Someone above said something about new wave but there was no new wave back then. But until i die i'll say that the Cars and Manfred Mann paved the road to new wave.
Exactly. The term "New Wave" became popular n the early '80's synonymous with MTV. The Cars were already rockin' in 1976 and were initially considered punk minimalists. Also the terms "art rock, rockabilly, power pop" were applied to them, but the Cars were defined by their own personal sound blend as early as 1977, before "new wave"...

I was 11 years young upon album release. Presently people say "you live in the past". What can I say, with a past like mine you'd wanna live in it too! Good songs! Good time!
I agree... I've always said that Elliot Easton was waaaay under appreciated... Ben Orr's base and vocals made the band in my mind and Greg Hawke's keyboard was razor sharp... Everyone appreciates Ricks vocals and lyrics.. but My personal favorite was always Ben. May he rest in peace. Boston was my Fav band in the late 70's before The Cars really caught on... I miss the music of that era!
There's so much going on in this song. Easton's slick guitar riffs take the lead. But man, Orr's bass line is killer here, not even to mention his crisp vocals. Robinson's drum work here is top notch too. And as always, Hawkes filles out the sounds with those keyboards. I guess Ric Ocasek's rhythm gutiar plays a part too, but I can't really hear it.
Ben was an incredibly talented singer, bassist and absolutely charismatic. His style was unmatched. Beautiful man! Moving In Stereo is a perfect tribute.
That thing he does with his hand at 00:09 to start the performance is SO COOL!! And then there's the sexy way he says "Candy-O" at 2:45... and those high-heeled boots!!
I love the beginning of this song. It’s just so cool, actually the whole song is cool. Awesome musicians, was a great time to be a teenager when this came out.
One of my very favorite bands . Why you ask? The Cars represent a paradigm in rock music from overly organized and hard versions of the Blues to light, fun, airy and simple with a vision while tying punk styles into the beginning of alternative rock and eventually newer pop and party rock. Wonderful dancing music and an upbeat less burdensome war rock music of the late 60's and 70's. Genius that he was and will always be. You and your mark in music are already missed.
He knew.... But it didn't have very much impact on him, or at least he didn't let it affect him much. He was very humble and quite shy. He was asked in an interview what he thought about being "The Sexy One" and he just dismissed it as part of the stage show, but once the show was over he was just Ben. Love the guy, his personality and his vocals were incredible. Very sadlt missed!
Yeah agree, saw them summer of '84 at Blossum outside of Cleveland. I don't remember them sayin' a word...they just came out and rocked it for a couple of hours...:)
@@johnboy1828- They were like that when I saw them in 1982. That may be why I can barely remember that concert, which is upsetting to me. I remember Nick Lowe’s opening set a lot more. Benjamin is so engaging with the audience in these videos, I wonder why that stopped.
Damn... The Cars rocked! They were one of the most innovative bands of their era. The musicianship was at a peak level and extremely under appreciated. Never before has there been such a piercing voice as Ben's.... the guitar licks were crisp and original and the drums were centering, rhythmic and above board all the way. I've yet to hear a band so fresh and exciting..... RIP Ben, you were awesome.
I'm 45 and listened to the cars back in the 70's and 80's, but it wasn't until I grew up and became a musician myself that I began to realize just how talented they were. So creative. True musicians.
God Bless You Benjamin------- The Pride of Ohio ! You passed way too early, but you left a large footprint and legacy....... Many nights cruising and listening to Benjamin and Boys ------ Candy O--------
Damn right. Elliot's LP solo should have been up in the mix. He is one of the greatest under rated guitarists- AND he took time to produce my band's EP in Boston back in '79 AND he sat in with us a few times during our residency at The Rat. SO fun!
I hear the music of the last 10-15 years, but i always LISTEN to the good old tunes (and sing of course). I have been watching a lot of the old Cars live videos tonight, and I am amazed at how cool they were, and still are to me. Grew up listening to them and still do.
i know! The timing of the start with the assured raising of Ben's right hand. The way the band immediately fell into action. Tight! Ben: tough, confident and tight and always on pointe. They all were!! But in retrospect, with all that face-time Ric got in the MTV videos, people were seeing the Cars as good but unapproachable, unlovable; as Ric had that distinctive look which wasn't as appealing to most watchers. Had Benjamin been featured more prominently, fans would have been more drawn to the Cars. His voice was richer and more resonant than Ric. I give Ric all the honor and glory for writing the melodies and lyrics. However, he may have kept a great band from super-stardom due to an over abundance on the TV of his odd appearance, quirky voice and freaky MTV videos. I knew Ben's voice, what Orr sang and what he looked like and Ben's voice, face and attitude are what drew me to the Cars. For myself and many friends, Ric's kooky videos were NOT a net positive. To the contrary. Speaking from a Media, PR, Music and Publicity background, mgmt or Ric, as primary decider of things, made a costly mistake. that's my 2 cents for what it's worth.
delicious in my ears still. !! Better than anything put together in 4o years. This is the future of music... still!!! Elliot Eastman was incredible , just like James-Honeyman Scott of Pretenders. allan spires Legends never ever die they live on. Benjamin’s spirit does
Chronically Kathy He isn’t truly gone ever yeah I was told he is nice and loved his fans.
