Wolfwalkers was partially based on the werewolves of Ossory, and the Lord Protector was based on Oliver Cromwell, who invaded Ireland in 1649. In Irish history he's typically a villain, in English he's often a hero. Edit. I mean generally. Sry this sounds so b&w
The Lord Protector wasn't based on Oliver Cromwell, he straight up was Oliver Cromwell. The Lord Protector was his offical title. Also, maybe it's just been my experience, but as a Brit I'd say opinions of him here are pretty mixed. Some see him as a hero who liberated the people from a tyrannical monarch, but a very substantial number of people (myself included tbh) see him as little more than a tryannical dictator who simply replaced one group of oppressors with another.
Don't forget Robyn told her father that Kilkenney makes her feel like the home she lives in is a cage not being able to break free of its confinement as well as control with lack of escape over young girl's life subjected on unjust treatment by everyone who reside there that herself has no power over own life.
Depends, I'm English and I've never considered Oliver Cromwell a hero in history. Depends which side of history your taught. But I've never seen his portraited as anything but a villian
Studio Cartoon Saloon and Tomm Moore's so called "Irish Folklore Trilogy" are three amazing movies! The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers. They are all standalone and each focuses on a specific folklore. They are really magical, would recommend the other two! Interesting fact: Robyn was originally a boy. Mentioning religion isn't just a reference, this movie is somewhat using christian colonialism and destruction of pagan beliefs as its central motif. The lord protector is literally Oliver Cromwell, a historic traitor and tyrannical dictator.
Interesting facts about Cromwell - executed Charles I for treason, reformed the British army into the redcoats that would dominate for centuries after, desolved parliament, burned down the theatres, banned Christmas, and wiped out 80-90% of Ireland's population at the time. After ruling England as "Lord Protector" for 15 years, he died in England (and not by wolves), and was replaced by Charles II.
There's a graphic novel of the movie and it gives an origin for the Wolfwalkers. Years ago, there were tribes of people who had healing magic. When St. Patrick came to Ireland to spread Christianity, these healers refused to convert and every time St. Patrick would preach, they howled like wolves deep in the forest. In response to this, St. Patrick cursed them (or blessed them) to take on the forms of wolves at night.
This has given me a new appreciation for wolves, they are far from monsters, they just want to protect what is theirs. They are gentle, intelligent creatures.
A nice quick analysis from an artist: One of the things I love about this movie is the art style. Not just because it looks beautiful, especially with the background, but it actually has a lot more symbolism especially with the characters. With Robin and her father along with the other people living in the town, their line art is more bold and sharp. It’s as if they’re staying in the lines, like how Robin and her father has to obey Lord Proctor and stay within the walls of the town. But with Mebh, her mom, the wolves, and Robin (after she got bit), their line art is more rough and sketchy. Even the coloring is outside those lines. The art with those characters are more freeing and wild like how those characters themselves are roaming free with no restrictions when they’re in the forest. The huge difference in art style between the different characters really contributes well with the story and the dynamic between the characters, a man vs. wild kind of deal. TLDR; This movie is one of the best animated movies and has one of the best art styles I’ve seen. Using the different art styles of the characters is a great detail to tell a character development, especially for Robin and her father! (Fun Fact: James Baxter animate one of the scenes for this movie!)
Her name is Medbh, Irish gaelige sounds are different from English sounds, in this case the d is silent and bh makes a v sound, the English spelling would be maeve A lot of Irish names seem hard to pronounce if you don't know the sounds the letters make, like in Siobhan (shuh-vawn), Aoife (ee - fa), Tadgh ( like tiger without the er), pádraig (paw- drig, this is the Irish version of patrick) and eoin (literally a different spelling of Owen)
Absolutely wonderful film! Really needs more attention. Btw, I just noticed: Sean Bean's character *doesn't* die. I guess all it takes is for him to be animated.
2009 was a legendary year for animation, so I'm ok that Secret of Kells didn't win back then. But Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers were absolutely robbed.
@@byronius7012 you really should! A lot of Cartoon Saloon fans dont watch this movie just because it isn’t part of the irish folclore trio but it still is just as good and just as beautiful as the others, really recommend it!
Aurora's song fits so well in the wolf running scene. I love the care Cartoon Saloon puts into their 2D amimation, truly showing that the medium still has merrit.
