Why Do Catholics Pray to the Saints?

  • Since it is All Saints Day, Brother Ignatius Pio and Fr. Mark-Mary answer the age-old, controversial question, “Why do Catholics Pray to the Saints?” The word “saint” is all over the Bible, although it is often translated as something different like “holy ones” or “just ones.”
But when we talk about the saints we are usually talking about the canonized saints, those the Church has raised up as examples of holiness. We’re not saying they’re superhuman, but that these people led lives worth looking into and imitating in our attempts to follow Christ.
The saints were deeply involved in the salvation of souls on earth, and continue that same work in heaven. When we honor them, we do not worship the saints. We are saying “Thank you, God, for this person’s life.”
God wants us to participate in his work and the work of the saints. So we work together, doing everything we can to save as many souls as we can. With that end in mind, why wouldn’t we ask for the help of those who lived such holy lives on earth? Death did not separate them from the Church. As St. Paul said:
“If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied” (1 Corinthians 15:19).
As Fr. Mark-Mary and Br. Ignatius Pio say, it just makes sense to pray to the saints.

thank you so much. i grew up in eastern mysticism. i gave my life to christ 7 years ago but backslid into pagan practices while i was in medical school, i mixed light w darkness. then one day, i realized only Jesus loves me and went crawling back to Him and repented. i got book of Job-ed about a month later, which cleared my plate clean, and gave God free reign over my life. it's been a grueling 2.5 years, i wouldn't wish my path on anyone! then as the Lord brought me into the promise, He started showing me things about my life that i had forgotten---like praying to jesus at 5 years old at my catholic school (st joseph's school for girls). for about eight months i thought the voice in my head that kept saying "judah maccabee" was from satan because i couldn't find it in my bible! but then i found it was in the catholic bible which is a the FULL BIBLE---He wanted me to learn about purgatory! which cleared up all of the confusion i had about what happens after death, and my constant wondering if God was actually just & fair. i slept like a baby that night. when i asked Him about Mary He took me to revelation 12, and i texted my "catholic mom" about it and she told me it was actually the daily reading for that day! this is the blessed path. i think it would be hard to become catholic with my background, i definitely needed to be protestant first. protestantism is kind of basic christianity in my eyes, it's what helped me read much of my bible & seek the Lord day and night. also many of the churches are 501c3 and because of that they can't express views about abortion etc. sunday is my first mass, the deacons daughter is meeting me so i don't have to be alone. 😊 when i first got saved, i had to go to church alone. it was very hard. thanks for listening to my story! the Lord is my everything!

The context of 1 Timothy 2 demonstrates this to be true. Just before St. Paul declared Christ to be our one, unique mediator/intercessor, he commanded all Christians to be intercessors (or mediators) Why would I go to the saints when I can go straight to God? The answer is not an either/or proposition. It’s both/and! One could say just as well: Why would I ask my brother in Christ to intercede for me when I can go to Christ, the perfect intercessor? The Catholic answer is: because God commands us to pray for one another.

Alfredo Díaz del Castillo but we don’t actually know if these people went to heaven? Only God knows the heart and our judgement is flawed compared to His? I’m confused. Why would we need this in the church in the first place it makes things confusing.

@@Greengreen-qv3be , you are right, only God knows, we have to believe the word of God: "But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth." 1 Tim. 3:15. We could not know for ourselves which books belong in the Bible, we have to trust the Church discerned infallibly the canon of the Bible. The Church studies the lives of the saints to see if they lived and died a heroic faith and ask Jesus for several proven miracles to prove these people were true believers. Good point! Why saints though? Did the Bible ever say make saints, ask them for intersession, name churches after them and statues. We are his creations he loves us. I don’t think it’s the same thing exactly as believing in other made up Gods. I just don’t understand why it’s a thing in the first place.

DCavalcade Hello...I did had to work through this many years ago as I converted to Catholicism from Baptist. I needed Scripture to back it all up and I made this list. I hope it helps you:
5 Things About Asking Saints to Pray for Us
      * First of all, Christians are all called to be saints, which is to live a holy life. Many have done this in a profound way...even died for the faith as martyrs. We have many “holy heroes” to be inspired by. (Romans 1, 1 Corinthians 1, 2 Corinthians 1, Ephesians 2)
      * Second, according to the Bible, there is ONE body of Christ, those “on earth” and those who are in Heaven. We brothers and sisters who are “in Christ” are not ever separated from the body of Christ by our physical death...we are united forever! (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Hebrews 12)
      * Third, according to the Bible, we are supposed to pray for each other (intercede) and to pray “without ceasing”. Since we are “one body of Christ” as mentioned before then praying isn’t only for those “on earth” but also to those in Heaven. (James 5, 1 Thessalonians 5, Ephesians 6, Romans 15)
      * Fourth, the Bible tells us that those in Heaven have “eternal life” and that our God is the “God of the living and not the dead”. (John 3, Luke 20, Mark 12)
      * Fifth, the Bible tells us that saints in Heaven deliver prayers to God. Since we know those in Heaven do not need prayer any longer then we can assume the prayers must be for those of us here “on earth”. (Revelation 5, Revelation 8)

He said to them, “When you pray, say:
    “‘FATHER hallowed be your name,
    your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
    Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.’”

