@@AutumnJDiaz Saying "...unfortunately never killed a man " when talking about a cartoon hedgehog sounds so dang unhinged you reminds me of SEGA back in 2005.
My issue is that he should have been left handed (shown in Shadow the Hedgehog, everything done with the left or in left handed way, including little gestures and rest poses. Sonic 2006, body language and handling. One of the Sonic Free Riders, funky hoverboard stance. Shadow dark beginnings during the fight against the GUN soldier and during the rescue scene.)
Honestly, I think what G.U.N. did in the movie was even MORE screwed up than what was in the games. Taken directly from a Tumblr post, but… 1: They make it clear that the military was trying to kill Maria. 2: The change from it being a direct shot to an explosion was probably to keep the rating low, but they WERE pointing guns at that 12yo. 3: Walters said "Those are children" and the soldier responded "We have our orders". They were killing that 12yo whether it was via bullet or boom. 4: Just because the bullet missed doesn’t mean it wasn’t aimed for her and Shadow. It was clear that the military killed Maria. Also, it means that they were knowingly trying to kill TWO children! Which is honestly even worse than in the games when they genuinely thought Shadow was just a biological weapon! In this one, they knew he was just a goofy teenager and they went to kill him anyway.
yeah because murdering every innocent scientist and their ENTIRE families who resided in the ark alongside them isn't darker than them killing ONE child (which they already did in the main canon) you have no idea what you're talking about
??? In the games they were ordered to eliminate all personnel on the Space Colony ARK during their raid. They literally had a firing squad recording Gerald's death. After killing a sick girl. They knew about the project shadow before they decided to get rid of any evidence that would trace back to them. Shadow's story is way more impactful because of the irony of his very creation causing the death of his loved ones.
@@Still.the.best.2021 no it doesn’t. You’re in denial. Gerald’s madness in Sonic Adventure 2 alone is darker than anything the movie will ever throw at you. That and, do you know how explosions work? Her death was instantaneous. It’s a kid friendly movie, for god’s sake. Of course they wouldn’t show her burning to death. You’re stretching things to try and pretend the movie is darker when it isn’t.
Yeah, I agree. They somehow managed to thread that needle between staying true to the original and making adjustments for a new Hollywood universe. Somehow it works, and I like the way that it does.
I don't mind the changes, and they could still make Maria a sick child and have Shadow being researched for a cure, the only difference being that he was found and not created. The fact also that he was found inside a comet makes me think that he was sent there by the black arms, ala how saiyans in dbz are sent to planets to conquer them except in a comet and not a pod ship.
Part of why the Sonic CU works so well is the team's superb job of balancing nostalgia and new ideas. They put enough care in what stayed the same and what changed to successfully achieve a middle ground between respecting the source material and adding their own spin, which is something most adaptations (and origin story film) don't even get close at imo. Most deviate so much it's either bad, cliché-ridden fanfiction or In-Name-Only cash grabs with some Easter eggs or lazy gags thrown in for "nostalgia." Heck, I'd argue this also applies to most Disney sequels and third-party-made sequels to Don Bluth films too.
i think the climax would have been 10x better if the fight between gerald and eggman was taken more seriously. as it is, the movie undermines the best scene with eggman getting spanked by a giant robot hand. imagine if gerald made an announcement to the world, similar to his last words in sa2. Also, it would have strengthened the idea that gerald is manipulating eggman by being goofy for most of the movie
I think that it was 10x better because gerald and eggman were that goofy specially since they are family and extremely egocentric. They are not fighters, they are creators so it only makes sense that they fight via creating cursed things to fight (they could realistically just nuked each other and end it with one interaction but they are not that dumb).
It bothered me how the moon getting cut in half was turned into a literal joke. Seriously, why does nobody mention that? I thought the moon getting zapped was supposed to be a big deal, but not a single character acknowledges it afterwards and they don't follow up on it!
In terms of censorship, I think it did a fine job of balancing the need to stay loyal to the original material and adjusting to a movie audience and more importantly, a brand-new children's audience. The usage of "guns" in the movie was fine, albeit not so realistic since they're energy guns and not bullet-firing guns. The story surrounding Maria was fine, and I'm impressed at how they were able to re-write the backstory to fit this universe perfectly. Honestly, looking back on the decision to leave Rouge out of this one, it was probably a good call. Not only was she optional to the plot, but she was also a major "distraction" to the young boys who grew up seeing her in the original game. We need to bring in Amy and Cream before we decide to bring Rouge along, if they ever do. Amy and Cream would at least set the positive example forward first before we dig into the morally-grey design and personality of Rouge. And before you pitchfork me about morally-grey Shadow, yes I know he's a bit of a villain/antihero, but he has a sympathetic backstory. Rouge does not.
@@Ryker.RevixVT There's a difference between a character using a real weapon, and made-up, family friendly one. The latter shows that the filmmakers are afraid of real stakes
In this universe, Robotnik was an orphan. He says so in the first movie. And they stick to it in this movie. At the same time, they seem to retcon GUN as the 2nd movie says that it was recently created after the events of the first movie and in this one, it is shown that they were around for over 50 years.
@jakubgodyn7413 it was a bit of a retcon. I saw the Knuckles miniseries. "The Buyer" says that G.U.N. was "called something else when I worked there". Now I'm curious about what it was called 50 years ago.
