  • Repairing a 1985 Worlds of Wonder Teddy Ruxpin. The cassette player was faulty and would not play at all unless the cassette door was half open. The video shows how to fix this by replacing the dented pinch roller.

For anyone nervous about taking their Ruxpin apart, why not buy a cheap one of the same type (metal or plastic tape deck) off ebay and have a go at restoring it first. Even if its not working, you have something to practice on to get the experience, and it gets you some spare parts. One of mine was only 10 dollars plus postage.

I still have mine from 1985 that my parents looked all over for that Christmas to get me, mine's still in the box because after the trouble my folks had they didn't want me to destroy it. As a result today I still have him in his box, the box is a bit dirty and worn but he's still in there and in great shape. I never knew they made them that didn't take full sized cassettes, maybe it's the recent one that take the smaller ones? After seeing this video it does make me want to get him out and fix him up. Thank you for a great series of videos on this Teddy deserves to be in proper working order for others to enjoy him still.

Hey! What a great video :) I got my hands on 3 teddies, 1 bobhead teddy, two baby teddies, and two grubbies. I will be starting my first refurbish attempt! (Mostly to keep in my collection, extra teddies and grubby are there if I need parts, but hope to get them all back operational)!
Just sending a message to see if your UA-cam channel is still active and if it would be okay to ask some questions if necessary using your videos as guidance!
Thanks you so much for your content! Teddy and Grubby will be forever grateful :-)

I am no electronics expert so I have a queston. Soldered to each motor for Teddy's eyes....upper and lower mouth there are 2 copper colored things that are shaped like resistors. Usually resistors have different colored bands for identification....these don't. They are copper colored and black on the ends of the smooth copper looking section.
What are these called? What is their purpose?
Where can I find this part to purchase? I have one that is bad which keeps Teddy's lower jaw from working. I can remove it and the jaw works. But, it must be there for a purpose and I don't want to cause any damage.
    Please give me advise.
    Zane.

Thank you for your videos. Could you let me know what the problem is with the tapes getting 'eaten' especially in the Teddy Ruxpins that have the 'metal' cassette player? Even with new rollers installed, the tapes get 'caught' and won't advance and then the tapes get all tangled in the roller. Very frustrating. Thank you for any suggestions in advance!

Take a look at my Teddy Ruxpin Refurb part 3 for this. It may not always be the case, but sometimes the take up reel isn't always always keeping the tape taut, and slack tape can get pulled out and chewed. This could be due to a number of different mechanical issues, but likely that an old Ruxpin will have slack belts

I have a very weird problem with my Teddy.
The cassette door shuts all the way without any tapes inside of it, but when I put any tape inside of the cassette player it doesn't shut completely, like it should. The problem with that is the door rattles very badly whenever Teddy starts playing the tape. It also makes the belt loosen a bit and make the cassette warble. Any idea how to fix it? It bothers me a lot :(

No, it’s Dirty metal contacts that are in the back of the deck, located to the left of the drive pulley that drives that cassette deck. They usually oxidize or get corroded after a while. But they’re what sense if the tape deck is still running or not. The way it works is, as the take-up reel or spindle turns.. those metal contacts constantly push together to send an electrical pulse to the deck to tell it it’s running. When it stops, they stop pushing together and the auto-stop kicks off. But if those contacts are dirty, it doesn’t sense that’s running. Cleaning them will get it working again. That and replacing the drive belt. Hope this helps.

Yes! But you should also replace the two drive belts that run the deck to ensure it has enough tension between the cassette deck’s drive motor and the capstan pulley, to keep running in the future.

I’m in the midst of repairing a gen 1 teddy of mine using a gen 2 for donor parts. The gen 1 teddy had absolutely no power going to him whatsoever, but now that I’ve replaced his battery terminals, he has power going to him. But he really needs a new drive belt.
Your teddy needs new battery terminals from the sound of it. I’d either look for spares on eBay, or get a donor bear. You’re going to have to open teddy up, and remove the foam torso and legs to get to the front portion where his wires are connected to the terminals. Take a picture of how these wires are positioned, so you can solder them back onto your new terminals. Disconnect these wires by heating up the solder with a soldering iron, and CAREFULLY detach them. The wires and metal will be hot. Take a pair of needle nose pliers, and untwist the prongs holding the terminals in place, and push them through the bottom, carefully without snapping or breaking the plastic. Insert the new terminals and twist the prongs so that they are held into place and reconnect the wires to the new terminals. Repeat this process for any corroded terminals. Hope this helps 👌

    • @workshop-pw9qz
      @workshop-pw9qz  6 років тому +1

Its something I just wired up myself. Teddy is nominally 6 volts. However, power supplies differ. Some can deliver more voltage than indicated when there is little current being drawn. This can be dangerous for Teddy. The first Ruxpin I received I accidentally provided to much voltage for a second and blew 3 of the chips on the main board. To see if a power supply might be suitable, it probably needs to be able to provide 0.8 amps (800ma) or more. If you test it with a volt meter when there is no load on the supply (nothing else connected) make sure the voltage measured with a volt meter is under 6.4v. Fresh new batteries often read at around 1.6v until they have been used for a short time. I have sometimes put a power diode in line with the crocodile clip cables as this will drop the voltage delivered by between 0.3v and 0.6v

I only know about replacing the pinch roller and cassette drive belts (videos 1 and 3). There is something simpler you could try first. If your pinch roller or tape heads look like they need cleaning, then this can usually be done with a cotton wool swab and some head cleaning solution. There should be plenty of examples for cleaning regular tape decks on you tube. May not help, but at least you can try without opening him up, and it will probably do him good.

BTW, I don't repair these for a living or anything. Never saw one until October 2015. Had to learn as I tried to fix one up as a Christmas present. I'm no expert but I make the videos so that I can pass on what I've learned (or at least think I've learned). Hopefully, as a result, some Ruxpins out there might get a new lease of life.
