Gene was so funny with the technical problems! I saw one episode where someone on the panel had their microphone lose a screw and Gene got a screwdriver and fixed it during the show! He was the best game show host ever.
Well he had the sensibility to realize that the show, even in the 70's as we have to think about the general mentality of those days, was not a methodical brick-by-brick and strictly organized appearance as many other shows were and still are. He seen the humour and the farces of the whole thing and his natural, cool, calm and suave activity enabled him to get everyone to carry on as regular people and it makes great television. You can embarrass yourself here and not feel bad
Thanks for the upload - have been waiting for this whole episode for a long time! Bet the techs in Studio 33 had one hellva time bugging Gene with the microphone that day!
I've really been enjoying these old shows. I liked Gene Rayburn as a teen, but now, at 64, I can see more clearly that he was really quite the talented performer.
They were always having trouble with that game selector prop.. It was always either getting stuck or doing what it did in this episode.. It messed up a few other times in a few other episodes..
Interesting factoid, the "Governor" that they mention for the Prisoner question who isn't married back in 1975, is the same Governor of California now. Jerry Brown was governor from 1975-1983 and has been governor again since 2011. :)
Unfortunately the Tax Man has his eye on quite a few of those dimes. Don't know about those days but now you have to pay the taxes before they even leave the taping (assuming they win anything).
Phil Adams The IRS did back then too. Most people never even kept their prizes from "The Price Is Right" because they couldn't afford to pay the taxes on them. Just like today.
I'm always amazed and saddened to see how people in those years couldn't even manage to down their cigarettes long enough to do a television show. Times have changed....and much for the better in that regard. But the great old TV shows are gone too.
Agree on the cigarettes, disagree on times being better. Political correctness has ruined this country. People said what they felt back then, and if it offended others...they got the fuck over it. People are weak as hell these days. Always whining about something offending them. Life is hard. Deal with it. They did back then, and managed to have plenty of good times. We are also a lot dumber these days as well...thanks "smart devices". This show was way before my time, but I like old school everything, movies, music, guitars, music gear, cars etc. Because they just don't make them like that anymore, I will take the 60's-70's over the 2000's any day everyday and 6 times on Sunday.
The UK version of this show was called Blankety Blank. The funniest episodes are the ones presented by Terry Wogan & Les Dawson. The more recent version with Lilly Savage (drag act) is nowhere near as good although Lilly Savage is good in many other appearances.

Super Match, part 1: NO RETURN Part 2: KING Schlicker-Huntley, round 1, question A: "GOVERNOR for my money." (Bzzt!) Question B: (Lugosi accent) "In a drafty old castle like this, it's so important that one's coffin have CENTRAL HEATING!" (Bzzt!) Round 2, question A: "It wasn't very enlightened of him, but yes, PUNCHED." (Ding!) Question B: "Next up on Ed Sullivan, a man with hot coals in his NOSE!" (Bzzt!)
Why didn't Gene just take out the B card, after the girl picked A since that was the only card left in round 1. That way the contestant doesnt have to hold onto the broken piece 🤔🤨🙄
You know, I watched quite afew shows with Scoey on them. And their right, I think he's only gotten the right answer about twice now. I guess it would help if he wasn't so blocked up during the whole week. But at the same time, I realize that the other stars are too along with Gene....especially Brett. But I guess Her & Charles have had a whole season to get used to it. And what about Patti Deutsch's answers? She doesn't do any better as far as getting the right one either.
I keep thinking of answers that would annoy the censors back then. ...or might be borderline. Besides the assumed 7 forbidden words, are they told additional words that can't be mentioned? ...or am I just sick and twisted?
Slade Simon Watch the documentary show "Behind the Blank" and you'll find out about the other ones, lots of them. Someone actually had a job that was to tell the contestants what they couldn't say, lol.
I am surprised they did not reshoot the opening. Cameramen were unprepared. Although I shouldn't be . i attended a taping of the price is right years ago and one of the models was to pull a sheet off of a new car but it got caught on the fender and she had to pull and pull. I asked Bob Barker if they will re film that segment. he said, ''we are going to leave it just the way it is'' BTW They dont treat their audiences very well. They keep you waiting many hours before they let you into the studio for taping. We had to be there at 7AM and they did not tape until 2pm . Never again.
Some shows kind of thrive on mistakes and this was one of them. Some of them were probably on purpose. Or, at least, they knew a smooth running operation was counter to the mission.
Joe Postove I actually noticed Fannie Flagg getting caught with smoke in her mouth (didn’t see her take a drag). I think it was from Richard’s cigarette as he smokes on stage infrequently.
I love this great show and laugh at it a lot. But the more I see it, the more I think that Gene's cutesy banter with the stars (particularly Brett) needed to be dialed back just a little in favor of actually playing the game. I particularly dislike the answers that are obviously intended to be funny and far out, but which could never be a match. The guy who always got it just right was Richard Dawson. He was funny and entertaining, but he played the game too. Apart from the regulars, the cutesy bits the stars do before revealing their answers are often more annoying than funny.
The "cutesy banter" was what made the show popular to this day. I honestly don't know what everyone sees in Richard. Most of the time he acted like he was above everyone else and by the time he left to do Family Feud, he was a just a flat-out jerk. The only people he cared about were the ingenues sitting to his right.
AlmostWorthless Richard was the best because he did care for contestants, both here and on FF. People always picked him because he had good ESP with the contestants. He was flirty but he always wanted fairness. Sure he had arguments with producers but many times it was because he didnt want contestants getting screwed which did happen on many occasions on both shows (look up Match Game School Riot). As far as him being a jerk, watch his farewell speech on Family Feud.
Does anyone know what was the most won or the longest reigning champion? The prizes by today's standards are not very impressive, but as a 70s child I remember my mom winning a $200 X Mas raffle, and it buying ALOT of luxuries that we never could have afforded on her salary.
AD77 did you pick up at all how uncomfortable one person in particular seemed to feel that entire episode? and with pretty good reason? this was simply hard to watch.
@@Rhythmic22 It's fraught, though, to watch stuff through a modern lens and make those conclusions. Whether Scoey was really ticked off or if it was his comedic approach. Or both! I just know that if I was making a TV show today, I'd be making it for 2019 and not 2060.
Scoey sure looked good in yellow!! Really a fun episode!! Patti Duke resembled Fannie here, her hair and outfit!
Scoey looked good in anything! he was so handsome! 😁 And so was his wife Claire they made a pretty couple. R.I.P Scoey 😞
Yep
The biggest technical glitch was that Patti Deutsch matched twice!!
This is a very popular Match Game episode. Hope you enjoy!!
good episode
Excellent episode indeed
Gene was so funny with the technical problems! I saw one episode where someone on the panel had their microphone lose a screw and Gene got a screwdriver and fixed it during the show! He was the best game show host ever.

