Are Ultrawide Curved Monitors Worth It? My Experience So Far!

- Curved ultrawide gaming monitors have been pushed by monitor companies how market them as being better for gaming. But for part time gamer and full time creator who has never used a curved ultrawide gaming monitor for long periods of time, what's the experience like using the 34" AOC CU34G2X?

These monitors are amazing for productivity. There’s a Windows “snap” feature which allows you to half screen a window so I often have excel next to another spreadsheet etc.

Makes a video about a 21:9 monitor, doesn't upload it in 21:9. Sir I'm disappointed in you.
Exactly what I think but some youtubers are uploading in wider format due to mobile phones so not 21:9 but still nice to not have black bars at the top and bottom that's for sure
but it's aimed at people wondering about switching, meaning they don't have a 21:9...
Parker Givan but it would give people in idea what it would look like......
Im pretty sure it was a joke
@@faatbuddha Doesn't matter, those people could still see the video.
I'm legitimately impressed by how much this guy understands his own and other peoples' needs. :o
You're just the right amount of (non-)techy and taking many use cases into consideration.
Really helped me in my thoughts about buying 21:9 =)
I second that
"I don't like going fullscreen with my windows and I also don't multitask" of course you wouldn't like an ultrawide for your monitor then... Those are kinda the things they are good at 😛
I actually have 3 ultrawides now, after getting my first one, a 24 inch 2560x1080, like 3 years ago, I got lucky as hell and my dad actually found one of the og 3440x1440 lg monitors next to a dumpster, the power cord/brick were inside of it, when he was working on some of the dorms around my city's college. I have since replaced the second with a refurbished gsync panel with the same resolution.
I never actually "needed" the space for multitasking but when I am forced to do so, like writing papers for my classes, and doing research, its hard not to love the extra width. Using a normal monitor makes me feel restricted now in a weird way. Most of the hiccups I've faced have been in games, and when I can't fix fov myself, I just reduce the horizontal resolution and bear with the black bars.
On the topic of the loss of vertical real-estate, this is a good reason why consumers should be pushing for panel manufacturers to make ultrawides with the same vertical resolution of 4k.
You are transporting negativity I can feel it

I miss the days when we could go into a store and see several of these monitors set up so we can compare
Amazon killed it. People would go into a store, compare the monitors and order it from amazon
@@tubetubecommentor4795 i do the wait for bestbuy to liquidate the top5 list(custom subjective list). A 2021 165hz qhd LG went on sale -50$, and an openbox model at my local store was available for 335, so i went in and scoped it out... not even a spec on the panel or bezel. The same week they had the 2019 alienware 27" 240hz 1080p monitor on sale for 320$ brand new i was going to get that if the LG wasnt clean. I highly recommend this for buying a 2021 laptop or monitor if its accssible to see i person. When ever they drop them on sale, they also drop the open box items. VS most places just calling them refurbished at a set price or open box as a seprate price point that isnt affected by markdowns. But Bestbuy does stack the sale. The alienware 2 year old panel is back up to 459, and the lg 450.
Now you just have to go around and find someone who does own the monitor to go round to their house to see for yourself. A few extra steps, but it works....
49" AOC 32:9 monitor here and loving it. The best endorsement I can think of is that I do not notice the size nor the curve. It just feels natural and immersive.
@First Last IDK what you're on about. It's still a 1440p vertical display and a 21:9 would have the same vertical dimensions unless it's one of the 38" variants at 1600p. There are many factors to consider, including viewing distance.
@First Last 49" 32:9 has the exact same vertical height as 27" 16:9 monitors and 34" 21:9.
i could understand from a racing sim/flight sim, standpoint. PPL like to use numbers to manipulate the point theyre trying to make....its equal to 2x 27" monitors side by side...but with no bezel...whats there to complain about...as far as anyone willing to forego the purchase and own it. VS running 2x500$QHD monitors side by side with a gap/bezel. That is the literal design "concept". Its mostly intended for gaming, or using multi source+split screen etc. It has "more" specific use cases in that regard. Or monitoring multiple systems or betting/trading(stocks/coins). Most regular people arent going to consider 32:9, its for people that are interested in a different experience bc its literally 32:9, or that need multi source/split screen etc monitoring or watching like a 4 way split screen of sports/racing. then on the other spit screen a spreadsheet/monitoring program etc...if you were a streamer and you DGAF....you can play on one screen....hook up dedicated streaming rig to split screen and chat, with a second 64 key. Or play an MMO in windowed and watch a movie or etc on the other portions. Vs 16:9 4k and trying to do the same thing. Granted its price. Such users have that niche/perfect use case. Doesnt mean 32:9 was made for you
I feel like this video has time-traveled from 2017.