I heard that GUN was retconned in the Knuckles show to just being a rebranding of a secret goverment agency. As for Eggman being an orphan i assume he became one not by being abandoned at birth but maybe his parents die while he was young or a baby.
Having him at least try to shoot Maria and missing is a great change, keeps things PG and we still got to her death. Only thing that's weird is how a 60 year old man survived that big of an explosion, but I don't mind it too much
If I was a betting man (and I am, it's a serious problem), my guess is that they might start dabbling with some of the other threats from Sonic since Robotnik got his send-off. The Black Arms seem like a good choice to bring in as the next possibly overarching threat after Metal Sonic along with Black Doom. Chaos seems more like something to save for kinda the tail end given his nature.
I was honestly expecting the credits scene to be related to the Black Arms, since it would make sense if they want to bring back Shadow and also show how he's progressed since the end of the 3rd movie, though I guess it would make it a Shadow focused movie right after the other
@@Dankboi68 You know, honestly? I think Stone could work, but I don't want them to have him be a full Robotnik 2.0 either. Maybe draw some influence from Dr Starline in how he acts. Namely he's smart [it's outright stated in a comic that Stone IS smart, just not as smart as Robotnik], he admires the hell out of Robotnik but he's also a different kind of threat and a bit less theatrical then the good Doctor. Give him a chance to grow into his own, maybe initially people underestimate him until they realize "Oh yeah, this guy's still a villain and without Eggman to bounce off of he has a chance to grow into a serious threat as he realizes his potential".
I watched Sonic 3 and I swear I've saw nothing but Sonic on my recommended for the past day or two, Sonic so peak... I'm familiar with how Maria did die, but I don't think they would've gotten away with showing a child getting turned into a honey comb on screen 💀
The thing is, G.U.N. acts like they're sympathetic, but they're not. The movies tell you as much, everytime they're on screen. They destroy, they reject responsability for their actions and they *act like they have no other choice*. They're portrayed as worse than Eggman because they even have the nerve of presenting themselves as righteous, while Eggman is well aware he's evil. They were the ones who asked for the eclipse cannon too. Even the "nicest" of G.U.N. member is unhinged. From side characters to main characters, they're all portrayed as villainous in either a "funny" or unfunny way.
Well, he did use the gun, it just wasn't an actual gun. It was a totally nonviolent and kid-friendly laser gun that shoots hyper-concentrated bolts of energy that would sear a hole right through a normal person and cook their insides. Completely different.
One thing I've found really interesting about this movie is how they adapted Shadow's origin. It would have painted Gerald in a more sympathetic light if Shadow were his brainchild like in the games, but I think his relationship with Shadow being more cold and professional really works out for this movie, as Gerald has no emotional attachment to Shadow and thus, leaves no room for Shadow to reach out to him and try to change his mind. Also, I couldn't help but notice that Shadow fell onto Earth on a mini version of the Black Comet. I know the movies will probably never address his ties to the Black Arms, but it's a neat reference to his alien origins in the games
The only problem I saw in this movie was: Why in the living hell was a literal CHILD in a MILITARY BASE??? It makes sense in the games’ lore bc it’s in the ARK and its low gravity helps to treat her NIDS, but this military base wasn’t in space and Maria wasn’t sick, and if it’s an orphan situation then she could have lived with her uncle, as in Eggman’s dad, instead of a military base where the government researched living weapons
Lab isn't in space in the movies And I don't believe Eggman's parents were exactly around, assuming Ivo to be a similar age to Maria as seems to be the case in the games
I _am_ interested in seeing how Amy is treated (she's only ever really had "loves Sonic" as a character trait in the games, minus the games where she just... didn't have any), so it would be nice to see something more fleshed out. But what I'm really interested in is Metal Sonic. Who made him since Eggman is gone? Why is he going after Sonic like this? And most importantly, why are there _dozens_ of him?! That's only ever happened in alternate continuities, and every time it's been a major arc in them!
theoretical options: 1 - Eggman created it before participating in Sonic 3 as a form of plan B, in case Eggman is left out for a while and Metal Sonic takes his place, just like IDW comics. 2 - Agent Stone created him 3 - GUN created them using Eggman's plans or not, since in the film GUN's new lead makes it clear that he doesn't like Sonic very much 4 - Another villain from an old Sonic franchise comic or a completely new villain
@@Still.the.best.2021 My ideas were either Stone or GUN as well, though the fact that there's so many of them makes me lean more towards GUN planning on having a mass-producible weapon that they can use for whatever they want. Plus, Stone said he had enough of superpowered hedgehogs (or something to that effect), so maybe he'd be less likely to make one himself :p
13:18 Just want to throw it out there, I've been playing the games since I was 9 and I've always been a fan of Amy. I'm super hyped to have her and Metal Sonic. Trust me, lots of male fans love Amy.
as someone who has genuinely never seen a single piece of media about sonic (unless you count sonic.exe game videos LMAO???) this does make me want to watch them.
It was as good as a representation of Shadow Paramount could get with an American PG rating. Although if Shadow ever makes a return, I think Paramount will have enough courage to make a PG-13 representation like Sonic 3 was rumoured to be.
