  • Here at JoBlo, we love the 80s, but we'll admit that not every movie made over the course of that decade was a winner. In this Awfully Good Compilation, we dig into three huge flops that are still a lot of fun all these years later.
Staying Alive: The Sylvester Stallone-directed sequel to Saturday Night Fever was the toast of the Razzies in 1983 and helped sink John Travolta's career for a good decade.
Supergirl: The Salkinds failed to launch a franchise with this Superman spinoff, whose star, Helen Slater, found her charming performance overlooked by many critics.
Masters of the Universe: The He-Man adaptation helped sink Cannon Films and almost cratered Dolph Lundgren's career as a leading man.

On a financial side, Staying Alive was certainly not a flop

Yes that’s true. Of all the movies on the list it actually did the best financially, but critics and audiences hated it at the time.

At least the actors back then gave their characters some charisma, even with a bad script and low budget. Rather rewatch those than the 200-300million superhero movies they do nowadays.

I liked a huge amount of flops released in 1980's. Everything from "Cobra, They Live, , Batteries not Included, Cocoon "to Masters of the Universe". I also like a lot B-Movies from back then.

Jesse is hands down the best narrator for JoBlo. Fun, engaging, witty and yet knowledgeable. Also his quips & one liners are pure gold. Please make Jesse the full time narrator. Some of the narrator’s are so boring I put them on the speaker at home to lull me to sleep.

That "rape" scene in Supergirl actually begins with the two guys arriving in a semi and blowing their air horn, and not even because she's in their way. They just pull into that parking lot and announce their presence.

All three movies are great in their own cheesiness and I actually prefer Staying Alive over Saturday Night Fever I think because I was born in 1976 and not old enough to watch the original that's why I prefer the over the top 1980's pop songs and John Travolta looking as buff as he never will be, for a few years I never knew it was a sequel as the tones of both films are vastly different.

To be fair to masters of the universe, considering all the behind the scenes issues and bad writers and not having enough money, the movie wasn't that bad . The graphic for the laser blasts and lightning effects looked better then some of the stuff we got from the cw superhero shows. I think they did a good job.. definitely passable when I was a kid

It so strange to hear about bad vfx in Masters of the universe. It actualy well made. Fly8ng scenes in here more complicated to make then in the BTF, and they make a good job. Just remember how bad somerimes was vfx in first Ghosbusters, or in Flash Gordon. A dont know... its all just 80s.

Well it would be very easy for Ex-5-ables to become a box office success, just spend under 10 million dollars making it and rely on the fact that movie tickets will be $100 each to unnaturally inflate the box office receipt. It makes no sense why they base it on dollars made when it should be based on total tickets sold.

Rotten Tomatoes doesn't work on old movies that were out long before they were. You have modern idiots critiquing entertainment made decades ago through a contemporary lense. Aka the reviews for movies that predate their company are irrelevant.
