LIGHT a Refleks Diesel Stove on your narrowboat (and other HOT tips)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 бер 2020
- After installing our Refleks Diesel Stove on our narrowboat we received some questions about how to light the stove. Is it hard? There is a lot of misconception online about how 'tricky' these stoves are to light. So we are sharing our FIRST ever attempt at lighting Maybel.
While we are at it we thought we'd answer some of your questions about the chimney, blow back and ventilation.

"Stay serious" lol - that's too adorable. Thank you for another fab video. 🥰
I think that was my favorite part of the video.
I get in so much trouble because of silliness. And finally you 've all seen how hard done by I am now. lol
Any heater that vents out of the boat will produce a "dry heat" its gas hobs and the like that produce water in the air that can ad to condensation, along with cooking of course. Some kind of heat exchange ventilation could allow you to move more air, not lose heat and reduce condensation.
We would like to thank you two and all the other narrowboat vloggers that we watch for helping us stay sane over the last twelve months. We were unable to travel to the UK in 2019 due to family issues but next Sunday we are heading your way. Hopefully we will see you on the cut.
Glas we could help and hope you enjoy your trip next Sunday
Home is where the “hearth” is!
Hi. We had a lockgate diesel stove fitted to our then new boat in 2001. I agree with all you said. Very informative video covering all the questions we once asked but had to find answers to ourselves. Keep up the good work ladies and stay safe.
Glad you answered about the chimney height. Enjoy the warmth!👍✌️😊🙏🏼
I like this idea for heating..no mess or dust with having to take out the ashes...so clean and easy to use....definitely the way to go....
Thank you for taking the time to explain all about your stove. It is so tempting to replace the Morso with one. It is definitely going to be done in the future, we're not getting any younger.
Well explained.....glad you are enjoying your new diesel heater.......thanks for sharing
Thanks, glad you thought so
Super review. Thank you.
Your tile backsplash behind the stove is very pretty. Glad you were warm and comfy during the winter.❤️⛴️
You answered all my questions. Thank you. I happy all of you are warm and safe. We have been getting the aftermath of your storms all the way over here in Grafenwöhr. A lot of trees down, small hail, a little snow. Stay safe, hugs to all.
We have had those three storms in a row. But we are doing quite well anyway thank you
Thank you. I have been worried about all of you and my Auntie, cousins in Stourport-on- Severn. Give us a shout if you need anything. If I can help, I will.
Thank you.
Love you both 🙂. I've had a diesel stove for a while, and yes, it's a great dry heat and much much cleaner onboard than coal. We need proof however that the cats approve . Rob
Oh yes we didn't even mention how clean it is without ash, thanks for mentioning that
I have friends in Valdez that have a great, great grand daddy of that stove in their home by the ocean. 20 years or so old. They keep a bucket of water on it so there’s always hot water for dishes. just thought about it. Their home and my home probably don’t have much more Square feet of floor space than your Narrow boat. It is nice to be warm.
Bottom line, you’re warm, the cats are warm and you’re not hauling bags of coal. A definite win-win-win !
agreed
Glad your keeping warm and dry, good to know the heater is working as you hoped.
Neat installation, well done.
Great vid, we recently bought our boat and it comes with a Kabola diesel stove. We've watched all your videos on your Refleks stove and whilst there are some differences between it and our Kabola it has helped us a lot. Got it working this morning and so far so good :)
also lovely when cruising on cold days
Great job as usual. Spring is not far off.
Very informative. Thank You
Looks great.
Hi girls love the vlog.We have had a diesel stove on our narrow boat for over 20 years now and can’t fault it it’s brilliant on every level. One thing to say is obviously meths is extremely flammable, you can only use it when the stove is stone cold or vaporises and will ignite instantly, taking your eye brows off as i can confirm. I found a small piece of fire lighter , lit and dropped in is far safer.Got rid of need for hair removing meths!!