Few bands are able to "feel" the music, like The Cars did. That, and the cool band chemistry, is what made and makes them so special. True originals.
no fucking around there...that's playing live. .awesome.
+HalfLifeAMD -I saw them back in summer of '84 at Blossom Music Center outside of Cleveland and I don't remember them saying anything. They came out and just rocked!!!
+John Franks its awesome they sound so good live.
+John Franks I saw them in '82! (I wish I still had the t shirt I bought at the concert, haha!)
great bands can playl live
+John Doran that isn't so common nowadays
Ocasek did plenty - he pretty much wrote all the music and was lead vocals on at least half the songs.
Ben was an incredibly talented singer, bassist and absolutely charismatic. His style was unmatched. Beautiful man! Moving In Stereo is a perfect tribute.
What a great band. When the first album came out, their music catapulted us into the future. So far ahead of the times, they're truly incredible.
So agree. Their debut album was a masterpiece!
That thing he does with his hand at 00:09 to start the performance is SO COOL!! And then there's the sexy way he says "Candy-O" at 2:45... and those high-heeled boots!!
More than 40 years after this song was made, it still sounds like it's from the future! That's how good The Cars were.
Gotta love Elliot Easton on lead guitar.RIP Benjamin
Back when instruments were actually plugged in and you knew it was going to be live.. The Cars were a GREAT live band... RIP Ben and Rick!!!
I love the beginning of this song. It’s just so cool, actually the whole song is cool. Awesome musicians, was a great time to be a teenager when this came out.
this is as raw as it gets... BRILLIANT!
Benjamin Orr was the hottest man alive. This band was everything.
Эти каблуки сводят меня с ума! Бен, ты - совершенство😍
Very sadlt missed!
no words ... love love love this group
they did this live and sounds like the record. awesome band
Who couldn't
I wish I could like your comment a million times.
His perfection blows my mind
I am way to young to know the music when it was new but thank god for parents who like this music and bought me up to love the classics .
Yes you are lucky because if it wasn't for my mother I might not have loved The Beatles.
Me too...too young to appreciate the Cars at their prime damn it.
Candyo, one of their most amazing songs, recognized by the diehard fans
Such a tight little band!! Whew, this always get my heart pumpin'!
And this is where we need a time machine
The first time I saw these guys was in 1979. This band played so tight that I was impressed from that moment on! :-)
Agree! Also saw them that year, blew me away....
Yeah agree, saw them summer of '84 at Blossum outside of Cleveland. I don't remember them sayin' a word...they just came out and rocked it for a couple of hours...:)
I saw them too in '79 at Mile High Stadium in Denver. They had a new and creative sound I had never heard before. Still love em!
Michael Barnhart wish I could have been there, Ben would have been in trouble!!!!!
@@johnboy1828- They were like that when I saw them in 1982. That may be why I can barely remember that concert, which is upsetting to me. I remember Nick Lowe’s opening set a lot more. Benjamin is so engaging with the audience in these videos, I wonder why that stopped.
I was just an 18 year old high school graduate when this came out. I've loved the Cars ever since Dangerous Type came out. Those were the days indeed!
Can't get over how awesome this sounds! Total package!
One of the most under-rated bands of all time...this vinyl is perfection
👌👌🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮2023г
I've lost track of how many times I've viewed this video. Never gets old.
What can I say!!?? I love the CARS!❤❤
Benjamin's voice sounds wonderful... he's just so cool. Love him.
Exceptional song, and performance from the legends
This Cars tune seriously rocks
I'm 45 and listened to the cars back in the 70's and 80's, but it wasn't until I grew up and became a musician myself that I began to realize just how talented they were. So creative. True musicians.
Benjamin Orr!! All the best Cars was from YOU darling. Rest In Peace Baby
true
God Bless You Benjamin------- The Pride of Ohio ! You passed way too early, but you left a large footprint and legacy....... Many nights cruising and listening to Benjamin and Boys ------
Candy O--------
Elliot Easton - totally underrated!!
malcolmkettering Playing like a boss
Not in my book
Book of Nickelback, get outta hear......
Damn right. Elliot's LP solo should have been up in the mix. He is one of the greatest under rated guitarists- AND he took time to produce my band's EP in Boston back in '79 AND he sat in with us a few times during our residency at The Rat. SO fun!
iulenny screw yer book
I hear the music of the last 10-15 years, but i always LISTEN to the good old tunes (and sing of course). I have been watching a lot of the old Cars live videos tonight, and I am amazed at how cool they were, and still are to me. Grew up listening to them and still do.
My Dad jammed this on a 8 track in his car. Way back in the late 1970s. Song still Jamz
I had this 8 track also, along with their first album on 8 track. Jammed them in my 1972/Nova.
Awesome... Love the Step back, hand up and kick it off... Elliot's guitar playing is great on this...The sound is great.
Timeless . And still better than anything that has tried to copy this in the years since I was a 6th grader.
Never gets old, still rocking The Cars in 2017 and beyond!!
Easton really was a beast on the guitar!
I bought Candy-O when it came out in 1979....very anticipated album after the monster success of the debut and it delivered the goods!! RIP Ric and Ben
The 1st time I saw The Cars was 1978. I was a junior in high school. They were the opener for Styx. Oh, those were good times!
August 1979 , freshman in college. They played Columbia SC . Played all the songs on the first two albums. Burn the house down
