- We block the canal whilst refilling our narrowboat with fuel (diesel and gas)! We then continue our narrowboat journey along the South Stratford Canal and enjoy traversing the longest Aqueduct in England. We also share with you how much diesel we have used for propulsion.

The swimming lessons on the aqueduct would have been in the 1950’s. The restoration and reopening of the canal was done in the early 60’s, partially assisted by prisoners from local gaols. The IWA National Rally in 1964 was at Stratford (so boats either came down the Stratford or up the Avon). The Queen Mother attended and reopened the canal, and gave a speech from the theatre that’s just downstream of the basin at Stratford. I was there - and very young. Our boat had problems getting under the final bridge into the basin. The plaque for attending the rally was made by prisoners at the gaols.
Couldn’t agree with Kath more. It’s the slow pace of life that I love. We started in 2015 because we had been through a lot in 2014, our mum and dad passing away within 6 months of each other was the final straw. I was watching a program one late night. The program was nothing special but I just couldn’t stop watching. It was a camera on the front of a narrow boat going along the K and A. A few days later I had booked my sister, my brother in law, my son and my husband for a short break on the K and A. We really want a boat but just haven’t found the right one yet. It was the slow life that I fell in love with.

Just got into watching the channel over the last month, it’s a great series. I picked you up from Cruising the Cut. I do accept that the Bradley lock is named as such but it is also know as the “Odd Lock” so you are both right! Best wishes to you both from Nigel of Stratford.
Just remember, the pontcysyllte aqueduct WAS built in Wales, (Well, they had to put it somewhere!🙃) BUT, it was built by a Scottish and an English engineer!!!🤣 But it is a very fine piece of engineering all ways round!!
Those bridges are very tight, especially that one which hit you! If you remember, I saw you at Stratford Basin lock, we never did go up the Stratford canal, so many problems, we decided not to. Now I'm waiting to see if I make it into the vlog, after all my hard work with the lock?!

The narrow boat experience is not a race of competition . It’s a adventure of enjoyment not to be hurried. Loved your accent describing the locks and bridges.
Here in America we use both poppers to keep boats from rubbing on the dock but you never see both bumpers on the narrow boats

Thanks. We like to show the little details that you get to see from our perspective and thats' why we don't really use fast forward (time lapse). We also don't put a camera on the bow as it does create an extra layer of editing.

If I may suggest a gas/fuel saving measure those who like it slow (going) surely appreciate?
The device is called the Wonderoven. It is basically a specially shaped set of polystyreen or wool filled bags which lets you place a hot pot inside to keep it hot for hours on end. You can make very nice stews and with a little bit of practice even bread is possible.
The device is meant to be made by anyone who has moderate sewing skills.
UA-cam has a video on it in which description the patterns can be downloaded free of charge.
I use two of them in my kitchen and a smaller (scalled down) version in my camper van and let me tell you they are great. They let you cook with a fraction of the gas/fuel consumption especially when stewing or trying to tenderise cheaper cuts of meat. The basic principle is heat retention...
If you like to test a dish out before commiting to cut up an old bedsheet or duvée cover, you can use some blankets or bedding to put the pot in. Simply bring the dish in the pot to a rolling boil and place the pot (on a cotton towel) in bed and cover well with several folds of the bedding or blankets...
The heat retained will cook the dish for hours on end and a dish started just after lunch is ready at dinner time...brilliant, try it...
BTW: there is another saving tips in there as well: you don't need the more deer cuts to have tender meats in the dish you can easily go for the cheaper ones (more sinuous cuts) and create very tasty and tender meat dishes by stewing in the wonderoven without any fuel consumption.

Dip stick measurement was standard for most of our tractors. Ours had unreliable electronic gauges (1960s new tech was so lovely...) so that was how we had to check. Some of the older tractors had mechanical ones with the dial on the tank. I have a lot of experience with motorcycles that don't have a gauge. Older ones had a dual-intake petcock where one was higher in the tank. When the engine stalled you switched to the "reserve" position and knew you only had X amount left.
Love the aqueduct, it's always an unusual view. We don't have them here that make's it special. Just got to the cat section they're loving it. We have 5 plus we look after the towns forgotten cats, we feed and water them and more importantly get them fixed and back home as soon as possible.

At about 7 mins you go under that very narrow bridge and just as you pop through a duck scoots on through in the opposite direction. I love the thought of him just waiting at the side as you come through, patiently waiting his turn.

In regards to tea making; I use a 2l stainless steel vacuum flask at work. Brew a pot and fill it in the morning and it's still hot at the end of the day. Fuel and time efficient.