Very well done ladies it's nice when your serious with a few hints of fun
Glad you liked it
Thank you
Haven't watched the two of you in a while. Life gets in the way sometimes. You look wonderful as usual. Interesting video, I enjoyed it, thanks.
Great vlog, answered my questions 😊
Wonderful!!
When I lived on my boat with the same brand of stove I was shown how to light it with small bbq style firefighters. Not on the boat anymore but I recall dropping in the firefighter and then throwing in a couple of 🔥 matches. Personally I don’t like the smell of meths or the fact that it produces an invisible flame when burning. Your videos are making me want to move back to boat life! Have a good day 🌈
aircrash tupolov OOPS!! Well spotted 😊
Very interesting, well done.
me & my wife been enjoying your videos, y'all are a riot, love it, anyway let me see if I can give you idea to extract more heat, first I would use a few more fans, I get 10-12 hours out of my battery pack to run 1 USB fan. I would try 2-3 in your primary area, with 1-2 more to push it farther away. towards bedroom.
now for the diesel heater, dont do this without securing it while moving, however should be ok while stationary, this will sound weird, but very effective, the metal wood stove pipe. 6" that come off back of wood heaters, or stoves, get 3-4 sections, but do not lock them together, just stack 1 over the other, staggering the open section on each one, now, use pieces of "bailing wire" or coat hanger, to tighten the pipes loosely together, so they can be lifted off & on, now place it on top of heater, you may need a metal pie pan? then on top I place a pie pan on the top, the heat builds up & the pipes radiate a lot more heat, plus a fan helps heat my whole house, I use a portable kerosene heater, I tried this over a decade ago, & worked on it & yes it heats my whole house, provided I leave doors open, the bathroom or bedroom will cool off if close the door, but I do have electric heaters to use if needed, but that will work well, & all I do is move air from room to room with fans.
Another informative vlog ladies 👍🏻
Glad its keeping you and the cats warm I bet they are enjoying it c u next week take care
thanks, see you Sunday
I love to watch all your videos
Good job..... Its amazing just how many experts are around just when you need them lol. It looks like you have done the best thing that suits your needs, good move. Thank you for sharing.
Well we have had a multi fuel stove, only central heating (Eberspacher and Webasto) and now a diesel heater. It's better to hear from people who are doing it than just people trying to fill air with what they think they know second hand.
So glad you like your Reflex stove, we love our diesel Lockgate/Squirrel!
Have years of happy warm cruising girls.👍😁
oh excellent. What an great little gang we are.
I always click “like” at the beginning. I know I’m going to like seeing you two again, feels like you’re family!
So kind thanks
I.v got the smallest heater refleks diesel do (66mk) with cooking plate. It was a replacement for a larger model on my 12m fishing boat I work on out of Newlyn in cornwall.I had the top guard ring alterd to take a large kettle snugly,it will easily get hot enough to fry on if you want! when it comes to lighting i just turn on fuel wait till i can see it seep into the burner pot, light the chunk of fire lighter I,ve speared with a length of wire and gently insert chunk into the bottom of the burner and replace top.I have never used meths, I dont carry it, the fire lighter method works very well and completely burns away.It never smells of Diesel unless its gone out (usually due to poor weather and time to go in!!!) I leave it on all winter to keep electronics n bunks dry one word BLISS! I am a big fan especially when your sailing in the early hours, you open the wheelhouse door and its toasty.....the flue runs up the corner of the wheelhouse from the cabin below and its lovely to rest your back against it! It aint called cozy corner for nothing!!!!lol. i highly recomend them the previous one lasted 30 years, testament enough i would say
Powerful recommendation
many advantages, constant heat, no dust, easy to use
Very informative lady’s,thank you. Happy sailing
Well done to you both. Very informative video. The level heat from your new fire seems to agree with you.
It's nice to know you will both be warm what ever the weather. H
Oh yes, we love the stove, it has even made me look forward to next winter!!!!
Love the video
Great video and very informative.
