Understanding the Authority of the Catholic Church

  • Brother Lawrence returns with Fr. Mark-Mary after telling his story, and this time they talk about understanding the authority of the pope in the Church. Coming from an evangelical background actually helped Brother Lawrence understand how leaders can be broken. Nonetheless, when you find out about the sins of someone you look up to, that doesn’t invalidate the good you’ve experienced through them. God can use imperfect people to accomplish his work. In fact, there is no other way to do so because we are all imperfect.
Pope Benedict XVI, in his book Call to Communion, said “The pope has always been both petros and skandalon.” The pope has always been the foundation stone of the Church (petros) and a stone that people trip over, a stumbling block (skandalon). Scandal has always plagued the Church, and this may be a stumbling block for some, but the Church has always stood tall in the midst of it all, because God can still accomplish his will through our frailty and despite our sins.

I've pondered that many times also about God's gifts and our sinfulness, and God always leads me to Matthew 5:45, "for the sun rises on the good and the evil, and does not the rain fall on the just and the unjust". 3 you shall have no other gods before me.
4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, 6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation[b] of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.
8 Remember the sabbath day , and keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work. 10 But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work-you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.
12 Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

Thanks for this great ministry - love your honesty from the heart, and plain language, which end up being an expression of humility - I'm drawn in - nearly feel like I'm sitting at table with you. Great insight here: “God gives gifts which will remain even when the person is sinful” - yes. This helpful reminder makes me think of the first King of Israel (Saul), or the 2nd King of Israel (David), or the third King of Israel (Solomon), etc. - God loves us, and gifts us with free will - when we freely choose God's way with that gift of free will, we are “free in God”, and God waits for this response of love from us. Another great line: “God worked through these sinful broken men, because that’s the way God does it … God’s promises are not broken”” - I can identify with that. Thanks again.

Being able to recognize good authority, or the authority of an office and being obedient to it is humility. As St john Climacus said "Humility is the only thing no devil can imitate" ..find someone "willfully" disobedient and you'll see the devil crouching at their door.

I appreciate this heart-felt expression of love for the Roman Catholic Church by Brother Lawrence, and I agree many of his points. Primarily, I agree that we do all sin, and fall hopelessly short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23).
However, these sins were repeated AND enabled by the Roman Catholic Church, all the way up to the level of the Cardinalate. In Matt 18 and Heb 12, God provides for church discipline, including pastors and elders in the church, Catholic or Protestant. God is showing us His loving care in providing these clear, procedural steps to protect congregants from the sins of their leaders, and the Roman Catholic Church has repeatedly and deliberately ignored them over both years and centuries past.
When an institution of men uses scripture, the NT and OT, to elevate itself to a position of authority above the word of God, then that institution has given itself primacy over that scripture, and that scripture, that very Word of God, becomes subject to the whims of this institution of man. It appears obvious that the Roman Catholic Church has indeed so insinuated itself, to the destruction of so many unknown and countless lives, all for the sake of maintaining itself as the inarguable/immutable/infallible "church of Jesus Christ."
This is why I'm no longer a Catholic. This is why I pray for the people who remain in the Roman Catholic Church, that God will protect them from this "Catholic Church" until He leads them to a place of safety, in accordance with His immutable will...and NOT the will of that Church that seeks to use them for what is right in their own eyes (Jud 21:25).

Luke K In the Apocalypse we clearly see "souls under the altar"--undoubtedly, those belonging to the righteous dead--who are very much conscious:
"I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne; 10 they cried out with a loud voice, 'O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before thou wilt judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell upon the earth?'” (Rev 6:9-10).

@@callmebigboy6411 This brings up the age old conversation about what is called "Soul Sleep". It's a very interesting topic and I think there are verses which promote both sides. Death is very commonly referred to as sleep in the New Testament by Jesus, the writers of the book of Acts, and the Apostle Paul.
I appreciate you bringing it to my attention, but don't be so quick to accuse others of "trying to contradict the Bible". So often when we try to pick the speck out of someone's eye, the log in our own hits them over the head.
The discussion on whether or not souls sleep after death or are brought directly to judgment is a secondary issue here. My point is that it is true that our help comes from the Lord, the maker of Heaven and Earth. I would go as far to say that there is absolutely no reason to come to Mary or any of the saints in prayer, since we have the sole mediator between God and man acting on our behalf, and he is 100% loving and merciful and willing for us to be saved.