Yes, I thought I've seen it a few years back.
I've had a X34p for almost two years and for gaming it is just amazing! Red Dead Redemption 2 has just been a absolute joy play in Ultrawide. You can't help but sit look at the amazing scenery the the game designers have created. Forza horizon 4 is just ridiculous and so much more immersive, especially in when driving in the seat position camara. I could go on and on about great it is. Yes there are of course a few down sides but for me the these are easily out weighed by the pluses! Now if only that X35 200hz would half its price tag! 😍
This is a very well articulated and covers good ground with gaming and editing. Props mah dude
1:07 "Of course, that's an alphabet soup that I'll never remember"
Tim from Hardware Unboxed: Hold my beer.
The way he flawlessly says Viewsonic VX2758-2KP-MHD correctly every time
I mean this particular "alphabet soup" is strictly logical: C: curved, U: USB-hub, 34: 34 inch, G2: G-line 2nd gen, X: higher performance (iirc, there's non-X version with 100Hz refresh rate). It's pretty easy to remember.
I also agree with you about the vertical space. When I switched from a 27" it took me a long time to get used to missing vertical space even though it was only a bit smaller. I have been waiting for new monitors to come out that will allow me to get that vertical space back. I think there have been some announced but the prices on them were 2k and up. Just way too expensive.
I recently moved from an ultra wide 1440p to a 27in 4K after 3 years. The decrease in size took a long while to get used to, but the on and off lack of support for ultra wide really drove me to it. Specially in story heavy games with cutscenes. Being able to use the monitor for consoles was also a factor in my decision.
Loved the cut where you can see the size comparison. I mean one can calculate the difference of course, but then again, math and practically seeing are two different things! Great and professional content all the way through! Keep up the good work there guys! :)
Great in-depth review. Thanks for making this video
I was considering an ultrawide coming up from dual 27" 1440P IPS monitors. But after seeing your thoughts on the 'program monitor' for video editing as I do Adobe Premiere as well, I decided to stick with 16:9. But I think I would now upgrade to a 32" 4K instead. Thanks for the info!
I absolutely LOVE my 34" ultrawide! I was very sceptical when I bought it however i have consistently had better spatial awareness when using this monitor, also when doing productivity stuff I found the ultrawide a great help
Another good thing is it makes me move my eyes around, move my head around when looking at different windows or playing games very good to prevent the tunnel vision.
Is it a curved ultra wide?
Much respect for showing love for the MK1 Golf.

I have been using my 34" IPS LG for years. The only change I'll make when its replaced is maybe moving up to a 38 " ultra wide though it won't be for a while due to the situation with the bug going around right now . I believe the best monitor setup is a 21:9 with a 16:9 mounted right above (preferably equivalent resolutions and refresh rates).
That's how I've wall mounted my current 21:9's as I'll be getting an ultrawide later down the line. Feels better than expected, has a positive impact on my sitting posture and looks pretty dope between two wall mounted studio monitors.

i swear this channel is underrated this channel needs more attention
Surprised he didn't talk about how much easier it is to drive a 3440x1440 image on an ultrawide than a 4K image in games.
Depends on refresh rate. 4k 60Hz is the same as 3440x1440 100Hz. So driving this 3440x1440 at 144hz is 43% harder than 4k 60Hz.

In my experience with gaming anything other then a standard 16:9 isn't worth the headache of trying to get things to work right. It's completely hit or miss if you can get even AAA level games to function properly in non standard resolutions without jumping through endless hoops, and forget getting any indie game or older games to function properly on anything other then 16:9. A huge landscape monitor sounds great in theory but in practice I find it to just not be worth it.
Technical, good research, and to the point. Thank you.
That's the monitor that I'm waiting for ever to come back into stock!! Definitely seem to be making the right choice by waiting for it.
6:15 This reasoning is so annoying by the overwatch team. Fps, screen response, internet speed, etc. It goes on and on. People don't use ultrawide for competitive, it's for immersion lol
Literally the reason I stopped playing overwatch forever
@@xitwoundzzz Me too...I dont know what they are smoking over there in the overwatch team but their reasons for not supporting ultrawide are stupid af!
I know! By their logic over there at Overwatch, they should also ban anything over 60 fps, because 144hz, 240hz etc actually do provide a competitive advantage. More so than an ultrawide would.
"People don't use ultrawide for competitive"? You get so much more FOV in games where you'd have to suffer a terrible fish eye effect without an ultrawide. Plus, it's just as responsive as a 24 inch 1080p display if you have the money to spend. Ultrawide, unintentionally, is the reason I passed my skill ceiling on PC. Having that extra FOV without fish eye is just.. Man. Amazing.
@@Jack0834 The aspect ratio, FOV, response rate, game, and etc. will always vary per person in regards to performance so GG man! If it works for you then I can't deny it for your experience. As both a UW and 16:9 user, UW panel is not fast enough to handle my playstyle since it's an original x34 Predator/100hz only. If it was a G9 likely would be able to match my current 16:9. =)
Quick tip for more vertical space: move your taskbar to the side (left seems the obvious choice here).
Or use auto hide option. That way the taskbar is briefly displayed on top but hides soon after.
auto hide taskbar, now you have more room on all sides
you can also rotate your display 90 degrees for 3440 pixels of vertical space

