  • Comic book fans were reminded speaking the truth is the greatest offense one can commit in the comics industry. Glen from Comic Book Palace made a few honest observations about comic book writers in 2023. And comic book pros came with knives out attacking him. The funnies thing is, Glen wasn't even talking about the people who are attacking him. Jamal Igle, Ramon Villalobos and Donny Cates aren't working for the Big 2. And have no major effect on comic customer purchasing in 2023. Wes breaks down the insane reaction to Glen from Comic Book Palace explaining the truth about comics in 2023. Speaking truth is the greatest offense in comics.

“He should change with the times.” These comic pros should be thankful Glenn doesn’t do that, cause changing with the times would mean getting rid of the new comics and committing to manga and tabletop games. Comics are a dying medium and these modern writers are the reason why that’s happening.

Charles Schultz, one of the greatest of all time, once said he started out writing jokes for the Peanuts strip, but after a while, the characters wrote the jokes, all he needed was the setup. How Charlie Brown, or Lucy, or Sally reacted to a situation came from the character, not the writer. Actually knowing your character makes everything work.

As someone who has been reading comics and been a geek for over 40 years I cannot fathom how you can come from that same culture and act like this. Either you became the exact type of people that ostracized you as a kid for reading comics or you never were one in the first place. The comic book industry and geek culture has been infiltrated by pop culture posers. Anyone who grew up in this space knows how it felt to be made fun of and would not treat someone the way this twitter mob has attacked this retailer.

Given everything they stand for, seem to be in the realm of reality doesn't exist and everything is subjective or at least seem to heavily apply that is the case. With their lack of standards. Given they love to pretend everything is fine one moment, then find a reason to pin their failures on others the next.
for these people have done alot of harm, not only to comic industry but story telling in general. Given if we look at their views on representation and diversity. are thing merely existing. Along with these characters have to be stand ins for whole groups of people, a character simply can't be themselves. for they always have to stand for something or someone else. Story rather than being the most important thing, is always put second. Something is always more important than story. While pretending nothing is objective in story telling and it all subjective. they really are leeches. Given they take and take and take. While offering little to nothing in return.

In 2019 I flew out and spent 3 days with Glen at the Comic Book Palace. Me, Glen and Alex did a review on Incredible Hulk 340. You will never meet a more honest and genuine person. Glen is a hell of an individual and I’m proud to call him my comic book retailer and friend. He has been sending me books from across the country for 7 years now. People have no idea how devoted this man is to his customers and the industry itself. Guys like him keep this industry alive and vibrant, however, they can only work with what they are being given.

Ex Comic Book Retailer here but I still dabble in selling TPB/HC/Comics and other assorted collectibles as a sideline to make... yes... profit. That's what Glenn's mission is with his commerce. 30 years of operating a comic book establishment obviously means he gives great service and knows his clientele whether they are 'newbies', long-time fans or the collector looking for the 'Holy Grail' to add to their collection. The gentleman is undoubtedly a living and walking comic book encyclopedia. I must admit that I do miss the interaction with the clients and that my graphic novel boutique was a sanctuary for one and all to discuss their favourite series or characters among each other. But what has cropped up in recent years is these self-perceived 'elitist' creators who mock and berate customers and now... comic book shop owners.
Were there some stereotypes of The Simpsons' 'Comic Book Guy' whose store looked and smelled unholy? Yeah, during the 80s and 90s but their stores did not last long after the speculator boom balloon of the 90s busted. If Glenn's store has been in operation for 30 years, he's doing something right but he needs new and good product (as in comic books) to offer the clientele for them to come back for more and expand his customer base. Something that DC and Marvel is not providing for the past decade for those who have invested in operating a brick & mortar store whether it's been 30 years or 30 months.
    Thank you for reading.

To me, I thought the truth is also used for empathy, and calm things down. I think telling the truth is sometimes I need to be honest, as attention. Not hurting anyone's feelings or else. I was never into political agendas. Since I'm apolitical and apathetic to fit into politics. I consider myself as a volunteer and cooperative person. I refuse to hate or lash out at any person, any being. That would be something I would be regretting in my life. I'm a snowflake, who is sensitive, emotional, and cannot argue against other peoples opinions. I am still a youngster in my heart and mindset to hate someone. The truth I believe, it was for ending this arguing, stop putting others be confused, scared, and bickering with one another. To make people look put their own differences aside. Cooperative, empathize, and be there for each other. Sometimes, I find telling the truth as no more argument, bickering with each other, and as a last defense to empathize, peace, and look out for each other. That's how I view telling the truth.