Judas was a man given spiritual authority to heal, preach and exorcise spirits. He fell. So I can believe that real ministries can have leaders that fall. It’s unfortunate but I think it’s possible. I am terribly curious about and must study into the claimed authority of the Catholic Church. Because I feel like they’ve gotten some things wrong, in terms of understanding scripture (but hey maybe I’m wrong). But they are the Church that got to keep the name “Catholic” a beautiful name indicating that the church is “universal” and they claim to be able to trace their “lineage” to Peter.
May God help me to understand

I would say the Adventist Church I grew up in has a similar interpretation of Matt 16, but the emphasis being on those who received Christ's Spirit (saints), not lineage. Yet, even saints have the liberty to muddy their garments.
“And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained.” The Holy Spirit was not yet fully manifested; for Christ had not yet been glorified. The more abundant impartation of the Spirit did not take place till after Christ's ascension. Not until this was received could the disciples fulfill the commission to preach the gospel to the world. But the Spirit was now given for a special purpose. Before the disciples could fulfill their official duties in connection with the church, Christ breathed His Spirit upon them. He was committing to them a most sacred trust, and He desired to impress them with the fact that without the Holy Spirit this work could not be accomplished.
The Holy Spirit is the breath of spiritual life in the soul! The impartation of the Spirit is the impartation of the life of Christ. It imbues the receiver with the attributes of Christ. Only those who are thus taught of God, those who possess the inward working of the Spirit, and in whose life the Christ-life is manifested, are to stand as representative men, to minister in behalf of the church.
“Whosesoever sins ye remit,” said Christ, “they are remitted; ... and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained.” Christ here gives no liberty for any man to pass judgment upon others. In the Sermon on the Mount He forbade this. It is the prerogative of God. But on the church in its organized capacity He places a responsibility for the individual members. Toward those who fall into sin, the church has a duty, to warn, to instruct, and if possible to restore. “Reprove, rebuke, exhort,” the Lord says, “with all long-suffering and doctrine.” 2 Timothy 4:2. Deal faithfully with wrongdoing. Warn every soul that is in danger. Leave none to deceive themselves. Call sin by its right name. Declare what God has said in regard to lying, stealing, idolatry, and every other evil. “They which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:21. If they persist in sin, the judgment you have declared from God's word is pronounced upon them in heaven. In choosing to sin, they disown Christ; the church must show that she does not sanction their deeds, or she herself dishonors her Lord. She must say about sin what God says about it. She must deal with it as God directs, and her action is ratified in heaven. He who despises the authority of the church (not always necessarily an institution) despises the authority of Christ Himself.
But there is a brighter side to the picture. “Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted.” Let this thought be kept uppermost. In labor for the erring, let every eye be directed to Christ. Let the shepherds have a tender care for the flock of the Lord's pasture. Let them speak to the erring of the forgiving mercy of the Saviour. Let them encourage the sinner to repent, and believe in Him who can pardon. Let them declare, on the authority of God's word, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9. All who repent have the assurance, “He will have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities; and Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” Micah 7:19.
Let the repentance of the sinner be accepted by the church (here all members come into play, church not necessarily to mean a hierarchy) with grateful hearts. Let the repenting one be led out from the darkness of unbelief into the light of faith and righteousness. Let his trembling hand be placed in the loving hand of Jesus. Such a remission is ratified in heaven.
Only in this sense has the church power to absolve the sinner. Remission of sins can be obtained only through the merits of Christ. To no man, to no body of men, is given power to free the soul from guilt. Christ charged His disciples to preach the remission of sins in His name among all nations; but they themselves were not empowered to remove one stain of sin. The name of Jesus is the only “name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, and Thessalonians were all early churches established by the Apostles. The scripture was written to correct the people in the church established. Acts I know was written by Luke, Corinthians was written Paul. So yes, it is more than just a group of people who make up the church; there were actually early churches the Apostles tried to establish and teach and establish tradition in. The Catholic church historically is the closest church to the churches established at that time. 1 Corinthians 11:1 Be imitators of me, as I am Christ. I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions, just as I handed them on to you.
As far as giving the Apostles authority, it is clearly done all throughout scripture. I have more if you want?
      1 Corinthians 5:3-6
"I, for my part, although absent in body but present in spirit, have already, as if present, pronounced judgement on the one who has committed this deed, in the name of our Lord Jesus: When you have gathered together and I am with you in spirit with the power of the Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
      Mathew 10:1
Then he summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness
      Mark 6:7
And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.
      Mark 16:17
"These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues
      Luke 9:1-2
And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing.
And lastly, no, there is no place in the Bible that says you have to confess to a priest or apostles or whatever. But it does say you must confess to God and your brothers and sisters. The Catholic church however, was smart enough to realize that priests typically are to be trusted, and they have authority, through apostolic succession, so why not allow us to confess through them TO God? They also have the knowledge to direct us to a more healthy relationship to God, as opposed to your friend who has put in nowhere near the amount of time studying the Gospel. I can tell you right now, confession is the most grace filled experience other than the Eucharist.
Just some thoughts, don't mean to be rude what so ever. Just sharing the other side and am open to being corrected.