Any good dictionary will tell you prayer can simply mean a petition or entreaty from one person to another. It does not necessarily mean there is worship involved. Earlier forms of English presented less difficulty with the word. One could say to another, “Pray tell…” or, “I pray thee, my Lord…” Ironically, we see several examples of this usage in the King James Bible-a Bible many Fundamentalists hold in especially high regard. For example, when Bathsheba makes a request of King Solomon in 1 Kings 2:20, she says: “I pray thee, say me not nay.” There is no question here of whether Bathsheba was worshipping her son! She was not. Nor are Catholics when we pray to saints..

Born Again, When Catholics say they "pray" to saints, they are talking about something essentially different from praying to God. We use the same word for both, but each kind of prayer is very different in nature. Prayer to God includes the worship that is owed him alone. Prayer to saints includes the honor that is their due, but never worship. In that sense, Catholics can agree with Protestants that prayer to God is unique. The problem here is, at least in part, semantics.
Any good dictionary will tell you prayer can simply mean a petition or entreaty from one person to another. It does not necessarily mean there is worship involved. It was just in my stuff out of nowhere and none of my family members had seen it before or even knew what it was. I'm in college and am in discernment, so I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt to pray it! But, with your experiences and knowledge as CFR's, do you know if there is any special intention that usually goes with praying St. Anthony's chaplet besides looking for lost things? Should I just start praying it, continue staying open to the Lord, and just see what happens? Am I overthinking it?

Start asking St Anthony to helped you decide. What some people misunderstood is that, the novena prayer usually start by praising God the father and his son Jesus Christ by leading you an example thru St Anthony and asking the saint to intercede for you as well. Thats it. If you read other novenas, it all started the same way. Frankly, we dont directly pray to the saint, we are asking them to helped us pray.

      Lee X
The sleep of the dead is only referring to the body and not the soul. On the last day all souls who have passed will be reunited with their bodies.
Consider these verses with my commentary:
The saints can see, understand and have a great interest in what is happing on earth,...Revelation 6:10
they cried out with a loud voice, "O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell upon the earth?"
In Luke 16:22-28 the rich man cries out to Abraham (not God). This is not because Abraham is greater then God or even a type of god. It is simply Abraham fulfilling his role in Gods plan (Luke 16:22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom.). Furthermore the rich man seemingly prays to Abraham on behalf of his family still alive in the flesh. I believe the rich man is in purgatory type state because of his reverence to Abraham and his concern for his family. Also Abraham says “great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able”. Why would any soul want to go to the place of torment other then to help souls?
Also Our Lord gives us His on example of interacting with the Saints... Matthew 17:3
And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Eli'jah, talking with him.
As it refers to the Blessed Mother. Well Jesus observed the commandments perfectly and this would include “honor” your mother and your father. If She was worthy of honor from God well it appears we are to be Christ like.
Furthermore the Angel Gabriel addressed the Blessed Mother with honor. Elisabeth “filled with the Holy Spirit” addressed Her with honor. And maybe most importantly Luke 2:34-35 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also),that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed." Hearts are revealed in thought (prayer).
There is more but this is what I could come up with for now.

Thank you for the explanation and clarification on this topic. Pretty much everyone uses this part of our prayers with the saints as the “worship of other people” . Than to worship and Glorify God. I try to explain it this way. Say someone comes up to and asked “Hey friend could you pray for this or that. And for the situation they are in?” People get that cuz you are asking a live person. However I tell them it’s perfectly ok to ask our loved ones to pray with us. After all the people in heaven are so much more alive than we ever could obtain here on earth. God Bless

As a Catholic who finds himself somewhat regularly having to answer non-Catholic Christian's questions and attacks regarding the notion that we pray "TO" the saints and Mary, I think the way we typically word asking the Saints and Mary to pray "FOR" us, to intercede "FOR" us, as praying "TO" the saints and Mary is problematic. 1) Many poorly catechized Catholics actually believe they are praying "TO" Mary and the saints, which would be idolatry if true. 2) The plain interpretation of praying "TO" Mary and the saints is that we are actually praying "TO" them versus asking them to pray or intercede "FOR" us. That leads many outside the group of well-catechized Catholics to believe that Catholics are idol worshippers. We ought to make it more of a point to describe what we do as asking Mary and the saints to pray "FOR" us or intercede "FOR" us, which is Biblical (James 5:16, Colossians 1:9-12).