Great review! I have been on the fence on ultrawide vs standard vs curved to upgrade my video editing setup. This was a great help as I also do not really game and I agree wit your point of view. Thanks from from a small youtuber!
Having a 21:9 is like crossing over to the 144z territory, once you experience it there's no going back. Been using Alienware AW3420DW for 6 months and love it. I too was skeptical about the curved thing but once you sit in front of it, you really forget about the curve
I don't agree. I've had an ultrawide for over two years now. For productivity tasks it's great. For just about everything else being gaming, watching videos, and web browsing I cannot recommend them. The cons have far outweighed. For gaming many games still don't support ultrawide or don't run well in that aspect ratio. All games except a rate few adjust the UI to have information centered in your view instead of putting it at the edges where your field of view is lowest. I've ended up playing games in a window more often than I'd like. Videos, outside Plex, have black bars. Browsers can't be full screen because so many sites don't have max widths so they end up with elements being comically large. Then those that do have max widths have tons of dead space. Then I end up with most of them being in a window that is around 16:9 anyways. It's really neat and immersive at the beginning, when it works well, but I'll be going back to standard aspect ratios when this one fails.
I can agree. I was using 4K for more space on the desktop, but since I switched to ultrawide (4k) I never looked back. It's amazing to have so much space. I don't mind black bars on games that don't support ultra wide.
I used a 34" and 35" ultrawide 120hz for a year and went back to a 4k 32" because it's superior.
"There's no going back" - yeah sure... also bold of you to comment that on a video where the guy went back to 16:9.
Just ordered the aw3420dw yesterday, I can’t wait to try it out!!
I find ultra wide to be perfect for my programming workflows. It allows me to have 2 tabs with code and a window with for example github on one screen. Never going back!
Ordered this AOC ultrawide to compare with my LG27GL850 for programming too. Basically same objectives, multiple tabs + a browser for testing and searching. My main worry is its vertical height, is the reduction in height noticeable in the amount of code cut from the view? Is the extra width worth it than the smaller height for programming?
@@dreistheman7797 no the height reduction isn't really something I noticed. Fits the same amount of text vertically as my Dell u2415
@@RoccoWocco That is great then! Do you use the AOC ultrawide? If yes, are texts clear and easy to read? Mine is coming in about a week and I'll compare it with my current 27".