Pleased that you can cook on the new fire and thanks for showing the chimney on the outside / roof of the boat.
It is good that the chimey can be made to a smaller size, if need be.
I prefer the diesel heater to a multifuel stove as the diesel heater is alot cleaner, no need to clean out the stove after use, to remove all of the burn't ash and no need to have the hassle of getting and storing logs and coal.
Valuable information. Thank you so much.
Glad you found it helpful
Glad the deisel is working for you, and the cats are enjoying it too x
Thanks, we are very happy with it
Good point on the need for a source of outside air for the convection action. Fireplaces in modern, well sealed homes don't work well because there is no fresh air coming in.
Yes exactly Chris some people don't know this.
A GREAT vlog, thank you - stay warm.
X
Thanks, will do
Thanks your vid was very helpful for me . Cheers
I was worried about the chimney height because of Harecastle tunnel and low bridges so thanks for showing it coming off. You've done a really good job at explaining these stoves. I'm sure that many people will now be considering getting one.
I was surprised how easy it was to get the chimney off. We will definitely be removing it in summer.
You are both so entertaining x
Thank you, we were just saying how we don't think we've done a sit down and talk to you guys in ages. It felt really good.
Yup, nodded all the way through going yup, agree - same here 👍
Great video girls... love watching your life afloat...
Phew was a little nervous before watching as I’m having one fitted so I’m so glad you’re happy with it 😀
I don't think you should be nervous anymore. It is so simple and lovely.
Hi girls just found you on UA-cam .I have been watching the Crusing the cut vlogs and found yourselves. looks like a great life keep up the good work ,loving the vlogs.
Interesting video, answered lots of questions I had. I admit I am biased against diesel because of how smelly and noxious diesel cars are, so I would always be concerned about diesel fumes inside the boat. Plus using meths and chucking a match at it puts me off. My Dad liked to see a stove lit for cold evenings. Our system was to light the stove 2 hours before we planned to stop and open all the windows in the hope that it had died down enough for the interior to be bearable and not roasting. (A metal box, with a heat source is basically the same as an oven).
Great video you are very brave.
Thanks
Well now, who's proud of their new diesel stove? Very nice ladies! It appears to be an easy and safe operation.
We are.
Good sailing! Hot stuff!
Thank you both for showing us your shiny new heater. I did wonder about bridges/tunnels and the chimney but that's well catered for I see 😀 Looking forward to the costings vs the other types of heating just incase I get a boat one day! You should put these nuggets of info in a book and self publish on Kindle or something I would buy it and I'm sure others would too!
That's a good idea.
I love Kath's little narrowboat T-shirt
It's it lovely.
Love your videos! My grandparents had a Refleks stove in their boat already in the 60s. The best heater you can have, I think.
A DIY tip on fans, is to use Noctua computer fans. They are the most quiet you can get, and quite power efficient. They run on 12v. A good examle is the NF-A14 FLX.
The square computer fans mount in the corner of a doorway as well, helping push that hot air into the next room.
Well thanks for that.
So well explained that I want to buy one now and I don’t even have a boat😉💜
Too funny.
interesting as usual
There are several chimney cap designs (for boats with marine diesel stoves) that are aimed at reducing back-draft from windy conditions. When I lived on a houseboat, a number of boaters liked the "H" shaped chimney cap. Some liked the "wind-vane" style. If back-draft becomes and issue, something to investigate.
Super dooper informative vlog....nice to see you've bonded with your stove, looking forward to the usage vlog as we're interested in the running costs compared to other heating types. Thanks for using my question in the pop-ups it put a big smile on "Mrs Localfella's" face.
Take care,
Regards Steve
Glad you found it informative. We will do the costs video, but spoiler alert we are quite happy with our spend so far.