I remember riding in an old Victorian steam launch. It had been found at the bottom of lake Windermere and restored. It had a steam kettle on the engine that could boil a gallon of water in 10 seconds-now that's a fast cup of tea!

Thanks guys, good point about keeping the engine going in the locks, being a small boat I always tie up to the lock ladder. Oh for a diesel engine it costs me around a £1.00 per mile using petrol, my journey from Shardlow to the Ashby cost about £50.00. Really like the look of the area you are in. Take care. Alan x

Lazy Days welcome to the very select greater order of boats named Lazy Days, mine was built in 1930 at Castleford, Yorkshire on the Aire and Calder canal. She was a family cruiser built of ash planks on oak beams, a teak deck and mahogany wheel house, two berths forward, galley and head. Sofa that pulled out to sleep two and the carriage dining are would also break down to make a large single bed. Originally power by twin Penta engines. She was great to handle and I covered many miles in the 15 years I owned her.
In 1940 she was taken into the navy and spent 3 days at Dunkirk taking troops off the beaches to larger craft off shore, return to England with bullet holes at the water line, yet full of fleeing troops. She continued her war effort on mine patrol of the Thames Estuary. After that she went back to being a family boat, moored to a small piece of land on the River Thames, the eldest son of that family became a captain in the Royal Navy.
So in 1995 I bough this little 30ft boat and lived aboard while I worked at Heathrow Airport, just 7 miles from my mooring. Each 5 years I took her back to Dunkirk as a member of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships, Return to Dunkirk where we were introduced to The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and Prince Michael of Kent who is the associations Honorary Admiral.
During the 15 years I owned her she has traveled up the East coast from the Medway to Castleford. Attended classic boat rally's on the Thames, in Oostende, Antwerp and Gouda. I kept the boat in the Netherlands for three years and toured the rivers, canals and lakes of that wonderful boating country, also visiting Belgium and French canals. But it was the people of Holland that won my heart.
If you ever get the chance to nip across the English channel with your Lazy Days I'm sure you will have a wonderful time too. I will pop in on your channel from time to time and would just like to wish you both safe sailing and great adventures.
What a wonderful Sunday wake up to cruise the English canals with you. I laughed when I saw I was drinking from the same mug while watching you bring tea to Kath.
I pour a little stream of very hot water down the side of a gas bottle for 15 or 20 seconds to get a more accurate reading, this works especially well in winter. The steel becomes quite warm but is cool exactly where the liquid level is. The main advantage of this method is the sharper temperature differential between hot and cold. I am glad to see you are not so concerned about Alice and Munchie running around loose and snoozing on top of the roof. Lovely video.

My wife, sadly died last November, and I have hired boats over the last 6 years as part of our uk and French holidays. No doubt that the Pontcysyllte aqueduct, as well as Wales generally, is stunning. We've been over it a few times, in our week hire boats and on a day boat. Did the Foxton locks in July last year and the Stourport ring, with another couple, the year before. Just love the lifestyle, but it is on hold at the moment. There was a further train track under the Edstone Aqueduct which went to Alcester which became disused in the 1960s. This was where the water was used to top up steam locos

Have you ladies ever thought of making your own rope fenders? I know you probably have more than enough to do already, but it's such an interesting old craft and they look wonderful. Another very interesting video--thank you.
It might be a little bit old-ladyish, but if you put your kettle on a cork mat and stick a tea cosy over it it will retain heat for some time and reboil faster. It's also probably safer than trying to decant very hot water to and from a flask on a moving boat! You could even use the slow cooker bag you demonstrated months ago, although it might be a bit bulky and inconvenient for daily use?

You lovely ladies should try to make solar tea. You use a 4 liter glass or clear plastic. It must be optically clear. Fill with water add your tea bags and let it sit in the sun for about 30 minutes. Pour sweeten to taste and drink. You will save a lot of energy making solar tea.

To avoid having to wipe the fuel dipstick, slowly lower it in till it just touches the surface of the fuel, you usually get a little ripple as it touches. Then you know how far down the level is. Works best with a fairly full tank say over half. If you get on the Thames you will be required to turn your engine off in locks.

I was working at that lock two weeks ago (5 July), and since then I have been ill (not COVID) and in much pain. It's a lovely place to park at the car park below the aqueduct and walk up to the lock. The bottom gate of that lock needs no excuse to swing open, but the top gate is fine. So cat like to roll around in gravel and dust.

A very interesting vlog as usual. You’ve got the same doormat as us although ours is in the bow.
Talking about the fuel and coal boats brings to mind that given our current weather, "Sunday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. (32.7C) Heat index values as high as 101." (38.3C), I'd be looking for a _cold_ boat to flag down!