Very cool that you are reacting to this and also the wolfwalkers ability to turn into a wolf when the body is unconscious is sort of like astral projection
Hey shark have you seen the secret of Kells or Song of the sea? Those are the other two movies made by this studio and both are in my opinion incredible
The Lord Protector is a fictionalised depiction of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England during the period between King Charles I’ds beheading and the reinstatement of the monarchy. He’s rightfully loathed in Ireland for persecution of the Irish people.
I'm not usually one for requests or anything like that, but I completely agree with the comments mentioning the other two films by this studio. Very good, very underrated. Oh and this is before I've watched, super excited!
The Irish Folklore Trilogy is one of my absolute favourite 2d animated movie collections. Tomm Moore is a master. Also, one of the few movies where Sean Bean DOESN’T die. XD

Cartoon Saloon is a studio worth following. They have done four movies so far. This one is the latest. Secret of Kells was the first one, Song of the Sea was the second. All those movies have a Celtic root. The third one, The Breadwinner, was a departure from their usual Celtic stories, since it is situated in Afghanistan, about a girl pretending to be a boy in a Taliban lead Afghanistan to work to help her parents. Also an excellent film that fans of Cartoon Saloon sadly ignore because it is so different. They are currently working on their first stop motion film, The Inventor, which is on Leonardo DaVinci.
Another interesting piece of trivia is that originally Robin would have been a young boy, probably with a father-son relationship angle. They eventually made her a girl because it gave new layers to the discrimination she’s enduring in Kilkenny, being a girl who has traditionally male interests; her father clearly let her help him before but doesn’t want her drawing negative attention beyond just being an English person in Ireland. It also makes her relationship with Maeb more interesting… Some people ship them, which the director Tom Moore didn’t intend but has said it’s a fair interpretation. My take is they were going for a found family dynamic between the respective children and parents, and that Robin regardless of gender would be like siblings with Maeb, but it’s vague enough that anyone can read as they wish into it (and they’re young enough that anything could happen later on).
If you like this art style cartoon saloon also did secret of Kells and song of the sea. Both absolutely beautiful movies but this one is easily my favorite
this movie is actually the third in a "trilogy" of Irish Folklores. The stories don't connect with each other except for some easter eggs, but they all have the same stunning style and structure. All of them were nominated for The Oscars, sadly none of them won but well, that's life. You definitely should check the others out: The Secret of Kells and Song of The Sea (my favorite)
Since you like Robin's accent I thought you might find it interesting to know where she's from To me she sounds like She is from somewhere in the Yorkshire area, Sheffield to try and pin it down
Also, her last name Goodfellowe is interesting as well since in the past most English last names were usually given based on people's jobs or a characteristic they had (eg: smith, baker, and my own last name Goodwin comes from the old English good and wine - which translates to friend) Which means one of Robin's ancestors was just such a 'good fellow' that it became their name
@TheFlamingShark 1:23:12 whatever injury the wolfwalker gets in wolf form happens to the sleeping body. so when a wolfwalker gets shot while in wolf form the wound from the shot appears on their human body so while their spirit slowly makes it's way to their human body the human body remains still to bleed out. when the wolfwalkers wolf spirit returns to their body the wolfwalker then slowly starts dying

Great reaction! This movie was amazing! I really liked it more on this rewatch! On my first watch I was kind of disappointed that I was able to predict the whole story, but on this rewatch I really liked it more! Highly recommend checking out their other movies! And I recommend an unrelated French movie "Suicide Shop"!
Another interesting note: the Irish word for wolf is “Mac Tíre” which directly translates to “Son of the Land”. This shows how important wolves were to Irish identity. The English wiping out Irish wolves was functional, in that it allowed for English industrial farming, but it was symbolic also, representing the erasure of the Sons of Ireland. Also, the native Irish would have known how to navigate the ancient woodlands far better than the invaders. Chopping the woods down allowed for the English to both map the land and travel through it easier and faster, and thus subjugate it better. Wolfwalkers does an incredible job of visually demonstrating the historical methods of colonial suppression while saying very little verbally.
