Ok, so here is my reasoning as to why Wolfwalkers should win the awards. The animation is inconsistent with reason. You’ll notice while watching that Robyn’s style of animation changes as she feels closer to the forest and as a wolf. The entire wild and wolves are done in a sketchy, looser style that keeps even the “skeletal” structure visible as the characters move. As a contrast, the humans and Kilkenny are done in harsher, sharper lines. Their designs, as well as the stranger structure of scenes are pulled directly from historical art references as a way to reflect that older style just as Cartoon Saloons Secret if Kells was done in a style to reflect the real illumination of the book of Kells. And no background character has an ugly design without reason. Compare that, this jail that Robyn finds herself in to the beauty and freedom of the forest and wolves. And then you get into the nitty gritty, the actual details put into animating a film like this. Most of it was done by hand, BY HAND!!! The only parts that weren’t entirely done so we’re those scenes done in “wolf vision” where they created computer generated models and layered then with hand rendered drawings in a method known as 2.5D animation. This move deserves every drop of praise to continuing to work and develop and pioneer a mode of animation that has slowly been dying. Five years of waiting for this movie, and studying it, cumulates into a film far more impressive then Soul, even if I loved that movie as well. Anyways, if you liked this film, you should watch the other two films in Cartoon Saloon’s Irish Trilogy. Secret of Kells isn’t as polished, but it was their very first film so that’s forgivable and Song of the Sea is really well done
I fully believe that this should have won the golden globe, the only reason it didn’t is because Disney always wins and a lot of people don’t know who cartoon saloon is :((((((
Brittney Rodgers Actually, Disney and Pixar doesn't always wins the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. I know that How to Train Your Dragon 2 had won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature and that movie is a Dreamworks movie but I do agree that Wolfwalkers should have won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature.

Secret of Kells was the first of theres that I watched when I was a little girl, and I was just so blown away and attached to the studio. When I found Son of the Sea it just made me that much more in love with the studio and just majorly sad. Then Breadwinner decided to come out and I was emotionally recked. That movie was just soooo intense and convincing. But personally I think Wolfwalkers is their best movie so far. It has beautiful art and an amazing story. Thus far its my favorite, and I’m hoping their next movie (My Father’s Dragon, I think) will blow me away.
This is one of my new favorite movies! Also! When they refer to the Wolfwakers as "Pagan nonsense", he's not exactly wrong about it being Pagan. The definition of Pagan is basically 'one who doesn't practice any of the abrahamic religions'. So like the Druids and Irish natives who practiced spirituality, it's seen as "witchcraft". That's why I love this movie! As a modern Pagan, I'm absolutely delighted to see Pagan influenced stories and mythologies snuggly intertwined with wholesome and captivating media. This movie deserves all the awards it can get, the story and animation make it a classic (at least in my opinion) :)
The folklore in this movie is actually very much Christian. It's influenced mainly by two things- The Werewolves of Ossory, of Topographia Hibernica fame, an explicitly Christian story in which a priest performs the last rites of the female in a repentant couple cursed to live every other 7 years as wolves, and the Benandanti, an Italian concept claimed by several different figures in which, through some means (generally the blessing of an angel in their dreams) pious holy warriors of Christ or whatever spend their dreams as imaginary wolves fighting evil and witchcraft. This was not taken extremely well by the Catholic establishment but for a good period of time they were viewed as "good witches" or just straight up holy.
However, the "pagan nonsense" stuff imo is meant at something different- Oliver Cromwell's Protestant zealotry and suppression of Irish culture. Not only did he suppress Irish Catholicism, many of its folkloric local imports were viewed with special hostility, for pretty obvious reasons given England's general quest to eliminate Irish culture in their first experiments into colonialism.
This movie was so cool! My family has a very strong connection to our Irish heritage and loves to embrace it with small stuff like pillows, blankets, wall hanging things with sayings, jewelry, kitchen hand towels, and so on. My grandmother started the tradition of our middle name being her maiden name. She gave it to my mother and aunt, then my mother passed the name down to me. My mom even gave me an Irish name. Anything Irish is definitely up my family’s alley haha
In fairness, it is "Witchcraft". During those times basically anything that wasn't Christian was Paganism and/or witchcraft. Christianity has a way of turning everything not associated with Christianity into monsters/demons meant to turn man away from Christianity. I think it's unfortunate this movie is so unknown. Though I get AppleTV wanting the movie only on their platform to drawn in viewers, I've never liked tactics like that.

