Love watching you unload equipment.
Kind of bitter sweet knowing it came from (presumably) another working machine shop closing its doors. Good on Steve and Al for saving another one.
Whenever you have a component that can move in more than one axis there will always be some small amount of Kant because there has to be some clearance for it to be able to move. This is why heavy duty grinders and jig bores are built this way. By having the table move in only one axis it can be adjusted so it only moves in a straight line. Then the column can be adjusted to only move in a straight line perpindicular to the table axis. This makes the machine as accurate as possible. So glad I have an overhead crane for handling equipment. best thing ever!
Everybody wants an"AL to go to these auction and find high quality equipment for them. Al comes through again with another great piece of equipment. Very good job unloading.
Quality always comes through. Humans love to use such machines and I swear get better results from them, than using an inferior machine. The artistic side does matter to our brain and senses, just as driving a beautiful car is a joy. Best wishes from the UK
I really think that Steve does not understands how much I, and many others enjoy his videos. I know his life involves many things. I think Steve just knows stuff. But I do look forward to each episode. I miss the squirrels. But as a falconer I understand that things happen. It is our world.
Love Brown and Sharp machines and tools, high-quality stuff
Steve, Now we are having fun! Inspection and evaluation time. Satisfaction.
Stay safe and we'll see you next week.
Al doing that jungle boogie during.a short break.
Any time you are not here with a new post on Saturday we/I know you have been craze busy so I just come back and get a new Steve Summers fix of the last one to keep me topped up. The passion you have for a new fine thou capable grinder was always one of my favorite tools when I was in school. There was always the that fine, mirror like finish to sooth a fellas soul when the piece was finished. Sure nothing wrong with a feel good eh. The casting weights of many of our tools like this NEED to be as heavy as possible to keep them stable to achieve that 1/10 tenth accuracy we always search for. Take care my friend and I/we all hope to see you soon.
Great looking machine. Great job of getting it off your trailer safe and sound with a little help from AL. What a friend to have. Thanks as always for sharing. See you next Saturday.
That's a beauty, worth the shop space for sure. Just need a project to run on it and Al is an absolute legend
In order to win when you die, you gotta have at least one large Brown & Sharpe equipment (rulers or squares dont count!).
My two friends and I have moved a bunch of machines. We call ourselves the "Three Knuckle Head Riggers" Our motto is "Three knuckle heads, because two knuckle heads are never enough" 😊
You need to get shirts made up, they seem to make the day go smoother, like you know what you’re doing! Lol Be careful, that’s some heavy stuff and when things go bad, they go bad fast.
@@Hoaxer51 lol, we looked into t-shirts. Don't you know it. You really have to use your head and not rush. Fortunately we are all retired, have plenty of time and don't have that young buck strength anymore. We use leverage, pipes, straps, come alongs and chains. It might take us awhile but we haven't lost one yet!
Good job on the unload, Steve, that could have gone very wrong very fast. Can you imagine how much that would cost if still available new? It's good to surround yourself with high quality machinery. All the best, Mart, another UK viewer chiming in "early".
Congrats….looking forward to great news on the unit’s condition…koko
Always glad to get an Al sighting. Looks like a real nice piece of machinery.
Wow, that’s quality. Love to see this at workj.
Anybody else stumble on the first countdown? Then countdown aloud to nobody while Steve restarts the count. Thanks Steve, I’d follow you to the nearest 7-11 if it meant I could spend some time in your shop and watch some of the goings on. I mean if Farmcraft or Andrew Camarata didn’t have a new video out. Just kidding. Love your videos and your easy going nature.
New equipment for shop is always exciting.
Great way to get Al dancing on the camera haha
I was thinking Steve was teaching Al how to be a dance instructor! Lol
Very nice machine! I hope it brings you years of precision work. Cora has sure become quite the shop dog. Have a great week.
Awesome new machine 👌 😎 😀
I put extremely little effort into watching the episode and still enjoyed it.
Brown & Sharpe machine tools were high quality for sure. I really preferred the Parker Majestic Surface Grinder built prior to 1975
Awesome looking machine..
Thats a great machine...
It's an upgrade...
Good video
☹🇬🇧
Great addition to the shop! 👍🏻
I have one just like that still not up and running but inspection says it will be very good . Good luck with yours I'll be watching
Nice additoon to your shop Steve. I can't tell you how many times I drove by Brown and Sharp in my younger days....