Mark 3:16; John 1:42 - Jesus renames Simon “Kepha” in *Aramaic* which literally means “rock.” The New Testament was written in Greek. Those outside of the Church mistakenly assume Jesus changed Simon's name using Greek. Making Peter “a small rock”. Using Petros to translate Kepha was done simply to reflect the masculine noun of Peter.
Matt. 16:17 - to further demonstrate that Jesus was speaking Aramaic, Jesus says Simon “Bar-Jona.” The use of “Bar-Jona” proves that Jesus was speaking Aramaic. In Aramaic, “Bar” means son, and “Jonah” means John or dove (Holy Spirit).

I really appreciate the gentleness if these two men. However I have left comments on this ascension page before many times and they have not been addressed. I will maybe just go one at a time.
The Greek rendering of Matthew 16 has two different words for Peter and rock. There is a misleading in saying that Peter is a the rock bed when the Greek clearly does not say this. Although there is sincerity within the Catholic Church I believe that it is the idea of a lie being repeated over and over again that eventually becomes the truth. And this is what I mean by that accusation. The word Peter in Greek is petros which does not mean rock bed or foundation stone or anything that you would build a foundation on. It means small stone. And Jesus goes on to say...” you are Peter (Petras - small stone ) and upon this rock ( Petra - rock cliff or boulder ) I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. 2 points
    1. I believe Jesus is referring to Isaiah 44:8 Fear not, nor be afraid;
have I not told you from of old and declared it?
    And you are my witnesses!
Is there a God besides me?
There is no Rock; I know not any."
    2. Often people seem to look at this passage and think that somehow the gates of hell are beating down on the universal church and that somehow the church will survive this onslaught from the gates of hell. This can not be the case gates are a means of defence. It is hell and it’s gates that will not be able to withstand what the church does.

To deny the papacy is equal to deny the meaning of the diciples.
To deny the meaning of the diciples is equal to deny apostolic sucession.
To deny apostolic sucession is equal to deny the mission of a christian.
To deny the mission of a christian is to deny the decision of Christ to whom he chose to feed his sheep.
    Authority lies with Christ.
    In which Christ chose Peter.
And since the death of Peter the keys had to be passed from pope to pope.
But the papacy is nulified if the pope is a heretic.
No reformation of modernist filth will ever change this.
The teacher chooses him among the apostles to be one of witnesses (next to two or three others) of the resurrection of the daughter of Jairus (Mk 5,37; Lk 8,51) of his transfiguration (Mk 9,2-3 ), of his agony (Mk 14,33, Mt 23,37), to prepare the last supper (Lk 22,8): Peter, then, is always part of this
group and like the first. He will also be, among the twelve, the first witness of the resurrection (Lc 24,12-34; 1Cor 15,5).
It is an effective authority, formally recognized or conferred from the beginning. The evangelists, in appointing the apostles in order, and in indicating the one in charge of them, do not fail to indicate the defects of Peter. His choice is not due to his own merits, nor to his impulsive or enterprising character nor to a more ardent faith. In fact, it is he who wins the reproach: "Man of little faith, why have you doubted?" (Mt 14,31). He himself, the day of his inauguration, takes the hardest of the reprimands: "Behind me, Satan, you are a stone of scandal to me, because your feelings are not those of God, but those of men" (Mt 16 , 23, Mc
8.33). He is the first one to whom Jesus washes his feet at dinner (Jn 13:10); he will be the most guilty with Judas, because he will deny Christ three times (Mt 26,34,58-75).
Long live the church of Christ the christian catholic church.
    God bless.

