  • The American comics industry in in trouble heading into 2024. Not surprisingly, the shill media are now willing to admit we are right about the downturn of DC and Marvel Comics. And its enormous negative impacts on the direct market and indie comics publishers. Shill media like Heidi McDonald of the Comics Beat are even conceding these problems started at least 4 years ago. Wes talks about why the shill media can no longer ignore the issues but are still afraid to talk about the details. It only tool 6 years for shill media to admit we are right.

Not all, but plenty of the most of the popular writers of all time led very complex and full lives. JRR Tolkien saw arguably the worst battle in human history at the Somme, JK Rowling was a homeless single mother when she wrote the first Harry Potter book, which was initially rejected. Grisham was a successful attorney himself before he published crime novels. While there are people like George RR Martin who are just obsessive nerds, the current crop of "writers" tend to be either trust fund kids with connections, or mentally-ill people with fashionable identities, or both. These terminally online weirdos don't even like comics, they are not obsessive nerds and they don't have any life experience, it's not possible for them to be good writers and they need to be pushed out of the space.

I am a liberal, lifelong - not a leftie, today's leftism mystifies me, but I am a liberal. And I absolutely loath today's mainstream comics. The political scorekeeping, race/gender/sexuality swapping, and switching out superhero adventure for young adult coming of age stories. Everything in today's comics is artificial - the characters, the art, and most of all, the writing - EVERYTHING is forced into a preordained box; if it doesn't fit, break it and make it fit. This is a recipe for terrible story telling, which is what we have today. I was BORN a comic book fan, no exaggeration - my older brothers were comic book readers, so I was surrounded by comics since the day my folks brought me home, pink and screaming, from the hospital in 1962. I was born the same year as Spider-Man, grew up with him - Peter Parker wasn't just a character to me, he was my role model, and my friend, and if that sounds corny, so be it. I am a lifelong long comics fan... and I haven't bought a mainstream comic book in a few years. I don't celebrate that, I don't cheer the demise of Marvel and DC, I mourn it. I am a lifelong comics reader, a lifelong liberal, and I can't stand today's comic books. And that sucks so bad. Maybe things will change in time to keep the industry from burning down entirely. I'll be watching.

I'm a conservative and agree with everything you said about the comics industry and can relate. See? They want us to hate each other and point out our differences, but when it comes down to the comics we love, we have common ground. We should be united in our love for our favorite superhero comics instead of using the medium to try to divide us. I hope Marvel and DC will get back to hiring creators who respect and love the characters as we do, who respect continuity, and who just want to tell fun, action-packed stories with good drama.

The definition of a 'liberal': A fiscally conservative group think Democrat (New Labor or whatever), with an environmentalist extremest, health food nuttiness, female gender, and minority superiority complex (for distraction purposes). To actually be 'left' one would have a pro-broadly share the economy philosophical outlook, which contrary to popular belief, and contrary to what the establishment wants you to believe, the liberals (or whatever counterpart) definitely do not have in the least.

If they can't attract top talent anymore (which they can't), the the Big 2 need strong editors like they had before the 2000s, strict character bibles, strict contracts regulating the work expectations and personal conduct of the writers/artists. There used to be editors who would say: "This character wouldn't do that. Change it, "Our company doesn't weigh in on politics. Rewrite it." "You may want a pudgy superhero who happens to look like you but that doesn't fly here. Redraw them and make them handsome/beautiful." "Oh, you refuse? You're fired for cause, and you will never work here again." But the key is getting good editors with deep knowledge of the characters and the balls to be confrontational, but that may asking for too much. I really think Mark Millar would be a good EIC but why would he want to babysit a bunch of children?

Yeah its this combined storm of misery from multiple things that each were VERY EASILY AVOIDABLE. Going away from spinracks and magazine stands. Going full work. Doing constant reboots. Focusing on big events. Overcharging for lame content. Driving away good writers. Focusing on collectors instead of fans. Hiring based on identity and sexuality rather than talent and interest. Its a huge number of combined stupidity and failure that inevitably destroys a business.
And when they had a golden opportunity, a real chance to save their industry when comic book movies were huge, but instead were doing girl Thor and gay Superman and none of the groups or characters looked ANYTHING like they were in the movies. Its like the big two are being run by people intentionally trying to destroy their industry.