He who has the most toys / tools wins. Grats.
One way of modest cost to move big stuff is to rent a big forklift for a day. We have a 5000 lb forklift but have to rent an 8-10,000 lb one on occasion to handle big machines. The cost of the forklift ($400-500) will be vastly less than cost of any repair to a machine and much safer too. Preventing personal injury to employees is of course most important.
The idea of having external hydraulic pump is to reduce the vibrations. Having it build inside it must have very good ativibration system.
We had that same exact machine in our shop and it is an extremely accurate machine you will be extremely pleased and maybe even amazed on the ease-of-use, and the accuracy of this machine what a great score! And Kudos to Al..... what a great pal you have in Al... he has been a godsend in helping you and your shop and related needs... Way to go Al. On another note another Channel that I watch is Winky's Workshop and he just bought a 1950 Wells 628 vertical Mill,, he just got it in his shop and was tearing it apart to rebuild in one of the scenes I noticed a tag on the side of the machine, now after the war my father was a machine salesman and worked for a company in St Louis for close to 45 years and on the side of this machine was the tag of the machine company that originally sold this machine when it was brand new.. it was the tag of the machine company that my father work for in St Louis where I was born and raised .. Hoffman Marquard machine sales... and my father most likely sold that machine when it was new he was their top salesman.. I saw that tag and it took my breath away my father who passed away in 11 bought and sold machines all of his life after the war we were always rebuilding some kind of used machine in our basement at the house so this is why I live vicariously through all you guys on UA-cam I saw that tag and it made me think that my father was letting me know that he approves of me watching you guys rebuild your machines or fabricate something or rebuild your shop cuz I have been there and done that with my father ...looking forward to you getting this machine up and running thanks for sharing❤😮😢
The problem with internal oil reservoirs is that coolant always finds a way to get in the oil tank and contaminate the oil. When I worked Grinders for Industry we always converted the machines we rebuilt to external sump.
We usually get the rundown of the machine while you’re cleaning the whole thing off with cleaner and rags which I think is a great idea, but this one is pretty clean already. Looks like someone has been taking good care of their equipment.
Just imagine how much a machine built to the same high quality would cost new at today's prices
Good for you! I've never seen a Brown & Sharp anything that I didn't love. There ergonomics of design and quality is unmatched by anyone. I'm happy for you and know you're going to enjoy the ownership of that grinder.
Steve, I love your unloading video!
Very helpful for me.
I had suggested once to Kieth Rucker to do a video or more on his unloading of shop equipment, but I believe he was not interested in doing one.
Many thanks.
Keith seems to attract UA-cam experts that run down any method he uses.
Similar to any UA-cam video showing a tree being cut down.
40% are "experts" telling everything wrong with the vloggers methods, and 40% are tree huggers moaning about cutting down healthy trees. Even when you can see the rotted hollow tree trunk.
make sure you check that the pump motor is wired for 220 and not 440
It is wired for 220 volt. That is how they used it at the place it came from.
@@SteveSummers I bought one of these grinders a few years ago and the grinder motor was wired for 220 but they forgot to change the pump motor and I had to replace it because it was burned up
Nice B&S surface grinder Steve. Al sure finds some great tools.
Nice machine 👍
Awesome Steve. I am in the process of restoration on a 1236 Micromaster. Have learned quite a bit tracing through the hydraulics on that machine. Congrats to you!
Thanks!
sweet
Nice find! I picked up a Brown and Sharpe No. 2 for almost no money a few years ago. All mechanical, no hydraulics. Flat belt driven, gear operated. Just a joy to watch it work, almost like a shaper. Ended up selling it because I needed the floor space more than I needed a grinder.
Cora, I've heard from the veterinarian that "Antlers" are harder than dogs teeth... Which can crack a tooth / present problems
B&S grinders are a superb bit of kit Steve. 👏
Happy Saturday Mornin Steve, Al, Cora and Grits! Congratulations on the super score! Looks like like a winner surface grinder. Good things happen to good people. Thanks for sharing, good luck, God Bless!
Shop dog does excellent work. you have trained her well. 😁
Busy ? You haven't seen a one-armed wallpaper hanger !!!
