Installing the Refleks diesel stove on our narrowboat (HOW TO)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лют 2020
- We install the Refleks diesel heater on our narrowboat in this episode. The day has finally arrived and Paul from Lockgate has all the tools and know how to get the job done. We had expected the installation to take a day, but the conditions were less than ideal and the job took a second day. We made sure all the cupboards were empty incase we needed access to the copper pipe that would carry the diesel. We also checked the location of our wires so that we wouldn't drill through our electrics when making the chimney hole.
Let us know if you would like to know more about our consumption of diesel compared to our coal and we will make another vlog about it.
Here's a link to Paul's website, make sure you tell him we sent you and say 'hi' from us.

He did a great job of installing the stove and it looks really smart
Thanks we love it
Good to see you're all nice and toastie in this horrible weather. Hopefully the weather will improve soon and we can see a bit more cruising and through the hedge adventuring.
Alice's meerkat impression at 2:12 whilst Munchie pretends to be a squirrel!
Munchy and Alice did an excellent job supervising the insulation of beautiful Mable. With their keen eye to detail they carefully inspected the emptied cabinets, thoroughly checked over every tool and equipment entering Lazy Days, closely monitored each step of the installation, finally finishing their job as everything was cleaned and sorted out in their living space. I’ll suer their favorite job was determining the very best spot to bask in her radiant heat.
Their shelf up high is two degrees hotter than anywhere on the boat. I'm so happy about that, and happy that the sofa is not the hottest spot on the boat lol
Interesting vlog, it is pleasing to see a tradesman that goes the extra mile, I love how you call vacuming Hovering, it makes me think of all the British shows I watch.
The excitement in Cath's voice at the start of the video made my day. Thank you ladies.
Wow, what a cold and rainy pattern UK has experienced all while trying to be cozy. I hope rain and flooding have not been in your path and I wish you much comfort. Glad to see you. Your heating unit is lovely. Hope Spring is on the wsy.
When you said it was a Refleks stove, I thought you might name it Duran. And now through my own fault, I cannot get that tune out of my head! Ahh!
They could have called it Mads, the other famous Refleks lives on a boat called Obilex over at Sail Life. ;-)
Great video - we had a 60ft trawler with a bigger version of this stove for 18 years and it never missed a beat (got regular service). All the other local boats had coal and were so jealous of our stove - the timbers were always warm and bone dry. Excellent choice (summer all year round lol). 😊
That brought back memories of the lighting process when I used a similar stove on my share boat . Ours look liked the old multi fuel stove . The explanation was as clear as mud but I eventually got the hang of it. It certainly gave off great heat. Looks lovely . Enjoy your cosy heater xxxx
BRILLIANT! The best is the kitty cat 'escape pole' to the top shelf, all happiness in your snug nest.
They love that scratch post.
Hi, ladies, thanks for another episode. Much fun following your adventures, looking forward to the next Through the Hedge.
Looks wonderful! So glad you are both warm now. X
I love those tiles. The whole fireplace looks so nice.
Love the new heater and love you 2 ladies and enjoying your journeys, does make my weeks seeing you 2 + cats lol ! all the best and looking forward to more adventures!
Brilliant - thank you - have been eagerly anticipating this installation and so pleased to see it's the Refleks heater. Good luck - hope your pleasure continues. May I suggest that the good, old fashioned 'turkey baster' will help with the initial meths squirt. Measure the amount needed (as recommended) mark the baster tube and from there on it's a much easier and cleaner method for you.
Glad you liked it
Looks good and keeps you both warm
Looks beautiful...great job...I hope you have many warm cozy days and nights of enjoyment and use ...I am sure you will...thanks for sharing
Well done girls, looks good, hope it keeps you warm all winter.
Mabel the diesel heater sits proudly on her hearth,
shiny, warm and slender, it is the winter beater,
Crunchie and Witches Familiar lay happily at the berth,
cosy, warm and contented and connected with their earth.
And when the married duo, require some extra heat,
they turn up Mabels dials, and toast their little feet.
Hear endeth this little ditty, to mark the stove install,
and wish them happy days ahead, and to say, that's all !!! 😂👍
Love it
Great vlog ladies. Heater looks great.
Glad y’all all warm now.
Wow! That stove looks terrific with the tile. Really enjoyed the install vid.
I have the same heater. The only thing I have done is to remove the top round thing so I can cook with bigger pans. Otherwise great heater. I’m on a boat in The Netherlands.
There seems to be a lip around the hot plate that prevents bigger pans too.
A tip, when drilling a hole above you put a plastic tub on the drill bit to catch the debris!
Hey, that is something which could be useful at times at model train club!
Another very interesting vlog. Hope the new stove keeps you warm and toasty, thank you.
