  • Devotion to the Saints-those who have gone before us into heaven-is a worthy endeavor. We can be encouraged by their example; we can be instructed by their teachings; and we can be supported by their prayers. But there's a right and a wrong way to practice any devotion.
Today, Fr. Mark Mary discusses Catholic devotion to the Saints and shows us how to remain neither discouraged nor weird.
Want a whole manual's worth of practical guidance for the spiritual life? Fr. Mark-Mary's got you covered. Check out his book Habits for Holiness: Small Steps for Making Big Spiritual Progress (tinyurl.com/yf....

There is a saint who did pentance in the middle of the desert. I was planning on going to the desert and doing the same. Thank you for stopping me.

At Anthony of the desert. I love him too and wanted to live like him. I often found that when I tried to live radically like that I failed and became discouraged. Then the Lord introduced me to St Therese and her “little way”. Now I try to love people in small ways and it has born much fruit!

As a non-Catholic…praying directly to God, I seldom ask others to pray for me….may the Holy Spirit continue to enrich me of how wonderful it is to ask the Saints to present my petitions/intentions before the Lord. 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾

Excellent presentation Father Mark. I’m sure many of us feel “less than” when we read about the extraordinary sacrifices of the saints. To be inspired as you describe is a step towards holiness. Thanks as always.

Fr. Mark-Mary, I am about halfway through your book now. It is really very good. I should like to send you a book. I will look up if there is an address. Otherwise, I might make more comments here. I especially like the point contrasting sugar and nourishment; this speaks to exactly what I have been working on. And of course, the Happy Birthday cake was quite touching, among other parts. God bless you.

The sugar/nourishment dichotomy made me think of Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs' "Candy Everybody Wants" and The Weeknd's "Starboy." The first says, "If lust and hate is the candy...then we give them what they want." The latter says, "A hundred on the dash get me close to God, we don't pray for love we just pray for cars." I am finding your commentary on culture to be insightful.
I sent you a book in the mail. Talk with you soon. God bless.

Not only is it impossible or unwise to imitate saints, but it is also insulting to God, as in this way we contradict and deny God's creativity! It's as if we were thinking poor God cannot create a unique path for everyone, and we have to save Him the trouble and imitate the most successful ways! In the meantime, however, the living God is unstoppable in creating unrepeatable and inimitable faces, fingerprints, lives, ways and sainthoods! ♥️ So it is insulting to doubt that and live our lives looking around to find who to imitate. Let alone the fact, that holiness won't be a goal itself. If it is made a goal, it will become a prideful trophy dream.
But the truth is, holiness is... a miraculous side effect. Which proves rather surprising to the very person, as they just lived love, not the prideful dream to be saint and to leave everyone else behind.

Being fascinated by saints is, on the other hand, a wonderful way of learning about Jesus, what He liked and disliked about them, what He said, what He is like! And that is the wisdom we are granted in saints! ♥️

I have no idea what they actually think. My own observations and experiences with those protestants from the radical reformation have shown them to believe that any inteceding involving Saints to be idolatry, and somehow takes focus away from Christ. Protestants weren't even on my radar when I originally posted.

It’s mere impossible to become the exact same as any Saint, yes we can use them as inspiration but we can’t be exactly like them. God calls us to be ourselves and exactly what you said Fr Mike Mary, we are unique. Not all of the Saints are the same, they are similar in the way they lived their life being for God but we all have a different story of faith and upbringing. So God uses that to help everyone to become a Saint! God calls all of us to holiness, in different ways and that will never stop us from becoming a Saint!
Thank you Fr Mike Mary, I always love listening to you, may God be with you!

In this series I’m narrating events and miracles from the splendid life of Don Bosco. St John Bosco used to perform a miracle almost every day, through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. From the lives of saints we can learn how to love God more and draw closer to him. Thank you.

I am a lover of the saints. One of my goals is to write a saint's story. I have read about Saint Rose of Lima many times. I respected how she rejected the vanity of the world. As an extremely beautiful woman, she had many opportunities to indulge in vanity. I know if I were extremely beautiful the mirror would be my best friend. Lol. Some of Saint Rose of Lima's extreme penances and mortifications disturb. I cannot imagine the Lord approving of self mutilation. I thought Jesus' crucification paid the price for our sins. I love the easier to understand saints like Saint Zita, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati was full of life. I love that. I think I really like Saint Peter from the Gospel because readers see his human failings. As much as I love the saint stories a lot of them seem to have no flaws or no reason to go confession. Even the penitential saints seem to have experienced a conversion and never sinned again. I am familiar with Saint Mary of Egypt. I would love to see the struggle of still striving after holiness and failing like Saint Peter. He was clearly wrong sometimes. Pray for me that I can finally write this story.

some of that is weird though too. Especially if you're used to ordinary life. So being weird is kind of cool to me :-) I don't believe in physical mortification but I do believe in self-mortification that is unseen more so examining the conscience. To me I think Saint Jean Vianney would hate dancing I remember hearing that. So there are like a lot of dances I don't like and I am a dancer myself. I'm happy I didn't become a specific dancer that would have been dangerous but I enjoy performances and practice dancing.

I have a question. I am Catholic and I had always being Catholic but I do not really believe in Saint. I just don't like how people buy statues and pray for them and all the Catholic churches have some kind of statue of a Saint and this make me really sad because I feel the church is not really following God because God basically order not to worship idols and I feel that some people idealized saint and pray for them and this just make me feel super weird and sad. I know I am Catholic, I love my religion, but I don't understand why people do that. Is this make me less Catholic, or this is something normal and it is ok not to care for saints?

The only Saints are the ones certified by Jesus Christ and God the Father in heaven. The Lord is about to come back soon for His church. The rapture is about to happen. Please seek Him before it's too late. Those left behind will have to die for their faith in Jesus Christ. It's not God's will that anyone perish but all repent to receive eternal life. These are the End Times. Everything written in the book of revelation will be fulfilled.
    Jeremiah 29:13
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
    Proverbs 8:17
17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.
    John 14:21
Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
    Acts 2:17
17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams
    Joel 2:28

No one needs sAINTs when we've got Yeshua the Messiah who is God manifest in the flesh; as if sAINTs could do anything better than God Himself? I don't subscribe to this denomination (or any for that matter) so maybe i just don't "get it", but i can't fathom why anyone would look anywhere other than Christ for guidance. I get that we can learn a lot from church fathers, but why do you call them saints? Aren't we ALL saints? I believe we should strive for unity within the body of Christ, even if we don't agree on every little thing (ie primary vs secondary doctrine). God bless!

So are they sAINTs, or is everyone a Saint?
Does the Bible say to pray for each other or doesn't it? Does the Bible say God is the God of the living or the dead? Do the saints offer the prayers of the faithful to God or do they not? Do the prayers of the righteous availeth much or do they not? Are your desires perfectly formed or are they not?
You're here for a reason. I hope you study the answers to these questions and obtain a fuller understanding of the Church of Christ.
