even already open pickle jars. Need this item in my kitchen. Thanks again for all the explanations. I like that the gripper stuff can be cut into equal squares.. no waste there.

    I just found your channel recently and I love it. The square jar openers are a wonderful idea and I think they would be good round also, but I'm not sure I can do the topstitching on the round ones as well. I'll give both a try. And thanks for showing so many crumb quilt ideas. I just started using crumbs and I want to do a presentation at my quilt group so I will be sure to tell them about your channel.

      Hello and welcome to my channel, I’m so happy that you found me! I’m glad you like the jar openers and I think other shapes would be great, too. But like you say, topstitching might be a bit trickier on the round ones, although I’m betting it can be done without too much fuss. Oh, you’re a fellow crumb lover, too?? I just love my crumbs and I love to use them in projects.

    Hi Marie - I think matching a square jar opener with a set of pot holders would make a nice gift. Or even with a hanging kitchen towel. I have wanted to try making some of these for quite awhile now. I think I am more afraid the liner is going to catch in my machine. I hadn't thought of giving the walking foot a try though. See you again soon, have a great week!

    • @MariesScrappyCreations
      @MariesScrappyCreations  Рік тому

      Hi Marie! Thank you so much! Yes, we could pair them up with pot holders, hanging towels, bowl cosies, placemats or any other number of things for gifts. I'm not sure if you've tried making these yet, or not, but, you may find that your machine is like mine and it just basically glides right along. I have to use my walking foot, but as long as I have the shelf liner facing down to the bed of my machine, it goes right through. If I do it with the shelf liner up, it's a bit wonky.

    Just saw this. While watching it I was thinking I might try it with adding a loop to hang it or a mini magnet so it can hang on the refrigerator. Thanks for a great video.

    I think, for the cost of a square of shelf liner and 2 squares of fabric, this has to be one of the quickest and easiest projects to make money at a craft fair. Thank you for the tutorial. There are others out there, but I saw yours first and it’s great! Also thanks for the comparison of the two types of liner material.

    • @MariesScrappyCreations
      @MariesScrappyCreations  9 місяців тому

      You’re very welcome! I had seen and read tutorials, and all of them were using the dollar store jar grippers, and I knew there must be a difference, and I wanted to do an honest comparison. I figured the only way to do that was to use them both types and let you guys know what my opinion was. Of course, I then leave it open for whatever anyone wanted to use for their own jar openers. I agree, you can’t get much cheaper on something to make and sell and these things sell like hotcakes, it’s unbelievable. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Happy sewing!

    Just like anything a bit awkward like slippery fabrics you could use a piece of interfacing on the shelf liner side and cut it away afterwards. Or paper. And it might dull a needle so change it afterwards too. Definitely like small SQUARE projects.

    • @MariesScrappyCreations
      @MariesScrappyCreations  Рік тому

      Yes Anita, those are great ideas!! My old machine doesn't like these, whether it's shelf liner side up or down, but the machine I used for the tutorial basically goes right through it without me having to do anything extra.. There are so many differences between sewing machines.

    Awesome tutorial. I have made these square jar openers and had a bit of trouble getting the top stitching to look good. I never even thought to use my walking foot, so that’s a tip I will try. My walking foot came with my machine and as I’m not a quilter I thought I didn’t need it so always forget it’s even there. Will try and use it more especially if I am having problems with neat top stitching. I have watch lots of your videos and have only just thought to actually subscribe. Hope to learn lots more from you and your fab tutorials.
    Much love and Huggles from Wales, Uk xx

      Hello and thank you so much for a wonderful comment! See? I didn’t even know you were out there watching me until now and here you are, ha ha. Yes, the top stitching can get a wee bit tricky, depending on the sewing machine. The one that I use most often doesn’t have a any problem if I put the shelf liner down towards the bed of my sewing machine, but if it’s up… nope, won’t do it. My other sewing machine won’t work either way and it gets caught up and I have to use paper or something that I can tear away underneath it. Thank you so much for subscribing and I look forward to seeing you more in the future in the comment section and hopefully on a live stream. Take care and happy sewing!