The pope very recently said you don't have to believe to be saved. He told a young boy his dad was accepted by Jesus, because he had his son confirmed. Being in Italy living in Rome, it's pretty standard a practice, like non Christians, baptize infants in the UK.
Considering the pope doesn't believe the bible, and doesn't care that the Holy Spirit testifies with the spirit of the believer, that he is saved and not because he decided they are, then he has no authority, apart from the Lord allowing him to cause corruption to his word and lead all of you to believe him over the authority of the Bible.
How does the pope have a heart to lie about salvation, that you can be anything and say you believe in God or not believe in God and as long as you weren't to bad then your God's child.?
Its likely that he doesn't have the Holy spirt or know God at all, which is why he's building a church claiming universal salvation for all. JOHN CHAPTER 17.

That's right. Jesus Christ was given full authority of heaven and earth. When you are given authority like the Father gave to His Son, you can delegate that authority. Jesus gave His authority to the Catholic Church (Apostles) and made the bishop of Rome His vicar on earth. With that authority, the Apostles ordained the priests and deacons and gave permission for the priests to hear confessions. It took me a long time for me to see the authority of the Catholic Church in scripture. I'm thankful that Jesus Christ was patient with me and kept drawing me to His Catholic Church. Once I did, I saw all the doctrines in Scripture that I previously thought was unbiblical.

If Christ had said to Peter “you are Petros and on you I will build my church”, that would have been clear.
But instead Christ said you are Petros and on “this Petra” I will build my church. Which even among an assessment by a French Roman Catholic of church fathers showed there were several interpretations; 17 thought Peter was the rock, 44 that Peter’s confession of Christ as the Son of God is the the Rock.
Several scriptures tell us Christ is the Rock(1 Corinthians 10:4), He is the “Rock of offense” that those who believe in Him will not be put to shame(Romans 9:33), His sayings are the Rock the wise man builds his life on(Matt 7:24/25), Jesus is the foundation(1 Corinthians 3:11) of the Body(which is the Church).
So when looking at Matthew 16 and Ephesians 2:20 it’s more likely that the confession of Jesus as the Christ was the Rock that Jesus would build His church on.
Remember Christ said He knew what was in man. Why would He build His church on a human man inclined to rebellion. He turned right around and called Peter “Satan” right after saying He would build His church on “this rock”. Also He knew Peter would deny Him shortly after and be hypocritical and cause division in the Body.
Jesus doesn’t need to build His church on the faulty foundation of man. He builds His church of Himself and the proclaimed truth of Himself.
It is His Word which will endure and never pass away and He is the Word made flesh.
    He is the Rock.

I would just point you to the New Jerusalem as described in Revelation 21:14 where the 12 foundation stones of the city are inscribed with the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. This seems to suggest that Christ establishes his kingdom and therefore his Church on apostolic foundations. With respect to the primacy of Peter among the apostles, why did Jesus in that moment decide to change Simon Bar-Jona's name to a word that also means rock? The New Testament was written in Greek but Jesus most likely did not speak these words to his apostles in Greek. He probably said them in Aramaic. Does your argument hold true in the original Aramaic spoken by Jesus? As some have suggested in other comments, one reason for the discrepancy can be a desire to use a masculine word which means rock to refer to Peter, a man, so that grammatical gender and his actual gender match up. That seems to only make sense.
The church has always entertained the interpretation that Peter's confession of faith is the rock upon which the Church is built, but it remains PETER'S confession of faith. Why did God, the Father, give only Peter that word with which to respond to Jesus' question? Furthermore, the argument is not just centered on whether or not Peter is the rock and what kind of rock he is. Jesus goes on to give Peter the keys to kingdom and grant him the power to bind and to loose - a power which he later also grants to the apostles collectively, but which he seems here to be granting Peter singularly. This points toward Peter being given a primacy among the apostles.
We always have to be careful with our interpretation of metaphors - making sure we read them as saying what they intend to say and nothing more, nothing less. To say that Peter is the rock is not to deny that Christ is also the rock and a much stronger and more fundamental rock at that. He is the stone rejected by the builders which has become the cornerstone. Without him, there can be no Church. However, that does not mean that we cannot say that in their own way Peter and the apostles are foundation stones upon which the Church is built. Christ has appointed them to this office and scripture read in its totality says as much. Peter's status derives from Christ's commission and grace. It is not parasitic upon or mutually exclusive with respect to Christ's status in his own Church. It is not something Peter has of himself apart from God. Don't read it that way.