Another beautifully blunt, direct, succinct explanation of how Marvel and DC destroyed the American superhero comics industry at a time when movies were giving them an unprecedented opportunity to truly expand their audience. And remember, the superhero niche was modern Marvel and DC's specialty; while manga covers an enormous range of genres, Marvel and DC had become 99% about "punch the bad guy in the mouth" superhero stories. They didn't just forget that, that actively sneered at that genre and at the people who supported it. As Tony Stark said in the MCU "Not a good plan."

Roughly around 2014 when GoTG came out as a movie was when Bendis was on everything. This is when they started trying to make the comics more like the move characters. By 2016 with Marvel Now!, everything was in full force with a full staff of poor writers and bad artists. This was also peak time for Marvel trying to phase out characters they didn’t have movie rights to. Remember when they wanted to replace the X-men with the Inhumans? You can point to the… let’s call them stories and values being told as a huge loss in comics but the corporate push for comics to align with movies is just as big a factor.
We will always have back issues 😢

I gave up collecting comics about 8 to 10 years ago. I would spend anywhere from 40 to 80 dollars a week on my books. I collected everything Marvel & some DC. I lost interest when they
started to replace classic characters. They can't make NEW characters because nobody would buy it or even care. So to make people interested or care you have to replace them.
My bridge is burned to buying new comics. My only interest is classic Amazing Spider-Man now. Everything else will never see a dollar of mine.

Im starting to think the whole goal of ESG, DEI in comics and entertainment is to get people to stop caring about American culture. At least old school American culture before the ESG mandates.
Id say the downfall really started in 2012 or maybe 2008. But the point, is that the people in charge of entertainment today have a problem with the culture that most people enjoy and have embraced in the past. And that now they are doing everything they can to destroy what we love to create a new standard in entertainment.
This is why the only real freedom is with the indies.

A perfect example of the drop in quality is Tee Franklin inserting herself as Vixen's girlfriend when Vixen miraculously became homosexual with no explanation. Couple this with artwork worse than most Saturday morning cartoons and it's a shocker people didn't flock to this. I will say this as a fairly new shop owner ( and just my experience, which may not mirror other places ) - yes, the writing is different and while not everyone's cup of tea, modern comic sales at my shop are solid. However what I've noticed is the lack of kids buying books, and who can blame them when it's 4-8 dollars an issue to read? I remember as young as 10 going down to the local shop and seeing other kids my age grabbing books to bring home. That doesn't happen here. I do everything I can to promote younger kids to come in. I have an art class for kids interested in becoming comic book artists taught by a retired former comic book artist. I have a kids comics section for young readers but again, it's the parents bringing their kids over to buy them because they're not priced accordingly. If we're not building the new generation of readers up, who's going to carry the torch for us after we are dead and gone? This is the reason why I worry about the future of this business over anything else politically motivated.

Savage....Savage take down. Well done, Wes. I'm in the liberal side of things and heartily agree with every single call out made as a problem. Let's see if you rocked the boat for long enough and hard enough for them to do something about it. It's clear they HAD to hear it by now...maybe they don't want to listen but they certainly HEAR it now.

The modern comics industry exists largely because it's a cheap way to fail. The goal of management is not as much to have a successful print run, but to develop a stable of characters they can then license out to other media and bring in the passive income. A 4-episode miniseries is just a less-expensive way to introduce new characters and concepts that are, as history has shown, likely to fail. If it does succeed, that money can be recouped as part of the pre-production budget for a film or TV adaptation, acting as a storyboard draft.
The idea of producing comics for the sake of producing comics, to the extent it still exists, has shifted to the indies, which are themselves being shifted to that same IP monetization paradigm.

Both the industry and the consumer base for western comic books suck.
I just recently kicked comics out of my store after a lacklust five years.
BLUF/TLDR: the industry would cause our store monetary damages and the customers would insult us on the other end.
The industry was too concerned with stupid decisions: putting politics into their work, attacking customers on social media, attacking their tradition demographic (white males), crappy service to the local store, crappy discounts tot he local store, crappy shipping costs to the local store, and even when they started seeing the writing on the wall...they STILL made stupid decisions. Marvel is out because of the politics. DC is out because they switched to Lunar Distro which suddenly changed its policy to $500 a month to stock ONLY DC related comics, so if you were in a small area or an area where comics have never truly been able to get a foothold...welp...at this point you as the small store NEVER will. The manga sales in our store when compared to comics also was the driving nail in the coffin along with our more popular sales (games and accessories).
On the other end, the customers are trash. Very demanding and a lack of sympathy (they didn't care it was becoming harder to stock certain things). They didn't care throughout COVID as we suffered, and some would guilt trip us for not being government lapdogs (choosing to not wear the masks). Then when we finally got rid of comics (after lackluster sales), I swear, we have received more reviews to our store from pissed off customers (for not having comics) than we ever did by comic book readers when we had comics (both good and bad). Sorry to say this (as a comic read myself) but our "community" is trash. I am against the gender and sexual politics happening, but I am also against the toxic self-righteous bullshit too.
Needless to say, I have dumped comic books for good and not looking back.