A Pg13 sonic movie, as cool as it would be, would never make any money for paramount, cuz you still gotta remember, the main audience of these movies are kids
Gerald was pretty good in the movie but I feel like it would be much better if they showed that he was a good person before Maria's death like the games. That he wasn't an over-the-top cartoonishly evil villain, that didn't meant any harm and wanted to help Maria and humanity. I think that's what made him such an impactful character in SA2
@@Still.the.best.2021 We never see how Gerald was like before Maria's death so the average viewer who doesn't know about the games' context may see him as just an evil guy
@Persona2-hw3ch Not considering what he says after "You're not Maria", and also because we're going to finish more of Shadow in the next productions, so there's a lot that can still be explored, in the same way in games where if we just follow the story throughout the gameplay, there will be things that are only explained in the sequences, or in the manuals, which in the film here, would be equivalent to Novels
I really liked this film and saw it 3 times and I’m 41 years old. I would say the film is more towards families than just kids only. When I went to a screening here in the UK just before Christmas it was 50% casual audience that they were after and 50% hardcore fans that they were also after. It was electric and so much fun. Each time I watched the cinema which was 3 times to me it got better each time. To me in my heart the best trilogy of all time until Spring 2027 when the fourth film comes out. Loved your review by the way.
I've been feeling the same way about that. I never wanted him to use any guns in this movie, so I've thought of it as a relief that when he did, it was only for a few minutes, that he wasn't using a bullet gun and that he never used another one after that motorcycle chase scene. PS, Don't think that he'll be holding any in future Sonic games because last year SEGA announced that Shadow won't be using guns anymore. Him having one and that motorcycle was just 2 short references to his 2005 game in that third movie.
@ good because Shadows suppose to be the quiet introverted anti hero that protects humanity and the earth along side his friend and Allies the one we all love I determine my own destiny but other than the gun in the 3rd movie I think they nailed shadows character instead of making him an edgelord
That bit you mentioned about the target audience and the lack of female characters in action media (in general) was something that I've felt for a long time, and one of the reasons i felt ashamed of liking sonic when i was younger, just like you I actually cheered on the theater when I saw Amy Rose 😂 I have high hopes she is gonna play a major role in the next movie.
This was a thoughtful video, thanks for sharing your perspective. I really dug the movie and I'm thrilled that it seems like a new generation of kids are being introduced to these characters and their themes through the movies.
I'm so sorry but i need to critique your video. Please turn down the volume of music you used, I really like the points you gave and the perspective you had for the film but I don't want rock music to cover your voice to hide your thoughts about the film. also, my left headphone is louder than my right, so either the Microphone was setup wrong or misplaced while speaking. If your using Audacity you can easily fix it. (unless you've only got 1 earbud) Otherwise it's a good video, and i hope you're able to have fun making videos about the things you like. Keep being awesome!
The only voice blocking problem that I've had while watching this video is when that "Escape From The City" remix was playing because since that wasn't an instrumental version like all the other Sonic songs that were used as interesting background music in this video are, the lyrics that played made it hard for me try to hear what this UA-camr was saying at that part.
I don't mind Maria's demise being changed, my problem is how GUN was changed. Maria's death being an accident completely ignores the anti-military, anti-police message of SA2.
on the contrary, I thought they still made it very much, very clearly GUN's fault. The guy who shot at those canisters was given a direct order not to shoot, and he did anyway. She didn't get directly shot, but they were still clearly responsible for her death
When you think about it they censored a lot, shadow has a laser gun, no biolizard probably because of budget but it could also be censoring, no Gerald execution, no actual guns, Maria doesn’t have illness, shadow never says damn
Because when you think about it, in sa2 they killed the biolizard so they probably wouldn’t show that, I think it’s lame like I don’t see why kids can’t handle guns
If we are to consider some actual deaths, it doesn't seem to be censorship, just a way of showing it in a different way, and the weapons not being bullets doesn't make any difference to me, they are still weapons, and they are lethal, especially for those who grew up watching Star wars or something like that showing people dying brutally from weapons like that, and some other things like Maria's disease is more explored after adventure 2, like, okay, I know it's explained in the adventure 2 manuals but still, it's not presented in history, then it could be Although they are following the same line in the films, perhaps we will even see the biolizard in future productions, Even Gerald's execution is not shown in the game, it is only mentioned
@ice_popzz6623 Tbh, they didn't totally leave the Biolizard out of Sonic 3. It does appear in that movie but briefly because Paramount referenced that Ultimate Lifeform prototype from SA2 during a flashback scene that shows Shadow and Maria watching TV together and an image of that giant reptile is shown on the screen that those 2 characters are both looking at.
*cough cough* some might call what I'm about to say a spoiler, but really this is almost common knowledge. Since they're making Sonic Movie 4, Ivo Robotnik is NOT dead. The Filmmakers said sometime around Sonic Movie 2 how they'll only make Sonic Movies if Jim Carrey is in them
Hard disagree on Robotnik being funny. Every time Gerald and Ivo were on screen I was cringing into oblivion. The theater was filled to the brim with small children and not a single one laughed during the Robotnik scenes. The painfully unfunny cringy scenes with the two Robotniks is the reason I only saw the movie once.
