I'm not surprised. If I were Barbara I wouldn't go back, Gene was quite rude. Also, they wanted to have different stars to promote the shows. I don't recall anyone on from The Jeffersons. I must get an episode guide
Joe Ambrose Both Isabel Sanford and Mike Evans were panelists on Match Game during The Jeffersons run. It seems that Isabel was on two different weeks in '75 and Mike Evans made only a week of appearances in '75.
There are comments saying Alex looked bored, and maybe he was, but he was definitely trying to play well. He'd made improvement over the games, but I say that early in this game, he had caught on at least temporarily. :D
End-of-week H/H match recap: ... A resoundingly lousy H/H match week. There were only 3 H/H matches all week (very unusual to have fewer than 4), and only 1 was successful: Richard 1/2, Brett 0/1 (No H/H match on Monday as time ran out before they could complete a game, and then on Friday the contestant struck out with the audience match board.) Today's recap: Our returning champion is the only winning MG contestant in the past 575 shows to meet Gene for the super match by walking around the revolving contestant podium from her right. She did it yesterday and again today, and when Gene mentioned it, I wondered why they just didn't tell her off-camera before the start of the show. Anyway, yesterday our "professional lady wrestler" (her words) chose Richard (and won big). Today for the audience match she tries to choose "The scarlet fever" (a joke answer Brett tossed out before giving her equally lame #3 pick "scarlet lady"). Gene pointed out that the question had a "the" in it, and so scarlet fever wasn't a very good response, and so he allowed (and encouraged) her to change her answer. Unfortunately, she opted for "scarlet lady" to general groans. Even Brett knew it wouldn't be up there - she'd just tossed out a silly #3 answer because the only two good answers (Letter and Pimpernel) had already been taken. Oh well, she gets to play another game... ...And so an interesting and high-antics week ends (the lighting problems, the seat-changing, the impromptu wrestling match), and with it ends the (brief) Match Game careers of both Alex Karras and Barbara McNair. It was unfortunate that they were both introduced on the same week - the panel could have more easily absorbed them one at a time, together it was a bit much. Alex didn't seem like a great fit for the show, but he did show some potential (his "jock" answer today was a classic, but I'm not sure what to make of his "young boy" answer at the end of the show, so I'll just do what Gene did and ignore it). I have to say I enjoyed his low-key attitude as a change of pace from the high-octane personalities of Orson or McLean for example (both of whom I love as panelists, but it's also nice to have some low-key once in a while). Barbara had some difficulty coming up with answers on occasion, and Gene's nagging didn't help any. Still, she was gracious and contributed a few good responses and matched a couple of times. Both could potentially have developed into solid guest panelists, but alas, it was not to be... Looking ahead, it's all veterans again next week: -Our 3 regulars are joined by sixth-seat semi-regular Patti Deutsch. She's 1 for 2 in H/H matches so far. -Scoey Mitchell is back for his fifth week (out of 12 total). Maybe some sports injury he'd gotten was hurting. Leaning on your arm(s) takes pressure off your spine and hips. He was in a lawsuit later on regarding concussions and head injuries, so an aching neck and/or head are quite possible.
It definitely gives some people zits. I read that (some of) that research was sponsored by Hershey's, I think, or some other chocolate manufacturer. A whole article about that and a lot of similar 'research' that invariably favors the special interests paying for it (if it doesn't favor them, they don't publish it).
Well they didn't have him back. This was also the only week with Barbara McNair, and it's a shame they never invited her back because she fit in well with the others, much better than Alex Karras did.