I love that people internationally are finally getting to see Ireland's history, culture and folklore. We have such an amazing and often dark lot of stories and our ancient Gods and Goddesses are far more fun than half of the ones people know from other cultures. This movie blends our history and folklore so well. Oliver Cromwell was an evil dictator (a king in all but name and the acknowledged forefather of modern fascism as well as a idol of Adolf Hitler) who slaughtered men, women and children indiscriminately on Drogheda and Wicklow and who actually did ensure the last of Ireland's wolves were slaughtered so it makes full sense to use him for this. The art is very set in the style of Celtic and Celtic inspiration used by the studio, What I live is though Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea are both Irish stories, Breadwinner is not but done similarly with a lot of respect for the culture it portrays.
Regarding the cannon exploding - this is a very scary thing that absolutely does happen. A cannon is a controlled explosion with the goal of sending a hefty chunk of metal away at great speed - and given that metalworking was still quite inexact at the time, you could never be sure if that chunk of metal was the cannonball or bits of the cannon. By obstructing the barrel by pointing it at the ground, you have all but guaranteed that since the cannonball isn't going anywhere...well, that explosion has to go *somewhere*.
A father's love *always* prevails for his child, no matter what the offspring looks like. I really like this scene. Bill became the very thing he has hunted for so long, but that didn't matter to him. All that mattered to him was protecting his daughter. Never anger the wolf. You will get the fangs, otherwise. Never lock the wolf in a cage. You'll only make him\her more dangerous. Cromwell portrayed here was not a man of God. He was a slave of religion. The Chains of Fear amplified his hatred toward the unknown. In time, his pride and self righteousness blinded him form seeing the light witch lead to his death. He chose to kill himself out of fear instead of understanding. Magnificent. I think I encapsulated this scene perfectly. When I realized what happened to Bill, I almost screamed with joy. And when I saw what he looked like, I was sure: Oliver Cromwell was a dead man walking. My favourite of this, however, tied closely with Robyn disarming "The Lord Protector" with a single shot but it had to be when Bill's Lupus form intercepted Cromwell's sword with his teeth. At that moment, I could particularly hear him snarl "Only human.", right before he shatters the blade like sugar glass. It is at this point it becomes irrefutable: Oliver Cromwell is *nothing* before this Wild Magic. Edit: The phrase "Work is prayer" refers to the Catholic monastic practice of working and praying, generally associated with its use in the Rule of Saint Benedict. Benedict viewed prayer and work as partners, and believed in combining contemplation with action.
Seriously though Secret of Kells is one of my favorite animated movies of all time. Not only is it about one of my favorite works of art, but the blending of art where the animation looks like the book and the book looks like the animation. The knotwork and the stylistic choices *kiss*. And if you thought this movie had deep moments...
As someone who is a huge World History buff as well, Wolfwalkers is a 2D animated movie that is very informative on Irish history. And I'm pretty sure that there are some Irish people who are prejudice against the British in this day and age.
Now do the other CARTOON SALOON films-- THE SECRET OF KELLS and SONG OF THE SEA and THE BREADWINNER! All just as good as this one. If you like Irish Folklore and History, those are the perfect films for you (well, except for The Breadwinner--but it's still really good!) Plus this film wasn't just at the time when the English ruled Ireland, it was set in the time of Cromwell, who was even more of a genocidal butcher to the Irish than other English rulers. The 'Lord Protector' was cut very much from the same cloth, and might even be meant to be a stand-in for him.
The song Running With the Wolves is actually from a werewolf show called "Wolfblood"! It comes in at the third season, and it's been around for years! I'm glad I'm not the only one who knows about it anymore!
Yeah and have you watched the series or? Just that you wrote "werewolf show" when they are "wolfbloods"😂 (btw I'm not trying to correct you just thought it was funny😂)
@@sigridmflclfmd1662 I've seen all five seasons! It's just that since not everyone knows what a wolfblood is, and they are very similar to werewolves (not the same but similar) I thought I'd use a word more people would understand. And I agree, it is funny!
There was a little reference to one of their first movies "Secret of Kells"when Maeve pulls out a crystal from Robyn's backpack(the Eye of Columkil from the movie.) EDIT:This movie is can't be real. Sean Bean survived! He NEVER survives a movie, lol. The films creators said(when a lot of people felt deep LGBTQ emotions for the story, Robyn and Maeve)that they hadn't done the film with that in mind, but accepted whatever people thought it was about. Reminded me a bit of "Luca". :)
The "work is prayer" thing is kinda a Protestant bastardization of the Catholic monastic Rule of Benedict: "ora et labora", or "work and prayer". "Ora et labora" expresses the need to balance work, prayer, and socialization in order to live a happy life.