As a 36-year-old male Sonic fan (37 next month. Sad, I know.), I love Amy. She makes this franchise more exciting than it would be if she wasn't in it.
@Rishi123456789 OH yeah I agree and I understand this now as an adult but as a KID I think I didn't like Amy because she liked Sonic and Sonic was my favourite. As a kid I was very possessive of my favourite things. (As an example as a kid I hated my uncles gf cuz he was MY uncle and they couldn't have him XDDDD I was weird like that ^^;) So now I'm older I'm hoping to like Amy this time around. (Plus shadows now my fave sooooo XDDDD) And Ngl I watched prime only the other day ( my bro and I binged the whole thing) and I liked all of Amy's shattervers versions ^-^
I understand why the Sonic movies are seen as good. The 3rd movie did handle the characters better than many Sonic games, and you nailed pretty much all the places where this movie rocked on the head. However, I have to point out one of the flaws that all of the movies had. They don't balance all the characters well. What I mean is that they show all the emotional parts of the characters but none of the other parts. We've barely seen Sonic make a snarky joke or Knuckles' gentle side. Thankfully these are the only two characters that really suffer from it. As you said, Robotnik has been shown as comic relief, a formidable villain, and an emotional person. And they're also good at showing that even though Tails gets scared sometimes, he can still be a very confident person. But I feel like they haven't fully done Sonic and Knuckles justice. In the 90s, Sonic was a character that usually tried to hide his pain with optimism and his fear with anger. But that's all gone in the Sonic movies. Sonic's characterization in the movies has its moments, but am I the only one who thinks its very compelling when a character's hidden doubts and emotions are unearthed as they realize the truth? And because they don't show Knuckles' gentle side, I feel like it makes Sonic and Knuckles' relationship not as cool. I'm not sure if this is a clear way of saying it, but Sonic is Knuckles' friend, but Knuckles isn't Sonic's friend. We don't really see Knuckles picking Sonic up when he's down. In older Sonic media, they consistently show the gentle side of Knuckles by having him reach out his hand to people. In SA2, he grabs Rouge's hand to save her from falling, and in Sonic Origins, if I'm not mistaken, Knuckles offers his hand when Sonic has fallen on the ground. It would be so cool to see Knuckles do something like this in a Sonic movie! Hopefully in the 4th movie 🥺
Awesome comment. I can definitely see where you are coming from on the characterization. At least for Knuckles, I did get a little bit of the "softer" feeling of him when he backed down and cooled off during their argument. It's not much, very subtle, but i saw a nice maturity and trust there. It's definitely not much, though.
I personally saw the “hiding fear with anger” and “hiding pain with optimism” parts of Sonic in the movie- only reversed. At his most painful, he became incredibly angry, enough to go get the Master Emerald, which in this universe, is a HUGE deal. As for his optimism, he sure has a lot of it during scary, end-of-the-world fights. Also, while he wasn’t quipping every 2 seconds, there were still plenty of stuff, like calling Shadow “hot topic” and commenting on his highlights, as well as messing with Eggman (only seen the movie once so I don’t remember everything!). I thought it was fairly well-done for being the type of movie it was.
@pizzatime3752 Well, it was well done, considering the first Sonic movie came out at a time when Sonic's character was at its crappiest in the games. I appreciate that they made him a good character, even though he isn't exactly accurate to older Sonic media.
When I watched it I noticed they went to Tokyo and visit a “Chao Garden” as if it was a restaurant with a stage show I know it’s a reference to Adventure 2 in which the whole movie is loosely based on. What are Chaos in this world? Sonic tails and knuckles have probably never seen a Chao and as far as I know chaos is still asleep in the master emerald Also am I confused or am I just now realizing Chao and Chaos Is the same word. And that someone would probably be calling the little fairy creatures chaos and there not wrong
Its honestly a huge cop out having the gun shoot Star Wars style blaster bolts instead of ACTUAL BULLETS... And they didn't shoot Maria directly either. Why is this movie trying to make the story more "kid friendly" than the actual game? (y'know, the game made for KIDS?). There's always a catch... As great as this movie is, it just feels like they didn't take Shadow's story as seriously as they should have. If kids could handle it back in 2001 they should be able to handle it on the big screen. Children can handle deeper and darker themes than people give them credit for, and I don't understand why our society hasn't figured it out yet. :/ Also, somewhat unrelated, but why did they write out Maria's illness? Any disability representation she once had is gone, and she's just a "normal" girl. It just lessens the emotional impact, and it kinda bothers me.
Sonic is actually made for everyone, not just kids. Naoto Ohshima (via the 2018 post mortem gaming panel) and Al Nilsen (via an episode of the Sega Ages podcast) said so.
@obd9660 Children/teenagers were the main target demographic for video games and Sonic was clearly going for the "too cool for school" appeal that kids tended to like (ESPECIALLY at the time Sonic Adventure was made)... To say that it isn't aimed towards younger audiences is simply copium (no offense). But either way, you shouldn't need to try and defend it. It can be "made for kids" while still being enjoyed by adults alike... And if we're being honest, any kids product that DOESN'T appeal to adults as well is a failure, and isn't fit for children either (Kids don't deserve brainless slop). Sonic can be enjoyed by EVERYONE, but is still perfectly palatable for younger audiences. It is not made for _adults,_ but it can still be enjoyed by them. That's part of what makes it so great.