The Father revealed to Peter who Christ was and moments later Jesus rebuked Peter for not being mindful of the things of God:
“But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.””
      ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16:23‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
In one moment our Lord calls Peter, “Petros”, and in another He calls him “Satanas”.
Peter never interpreted Jesus as giving him a primacy among the apostles. Peter writes that he is a “fellow elder”.
“The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed:”
      ‭‭I Peter‬ ‭5:1‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
While it’s true that the apostles were the foundation for which the church was built, the ONLY stone laid as the foundation with primacy is the “chief cornerstone”... and that’s Christ. The rest of the apostles are all equal as they professed the Gospel of Christ in fulfilling the Great Commission.

Saul's name is changed to Paul after his encounter with the risen Christ, and he totally changes his life becoming the apostle to the gentiles. Is Jesus' new name for Simon meaningless? Did this renaming also correspond to him being given a particular role and mission in the Church? Scripture seems to bare witness to the fact that when God changes your name, it means something.

@@sanctifiedbytruth6048 As it says in Romans 11:29, the gifts and call of God are irrevocable. Our sinful ways and our tendency not to trust God's word and submit to him does not revoke his call to each and everyone of us to live a Christian life as his sons and daughters in his love. Similarly, Peter's sin does not revoke the fact that God has called him to a particular office and mission in the Church. We can all be "Satanas" at times - refusing to conform to God's will and clinging to our own way - but God does not take back his gifts from us; neither does he take them back from Peter. Additionally, one key difference to note is that Peter is actually Simon's new name. That's what people including Jesus call him from that point on. He calls him Satan in that one instant. He names him Peter, but calls him Satan. One is permanent and the other is momentary. Therefore, how we weigh those names in reference to the person of Simon Peter and who he is has to be different. One may mean more than the other.
I really think it's a stretch to claim that Peter never saw himself as having any primacy among the apostles. To my knowledge, we don't have any record of Peter saying anything outright on the matter. We are left then to build arguments for or against based on the evidence. One big piece of evidence is what Jesus has to say about it. We can also look at what the New Testament records about him and how hierarchy solidified in the days of the early Church. To bring it to modern times, the popes often refer to priests and bishops as 'brother priests' and 'brother bishops' and to Christians generally as 'fellow workers in the vineyard of the Lord'. If Peter has primacy among the apostles, he has to be one of them and necessarily the other apostles are his 'fellows'. In fact on some level, all Christians are his 'fellows' in as much as we share fellowship in the Lord.
Some people seem to think that if Peter really had primacy there should be some record of him lording his power over the apostles and strong-arming them, and since there isn't any clear evidence that Peter did these things he must not have had primacy. I find that a preposterous argument. The exercise of authority in the Church cannot be about pulling ranks and making others fell the weight of one's power. In that same discourse in 1 Peter 5, Peter exhorts pastors not to lord their authority over the flock but to give it a shepherd's care. Interestingly, Peter seems to be addressing his fellow elders with some amount of authority. Some people like to also point out St. Paul's open disagreement with Peter when he refrained from eating with gentiles out of fear that the Christians of Jewish origin would not approve. As I read it, Paul's open challenge to Peter is not irreconcilable with Peter's supremacy. Our leaders in the Christian Church are not sinless and sometimes do need to rebuked or corrected. Primacy is not a guarantee of perfection nor does it imply that one cannot be called out when one is in the wrong.
I still have to disagree with you. Peter was given primacy among the apostles by Christ. I really do believe scripture and history attest to that.

Gents, the whole issue here is that you and I do not follow or believe in the same Creator God. You all venerate and pray to Mary and believe that the Pope is some sort of divinely ordered office. This is all a great mistake to imagine that you and I are both followers and believers of the same Jesus. We are not. Your god, is this world, that is why your church is so worldly... founded in this world its authority in based in this world. Peter didn't give the Roman Church anything... The Emperor Justinian granted your church its authority in a temporal sense. No other authority has ever been granted to your church.

Parents are now advised never to leave their children alone when religious priests are around. Sorry guys, but unlimited access to children is over.
Thankfully in the UK the majority of people have no left religion behind.