Very nice work, neat and clean, I'm happy for you two and your lovely cats, you made a smart choice
It’s so clean! No ash or dust everywhere. No messy box of wood and fire lighters and everything else. I may have been converted.
It is lovely
Got love watching things being built...
That stove looks really smart, well done ladies. Great vlog.
lovely video, feeling the warmth of you both and the stove.x
Beautiful slick job done, good looking wee stove/heater
Oh, congratulations it looks beautiful. You have done an amazing job.
It looks very smart and I'm glad you're pleased with it. Maybe good timing with changes to wood and coal burning just announced. Have to say the shape reminds me of the Aladdin Paraffin heater we had at home back in the 50's. Keep it shiny!
Ooh ooh! Fancy! Those stoves look AWESOME!
Good job ladies with thanks to Paul. Now that that’s finally done, it’s on to the next project!
Which should be what??
Just want to say congratulation on a job well done and seems safe.
Girls, you ROCK! Thank you Ladies and yes please - consumption review vlog later on :) Seriously, thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us .... this is so helpful xx
Thank you, it did take us a while to compile this episode and it's so nice for you to say thanks. x
If you are warm and happy, then I am happy for you with the new stove. However, I should point out that you will miss the cleaning of the coal stove glass, and the exercise of carrying the heavy bags of coal down muddy towpaths, and the thrill of having black fingers and much of the mess of ashes. If you can live without all that, then you did alright.
lol. We’ll try.
Well done ladies, impressive
Great to see the heater in and working. Also good to see you both well again with or without knickers " the cheeky devel" LOL
that would keep the boat nice and warm in the winter
Good info and great looking heater 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Top job......looking the part on your boat.......thanks for sharing
I love that stove I’ve been contemplating getting one myself
Congratulations ladies!! Hope you are nice and toasty and thoroughly enjoy your stove. Cheers 😎👍🇨🇦
I hope you are staying safe from all the flooding over there!
Our part hasn't flooded thank you.
nice 😊 great installation! looks so nice 😊
We really love it
Looks like a great heating source to me, efficient and super-clean. Love your hearth it’s a real style statement xx
Thank you we love it too
The stern doors! Nice!
Brilliant job
That is one beautiful fireplace, and looks particularly stunning next to your fancy tile work.
thank you, we think so too. We are really quite surprised how it all came together so well. Or so we think lol
The polished finish on that heater gives it a clean, modern look. I think the shiny, bright surface blends well with your environment. And now the cute little cats can see the reflection of themselves as they walk pass and see how cool they look... 😉
I agree
Well done Guys!
Looks super cosy
I’m sure the cats will need their beds near the stove soon ❤️
Hi ladies, nice to see another vlog from you both.
I gave up liveaboard life style a massive heart wrench !
Back tomorrow if money no object and can design my own boat.
One of many issues to deal with is your heating.
And for the reasons you gave up your multi fuel stove for this new diesel heater I can relate to them.
25kg coal bags, dust and mess are tough to deal with on a daily basis.
Your choice of workman was exceptional and correct.
Perfection costs time.
Most fitters at the end rush the job and ruin it.
It was correct to take a second day to do it right.
Your careful planning and research paid hugh dividends to you both Well Done 🙂.
Keep safe and dry.
That's very true. Paul seems to be a measure three times cut once kind of guy and we really respected that about him.
As for the coal- some of it had to do with the size - and most of it was the dust and mess.
That looks well smart especially with the tiles and I know they get proper toastie.. well done
Looks great. Our multi burner has a back boiler feeding radiators so diesel stove will have to wait for next boat.😁
Two Vixens, two cats, one Mabel, lazy days......Arrrrhhhhh! Top vid girls. Yep, a breakdown of comparison costs to run would be a great help. My days of lumping around 25kg bags and cleaning up coal dust are deffo getting shorter. Keep well, I know you'll keep warm, Mabel will see to that, keep vlogging xx
to be honest Steve, I was thinking about you with the stove. You would love it. You can position a fan to assist with the convection and use a very little amount of diesel. It's awesome.
It’s very early over here and I been working all night but, a log fire sounds a lot easier to light than what Paul was explaining!!!!! Love the vids and live the new fireplace
Yes, we'll go through it again. Meths, match, 3 mins, turn it on push the button. Simple.
we have that heater and it is wonderful boils the kettle nice and quick
Thanks guys that looks really smart you have worked hard getting that done, I wish I had room for one, bet that's nice n cosy now. Paul was... Very nice! I guess that wasn't a cheap excercise but no more lugging heavy bags of coal around for you two. Take care. Alan.
You can get a different size- much much smaller.
Mabel looks great on you Two! Looks like that corner tile setup was made for her. 🤣 Simple setup considering and The Dude gave easily understood explanations w hands on demo. Very Nice. 👍👏🏻😃👏🏻
We were so happy with the end look too.