@@lasercraft32 Excuse me? I never said Sonic was made just for adults, nor did I say it wasn't suitable for kids. I said it was for EVERYONE, which obviously includes both children AND adults. I feel like you either misunderstood at best, or twisted my words at worst. Naoto (who designed Sonic) and Al (Sega's marketing director) have been professionally involved with Sonic since day one. You may argue against the theories and opinions of fans, but you CAN'T argue against statements made by the creators/owners, otherwise you're fighting a battle you'll never win in a million years. I mean surely everything creators say about their creation should be taken as gospel, right? As for the Adventure part, I heard somewhere that Sonic was redesigned in that game to game to appeal to older audiences. Finally, my mother and uncle told me video games in general were designed with adults in mind since day, so hearing in things like PlayStation documentaries that video games were seen as "children's toys" is quite revisionist history for my taste.
@@lasercraft32 Serious question: How do you read "Sonic is actually made for everyone, not just kids" and interpret that as me saying "Sonic is for adults, and therefore, unsuitable for kids."? And again, the CREATORS said this, not me. Everyone includes kids and adults, how is that hard to understand? Seriously?
Three things I really didn't like was... #1 the scene where the humans broke into a high security military base with _power_ of "angry fat black woman is angry and hungry". Really didn't like that and wish they would have had them like subdue someone and steal their cloaths or face or something. #2 I HATED the Robotnik vs. Eggman fight being so goofy. They're the villains of the story, they absolutely should have had more menace or seriousness at least in their fight scene. But instead we just got another slapstick gag skit with "jim carrie" rather than the characters. Very disappointing approach. No.. actually, just very disappointing in general. Especially after the strong words that came right before like "You're no Maria...." And when Eggman thought he was about to be sucked out into the vacuum of space he just cracked a joke. #3 Another thing is, I almost felt uncomfortable with how close Jim Carrie was with.... uh... himself. It was a bit off-putting. Not a huge deal, but still. It detracted from the movie.
This would kind of lose the essence of what they really are, both in games, comics, animations, series, and now movies, unless you want them to become the Eggmen from classic cartoons and comics where they are absurdly serious and intimidating, which isn't bad, but I don't think it fits with them here at all, and I even believe that in games it would be the same thing, like the discussion between the classic Eggman and the modern Eggman in Sonic Generations
@Still.the.best.2021 I think you have a severe misconception. I don't mean change their whole characters to be sultry edge-lords... I mean when there's real stakes involved, then the characters should thus take it seriously. Regardless of circumstances. Otherwise you know that there's not actually any real stakes to anything. Because it's obviously part of a joke. How can I care about Eggman hanging for his life when I know they aren't going to kill a big named character off screen for a joke? And how am I supposed to care about the characters' emotions or fight, if even those characters don't take it seriously either? It's tone-death to a fundamental of storytelling.
I think censoring is the wrong word here in an adaptation. But while you bring up interesting points i think its difficult to engage with the video seriously when off the bat you're mistaken about usage of a gun/firearm right at the start, like your thesis just backfires a little from the jump.
Shadows film backstory really takes away a lot of his themes with identity imo. He didnt need to be an alien, he was created by gerald and him being a creation to be the ultimate life form... Its a part of his identity struggle in the games. Also... Nothing about shadows promise to maria. That was a big disappointment. It just felt weird that they changed some of this stuff.
This part is just a nitpick for me: sonic said the "talk about cheap flights" line and you DONT GET TO SAY THAT UNLESS YOURE GONNA RIP A PANEL OFF OF THE HELICOPTER AND SKATE THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO
Shadow had a gun during the video game series since his debut in 2001 since the Dreamcast released Sonic Adventure 2 however in the movie, he used it to shoot at Sonic if only for a few moments just to throw it away shortly after all within about five seconds of the chase scene between Sonic and Shadow. Sonic 3 is peak video game cinema and hands down the best of the trilogy! #Sonic3 #GottaGoFast #LiveAndLearn #TheFastestThingAlive #TheNeedForSpeed 🥚🦔💙🧡❤️🖤
I see a lot of people giving love for the movie, and that's great! I loved the movie, too, but I have to say it with a MASSIVE Asterisk, because out of the 3, it was the *weakest* and fundamentally has the most problems. And given that Shadow ties as my favourite character with Whisper from IDW, it's really sad to say that. I wish I loved this movie as much as everyone else did. Fundamentally, I think this stems from the main problem that the Sonic Movies are *NOT* the game canon, and I genuinely *liked* the changes they made for the western film adaptations, because it was a fresh start for Sonic. They had their own identity and their own setting and their own version of Sonic to portray that was more closely related to the happy-go-lucky mascot that SEGA likes to showboat him as. I had my issues with the first film, don't get me wrong (Yes, his humour is cringey and didn't land on me all that often; yes, I don't think Tom being a cop was a particularly *good* decision given Sonic as a character isn't the most law abiding of citizens and his role could have been just as well suited as a park ranger or something; yes, I think the fact that the way they set up the conflict between the owls and the echidnas has some vaguely concerning racial subtext that might be problematic if you squint, even if that wasn't paramount's intention. Owl mom genocided like 20 echidna in that one stand after her people's legends spoke of the echidna's overwhelming might capable of taking on armies to justify taking the emeralds from them--Like.... *think about it for a few seconds*) In the first movie, they talk about GUN being *established* because of the events related to sonic movie one. The second movie credits scene has GUN surprised by their finding of Project Shadow, a project that came from *them, BEFORE* they were even established. I think, anyone who saw the third movie, can already see all the issues just from this, and that's not including the fact that GUN's motivations didn't make any sense in the third film *at all.