After watching this, I still have remaining questions for anybody who would like to respond:
    1. If we can pray to saints in heaven, can we pray to anybody in heaven?
    2. If the answer to #1 is no, why not? Because saints are chosen by men, and are not appointed the title by God.

Happy All Saints Day and thank you for your video.
I get what you're saying and all, but I (and I think other people as well) do struggle with accepting the concept of _praying_ *to* Mother Mary or the saints.
I see prayer as a conversation reserved only for God (like worship is), although I might be willing to change my perception of prayer if someone whose authority I accept in this matter were to convince me otherwise.
I have no issues conversing with, or asking for the intercession of, Mother Mary, the saints, my guardian angel, or even my fellow human beings ... but that doesn't apply really to prayer for me.

    • @robonymous4620
      @robonymous4620 4 роки тому

@@Cos263 First of all, what does your comment have at all to do with this thread? Nothing. And I don't think you really care about the answer. Trolling just wastes everybody's time and energy, resulting in further frustration and division. That being said, I will give you some of mine nonetheless, as an act of mercy, because maybe, if you are as open as you are to other religions, it may actually help you and lead you to the one true faith: Catholicism. There are so many more layers to this than what I will give you here, but this will be a start. If you actually care, it will be up to you to delve deeper.
The main reason why we care is precisely _because we _*_love_* ... both God and neighbor.
What does it mean to love God and neighbor? True love of neighbor (not the worldly love) desires what is truly best for our neighbor: Eternal Life with God in Paradise (Heaven). God (the *One* and *Only* True God, that is) wants this for all of us.
Since God Himself already is Heaven (the Alpha and the Omega), to love God is to keep His commandments. Jesus even specified this directly, for example, in John 14:15 : "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments."
As you should know, the first and _most important_ commandment (The Great Commandment) is mainly this: "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, The LORD alone! Therefore, you shall love The LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.". You can read the rest of Deuteronomy and the rest of the Bible for greater depth.
What you're talking about is called *Religious Indifferentism* , and it's a massive heresy, because there is only One God and One Way to Him. Anything else is a direct violation of that first and most important commandment. Jesus Himself even specifically declares, for example in John 14:6, " *I AM* The Way and The Truth and The Life. *No one comes to The Father except through Me.* "
As I said, there is so much more that I could get into about morality, relativism, and so forth, but I've already given you more time than I can actually afford. I hope this helps you. May God bless and keep you always, and I wish you the peace of Christ. 🕆📿❤

There is a big difference in praying "for" someone and praying "to" someone. The Catholic church does not pray "for" saints, they pray "to" saints. They are not interchangeable in the way that you seem to describe. Praying "to" someone is one of the highest forms of worship, one that is only meant for God and the Messiah who are one and the same. Praying "to" saints is putting them at the same level as God, and that is very wrong.

Necromancy is speaking to the dead, which the Bible prohibited.
What is the difference between us asking saints for intercession, and witches asking for intercession from Demons?

    • @SS-wt7kc
      @SS-wt7kc 4 роки тому +1

Well, saints are fully united with God and pray to Him for us. The petitions we have are fully acknowledged to be answered by the power of the one, true God who is the source of all grace.
Necromancy seeks spirits to answer petitions or answer questions about the future etc... it is therefore forbidden since it is treating the spirits of the dead as a source of power (false gods). Also, it sometimes treats spirits as things to be commanded by people like a servant. This is all very evil and dangerous since it opens people up to possession or oppression by evil spirits.
If we pray for each other on earth, why would that change when we are in heaven?

    • @SS-wt7kc

However, scripture does tell us that the Son and Holy Spirit make intersession for us.

Jesus wants us to pray for each other, too. In Psalm 103 we pray, “Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word! Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers that do his will!” (Ps. 103:20-21). And in the opening verses of Psalms 148 we pray, “Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his host!”
Not only do those in heaven pray with us, they also pray for us. In the book of Revelation, John sees that “the twenty-four elders [the leaders of the people of God in heaven] fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints” (Rev. 5:8). Thus the saints in heaven offer to God the prayers of the saints on earth.
Nor are Catholics when we pray to saints.

Catholics know the only power of saints is to be united to Jesus.
Catholics pray with the saints. When Catholics say they pray to saints, they are talking about something essentially different from praying to God.

