  • Thanks PCBWay.com - Did you know that Teddy Ruxpin is controlled by nightmare sounds hidden on a cassette tape? Did you know that this is very exploitable?
Let's mistreat an original 1985 Teddy Ruxpin, in the name of science!

The signal Teddy uses is actually exactly the same as in older model remote controls with 8 channels. The control track on the tape actually controls Teddy as well as Grubby; Grubby was an accessory toy you could plug into Teddy with the same movements and a speaker. The second deeper voice on the Tape is Grubby.
The tape and tape player are now obviously degraded and that's why the movements bleed over and the sound is really garbled.
The Channels are used as follows:
    1 - sync/unused
    2 - Teddy eyes open/close
    3 - Teddy Jaw control 1
4 - Teddy Jaw control 2 (later revisions omitted this servo but the control track was still there)
5 - Speaker switch (controls if sounds play through Teddy, Grubby or both)
    6 - Grubby eyes open/close
    7 - Grubby Jaw control 1
8 - Grubby Jaw Control 2 (same as with later Teddy revisions)

I was given my older sister's Teddy as a hand-me down toy and she put way too much effort in using it to outright terrorize me after my parents foolishly let me watch one of the Childs Play movies they rented. Of course I've blocked all this out so I get to live vicariously through their telling of the story.

I had always wondered how this thing worked. I remember it was really expensive for a toy in 1985, I used to call it Teddy Seventy-Dollarpin because I thought that was outrageous for a toy in '85. But one of my cousins, who was born in '83, had one and played with it all during the rest of the 1980s. I did what a lot of other people did and stuck heavy metal tapes in him when I was over there. Teddy Ruxpin would move, but not in time with the music, and I had no idea why it was random. This makes sense; it would only move with a non-Teddy Ruxpin tape when the other stereo track made a noise that the motor recognized.
And now that I see that it needed an separate PCB with all of those parts, I understand why it cost the equivalent of $200 today. It wouldn't be anything to make one now, but in 1985 it was kind of a big deal.

As we know, PCB stands for Pretensibly Creepy Bear!
1985 brought us both cool and creep tech. :)
    Super Mario and Teddy Ruxpin!
I remember when Teddy Ruxpin came out. The stuff of nightmares!
I think the toy robot that spit out steam/smoke out its mouth or ears came out in 84 or 85 too. I think it was made by either Sears or Radio Shack. Admittedly, that robot was alot of fun.
I also had both Capsula and Construx. These building kits (however you call them) were fun. Putting together "vehicles" that propelled on their own very fascinating.
    Gotta love 80s toys!

Okay, now a real challenge: at one point, PBS, Microsoft and the creators of "Barney the Dinosaur" and "Arthur" created animatronic dolls of Barney, Arthur and DW. The dolls not only talked, but had head and arm movements. Creepy. They also had some built in 'games' but with a special attachment to your TV or VCR would animate the dolls in sync with actions on the video. This was done by decoding pulses embedded in the video and could be seen an the far left hand of the screen. It was real creepy.
Barney was the first model and the motors whizzed and whirred like a Terminator. "I love youu....."
They're probably difficult to find as the experiment didn't work well and didn't sell well. But messing with them... that would be a challenge!

The French tape was way better than the alternative inputs for syncing the mouth and eyes to the words. You have to figure out how to make that lower channel open the mouth and eyes and hand enter the sounds or wherever they are to match the French tape/
Also, I would like to see him taking a bluetooth input from a phone or tablet.
And, finally, take an AI control for conversation. I am guessing he does not come with a mic on his body, so that needs to be added and linked to the AI source.
Maybe you don't need bluetooth if you have a powerful enough INTERNAL computer like a Raspberry Pi 5 to decode the voice inputs and choose and output a voice response with mouth and eye movements. How about a better speaker in the same place and a tweeter in the mouth?