Two lovely ladies as warm as toast. Take care now ❤️
I was on a business trip to Newbury ,UK .I was Sitting in bar of my hotel desperate to talk to someone but hard luck ...so went out for a walk to near by Canal , There I saw house boats , people cooking , enjoying having beers , most of them greeted me first , went through the whole canal until a highway appeared and saw so many of the these boats than suddenly I dint felt lonely ,Nature has its powers, good luck with your boat and mechanic tinkerings..! may be someday you would become the wholesole Boatlife advisors from buying to maintainenace advise/services.
I"m so glad you had this positive experience.
Good to see you ladies! Hugs😎👍❤️🇨🇦
Year great vid , covered it all, I wrote about two or three different things through a video but I erased them all because you’re covered them all😊 but I do like the modern regulator and thermocouple fuel cutout (if the flame goes out and doesn’t relight)😎
Enjoyed this one, I expect the diesel stove is far superior to solid fuel. No more lugging heavy bags of coal, less mess in the boat and I expect it’s more economical for you.
You have no idea how happy I am about no more coal.
Great videos, very helpful. Re the use of the Webasto - apart from the after shower dilema is there a need to use the central heating now you have the diesel fire?
Thanks for sharing all of the info, although I'm sorry the situation even came up where it was cold enough in the boat you had to have the scarf and headbands back on before lighting the stove! As always, great to see you two doing well :)
It was down to 10 degrees, and outside was 7, and we just went for a bit of a shop while the heater cooled down
what an informative episode, you should give David ctc some tips lol. Looking at your cowl it looks like a venturi type which is supposed to create a vaccum whichever direction the wind comes from , i made one for my workshop wood burner from a fire extinguisher. I have seen a vlog where the diesel stove is on a yacht and they cook on it too.
Happy cruising with your stove.
Hello dear hearts. Thanks. You got the Sunday morning feeling just right. You boat is way too clean. I worry. Webasto produce a dry heat too. Any heater that does not put water into the space it is heating is a dry heater. Like how the tiles are reflected in the reflex. Today is deep sorrow day for me. I have had to sell Mrs Mouse and, maybe, my Porsche' too. Loads of good sensible reasons, still recoving from my cancer and need checking up on, lots of friends and my wife are seriously ill and need support, had a foreign friend who had to go to hospital and had no insurance, so I'm broke. However, a lovely lady has bought Mrs Mouse, so good. Sorry to hijack your vblog. The words just came spurting out of my fingers xx
Oh I wish it was cleaner. It is so quick to tidy. I am so sorry about Mrs Mouse, but you are a good friend and you do need to look after yourself too.
I love your lego paint brush pot!
Hi great vlogs, please can you tell me where you punched your heater from and how much was it and also the pri
Oops should be where did you purchase your heater and how much? Also the cost of fitting ? Thanks👍🇬🇮
Thank you ladies, wonderful update. If I didn't have access to super inexpensive firewood, I'd happily install a diesel stove here in my home.
True, if you have good firewood a lovely wood burner is awesome.
I had a central heating water jacketed wood furnace with circulating baseboard heat hooked in tandem with my oil furnace. Great when I was young. I really enjoyed splitting oak. But where I lived I went through about 7 cords a year. Eventually I got really tired of emptying the ashes... :)
@@sleepy314 I only do about 3 cords a year. LOVE the heat and the low cost, but there's a lot of time and labor involved. Pellet stove requires power, which can be problematic here, but a gravity fed diesel stove, on the other hand............
Ladies if just found out that Paul who fitted your stove is going to be fitting mine . After I view your installation vlog I then remembered paul who fitted your stove so ye it's a small world 😁.
Great video very informative looks like a good heater and easy to use once you get used to it. A lot cleaner than your other fire and no coal and logs to lug around. You could do with one of those long gas lighters to light the meths just lower it down the fire and light it. As throwing the match down isn't ideal as the charcoal from the match will block the holes in the jets over time where the diesel comes in then it won't burn proper and you don't want that. Something like this just google Refillable-Plastic-Kitchen-Lighters the one's you put gas in and give you a flame should be much easier than a match hope this helps. Stay safe and warm and see you in the next.