So glad you liked it and that you understood the importance of our forests. Its really important to keep telling stories from all over the world so we dont forget what has come bafore. Great video thanks for sharing
Ah, you haven't seen 'Secret of Kells' or 'Song of the Sea' yet then? If you liked this one, you'll love them just as much I bet. Kells is set even further back, around the 11th century, then Song of the Sea is closer to modern. They all have this sort of animation style, flat and highly stylised, originally meant to sort of look like the images in the illuminated 'Book of Kells'. Also all of them scored by the band Kíla and all of them aggressively Irish XD
Fun fact, Kilkenny is where Cartoon Saloon, the animation studio which made Wolfwalkers, Song of the Sea, Secret of Kells, The Breadwinner etc, is located at.
The tapestry with the knight killing the wolf was a play on similar iconography of St. George, the patron saint of England, killing the dragon, so it was meant to symbolize how the English were taking over that part of Ireland and banning and killing the local culture.
I wanted to ask if you have seen “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” or would be willing to react to it. It came out in 2002 and is a childhood favorite of mine and I think it is, to this day, still a great movie. Hopefully one day you’d be willing to look into it? Thank you for your lovely videos!
Actually, Robyn and Mebh's parents are just friends at the end of the movie. According to the directors, they have a platonic relationship. They're actually more in support of Robyn and Mebh being romantically linked.
i got the vibe that there was something like that planned for Robyn and Mebn but then in the end it seemed like the parents got together and I was like whaaaat??
Cartoon Saloon is the studio that created this. Their Irish Trilogy of Wolfwalkers, Song of the Sea, and Book of Kells is some of the best animation ever created. They incorporate Irish mythology and ground it in amazing characters.
I actually have the book on how this movie was made from Barnes and nobles and ever since I watched secret of Kells and song of the sea( my fave), I have been in love with their work! The book includes story boards, character designs, scripts, the whole shebang. I go back and take inspiration from it for my own animations and storyboards.
i might have a suggestion for a show you could watch i find it an awsome show and i would love to see you're reaction to it btw the shows name is 'The owl house'
This film won so many awards. It would be great for this film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. I would like it if it has other nominations like Best original score and others. I would be amazing if it wins.
15:28 Here it is also necessary to take into account the fact that as soon as she falls asleep in the town, she will either be killed or put in a cage.
YES IT SHOULD WIN! Like bro every winner for "Best Animated Feature" are always 3D (Except "Spirited Away"). This'll be the first 2d animation winner in a long time, and this is the chance.
You absolutely need to see The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. If you loved the animation in this, you'll be stunned by it in those films, which make up a non-story linking trilogy. There is also The Breadwinner, also very much worth watching, but completely unrelated to the Irish mythology of Kells, Sea and Wolfwalkers.
6 "Aww"s and 3 "Mmm"s, indicating there were at least 9 emotionally enjoyable moments (as opposed to emotionally saddening, intense, satisfying, etc. moments)
I have a theory that Robyn was a witch before she became a wolfwalker. I believe her mother was killed for being a witch, this being the reason Robyn’s father is so afraid of her disobeying the church. He left England to keep Robyn from getting accused as a witch. I think Merlin is her familiar because she seems to be able to communicate with him and why she would be so attached to him whereas her father just thinks he’s a normal bird. Also the wolf bite seemed to set in with Robyn immediately but it took a lot longer for her father see the magic. Perhaps her magic as a witch just took the wolf magic quicker and normal humans take longer to become magical.
God I loved this movie. I know it's not this studio's style to make sequels but if they were ever going to this is the movie to do it with because I NEED more
SO, when I was watching this, for the first time, I paused and went to IMDB to try and look up one of the voice actors, and found a little Easter egg. The Lord Protector, is only listed as that in the movie credits, but online, it confirmed he was Oliver Cromwell. And as for the whole, "Work is prayer", they were Puritans. Some of, if not THE, most strict narrow-minded Christian groups. They, were widely disliked across Europe because of their views, and that they were, generally, unpleasant neighbors. They were often forced out of cities and even countries, and would even be prevented from entering some countries.