Wood is cheap, light, and flexible. Coincidentally to me removing a cement wash basin from a basement, I watched Tom Lipton’s video on moving shop machinery. Prep is everything and the right simple piece of wood will save your life.
Why not make an extra long skid and just place the equipment on the front half? When you unload towards the ramps, it can’t tip over because of the counter leverage from the excess skid platform.
Also, one can make a skid with hydraulic casters/rollers. During transport, the rollers are retracted. Once you get home, just pump them by hand to lift and roll.
Edit: Instead of true hydraulic, fashion steel mounts that work like tensioning rams on tracked, heavy equipment. They get pumped with grease to lift /spread.
That's a cracking looking machine you have there Steve, and judging by the patina and paint condition, it should be genuinely low wear too. I look forward to your full appraisal of it. I'm pretty certain we had the same model in the toolroom I worked in some time back. Lovely to run.
I just can't get the image of a one legged cat burying its bussiness on a frozen lake for some reason. My brother has a three legged cat (front right missing), and he catches wood pigeons, but is still funny to watch him carry them.
Great score Steve, I guessed surface grinder as it’s the only thing I thought might be that shape. I also have a Brown & Sharpe surface grinder but it’s just a No.2. It used to be a 2B but someone removed all the automatic features so now it’s just a 2. Works well and no auto feeds isn’t really a problem as it doesn’t get used all the time. It was made in 1943 and still has no play in the spindle so it does me.
Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
I too have a 6x18 micromaster. Been doing a tear down and rebuild. Definitely check both filters. Mine were a cotton yarn wound cartridge. They were falling apart most likely getting debris in the lube lines. If you need manuals let me know.
Picked it. Nice addition Steve. Looking forward to some content with this unit.
You know, I good little project to machine up would be some heavy equipment casters and a set of toe jack hydraulic jack attachments for when moving heavy machines like this. Those low profile, heavy casters I've seen machinery movers use, seem heavy duty but not very complex or complicated and the toe jacks they use, seem like they could be built using harbor freight bottle jacks and a machined adapter for the toe.part.
My guess was a kent surface grinder. Very nice, back when companys tried to out build their competition. Now its who can make the biggest peice of 💩 and make the most $
Comment for the algorithm!
Morning all from Dorset, UK 😀
Good morning from Lincolnshire
gidday from New Zealand.
Evening from Victoria Aust.
Thanks Steve, I'm happy for you.
Busier than a one armed wall paper hanger
Please show what you have cast into the floor for anchors
I knew it was a grinder!
Good quality machine indeed.
Surface grinders as such are quite unbalanced as being top heavy. I admit that I was quite on edge as you had it going down the ramps. But you had it well secured from the rear and all went well.
I hope it will work up to your expectations Steeve.
So I guess we will enjoy a cleaning video in the coming week...!
God Bless.
Good looking machine congratulations
So I was... looks like a grinder though it could possibly be a horizontal mill. Looks like a grinder.
I love the Shop, I don have the skillset you have but I must say I love the work and attention to detail you put into your work... Your Family must be proud of the work you do..... Great video
When I used to teach at my local community College we has one of the B&S grinders. It looked like it had survived a nuclear explosion so no one wanted to use it but it was by far the best machine in the shop. Good luck with yours.
B&Sccontrolled much of the steel they used. If they built and scraped it, you have a dependable machine.
Thank you for sharing. Looks like a very nice machine.👍
Awesome as Always....Wow that's so cool Congrats
Aha - I guessed correctly!
Good morning Steve from the UK
Glad to see another machine shop project in the shop.
You need to build a large gantry crane just inside the door way
Hello Steve. Oh I do love a Saturday morning coffee and your weekly posts. I always loved my time at the grinders. Making precision out of cayos. Putting the anchor's in the floor was a great Idea. I know of only one other in my part of the world and that one would be mine eh, LOL. Well my friend. This was short and sweet but a fun visit. It will be great to see when you switch this beauty on for the first time. Take care and thanks a bunch my friend.
Great acquisition - and always good to see our hero Al on scene!
I have Reid 6X18 and it has a caliper on the Z axis where you can dial one tenth. you can easily put 5 lines between tenths because they are spaced like 1/4 apart. I thought this type of caliper is standard in manual grinding machines
When I bought my shaper the man loading on the auction asked way to much to load it to my trailer, I offered him a fair price but he didn't take it ,so I loaded it my self.. the problem for him was that he needed to get to the machines behind mine..after half an hour he offered to load it for free.. but I didnt take the offer😂
those units are hard to hoist without the right rigging chains.
