Teddy Ruxpin Refurb Part 5B - The Real Reason For Stuck Servos

  • A continuation of Part 5, where I had previously looked at a likely cause for Teddy Ruxpin getting stuck servos and how to deal with it. You know, that problem where parts of Teddy's face stop animating. The evidence seemed to support my theory at the time, but I couldn't test for real as I had no genuine stuck servos to look at. In this video, I have that opportunity, and all was not as I had expected. Once again this is taking place with 1985 Worlds of Wonder Teddy Ruxpins.

    Thank you for your videos! You helped me fix my childhood Teddy Ruxpin (1st ed) which my mother inexplicably saved for 35 years! The spring that lowers the tape read he’d needed to be bent back into place and I had to loosen his servo motors as well. His bottom mouth motor was a bear (pun intended!). It turns out that somehow over time the friction was so great on the main servo driving shaft, it just wouldn’t budge. I ended up taking apart the white housing as well which has 8 plastic white gears in it, one of which had come dislodged while I was trying to manually loosen the mouth rotor. Because of the way it came apart, I had to reverse engineer how to reassemble them. Good thing I’m an engineer! ⚙️ 🐻
    In the end I got him working again! I also used your tape repair video. Again thank you so much, you helped me bring back and enjoy some precious childhood memories today. 😎👍

    You helped me so much if my teddy Ruxpin had stuck servos. I think I'm pretty positive that if he's not working right, I can 100% fix him now!!! Thank you so much!!!

      How the heck did you push that servo out? I can’t get any of mine out. I know if I can get the house and mouth ones out all I need to do is just turn them to get them unstuck, but I have to be able to get them out first!

    Your motor is simply experiencing dead spots. I come across this problem with older toys quite often.
    Just disassemble the motor itself, clean the stator and all contacts.:51

    I have fixed every teddy ruxpin with stuck servos I unscrew one at a time servo cover pull out the black round thing with 3 wires attached . i put a few drops of wd 40 into the servo then cleaned the black thing and the silver thing with alcohol put the black thing with wires and cap back in then worked the thing that should turn back and forth until it starts moving . I just fixed 5 teddy ruxpins in 2 days .I didn't go through any of the long drawn out ordeal you just went through I was fixing these for my mom she collects toys I am 12 years old. You went through a bunch of crap . The original grease dries up and that is why the servos stick.

    My teddy has had stuck servos since I had bought him. The seller said his tape played but there was no animation. I ended up taking him apart and tried to move the servos from the outside. That did not work. I went inside the servo to get access the little motor, and removed the very small gear next to the motor's gear. I spun the motor's gear by hand until it resisted my turn or just started to spin. I left it for about 15-20 seconds, so it could get up to full speed, and the servos work flawless now. His servos are very silent. Next is grubby, as soon as I can get the connector for him.

    Hello! I was wondering if you could help me in having problems with my Worlds of Wonder Mickey. I had the same problem with the tape playing slowly but when I opened him up I couldn't find the job you turned on Teddy. I was wondering if you could help me I'd really appreciate it.

    Ive had a problem with my teddy well its not too big but it used to happen so When I first turned him on he was working great but then the pitch went down and sometimes it would go back up and then down does this have to do with the motor driving the tape or is it the speed controller? Or is it just me. But other than that he works great he is a 2nd generation by the way.

    Thank you for the videos they have been very helpful. I have been trying to get my daughters teddy working and after watching you i'v replaced the drive belts and cassette roller and took the cover off the head to free up the stuck sevros. After getting the rubber wheels to turn i put them back in place and tried a tape. That is when i noticed that both sevros that work the jaws move some even when teddy is not speaking. Have you ever seen that before? When teddy is speaking it seems to be moving as it should with full range of motion but then keeps on moving with less motion until it's his time to speak again. I cleaned one of the sevros but did not make any change. If you have any idea what else to try i would like to try it. Thanks

      There is often a little bit of movement. Teddy and Grubby have additional animation movements, reactions to things, and also just to give a hint that they are 'alive'. It shouldn't be more occasional, not a regular continuous back and forth. A small variation in tape speed (even from an old cassette with some wear) that can also cause movement as this affects the control track pulse widths played back from the tape.

    Hello! This was a very nice video, and I've enjoyed your other ones so far as well. I have a question that's sort of related to this. How did you get the servo motors out and back into the grooves so easily? I've unstuck mine but now I cannot get them back into place on the face frame.

    • @workshop-pw9qz
      @workshop-pw9qz  8 років тому

      From memory, I think each one can only be pushed in and out from one side. I may have been lucky in the video or maybe I edited out earlier attempts that may have loosened things up.

    • @venilliopede
      @venilliopede 8 років тому

      +workshop1138 Yeah, I can see that. But for my teddy, theres a little built in bump in the center of the groove, which stops it from sliding in all tbe way and now I cannot get them in.

      I'm almost afraid to suggest this just in case the plastic has become brittle over the years. But a woodworking G clamp might be an ideal tool for this job (they seem be called C clamps too).
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-clamp
      You can tighten it slowly, and apply a lot more force to specific areas. Like the back of the grooved socket and the end of the pin, without having to put stress on the rest of the face frame. Maybe use some small pieces of wood to protect the ends of the plastic. Never tried it but should work. Good luck.

      +workshop1138 Hey! thank you for the suggestion, I only just saw it now. But yesterday I was able to successfully get them back in!

    It sounds like others have already told you what causes the motors to stick, so there's probably no need for me to say anything, but I've heard it said that the lubrication grease in the motors causes problems because over time it migrates to the commutator and prevents the motors from running. What I don't know however is how to lubricate the motors again and clean off any grease from the commutators and any other places where it shouldn't be.

    • @workshop-pw9qz
      @workshop-pw9qz  8 років тому

      I have bought new similar motors which have plenty of grease already on the commutator. I think that is part of the design. Mabuchi motors have patents on a mildly conductive spark quenching grease. It lists advantages such as reducing wear and prevent arcing from scorching the commutator. The grease doesn't stay clean forever though. Sooner or later it can break down and leaves a charred mess on the wipers. I have another post in this comments section with more on this.