I’m glad you liked the film, I hope you’re able to watch the others. I think Breadwinner and Song of the Sea are still on Netflix US, but maybe Secret of Kells is available somewhere to rent. What was your favorite part of Wolfwalkers? 😄
I watch it 7 times in 3 days, I really enjoy it, this animation is very nice because animation are supposed to teach u somethink u didnt know, like wow there was that bad guy, that city really exist and other stuff like that. Nice video, for someparts of that video the camera was too big, so I couldnt see what is happening. Anyway, grate video, grate talking about it, I just love it. Thanks again for this amazing video.
If you really liked this movie there is a similar show called wolfblood, where they transform into wolves. They live in a town called Stoneybridge in the UK and they have to keep their secret hidden. It's a good show if you wanna look into that I believe there is 5 seasons
I mean chopping the prosperous forests for farming is what happened in the US, lol. It's a very British thing to do. Also Wolfwalkers are basically the Irish equivalent of werewolves. They are made, or born from other wolfwalkers. Also Cromwell was such a good villain. He's not a completely terrible guy in the sense that despite threatening punishment on Robin and her dad he always gave them chances, and never even tried to kill them till he was directly threatened. He was as everyone was in the time, a misguided soul who happened to do bad things he felt was right in service of his God. But anyways, this is so much better than soul. It needs to win an oscar. Every movie cartoon saloon has put out has been absolutely a treat.
Of course, in real life, it was Oliver Cromwell was the one to cause the last of Ireland's wolves to be killed. So it is fitting for this. Also, being the first modern fascist dictator (according to historians) and one of Adolf Hitler's personal idols and examples and having being loathed entirely for his mass slaughterings of every man, woman and child in Drogheda and Wexford, he is the perfect villain for a story set in Ireland.
Don’t worry setting a forest on fire won’t destroy it for long in fact forest fires happen naturally it’s basically the forest shedding its skin and growing a new one.
Impossibly beautiful, as Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. Things of beauty do not really need awards; but awards may be very helpful to the creators of these things of beauty. Of course they should win.
What I know of this story there’s actually a book that kind of explains how the Wolfwalkers became to be I’m just going to get about a quick summary of it so basically Saint Patrick came to This town and they were having problems with the wolves so he chose a couple people to become Wolfwalkers to maintain peace between the humans and the wolf’s but when the Lord protector came he basically destroyed that and wanted to kill all the wolves and there was more Wolfwalkers but they Chyna got killed and there was only two left for now but yeah just wanted to explain that to you because they won’t tell that in this movie and I hope you have a wonderful day byeee ⭐️🤗👍❤️🐺
All of Cartoon Saloon films are beautiful, but I think Wolfwalkers has a more fully developed plot than 'Secret of Kells' or 'Song of the Sea' while 'Breadwinner', being based on a novel doesn't feel like it takes full advantage of the animated medium outside of the Elephant King segments. Showing possession in Irish can be strange at times, but 'mo chara' is indeed 'my friend'

Plus this film wasn't just at the time when the English ruled Ireland, it was set in the time of Cromwell, who was even more of a genocidal butcher to the Irish than other English rulers.
@@thevoid6596 yeah that makes sense
I've also watched all seasons but i find it kinda cringy sometimes😂
It's not actually from there originally. It is an original song from aurora's 2014 album 'all my demons greeting me as friends'.
@@jaspereq oh that's really cool to know! Thanks for telling me, I never knew!
There was a little reference to one of their first movies "Secret of Kells"when Maeve pulls out a crystal from Robyn's backpack(the Eye of Columkil from the movie.)
EDIT:This movie is can't be real.
AKA the Eye of Crom Cruach
Noticed it second time around!
I noticed it during my first viewing but didn't know what it was from!
The "work is prayer" thing is kinda a Protestant bastardization of the Catholic monastic Rule of Benedict: "ora et labora", or "work and prayer". "Ora et labora" expresses the need to balance work, prayer, and socialization in order to live a happy life.
I am so glad that you reacted to this I’ve been wanting to watch it in a long time
I definitely recommend!
This should win best animated movie. ‘Soul’ will win, but ‘Wolf Walkers’ is 100 times better IMO.
Yeah i don't really like soul
This is my favourite studio, every movie they make is so so great!
I love the long shots in certain scenes that look like one giant painting. God I LOVE THIS MOVIE!
5:00 Thanks for explaining that, now I can convince my friends to get interested in this story
This is amazing!
I really loved this movie, so I’m very happy to see it gain some more popularity
Why is this only on Apple TV? it needs to be spread around on Netflix, Amazon and DVD!