That was very useful, thank you.
Excellent video. Keep it up!
I also can't deal with the curve. I need everything on my screen to look proper and color accurate for when I edit photos and stuff.
The curve doesn't affect any of that, only on specific models. You wouldn't want a curved TN screen for example due to the viewing angles, and as far as i know, they don't actually make them for that very reason. I personally have a color accurate curved monitor with 90% DCI-P3 and 130% sRGB. It's less than 1 deltaE from perfect, and that's without any color profile, simply adjusting the settings.
The thing about looking "proper" is that human eyes are spherical; Therefore curved actually looks more proper than non-curved. EVERY non-curved monitor will look concave after getting used to a curved monitor. I have a regular one right next to it, also color accurate. And it doesn't look as "natural" as the cuved one.
TLDR: The curve's practical purpose is to more closely match the "curve" in human depth of field. Only with ultrawides does the curve benefit in other ways, namely that it can wrap around your vision better. But a NON-ultrawide curved? It simply looks more natural than a non-curved one. There really is no disadvantage for photo editing. It's just a myth perpetuated by people who don't use curved monitors. :)
In the future most IPS panels will be curved, especially those meant for accuracy. I'd say GAMING is the thing that doesn't benefit much from a simple curve except again in ultrawides specifically; But i wouldn't get an ultrawide for photowork anyway unless i'd plan to divide the screen for multiple projects.
@@D4rkstorn not just bc aero/structural support...but thats also why most vehicular glass is curved as far as drivers/pilots same to glasses...Its like a light/shaft. If you want to see a room which is more effective way of utilizing 1 bulb of light. Emitted from a shaft or open /convex....or bulb. Then multiply that bc of the monitor backlight. Right down to optics and photography lenses.....gotta figure the image was captured on a curved lens but the "film" makes it look flat. IMO an example So through conventional ethics/methods we could conceptualize flat monitors the same way film is flat in both photography or cinema. Yet its capturing device has multiple elements of curvature in order to give the human eye a 'Better perception' of whats captured. Digital/special effects add a new element to the xyz aspects IMO...since that is a factor i can see how flat panels can have an advantage considering thats how content had always been edited/formed since digital age etc. When an ideal outcome is set a curved monitor could really harm that process. Like you said though with experience anyone can make good material. But 4k for example the vid did showcase an example where he could expand his work/content, while still having access to his timeline/flow. For HDR I'd just grab a TV. At least for movies. I personally don't need HDR for gaming, but it would still be nice
HDR certifications on most monitors is useless. Proper HDR doesn’t just need to hit pretty high levels of brightness, it needs to also hit some pretty gnarly contrast ratios. That’s impossible without OLED (not widely available), MINI LED (even less so, also crazy expensive), or an ips with local dimming (only a few, not enough dimming zones). I've been wanting to upgrade from my 1080p 27" Msi monitor to a 32" 1440p or possibly a 34". I mainly play fps shooters and do photo editing for fun. So high refresh rate is a must for me. With the current human malware still raging, pricing is hiked up on most monitors in the market making it difficult to make a decision on what to go with.
I have the same AOC monitor, it's amazing. I'm using it in the sRGB mode, the colors look sooo natural. On 144 Hz refresh rate with medium overdrive there's only negligable ghosting/inverse ghosting when dragging around a white window on the desktop, and tbh, in games I haven't noticed any ghosting yet.
I am sorry for your nfs addiction. treat yourself, install forza horizon or somehting similar.
ohh my lord I think i'm sick , I read title " My first Covid Gaming Monitor" hehe too much Covid.
What an ugly stand, why gaming monitors do not have rectangular heavy bases
I hadn’t thought about the lines when creating static content. The 34” Thunderbolt2 LG ultra-wide is barely curved so I haven’t experienced it. For me, 34” 21:9 is a sweet spot.
I literally just got this exact monitor for myself as a birthday present last week. It arrived last night and hooked it up immediately. I’m coming from a AOC C24G1 and my god the difference is almost overwhelming. I can’t wait to play it more and get used to the aspect ratio, just such a beautiful display.
Ye imagine playing gta sa super stretched...
song for denise starts playing
But it doesn't stretch...
Imagine how smoke would look
I don't think there is a fix for SA to run at 21:9 or 32:9, though you can stretch or crop anything you want via settings/drivers/OSD.
Actually just bought that with the steam sale and modded it like mad lol
I'll never understand why tech reviewers review content based on video production. Nobody cares. Nobody does professional video production. It's just you and a hand full of other dudes. For every one video producer there are millions who don't need that. Just review stuff in a way that it's relevant for the average consumer.
Where can I find the wallpaper on your AOC monitor?! Thank you.
This video really helped me out to consider whether I should switch my flat Dell U3219Q (excellent work monitor) for an ultrawide (also for work). I gotta say, I’d still rather stick with a flat 16:9 display. I totally here you about wanting to focus on one thing at a time, rather than having a lot of things going on in a wide field of view.
Nice I'm tempted to get one this Christmas. :)
Hey Eber. great review. got a question though. Have you tried working yourself with two screens before?
Very nice monitor! I might upgrade to this!
Thanks for being honest, Great review.. no one else is talking about problems with curved monitors.
Excellent review 👏 Very informative.
Truly understand your opinion.
Thats why some just have both monitors, heck some even more. Not all ultrawide (unless pure gaming) but a mix.
You can still use your current monitor for work and games that supports that size and aspect ratio perfectly...and when viewing content or gaming for 21:9 aspect ratio just use that ultrawide.
Some even use both the same time..while streaming or game streaming on the ultrawide, set the other monitor for reading comments or other stuff needed.
I get the same impressions using my 34" 1440p ultra wide too. It's a beast at multitasking and setting up zones with Powertoys or some other tile manager is a must. But for gaming, it is a mixed bag since some of the titles I like are either stretched or don't support 21:9 ratio. Watching widescreen video is a blast though.
Great content!
I use an ultrawide myself and I absolutely love it for gaming. Mine is not curved, so I dont have the issues on the editing side that you mentioned, but I have also never used a standard display for editing since I just recently started learning some basic stuff.
love the style and structure.
Good differentiation between different use cases and personal preferences.
Great Review, I recently got the curved AOC 24" 1080p, its a great buget gaming monitor. After using a curved monitor, flat monitors especially larger ones don't feel as comfortable on the eyes for me. thanks for the info!