What's funny is that these "people" can only think of what relates to their lives to be put into a comic, hence all the coffee shops and slice of life, and omit what makes a superhero comic interesting - the superheroics.
Which is what makes me jump to Invincible again and how the most interesting part of the cartoon's season 1 run is Mark Grayson's open rejection and not wanting to be superhero thanks to his shitty slice of life break up with Amber, only for him to unknowingly showcase what it is to be a hero by defying his Dad, Nolan, into conquering Earth, even if it cost him his life.

I'm astounded how EPIC FAIL "current year" American comic book writers are. People actually want LGBT, slice-of-life, coming-of-age stories with superheroes IN MANGA and ANIME, because mangaka (Japanese comic book writers and artists) can actually make such stories ENTERTAINING- look at the success of 'Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid' for one of MANY examples.
What's the difference between the SUCCESSFUL Japanese works, and the EPIC FAIL American ones? I think "current year" American writers put too much of themselves in their stories, such that a reader cannot identify with the characters unless they're 100% like these characters, i.e., if they're the creators- in short, these writers are NARCISSISTS and/or SOCIOPATHS who cannot write about characters who aren't 100% like them, and cannot identify with people who aren't 100% like them, as Mags Visaggio repeatedly proves.
I remember when this wasn't the case- I liked Jem despite the fact I'm not a woman, Duke in 'GI Joe' despite the fact I'm not white, and Optimus Prime despite the fact I'm not a giant transforming robot from another world, as all these characters have qualities with universal appeal. But "current year" American writers seem to think these qualities are sexist, racist, homophobic and/or transphobic.

Yep, you all are finally catching up with where I have been since 1995. I stopped buying comics when they forgot how to wrote them. At first it was the "remake virus". Take an old arc and "rewrite it" instead of creating anything. Then it was the "reboot virus" followed by the "message virus". Since I moved around a LOT before the 2000's, my comics from the 70-90's are long gone and I had resigned myself to never be able to read them again. But that changed! I recently discovered Marvel Epic Collections and I now have X-Men 1970 to1983. 1963 to 1970 are on order.
See we can still read comics.
There are 30+ years of real American Comics out there!

I mean, I really did try to stick with DC, no matter the abuse because I adored the characters. But that Gotham War event... paired with Tom King's disgusting Wonder Woman (amazing art, it doesnt deserve that artwork) I'm tapped out. I don't care. I literally don't.
How could I? No one is in character, heroes are acting like Villians and Villians are acting like the heroes should but condemned for it.
I am out. I dont care about Batman or Wonderwoman. Or the world they're involved in if this is who we're dealing with.
A batman who beats and abuses his kids, a batfamily who'd rather side with organised crime than actually uphold the law and protect the people of gotham, a wonder woman who sits by and lets a situation devolve while "sargent steel" skinsuit throws a bitch fit can get fucked. All of them. I just don't care. Maybe if they fire everyone whos responsible for that mess and reboot totally, I might dip back in. For now. No. Im gone. Still looking for back issues, but I never want to see this mess again

When Chuck Dixon was writing for DC I had no idea what his political leanings were. It never even entered into Robin or Punisher War Journal or Batgirl. All I knew about Chuck Dixon is that he wrote books that I wanted to read because they were great stories. He understood and developed the characters and I never thought of them a Chuck Dixon in a skin. Somehow we've lost that in Marvel and DC. This new group of writers need to go back and read what Dixon was doing. Because when you read these it's not Dixon you are reading but Robin and Punisher and Batgirl. It's the simplest lesson of them all but for some reason they can't figure it out. As a writer you are a caretaker of the character. If you become the character you turn the fans off and destory that character