* Why did they even give the order to try and get shadow? they were farming him for power anyways, they didn't have a reason to escalate, because *nothing happened to result in the sudden escalation.* So they decided to kill Robotnik and Maria... why? There's no good reason for their orders. Plus, why even have commander Walter there to try and stop them from shooting at the kids anyways? Was it to make us sympathize with him? with the *Military?* They issue this now presents is that this scene was shown in a flashback, which means Shadow *remembers* Walters doing this, which then makes his whole frustration with him make almost no fucking sense outside of the fact that later GUN sealed him in cryo. Which, once again, Walters gave this order, how the *fuck* is he surprised with the discovery of Project Shadow here-- This then leads into his whole almost killing Tom bit not make any fucking sense, too. It felt like a justification for the scene to happen, not an organic mistaken identity moment because Shadow had almost no motivation to even go after Walters here. SPEAKING OF, What was the Second Commander's motivation, even? Why did she say a line that implied they were falling into a trap of her own machinations? why the fuck did they imply that she wanted the keycard for... *something* and then later they just have her hand it off to Walters? Why did this all feel like a secondary plot that they accidentally left the pieces of after trimming the rest on the cutting room floor? This all felt like it was aiming for a different subplot that probably would have added like an extra hour to the movie, that they decided to keep pieces of just so they could have the cool fight in the gravity room. Did you notice that the Gravity pads don't work the way they were described to when Knuckles floats right *over* a damn red pad? Shit ripped me right out of my suspension of disbelief. WHY DOES THE SECOND COMMANDER EVEN SECOND GUESS THAT WALTERS ISN'T DEAD?! THAT'S NOT HOW ANY FUCKING MILITARY OR PARAMILITARY SERVICE EVEN WORKS-- Other issues at hand by diminishing Maria's agency to sacrifice herself for Shadow in the end, which weakens the thematic parallels with Sonic and Shadow. I agree that the choice to remove her terminal disease was a good one, given they had no space to make her a character *and* justify the disease outside of just making Shadow's backstory more miserable, but this is just like the "Squint and it looks a bit fucked" Echidna Genocide moment where now we lose out on representation for a certain subsection of people. I get why they didn't have her get shot down by GUN outright; this movie was made for a western audience, a west which is particularly prone to gun violence, and they wanted to keep the rating down, but they didn't even explore the idea that it was *Shadow's energy* that killed Maria in the end. It was in their weapons, it was in the barrel that exploded; they weren't even that subtle with his suicidal ideation in the final act, i feel like they could have had more exploration here. For a Shadow movie, Shadow isn't even all that prevalent in it. Outside of his main scenes he has like maybe 3 or 4 lines. I get it that Keanu Reeves is expensive, but their choice to double Jim Carrey for Gerald was questionable and, frankly, I think heavily unnecessary and DOUBLED the price they paid to get Keanu on. The fact that Gerald and Ivo had so many batshit moments together and out of the corner of the screen you just see Shadow standing there doing nothing is like.... Bro, why wasn't that played for laughs? Shadow is a great straightman to both of the batshit Robotniks--Hell, the joke that Gerald says in the GUN headquarters (BTW, interesting they're trying to keep it separated thematically from the US by having them stationed in London, isn't it) about a woman in the military was so out of pocket that it made me laugh out loud in theaters. Old man humor would have been great to sprinkle in more often, to show the sheer difference in mentality from Ivo and the rest of the cast. Hell, even having Shadow be the only one to get those jokes would have better characterized him, fuck, *anything* to have made him more relevant to the plot other than just being there to be cool. Gerald's whole existence causes at least 3 other minor problems, but this comment is long enough. There are so many foundational issues in this movie that stem from the fact that they were *too afraid* to stray too far from the game's canon, unlike the way they wholeheartedly embraced their cringe little blue rat in the first movie, that made fans and critics happy... but made the movie kinda bad, in all honesty. I'm happy people are enjoying this film series, and Im just as excited for the next one, but the problems I had with this movie are just *not* being talked about literally anywhere and I feel like I'm yelling into a void. I hope that, when the hype dies down, I'll see someone make a review for the movie that will actually dissect it and discuss it in a way it deserves to be. It's a fun movie, but I stand on the hill on my own saying that it's not a *good* movie by any stretch of the means. And it's okay to like it despite that.
This is a family movie... second this movie is based on SA2 and Shadow the hedgehog the Game... Why are you tripping that Shadow having a gun. Instead of ranting on youtube to get views. Direct your complaints to the original creator, Sega, and movie devs. The movie is peak and also cannon.
He did use the gun at Sonic during the chase through Tokyo. He never uses it again for the rest of the film, but I digress.