Very smart indeed... will be interested in consumption...
Mabel looks brilliant and I bet the cats enjoy the warmth as well as you or maybe more as they tussle for the best position take care all of you see you next week love from r and b
Yes definitely.
Looks smart, great video 👍
Thanks x
Love them tiles
Me too. Love the fact that you've called your stove Mabel as well.
Mabel is beautiful. Well done on such a successful installation.
Thank you.
The Narrowboat Experience How effective is the stove top for cooking / making coffee?
Looks great think you have done a great job 👍
Thanks
Job well done!
Hi girls! Been waiting for this vlog. So glad you got your stove from Lockgate, they’re BRILLIANT! That’s why they’re so busy!
Paul managed to fit refurbishing our oil regulator in around fitting your, and other stoves! That’s the only thing I’ve had to do to it in 12 years! And probably wouldn’t have needed that if I’d changed the filter regularly!😏
Happy zero electricity heating, with the news about banning certain types of fuel, I bet your glad you went for oil! Now get you Ecofan.
We are very happy with Refleks and with the installation that Lockgate did. We will say that Paul is very busy to book way in advance.
Wonderful stuff!
Yes - please - a full breakdown (and why you selected this particular stove - would be much appreciated!
A charming little fire...
looks great
Enjoyed this one, well I’ve been waiting a while....only joking...many thanks for your excellent video. Hope it’s keeping you all nice and warm.
Imagine how long we waited. And in the cold. lol.
Fantastic video
Paul from Lockgate installed our Reflek heater a couple of years ago. We use the fuel tank for the engine, not an additional one thus we use red diesel but otherwise ours is exactly the same as yours. The hotplate is very useful, when not used for cooking it is ideal for the fan, spreading the heat further.
well I love it, looks fab ladies, and thanks for sharing, I have still to choose what we will buy to heat our new boat, I was thinking of getting a back boiler attached ,but I am not sure that's the best way to go as it would require it to run in summer when we are not moving ,so probably going to go the webasto or similar to heat water and rads,as well as heat of the engine for water and oil fired stove as heat source only .thanks again for sharing .xx alex
Lots of choices there.
Looks great but I was really impressed with your cat shelf design. Whose idea was that?
We both came up with it. I (Annamarie) wanted a cat run around the whole boat, so this is where we settled.
No more ash dust all over the boat! If I ever were to move aboard a boat, I'd definately look into these diesel fired units. It looks nice too.
Looks very futuristic!! Love the chimney cover, very Terminator!
I'll be back...... 👍😉❤
A great vlog , well explained , 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
That’ll keep you cozy.
Clean and no more bags of coal on the roof. Only down side another filter for Kath to change at sometime. Looks good.
That's what I said. But, I don't think it needs changing, just cleaning if there is an issue.
Great video
I could use that stove right now. It is going down into the 40s tonight, but was mid 70s today. No narrow boats in Florida though.
That was an great video must be nice and warm on the boat now for you all
yes, it is lovely
Love Mabel ❤️
She will keep you Guys warm
Great clip ladies. It looks like not only did you get a great stove but the installation was dune top notch. Paul is a true professional clean (he took his shoes off inside), tidy (vacuumed up) and knowledge about the stove. I am sure you have already done it but, don't forget to link to his company. Good work can never get too much credit. I hope some day you visit our area. Burscough on the Leeds & Liverpool.
The links are in the description
Brilliant decision
Wonderful. Nice. It looks so good.
I really think I can install one in my tiny house.💗
Hi, great video, thanks. I'd love to hear how it compares to what you had before, running cost, heat output, ease of use etc.
Looks nice and clean. With that simple set up, it should last for many years of nice heat.
It’s brilliant. Love it.
The reflex looks great we had one on our last boat for 20 years as residential use after 10 years or so the burner grid that goes down the middle needed replacing at a cost of about £35.oo and never let us down. Occasionally high winds blew it out. Our present boat as diesel central heating nowhere as good.
We find the diesel central heating is a wet heat and the Refleks is a nice dry heat. And yes we love her too.
looks like a pro job
Thanks for sharing insulation.
I enjoy your videos and am so glad I do not need a heater in Bahamas.
Love the new stove. Perhaps you can go through he lighting process again sometime now that it is broken in. 👍✌️😊🙏🏼
Definitely
Mabel is gorgeous! That was so interesting and informative- thank you x
So glad you liked it. We are very proud of our little Mabel and how well she is handling winter. Even if it is the end of winter.
neat set up
Thanks
That was really good never seen a diesel heater before and did learn something new this morning.
An update would be good and how it performs if we get any colder days this year?
You always produce very watchable and engaging videos so thank you both.
Thank you