If we just go through any spiritual channel by just praying to a dead saint for answers you can surprisingly get a demon who will know you are not going through the high priest and attack you. Jesus said confess your sins to each other (those alive) and pray for each other but He didn't says ask someone below the high priest (Jesus Christ in the throne room) to answer your prayer. Yes you are correct on pray FOR each other but to pray TO each other

Why pray to the dead or bow down and pray or ask for the intercession from Mary. Only Jesus Christ is the mediator between God and Men, not Mary nor the twelve apostles. Only the living can intercede for the living. Praying to the dead is witch craft and divination and Nacromamcy.

I dont know i haven't prayed to any saint in almost 7 yrs and i have had many more prayers answered by just praying to God. I have found when you just do what scripture teaches He hears you.
John 9:31 Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.
No im not perfect i still fall short some times but then, i always pick myself up and move forward. Doesn't need to be complicated.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

Well you never know, if more prayer would have been answered if you asked the saints in heaven to intercede for you. How do you? Please let me know. Thank you and God bless you.

@@bernfriedmuller1614 well in my own experience i have always in prayer addressed God directly, there has never (that i can remember) been one time where i have prayed and have not addressed God. I am a cradle catholic and in my younger days i prayed to Mary frequently in my prayers as well. The last time i prayed to Mary was probably about 7 yrs ago. Whatever prayers were answered then which where few i attribute to the fact that i poured my heart out to God himself. Since i have left off of saint prayers i have noticed that my prayers have been answered much more frequently and more boldly.
Scripture just doesn't teach it, there are no commands or examples of it. Scripture teaches us to come boldly to the throne of grace, and without faith it is impossible to please God, see hebrews 4:16, and hebrews 11:6.
I cant think of any bolder way to pray then to pour out ones heart to God with the expectation that he will answer. And that is the kind of faith He demands of us.

@@bernfriedmuller1614 all this with the difference of worship and veneration and dulia and latria, just seems like a bunch of word games. Jesus says obey my commandments and you will ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you, and one of those commandments is you shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve. See John 15:7, and Matthew 4:10.

@@leeenk6932 Well first of all I am happy that we are one in the body of Christ. For me it is like asking someone on earth for prayer. Noone would say anything against that. If I would ask Mose in heaven to pray for me they say I pray to the dead. But what about the transfiguration on the mount when Jesus talked to Mose and Elijah (and they told Jesus all heaven is talking about the upcoming crucifixion...). So if Jesus talks to someone in heaven I can pray to them, or? Because I believe they are alive. To summon the dead would be using a medium and other occurlt or spriistic thechnquis so they can speak to the dead better to evil spirits. What do you think? Blessings. And Prayers.
Ps. Keep your prayer life as it is, but do not tell someone else how they have pray like the most holy rosary...

    Interpretations of the saints vary.
For example, Protestant interpretations vary according to various perceptions of time before or after death. But some Roman Catholics interpret I Corinthians 6:2-3 in regards to the Saints in Heaven.
"Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life!"
Prayer of the Saints in Heaven is Biblical. 🙏

Are the heroes and heroines of the Old Testament also considered to be Saints?
Can Catholics pray to Noah, Abraham, and Moses?

I noticed that the two bearded hombres didn't answer your question.I am sure they are too busy with their devotions.I prefer the old testament to the new testament and find it full of spiritual mentors and saints!Men who heard the voice of God and will assist you if respectfully asked.Just my opinion.

"Canonized Saints," is a man-made title. Jesus tells us the proper way to pray in the NT. Our Father who is in Heaven ... He NEVER states we should pray to the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist or any one else. God can AND will AND desires to hear our prayers. There is no need, no requirement, to pray to ANYONE else but God. As a matter of fact, I would respectfully say that it is UnBiblical to pray to anyone other than God. P.S. it does border on idolotry. Also, we're not coworkers with God. We pray to God and ask him to intercede. God bless you both.

I really love this brothers union theology. Beautiful stuff. But, after hearing his explanation I think then, it should be reworded from "Praying to saints" to "Asking saints to intercede for us"
And I am protestant so, still, Jesus Christ is our mediator, and I firmly believe we should bring all things to the Father, Through the Son and by the Holy Spirit. And living life out of a place of constant communion from that place.
But if you reword it from praying to saints, to asking saints to intercede for you, that would make alot more sense by what your describing. Although I really cant see how asking the dead to pray for the living helps. But God looks at the heart.

    We as Christians are saints.
    1 Corinthians 6:2
Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
    1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
    Matthew 23:9
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

    Paul said in 1Corinthians 11:1
“Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ”.
    Do you imitate Jesus Christ?
    In Matthew 17:3-4, Mark 9:4, Luke 9:30
Jesus talked to Elijah & Moses from Heaven here on earth in front of the Apostles. 👈😳👇
Do you talk to the Saints from heaven like Jesus?