Kind of on the subject of the movie, I sometimes get really really sad that I wont ever get the chance to be a cat. I just really want to be a cat with a human-like personality or something, like in Warrior cats. Doing stuff like hunting and learning to fight by my clan's side just seems amazing, it's sad to me that I'll never do that
3:40 - Kilkenny, Ireland... "never heard of this city before" well, I only know this city for their beer. There's Guiness from Dublin (the black draft beer everyone in Europe knows) and Kilkenny, it's a ruby colored beer. well, enough of this. I've always wanted to watch this movie but I'm no Apple TV customer. Thank you for this reaction so I can see the full movie This ending is pretty heavy to the feelings. Robyn had lost her mother long ago and then seeing Mebh lose her mother too is too much for her. So she did the only right thing she could.
This movie got me close to bawling my eyes out 2 times, and I still have tears running down my cheeks as I write this. I have no idea why it got me so bad. Guess I got a good cry out of it I suppose...
I wish I could buy it but ya can't. Anyway, I really hated the "lord protector" he's like judge claud frolo and Gaston mixed. Really wanted him to have an ill fate.
You should react to all the films of Cartoon Saloon. Wolfwalkers is probably their best but the other ones are great to. They don't have to many, only 5 this included
I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED THIS HOLY SHIT THIS IS ACTUALLY MY FAVOURITE MOVIE POINT BLANK AGHHHHHH I GUESS I'M NOT DOING MY ASSIGNMENT TONIGHT ALSO DID I MENTION AGGGHHHHHH
I personally see mebh and robyn as sisters rather than a ship as their portrayed to be young at 12 years old. Plus their parents seem to have a thing and even though their not related by blood, it would still be weird to me if they dated whilst their parents where together. The director admitted the lqbtq themes of "coming out" were accidental and their parents did fall in love making them sisters
Sidenote: Robin's lineart and animation goes from tidy to rougher as she becomes a wolfwalker and starts makimg her own decisions.
Same for Bill.
Its such a shame that Wolfwalkers aired during pandemic and many people missed it. So underrated
Underrated sure but not by that much. It was an alright movie.

This ending is pretty heavy to the feelings. Robyn had lost her mother long ago and then seeing Mebh lose her mother too is too much for her. So she did the only right thing she could.
I really hope they do a sequel to this movie it's really good
nice i love this movie
Is no one else gonan acknowledge he called Merlin and OWL!?!? Im 100% sure hes either a Hawk or a Falcon!!!! T-T so much pain..
Juuuust a tid bit. If the father and the mother get married, that would make Robyn and Mabh step-siblings.
I mean, they’re not actually related ^^’
@@Hana_H That’s why I said step-siblings-
@@redballoon9007 sorry ^^’
@@Hana_H Tis just a misunderstanding. It’s alright.
Super excited for this😌
This movie got me close to bawling my eyes out 2 times, and I still have tears running down my cheeks as I write this. I have no idea why it got me so bad. Guess I got a good cry out of it I suppose...
I wonder what they'll think when they see tigers.
This was such a good movie
Since you love this art style I have to recommend ranking of kings.
Ranking of Kings is SO good
I wish I could buy it but ya can't. Anyway, I really hated the "lord protector" he's like judge claud frolo and Gaston mixed. Really wanted him to have an ill fate.
Yesss, I adore this movie so much!! By far my favorite movie by CartoonSaloon ! 💙
I love this movie.😎❤
And the funny thing is right now I'm wearing a necklace with a wolf on it.💖
I love the movie. Style looks like child of light
You should react to all the films of Cartoon Saloon. Wolfwalkers is probably their best but the other ones are great to. They don't have to many, only 5 this included
Fucking love this movie
Bro I ran here
I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED THIS HOLY SHIT THIS IS ACTUALLY MY FAVOURITE MOVIE POINT BLANK AGHHHHHH I GUESS I'M NOT DOING MY ASSIGNMENT TONIGHT ALSO DID I MENTION AGGGHHHHHH
9:53. 😂
He couldn't have been more wrong
IM SO HAPPY HE WATCHED THIS FINALLY
I personally see mebh and robyn as sisters rather than a ship as their portrayed to be young at 12 years old. Plus their parents seem to have a thing and even though their not related by blood, it would still be weird to me if they dated whilst their parents where together. The director admitted the lqbtq themes of "coming out" were accidental and their parents did fall in love making them sisters
Just a note: Ireland was colonised by the British for over 800 years. Since the 12th century. The Irish/English conflict is literally ancient
This is still a great movie. I love watching this movie. :D
Great to have Sean Bean in the movie!
Creative movie. Nice visuals.
We don't talk about the scores it got 😂😂😂
My favorite animated movie in recent years