Wes. What we are looking at here is a twofold issue.
1)The current crop of "Writers" are from the "I want it NOWWWWW" generation. They neither have the patience or the inclination to go back and read decades of history of the characters they are assigned or hired on to write or draw. They do a quick search on their smart phone, get some half baked history which is probably full of errors or assumptions, and go from there.
2)They are ALSO from the generation that was told AD NAUSEAM how special and great they were. When you are repeatedly told this and are told you can do ANYTHING, there is one part of your psyche that is stunted. The part that allows you to DREAM. To believe you could be something better. To register that there may be people, or in this case CHARACTERS out there that are better than you. That achieved things you can only dream about.
Since that part is stunted, you now have a person snorting and saying "Huh. Build a suit of ARMOR? I could do that cuz Mom and Dad said I could..."
So you now have a combination of someone writing and drawing a character that 1)They have little knowledge of and 2)Even if they DID, they are convinced THEY are as special and great AS that character. So its not a huge leap for them to go "Well...guess what. Since am as special as are, I'll just give them(the readers) history." Hence...self insert.
...Do you see where all the vitriol and gnashing of teeth is coming from? How DARE we tell these people they are not as special or interesting as their PARENTS told them they were!! How dare we think Steve Rogers or Tony Stark or Hawkgirl or Superman are more interesting than THEM.
There are tons of jobs and careers that people will tell you OUTRIGHT are not for the "thin skinned"(meaning people easily offended). Obviously NOBODY told these people Comic Book writing and drawing is probably at or near the top of that list.
My parents NEVER told me EVERYTHING I did was great. They told me the truth based on the reality that PEOPLE HAVE OPINIONS that will differ from my own. Anything created as art is subjective. You leave yourself open to public opinion. I learned a long time ago that the best response to any criticism is "Thank You for your feedback" . Its then up to ME if I want to succeed to use that feedback or ignore it. Ranting and Raving at people opinions will NEVER get them to change those opinions. Its just a fact of life. Integrating constructive feedback and LEARNING and GROWING may do that.
Such is the danger of TELLING people in their formative years, they are ABOVE that fact. "Dont let anyone ever tell you, you can't do whatever you want! Your the best YOU there is!!"
.....ok....well in this case people are telling you WITH THEIR WALLETS, exactly that, that you cannot do whatever you want and succeed. If Marvel and DC want to go against that with THEIR wallets and pay these people...that's their right. But at some point the lack of money coming IN will pretty much mean there will be no money going OUT.
It can get costly propping up someones fantasy for awhile....ask Sancho Panza.
    ;)

Saw a tweet where Ron Marz was liking on this guy, saying that comics weren’t a restaurant where you can’t order what you want.
He forgets that if a chef takes a job at Outback Steakhouse, his job is to make a Bloomin’ Onion… not serve the customer who ordered it a Bloomin’ radish because the chef feels the customer should open their minds to more diverse foods. Btw… my fictitious customer (in this example) is allergic to radishes.

Nah people liked Miles. Especially when he was in the ultimate universe and in the Spider-Verse movies. Miles has only had a problem when he came into the main 616 universe. He’s not Riri Williams. He does have fans who enjoy him. Mikes biggest problem is once they took him out of his universe and stuck him in the main universe he was forever stuck in Peter Parker’s shadow.

When I was young,I found copies of the Phoenix saga in a long box that was in the back of a tobacco shop. And dude was right.I don’t read comics for self inserts. To be honest I’ve read comics since I could read. But it’s embarrassing what’s put out now. I’ve cancelled everything apart from Batman and world’s finest. I’m about to start chopping everything marvel. If you aren’t with the programme you’re a bigot. With the JLA vs Godzilla why is there a preview of Green lantern with Alan Scott rolling around with another man? If you buy comics that aren’t pushing “the message” it’s shoved in somewhere else to make sure it’s there. I see the same as Tom king books. Jesus Christ I don’t know what he did in the CIA but please stop pushing your traumas in these books like heroes in crisis. Enough.
I think based on this, the people pushing “the message” will attack you based on your looks. But then claim victim when it’s turned on them. What happened to this man was unfair.
    I’ve supported comic book stores and D.C./marvel but I’m almost gone and not coming back, no one wants this, the people these comics are aimed at aren’t magically buying these comics. The industry is dying and maybe it’s just time to let it go;

I’ve been watching Glen and Comic Book Palace for a few years now. Love Glen and his “tell it like it is” attitude. And what the hell is wrong with that. The last time I checked this is still America and we have the freedom and the ability to express an opinion whether or not you agree with it or not. Of course the Left thinks that’s sacrilege to think differently than they do. That Jamal character who was making ignorant assumptions is who and what is wrong with comics today and he’s the one who should get his thinking straight.

I wonder if Ninjak Superkillers, Eternal Warrior: Scorched Earth and Xo Manowar unconquered #4 would be good? In my opinion xo manowar unconquered is good but lacks something. #1 was good but Shanharra sort of out of character. #2 is to me is long and and #3 is better than #1 and 2. Ninjak ( 2021 ) wasn't bad but the art kept it down. ( except #4 because Beni Lobel was the co artist.) I hope Mike Norton and Jeff Parker will do good. Eternal Warrior: Scorched Earth has a great artist and I'm not sure about Tres Dean.

I especially love the fact he didn't even mention the terms woke and/or sjw. At least I dont recall him saying either of those terms. Main bullet point of what he said from how I see it is writers need to write better. Unfortunately, I believe that all of the lousy, weird, buttf○€ks, that have already infiltrated the market are just gonna continue to write shit! But, write runny shit even harder, faster and stronger, knowing how distasteful and depressing so many of us find it. Its like their way of suppressing their sad upbringings while simultaneously infuriating what they perceive to be their opposition.

When I volunteered with foster children, my girlfriend gave me the sideways compliment of asking if I believed superheroes are real. Of course I didn’t, but they did inspire me to actions helping others. If a superhero is out planting a tree (which a normie can do) instead of using their extraordinary powers to save lives… people die. Full stop. Let fictional superheroes inspire real world acts of service by being superheroes. Otherwise, you’re insulting your reader’s intelligence twice.