I think the stove can handle one or two matches a year but will keep it in mind
Your stove looks very similar to the Alaska Marine Heater my cousin has on his 40ft sail boat here in the US, his is a full time live aboard as well
Outstanding girls, outstanding. Well explained (clever you can cook on it too). My house mostly smells of baking cake - obviously.
yes, the cooking was a lovely bonus
Great VLOG, always enjoy listening to you really informative. Cannot say a lot more about this ,just stay safe it's a jungle out there.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
Hi Girls,
Like watching your videos from Oz. If you put a bit of water in the meths it doesn’t smoke.
a hearthwarming vid! 😊🔥
Thanks
We think your new stove is wonderful. Less condensation and dust to deal with can only be a good thing. Seemed very quick to light too and if it only took an hour to warm the whole boat that sounds very efficient. Not surprised we didn’t see the kitties if they have the warmest place in the boat. I have to agree with Kath, not a big fan of cold bathrooms. 🥶
Yes, all the things you said- we love it. the kittens have the warm cat shelf- another commenter suggested it is a heated shelf and I guess it is.
Great vlog refleks unite 👍👍👍👍👍
Very true. Can we have a secret hand shake...
@@TheNarrowboatExperience Secret hand shake I.m going dumb here what's that haha
You know, like we are in a secret gang (of refleks lovers) so we have a secret handshake.
Yep 🤝🤝🤝🤝
telling stories on each other is fun
Love the matching tiles and headbands. wondering how cold i is outside
On the day we lit it to show you it was 7 outside
we love our stove good idea about the fan because our bedroom is always cold
DIESEL BEAUTIFUL...Success... warm boats are hot boats so I always leave a fan on from my air vent......Pushes heat around successfully.
One small thing up here many tend to install heat movers in the wall between the room whit the stove and the one who is cold.
the easy way to do that is to install a 12V fan in the wall between the salone and the bathroom.
and yes blue flame technology is fantastic.
Yes this is a great idea.
Called down draughty. Well done, ladies🤣👍🇦🇺
Now I have that Duran Duran song playing over and over in my head.
Got to be better for Cath's back not humping bags of coal around and cleaner too. I've visited some narrow boats and they have been very smoky. There are some near to me and you can smell the log burner all the time when the wind is coming in my direction. On my cruiser I use a tiny electric bar and plenty of woolly pullies or just shiver. Great vlog as always and well explained. Thanks guys take care. Alan x
I think that is true about burning wood, especially wet wood, you are always going to smell it.
As the smell can sometimes flow inward when its windy, it is not 'room-sealed', meaning the air intake is not direct from outside, as in a modern domestic gas boiler, but from the 'room'.
This necessitates the ventilation you speak of, and should have a Carbon Monoxide Detector nearby too. I assume you have such a device, and check its operation regularly.
Oh, and, "one big puff" - very funny. :)
As I was watching the videos about the stove's installation, I was wondering if cooking could take place on that top plate. I thought the opening was perfect for a handle on a pot 😊
it boils the kettle great
Another excellent technical video. Another way to light them is to drop a piece of burning firelighter in instead of using meths.
Tricky to drop though
Can and will you place one of those heat powered fans on top of the stove? I never knew of such a thing until NB videos and I put one on my wood stove.
The eco fan will burn out on top as it is way too hot. But another boater with the same stove suggested getting a trivet , so we are looking around for one.
Great vid as usual!
Questions
Will you have to have the chimney cleaner regularly? (Once a year or something). I’m just curious what the manufacturer or installed has suggested in that regard. I supposed it’s entirely possible that it’ll burn so clean that you’ll never have to worry about that.
Did you get the stove that has pipe wrapped around inside so that you can eventually hook it in to your water central heating system and or clarifier?
Comment
If you ever have to replace your outside chimney pipe. Certain pipe caps/tops can reduce back draft. Yours may, I don’t know. Just thought I throw that out there through.