You’re right, I forgot. He unfortunately never killed a man which was how I was measuring
@@AutumnJDiaz Saying "...unfortunately never killed a man " when talking about a cartoon hedgehog sounds so dang unhinged you reminds me of SEGA back in 2005.
Shadow didn’t really need a gun, plus he never had one in SA2. That was only in the Shadow The Hedgehog video game. Which I despise.
Shadow dropped the gun during the chase with Sonic. He didn't have the chance to recover it or his motorcycle in Tokyo.
The moment you realize Wade freaking Whipple held a real glock and almost killed Ivo Robotnik in the first movie...
THATS WHY HES THE GOAT… THE GOOOOOOOOOOOAT
Yeah, then they had to censor all the guns with taser guns 😂.
Honestly, I think what G.U.N. did in the movie was even MORE screwed up than what was in the games. Taken directly from a Tumblr post, but…
1: They make it clear that the military was trying to kill Maria.
In this one, they knew he was just a goofy teenager and they went to kill him anyway.
yeah because murdering every innocent scientist and their ENTIRE families who resided in the ark alongside them isn't darker than them killing ONE child (which they already did in the main canon)
you have no idea what you're talking about
@@BlurBlizzard yet Abe was able to make it to presidency and didn't immediately take revenge on guns responsible personel is criminal.
The movie's kind of continues to be a bit heavier, especially considering that Maria was charred in this movie.
I love SA2, but I really didn’t mind the changes to Shadow’s lore, in fact I think it worked for a Hollywood adaptation.
@THEonlyAEON Yeah! The first thing I thought about when seeing that "meteor" was that it looked like the Black Comet!
Wow, what a missed opportunity.
That’s true
It bothered me how the moon getting cut in half was turned into a literal joke. Seriously, why does nobody mention that? I thought the moon getting zapped was supposed to be a big deal, but not a single character acknowledges it afterwards and they don't follow up on it!
@@duduvec5971 I would not describe Jim Carrey's goofy antics to improve the movie in any way shape or form, let alone "10x better." :/
EXCELLENT WORK. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
He did use the gun during the chase tho? Sonic just kicks it out of his hand
It wasn't a gun tho, it was a blaster....A blaster that goes "pew-pew"...Which sucks
@@almas4663 are we really arguing semantics. Both things kill. Get over it.
@Amsel_616 I think they've said something like "when I joined, it had a different nane" now that you're mentioned it.
Important note this is movie canon retcon this movie is seperate from games and comics and loosely follows cannon and does not dictate canon
@aprettycoolname4839 That's pretty obvious. Pretty much every medium has its own canon. Games, shows, comics etc
He did use the gun tho, he just missed
Having him at least try to shoot Maria and missing is a great change, keeps things PG and we still got to her death. Only thing that's weird is how a 60 year old man survived that big of an explosion, but I don't mind it too much
@@jonathanhargraves2241 why would Shadow want to kill Maria? He literally tries to blow up the world because she died.

@@SHADOWB127 My bad
If I was a betting man (and I am, it's a serious problem), my guess is that they might start dabbling with some of the other threats from Sonic since Robotnik got his send-off.
The Black Arms seem like a good choice to bring in as the next possibly overarching threat after Metal Sonic along with Black Doom.
Chaos seems more like something to save for kinda the tail end given his nature.
GIVE IT UP FOR MY BOY STONE [Insert Agent Stone fan cam]
I was honestly expecting the credits scene to be related to the Black Arms, since it would make sense if they want to bring back Shadow and also show how he's progressed since the end of the 3rd movie, though I guess it would make it a Shadow focused movie right after the other
I want to see Mephiles
I read that in Mr satan's voice
Knowing how it was going to end, 'The light shines, even though the star is gone' hit really hard right away.
Shadow did use a gun! During the bike chase, he fires a few blasts from that pulse pistol at Sonic before it's knocked out of his hand.
According to a bg soldier, her grandfather takes her anywhere with him-- including his lab in space apparently
……..
Bring your child to work month?
For all we know, maybe she was just there on weekends!
@davidmandel They got rid of Maria's disability :/
Lab isn't in space in the movies
And I don't believe Eggman's parents were exactly around, assuming Ivo to be a similar age to Maria as seems to be the case in the games
That's only ever happened in alternate continuities, and every time it's been a major arc in them!
theoretical options:
1 - Eggman created it before participating in Sonic 3 as a form of plan B, in case Eggman is left out for a while and Metal Sonic takes his place, just like IDW comics.
2 - Agent Stone created him
3 - GUN created them using Eggman's plans or not, since in the film GUN's new lead makes it clear that he doesn't like Sonic very much
4 - Another villain from an old Sonic franchise comic or a completely new villain
5 - Sonic somehow got transported to the future where eggman (who obviously survived) created them to try to replace sonic but they went rogue 😛
Shadow could be little bit John Wicked because of Keanu Reeves.
Therefore he can use guns in the future to some extent.
13:18 Just want to throw it out there, I've been playing the games since I was 9 and I've always been a fan of Amy. I'm super hyped to have her and Metal Sonic. Trust me, lots of male fans love Amy.

