  • In this video I draw peoples attention to something that can happen to cassettes of this age, and how to fix it. I've had at least two tapes recently which have been missing the felt pad and another where the spring has come loose at one end and is rattling about. If you have a collection of Teddy Ruxpin tapes it is something worth checking for. If its the pad that's missing, then go for the first option of gluing in a replacement. You will see from the video that replacing the whole spring assembly is very fiddly and awkward.

    Holy sh*t thank you so very much.
    I’ve just repaired two tapes that I was just going to bin or sell back on eBay as unworking.
    They were slipping and also the sound was nearly missing completely, I’ve got another few to repair now but I had to drop you a line before I continue to say that it’s a perfect repair (even though I doubted it). 2 out of 2 repaired so far. Top Geezer!

      Oh, and double sided sellotape worked a charm, bit fiddly, but stick the pad to one side of the tape, cut the tape around the pad, peel off the other side and then drop into place. Sticks like shit to a blanket, with no drying time!

    Wow! This is cool! I am trying to get my hands on a Teddy so I can develop programming software for him! :)

    I recently got a Teddy Ruxpins Christmas tape and it plays but I tested with The Talking Mickey Mouse and there was no Animation, Mickey animates perfectly with his tape, I unstuck the servos, theres not even any sign of a motor noise. The tape has its felt pad.

      Late reply, but Teddy Ruxpin tapes do not operate with the Talking Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, or Mother Goose toys. The Teddy Ruxpin tapes are programmed with a different set of coding for their own tapes, while Mickey, Mother Goose, and Snoopy operate with their own sets of unique coding. However, oddly enough, Teddy will animate to their tapes as well, as apposed to the others. Now Grubby, Goofy, Hector, and what would’ve eventually been Charlie Brown on the other hand, all use the same programming as eachother. Grubby will animate to all the tapes, however, Goofy, and Hector will animate to Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, and Mother Goose tapes because they all share the same coding. Blueoctopede has good videos on her Teddy and Grubby preforming to different tapes (you can see how their face moves oddly because of the places of the servos), and a Goofy connected to a Snoopy, which is interestingly enough coded to Charlie Brown’s voice, which indeed confirms that Charlie Brown was so far into production, that they had already coded the tapes to his voice.
      So, TLDR, you probably took your Talking Mickey Mouse apart for little to no reason 😬 sorry..

    One of My Teddy Ruxpin tapes audio goes in and out at one point of the tape for both sides. But it plays well the rest of the way.

    Can you help me with one of the tapes I have? When I put it in Teddy it comes out heavily garbled but it's only with that tape and I think that there is some black stuff next to the pad and I'd like to know if it's possible to clean it

    • @workshop-pw9qz

      If the tape is garbled, check the pad cant wander too far from the centre position. If there is some corrosion on the metal parts, that probably isnt a disaster and some could be wiped away with a cotton wool swab. Safer to do if the tape has been wound to the end first so you dont get loose bits on the important part of the tape. But tapes of this age could have many other issues that prevent them running smoothly. Is it garbled like the sound is speeding up and slowing down, or that it sort of fades in and out?

    • @makkypak415
      @makkypak415 8 років тому +1

      +workshop1138 The sound speeds up and slows down heavily and it does that a lot, and the pad is fuzzy white but the metal part has some kind of black stuff on it

      Speed issues sound more like some physical problem with the cassette, preventing the reels spinning freely. Teddy tapes are glued/welded shut and that means they arent as easy to get in to without breaking something. Standard cassettes with screws are much easier. Not much guidance I can offer, other than if you have another tape recorder, run the tape through a few times to see if that frees anything up. Might give more of an indication if the reels are difficult to turn. There should be other videos on youtube which go into the ins and outs of tape repair/maintenance and even swapping the tape reels into another cassette housing if there is a problem with this one.

    Hey there.
    I always found it necessary to open the cassette shell whenever I replaced the pressure pad on that tape.

      What do you ususally do about any cassettes you have which squeal or slip while they play?

    • @workshop-pw9qz
      @workshop-pw9qz  7 років тому

      Not much I can suggest for that. I would probably take apart and put the spools in another shell (one with screws) to see if that fixed the problem.

  • @bgttgb100

    is there any way to open and reassemble the cassettes without screws or do i need to buy another one? because i bought one for a diy project, where i'm gonna turn it into a cool looking mp3 player and it will be REALLY hard to get the guts inside without opening it... :/

      I have no safe method for taking apart or re-assembling one of these tapes. It is quite hit and miss as to whether you could prize the shell apart without breaking something or distorting the plastic. The welds along the seams are a weak point, but not enough to guarantee success. Cyanoacrylate glue (super glue/Krazy glue) sounds OK for joining the halves back together, but use sparingly and if repairing a tape avoid the bottom corners in case the rollers stick.

      @bgttgb100 7 років тому

      i actually already managed to so! not even that hard, just took a knife and about two hours :D and i pretty much just "clicks" back together but i'm probably going to use some plastic weld or krazy glue to seal it back up ;P

    Can you play it in a normal cassette player?

    • @workshop-pw9qz
      @workshop-pw9qz  8 років тому

      The tapes will play in a normal cassette player. If its a old mono tape player, you will get a mix of the story soundtrack plus a loud buzzing which is the control information. If you play on a stereo cassette player which has a balance control, and you turn the balance all the way left, you will get just the story without the buzzing.