Another great machine buddy!
Nice unit. Have had to pass on too many pieces of equipment in auctions due to lack of space. I think the B&S has found a new home. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing.
One armed man in a paper hanging contest .... me literally
I enjoy your detailed comparison. I am hoping to pick up a grinder if I can find one within my hobby budget so I look forward to following your evaluation process.
I got a brown and sharpe no 2 grinder. Got it for a song and love it! It still has the factory scraping on the ways!!! They say the micromaster is the superior machine by a good amount. After seeing yours I see what they mean. The Z axis column motion the hydraulically driven bed... (Mines all mechanical) nice machine good score congratulations! I look forward to seeing it in action!!!
Nice looking machine Steve, but it did look a bit sketchy coming off the trailer and onto the ramps. The hold back strap just looked looser than I would like, and if the grinder had started to tip forward, it appeared to me that it would have been well on the way before the restraining strap would have caught it. Perhaps it was just the camera angle, but it was scary to watch. My other suggestion would to put all pets (and or children) right out of harms way before commencing operations because they have no appreciation of the dangers involved, and they can move very quickly when you have your attention on the job in hand.
You have a great looking shop and a very interesting channel, thank you for all your hard work in producing your videos. It is great to hear that your mother is coming along well, my best wishes to you and all your family.🇦🇺
have fun
Steve I forgot to ask, How is your mother doing? Hope she is improving.
She is doing really well. Thanks for asking 🙂
Very nice machine!
You might want to take the opportunity to replace (or at least reseal) the lower sightglass on the tank, it's clearly leaking.
Having done my fair share of moving machinery, I will add in the one thing you really want, along with the floor anchors, is a strong set of eye bolts in the roof space, to allow you to lift things off the trailer or back of truck, or put them into said vehicle. I placed a steel plate on a concrete beam, using some M12 Rawl bolts, so I had a plate end with a hole, enough to put the rod of a D shackle through, that allowed the chain block to hang. Another machine had, on the concrete roof, a 2 ton rated M12 eye socket, that went to the M12 Rawl bolts that were both tight in the concrete, and also held in with construction epoxy as well. tightened to the max, and there to allow the chain block to lift the half ton of each end easily. Reinforced concrete roofs there, capable of handling regular commercial loading, so little worry, other than the bolt pulling out complete, thus the epoxy to ensure it would never come loose. Beam much less worry, shear loading, which that size bolt was easily well capable of, and the weak point was the steel plate itself.
look back on Steve's shop rebuild , the roof has timber trusses they will not support ant sort of concentrated load , show yes hoist no way
Time to pour a big driveway/garage apron and get a gantry crane.....
I'm in MN! Al, you out there?
Nice score!
Nice grinder. First thing tomorrow, I'm gonna go kiss all 5 of my forklifts.
What type of anchors do you use in you shop floor? Can you do a short clip about them?
i got the same unit. I have been trying to sell. but seems no body in wisconsin want one lol
I never learned to count backerds Steve put the cover back on
First! Good morning from the u k Steve! I'll watch the video now ! What a nice looking machine! It looks nice and clean, but that's no recommendation of course it could have been black as Newgate's knocker as we say here in England ( the infamous Newgate Prison in London) and worn out to hell and beyond and it's just been super cleaned up but I don't think so. A machine that's worn out usually has worn out paintwork to match and no amount of cleaning is going to hide that. So I'm willing to bet the accuracy is commensurate with the quality of the paintwork and it does not appear to be have been repainted from the look of it. So let's hope it works as well as it looks Steve and you have a wonderful new machine for you shop. And if it is and you sell the other grinder, even though it looks rough, your videos show what quality of surface finish can be produced on that machine. There's plenty out there that will want to buy it Steve. Cheers from the UK
Hi Steve. Really enjoyed this one. I think you were in rare form, right from "the great reveal"! Nice addition. B&S made solid equipment, built to last. I wonder if the stationary table design of the B&S grinder was so that the frontward foot print would not change. In a production shop where there are machines in a row, you would want to keep the aisle in front consistant to allow forklifts, etc. to move through without worry of hitting something. Just a thought. Love watching Cora do dog stuff too! Thanks for the video!