You should I love them
the funny hedgehog is cool i promise
It was as good as a representation of Shadow Paramount could get with an American PG rating. Although if Shadow ever makes a return, I think Paramount will have enough courage to make a PG-13 representation like Sonic 3 was rumoured to be.
A Pg13 sonic movie, as cool as it would be, would never make any money for paramount, cuz you still gotta remember, the main audience of these movies are kids
As a little nod we can see biolizard in the movie that maria and shadow were watching
The fact that Shadow who's voiced by Keanu never says "I'm gonna need a gun" was a waste.
But don't Gerald's flashbacks and plots already hint at that? Like, after Maria left he stopped being a good person?
Thank you!
If I recall correctly, Shadow uses the gun to shoot at sonic. It's just laser blasts, but he still shoots a gun.
Shadow is basically an all ages version of John Wick in that movie.
It was already weird enough giving shadow a gun knowing his character I’m glad they limited it shadow honestly doesn’t need it in the first place
@@howdoknow In Shadow Generations he was acting like that better version of himself too and I've been glad about that.

Thanks so much! I’m an English major, it’s what I do. I’m really happy you enjoy it!

(unless you've only got 1 earbud)
Otherwise it's a good video, and i hope you're able to have fun making videos about the things you like. Keep being awesome!
Sorry I made this in a weekend and didn’t have my microphone. Thanks for your comment!
nah the music is at a good volume imo you can bear everything clearly
Maria's death was not an accident, the soldiers were told to shoot. The only accident was the explosion, not Maria's death.
Ironically, Eggman says "damn you, autocorrect " in Sonic 3, but doesn't swear even ONCE in Shadow the Hedgehog

The Filmmakers said sometime around Sonic Movie 2 how they'll only make Sonic Movies if Jim Carrey is in them
He used a Blaster pistol, which is probably better than an actual firearm when it comes to showing weapons to younger children
Finally saw the movie with my sister it's really good movie for any who hasn't seen the movie go see it if you love shadow
Even they censor it but we are still seeing it in reality
Hard disagree on Robotnik being funny. Every time Gerald and Ivo were on screen I was cringing into oblivion. The theater was filled to the brim with small children and not a single one laughed during the Robotnik scenes. The painfully unfunny cringy scenes with the two Robotniks is the reason I only saw the movie once.
as a girl growing up I didn't like amy but i'm hoping to like her in sonic 4
(Plus shadows now my fave sooooo XDDDD)
And Ngl I watched prime only the other day ( my bro and I binged the whole thing) and I liked all of Amy's shattervers versions ^-^
Kids get it. I knew when I was young. Experienced loss.. especially when your not in a crowd like most people putting on a fake personality.
@bloomins8088 I agree that part was my favorite part of Sonic 3.
Sonic tails and knuckles have probably never seen a Chao and as far as I know chaos is still asleep in the master emerald
Also am I confused or am I just now realizing Chao and Chaos Is the same word.
Also, somewhat unrelated, but why did they write out Maria's illness?

Excuse me?
@obd9660 Like I said... You DON'T need to try and defend it, as if saying its for kids is some horrendous offense... You missed the ENTIRE point. 🙄

Serious question:
How do you read "Sonic is actually made for everyone, not just kids" and interpret that as me saying "Sonic is for adults, and therefore, unsuitable for kids."?
@@devlinmcguire7543 regardless of whether he will actually die or not, that is not important, especially if you know the character better than most
I think censoring is the wrong word here in an adaptation. But while you bring up interesting points i think its difficult to engage with the video seriously when off the bat you're mistaken about usage of a gun/firearm right at the start, like your thesis just backfires a little from the jump.
Are you telling me pretzel lady wasn’t good enough! Jk jk I’m excited for Amy as well
Pretty sure all those gun soldiers shadow took down died he hit them at super speed in center mass
Great review
Love
Shadows film backstory really takes away a lot of his themes with identity imo. He didnt need to be an alien, he was created by gerald and him being a creation to be the ultimate life form... Its a part of his identity struggle in the games. Also... Nothing about shadows promise to maria. That was a big disappointment. It just felt weird that they changed some of this stuff.
It gives me vibes of "the producers thought kids are dumb"
This part is just a nitpick for me: sonic said the "talk about cheap flights" line and you DONT GET TO SAY THAT UNLESS YOURE GONNA RIP A PANEL OFF OF THE HELICOPTER AND SKATE THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO
Okay but Shadow is also an alien in the games
Shadow is canonically an alien in the games. He was made with alien DNA.
@@beck_gaming1243He only has Alien DNA, but he didn't come from space to Earth. He was created by people, that's the whole point.
If only Maria herself was well written, and not an obnoxious "relatable" brat, but they just had to make her extra unlikable
*think about it for a few seconds*)
In the first movie, they talk about GUN being *established* because of the events related to sonic movie one.
Which, once again, Walters gave this order, how the *fuck* is he surprised with the discovery of Project Shadow here--
This then leads into his whole almost killing Tom bit not make any fucking sense, too.
THAT'S NOT HOW ANY FUCKING MILITARY OR PARAMILITARY SERVICE EVEN WORKS--
Other issues at hand by diminishing Maria's agency to sacrifice herself for Shadow in the end, which weakens the thematic parallels with Sonic and Shadow.

It's not canon.