RIP Patty Duke Astin
I love scoey Mitchell where is he these days he was such a handsome guy
He passed away in 2022
@MamaDeb62 he was really good I loved Barefoot in the Park only one season it was ahead of its time
Lmao they should've gave John a few extra dollars for putting him to work holding the thing up.
Scoey was the best! Love this guy.
Gene Rayburn was a sharp-dressed man. Everything a game show host should be.
Love that Patty Duke is on. Love her.
Pleasant memories of a happy time.
In the introduction, those other stars stole Richard Dawson's "cover the face" thing.
He was. He could be animated and imitated characters very well. He was a perfect fir for the show. He certainly was not wooden.
Admired by all
They were always having trouble with that game selector prop.. It was always either getting stuck or doing what it did in this episode.. It messed up a few other times in a few other episodes..
Gene whacked the buttons so hard, no wonder.
Johnny Olson -- "RIGHT ON " !!!! :)
LOL, Richard didn't appear at all in the intro. I bet he was pissed off when he saw that!
+Gina Weaver nawwww! lol
neither did Charles, Scoey appeared twice.
+Mike Peterson Actually, they did show Charles when Johnny said Richard Dawson.
Weird.
The part with Gene's microphone was just hilarious!

I JUST ❤ THIS SHOW 😍
Man, Patti Duke was a hottie back in the day.
Wren Wright Patti was. And an adorable child star.
always thought she was gorgeous
that's for sure......she was also a close friend of Sharon Tate.
I met Patty twice and she was such a doll both times
Love Scoey.....funny
BOBBI RAVEN Same.
Match Game was the best.
The prefix of trumploid apparently means *fool* in French. Makes sense to me.
If this episode of Match Game.
Was in the 1980s.
I say " Donkey Kong "

Patty Duke was quite the hottie in her day.
My, how Charles and Richard have changed! LOL.
Scoey had a real attitude going on. If that's supposed to be his schtick, sorry, it doesn't work.
sometimes it's alright - other times it just annoys me - jmho
"...I tell you, it's got everything - even BLANK!" 😛
"Blaaaaank!" (echo) LOL!
Skoey was right when he said count how many Patty gets right. We all know she intentionally gives screwy answers.
That's why Gene said they can't count her wrong answers.
The technical problems were perfect 😂
My God,that had to be the easiest Super Match win ever.
John W Landry The easiest one I’ve ever seen was with Fannie
Flagg and it was BLANK Newman.
The most obvious one I saw was Tinker BLANK. I mean, what other tinker could it be than Tinkerbell?
@@accam6734 Alfred E or Paul or Phyllis?

New found respect for Gene after watching Charles host(he was brilliant)btw

She sucked
Ugh
My coffin had everything, including high speed internet.
Lol
Just saw this one on TV today!
This castle is haunted!
(Someone had to say it. :) )
SCOEY MITCHELL has outlived them all AND he was a smoker back in the day.
Plus, the audience (and me) thought "point of view" was the best answer.
PlanetRockJesus
Not me, I didn't think of that. "Point of no return" was the first thing that popped into my mind, lol. Cheers!
7:08 TIME TO PANIC!
Lmao at the panel accident
Boy, CNR and Dawson looked so different in the intros. I never would have recognized them.

6:00 and a children's naughty rhyme is born. Is that a doorbell I hear?
the dracula thing was just annoying. BLAAAAANK. ONCE IS ENOUGH, maybe twice
They tend to overdo on this show sometimes
Patti never cared about matching the contestant- she was a wacko
At 6:14 they show a woman in the audience who won on several earlier episodes, named Susan. Look at episodes 419 and 420.
John’s wife?
Contestant John was a very handsome guy! 😍
The jokes about beating a wife is just amazing. How times have changed.

this was on gsn yesterday morning! it was hilarious
