    Crazy thing about Roy Benavidez was that he actually stepped on a landmine in his first tour, was told he would never be able to walk again, and walked out of the hospital a year later. Then he signed up for SF. What a legend.

      During his later MOH actions he even loaded up two dead NVA onto the second helicopter in hopes of gaining intel with holes throughout his body 😳 The stud jumped into an ambush to help save his friends with only an IFAK and a knife! Beyond Legend status for sure!

    The entire look of the character played by Tom Cruise was put together by Cruise. When Cruise pitched the look to Stiller he didn't get it at first. After Cruise was in full dress and danced Stiller said "ok now I get it". Tropic Thunder is absolutely in my top 7 movies of all time.

    When I first watched this movie, I legit thought they replaced Robert Downey Jr to make the joke that the actor was so engrossed in becoming the character. I actually thought it was a different actor until the second time I watched the movie, and it was late into the second time when it clicked and I was like “OHHHHHHHHH HOOOOLYYYY SHIT!” 😂 almost the same with Tom Cruise. My dad and I watched it in theaters and when he’s dancing at the end I was like, holy shit dad that’s Tom Cruise and he didn’t believe me until the credits proved it. Such an amazing movie

    Ben Stiller's gun was supposed to be an xm177e1 or e2. A short run SF weapon in VN but I seem to remember them using a front assembly that was too modern.

  • @ranger-1214
    @ranger-1214 Рік тому +19

    Good stuff, guys. Stiller's weapon appeared to be a CAR-15 submachine gun, or is replicating one, that dates back to about 1960 and was used in RVN; often with LRRPs. Based on the M-16, it originally was for armor guys (tankers) as a space-saver yet had lots of firepower to replace the old WWII-era .45 caliber M3 (usually call a Grease Gun because of its' appearance). It had an collapsible/extendible buttstock and with it closed the total length was under 30".

      There are pressure release fuses. They aren't used when setting up typical minefields (they'd explode due to shifting pressure from freezing/thawing in the winter) rather to set up boobytraps. They do however do what movies show, explode when the pressure comes off.
      They can be put under ammo crates or gas cans or, best of all another mine. Do that last one and the top mine holds down the trigger device the "normal" mine gets disarmed and moved out of the hole, the pressure comes of and the delayed pressure fusing device sets off its mine, and the one in your hands.

    You guys are awesome, love your commentary. In Vietnam, SF was issued the CAR-15 which in today's terms was an AR with a shortened barrel and telescopic stock. Essentially an SBR. Feel free to reference any of the LRRP books from that era👍

    I sort of interview with Ben still at once where he said he had the concept of this movie written for about 10 years and because of the success of night at the museum the movie studio let him make whatever movie he wanted so he made this one....

    The weapons in the movie are generally period correct. Collapsible stocks were used on the XM177 carbine, a shorter version of the M16. Later 700 series rifles were based on these earlier versions.

      Yeah, but it's not really a military movie per se. Parker and Longbaugh were tactically very sophisticated for a pair of criminal lowlifes. If they'd just established some back story...

    Aussie war movie staring a very young Mel Gibson, Gallipoli.

    Ben Stiller was usinh the Colt Commando/CAR15/XM177 and was used by spec ops in the Vietnam era and had a retractable stock. I think it only had two positions or something like that, but it was adjustable.
