    In context of the albatross line. There's an idiom about having an albatross (a large marine bird) hanging around your neck. Meaning that you are carrying a heavy burden or curse that is preventing you from doing something. The origin is from an old poem titled The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge written in 1797. If anybody is curious there is more info here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rime_of_the_Ancient_Mariner

    Aes used to be in a group of Definitive Jux rappers called The Weathermen (i used to hang around with rappers at the root of the scene) before they disbanded after Camu Tao's death, and rumour has it that this is a subtle dig towards El-P who ran DefJux at the time, and had received a massive increase in popularity with Run The Jewels around the time of this being released. If you listen to RTJ it definitely borders the line between braggadocio and gross, too...

    Here's another song by Asaf Avidan, if interested. "Asaf Avidan - Earth Odessey (Official Video)" (by the channel: Asaf Avidan) --this song by Asaf Avidan is from his album called "Anagnorisis" released in 2020. The title of the song is a reference to Homer's epic Greek poem "The Odessey" through David Bowie's "Space Oddity" the song reflects on human helplessness and the journey of life. (Some may say a lyricist's playground) 😏 (hehehe)

    This is the song that got me hooked on the dude. That baseline and the chorus is just _mmmuahh_
    Also all the sorcery, which is more obvious in the music video.
    *Not sure about this one, but I heard on the interwebz that this track is a diss to El-P of Run The Jewels. Don't really know or care or care to know though.

      I always felt like it could be about EL-P too, or maybe the whole Def Jux era underground scene ( root of the scene), but it just a guess. They were really close, had a falling out, both at the root of the scene, RTJ has mad braggadocio raps, they also ascended to a pedestal but I don't recall him patronizing those that didn't. Quite a few other lines in there but they could all apply to other rappers or scenes. Saeed thanks for the great reaction and breakdown, the whole Impossible Kid album is fire. Do Jumping Coffin its a banger. I still think you should do this one "Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire ft. Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown, EL-P - The Last Huzzah (Remix)" it's got bars.

    • @durere
      @durere 27 днів тому +1

      @@anthonyv6962 Oh yeah, the last huzzah is a certified banger. I see what you're saying, but as I've stated, finding out who this song is for in particular would just subtract from my listening pleasure. As it stands, it could be about most of them. and that is fine.

    5:30 I agree with your assessment. I’d also like to suggest an added layer of meaning: he was on the cutting edge of the underground scene when it was still a bunch of rappers connecting via MySpace. It was when the kids who grew up on Pharcyde revolted against the mainstream rap scene to accidentally establish a different hip hop ecosystem

    • @damienperry5758
      @damienperry5758 26 днів тому

      My point exactly, all of these small time record labels popped up in response to the divergence from mainstream rap. Now, those small time record labels are giants in the rap scene, even though you won’t hear their music on the radio. “I’ve been ignored for longer than you’ve been interested”

    • @arexyouxepicxenough
      @arexyouxepicxenough 26 днів тому

      @@damienperry5758 I agree, El-P is known as the RTJ guy now but that dude was pioneering a rap scene selling 100k+ on records before the internet culture aspect even really had a foothold. Def Jux was like the first foot in the door for an indy label like that that actually had the reach and connects to legitimately make money, no disrespect to competing labels or anything but they were the big ones. Like Labor Days sold crazy. Go to someone Like Immortal Technique he was also selling crazy as an underground guy.