Robyn putting Mehb into the cage was very much like how her father Bill made her comply to the Lord Protector's rules. Heartbreaking.
i might have a suggestion for a show you could watch i find it an awsome show and i would love to see you're reaction to it
btw the shows name is 'The owl house'
Me and my family loved this movie so much and I love this movie introduced me to Aurora
I loved the song running with the wolves
This film won so many awards. It would be great for this film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. I would like it if it has other nominations like Best original score and others. I would be amazing if it wins.
Loved the reaction so happy I discovered your channel and Wolfwalkers. 😊
Has such a unique way to show diversity in the art style.
we need more movies like this
I always love the scene where Robyn leads the wolves.
15:28 Here it is also necessary to take into account the fact that as soon as she falls asleep in the town, she will either be killed or put in a cage.
I started seeing it as soon as I realized your reaction video about it and I'm glad I did. It was amazing and your reaction was great as usual💕
YES IT SHOULD WIN! Like bro every winner for "Best Animated Feature" are always 3D (Except "Spirited Away"). This'll be the first 2d animation winner in a long time, and this is the chance.
I like to think Robyn was taught falconry by her mother back in England when her mother was still alive and well.
Basically, from what I got from the movie, is you can both be born a Wolfwalker, but can also transfer being a Wolfwalker onto others with a bite.
You absolutely need to see The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. If you loved the animation in this, you'll be stunned by it in those films, which make up a non-story linking trilogy. There is also The Breadwinner, also very much worth watching, but completely unrelated to the Irish mythology of Kells, Sea and Wolfwalkers.
yeah, Sean Bean and Richard Armitage both have deep voices and similar accents, but for some reason I never made the connection until you mentioned it
Since you liked this movie. Highly recommend to other Irish animation movies: “The Secret of Kells,” “Song of the Sea,” and “The Breadwinner”
who said it most
adrien:shes just a friend
robins dad:ROBIN
I was litreally watching it today for the first time 😂 Perfect💖
6 "Aww"s and 3 "Mmm"s, indicating there were at least 9 emotionally enjoyable moments
(as opposed to emotionally saddening, intense, satisfying, etc. moments)
There are so many more
lets be honest all of cartoon saloons movies ARE AMAZING AND SO UNDERATED!!!!!
I watched first time too and it makes me really wanna be a wolf cause being a wolf is one of my dreams also wolves are my favorite animals😍🐺
Saw this movie when it came out, and im in love with it
I have a theory that Robyn was a witch before she became a wolfwalker.
I know it's not this studio's style to make sequels but if they were ever going to this is the movie to do it with because I NEED more
0:19 em Actually it's a movie
Yes this should get a academy award!!
unfortunately, it didn't. Soul won
I love Wolf Walkers sooo much! It’s my all time favorite movie. 😊
Song of the sea and wolf walkers are my 2 FaVoRiOuTe movies, they are really good
Wolfwalker is the best animated movie of 2020
I’m glad you liked the film, I hope you’re able to watch the others.
Hell yeah, Klaus didn't win, and I want a hand-drawn animated film to win an Oscar this time.
The animation style reminds me of the art style of The Book of Kells animated movie which is also irish based.
6:14. You can be born a Wolfwalker but you can also become
I got Apple TV just for this movie. Worth it.
I just love Maybe or idk how to spell it, eats her breath while being sad
Her name is Mebh (pronounced Mev)
Idk if you've reacted to it yet, but Song of The Sea is another amazing movie you should check out. It's the same animation studio, and it's also rooted in Celtic folklore, though the main focus if on selkies.
mo chara is indeed irish for "my friend"
Uhhhhggg this movie was so gorgeous!
That intro made her look like best jeanist
The dads name is BILL GOODFELLOW plus why dose Bill sound like he’s saying ramen instead of Robyn
You know aurora
I knew I recognized the chief he’s the bad guy in Pocahontas.
Wolfwalkers should get a sequel or a series on Apple TV
It was so much better than Soul. It deserves the Oscar!
I think i need to buy the dvd
This is probably my favorite movie. I'm so pissed that it didn't win at the Golden Globes.
I wanna be Irish so bad! Because Ireland and Irish people are so cool and their accents are awesome! I love my ethnicity and where I come from, but Irish stuff is so cool! I guess I could be half. Half Irish and half Puerto Rican. Hypothetically, of course.
1:39 I know where Kilkenny is, it's between the towns of Ohmigodthey and Youbastards.
YES YOU TOOK MY ADVICE! AND WATCHED IT! :D
Only reason I cared for this reaction is cause I know AURORA collaborated on the soundtrack
