100%. This is one of the best rock songs in history. This particular live version was the most spot on to the studio version, imo. The very best of all Ocasics songs, by far. Perfect and amazing. Benjamin Orr was a guy who had two personalities, literally. He was a different person on stage. Both of his selves were lovely. Zero ego in either, the height of humility always. @@ciaralangdon1917 I remember an interviewer asked Led Zeppelin what the crowd's reaction was the first time they ever played "Stairway to heaven", expecting to hear how they were raptured. Plant said they were pretty quiet and bored, except that they would yell out "Play Cashmere!" etc. LOL. There is a video on here of Pearl Jam @ Pink Pop in 1992, where they totally nail "Black" and Eddie pours his soul into it. The crowd just gave a tepid response. The worst I ever saw was Lori McKenna doing a heart wrenching, amazing performance of "Make every word hurt" and receiving only a smattering of polite applause. My long winded point? Crowds don't know shit at the time of the performance.
@@ciaralangdon1917 While I wasn't in the audience, unfortunately, I did watch this gig when it first aired on the BBC in January 1979. I was 18 at the time. (Do the math, lol!) I was blown away by the band's performance, and especially by Ben's stage presence. Never forgot it. After watching the whole concert again recently I released that the thugs shouting all had Northern accents. This concert was at Brighton on the South coast! Sounds like the BBC put "plants" in the audience to "liven things up" a bit. It wouldn't be the first time, or the last. At Tom Petty's RGTC at the Oxford Polytechnic he had to tell the audience to shut up at one point, they were so unruly. Typical BBC.
While no one doubts Ric's song writing prowess, it is Ben Orr's voice that carries the more melodic songs. His range, timbre and inflection are difficult to replicate. Though there were more popular songs, this one is tops for me on account of its compositional complexity and the studio versions arrangement and harmonies. Power pop perfection. With all due respect to Ocasik , the songs he allowed Ben to sing were different on many levels. Ben took liberties with melodies and his variations added so much.
kamb196 That's why Ric had Ben sing them. Ocasik, of all people, knew his own vocal limitations, and truly recognized the star power talent of Orr. They were one combination where the whole was much greater than the sum of it's parts.
+kamb196 - I completely agree with you in regards to the composition of this song. I would have to say that it's probably my favorite song from The Cars -- absolutely beautiful and haunting, but yet it rocks! And Benjamin's voice is so amazing and unforgettable. I can't think of anyone who has a voice like his. Lou Gramm of Foreigner comes close, but he doesn't have that smooth quality. Benjamin is IT for me!
mmm, warm smokey brandy with a dollop of buttered honey in it. yuck but it works, eh? As kamb196 so perfectly wrote; it was his range, timbre and inflection. And he could sound gentle and earnest one moment, gritty and raw the next....... go into a high range, then drop it down to a throaty lower range. Benjamin Orr was great! He deserves a better place, a place of honor in the annals of rock.
@@anij8226 it would be a terrible void. We've been so gifted with these great Cars videos. We can only imagine what would have happened, had the audience been introduced to the band through videos from the very start. Guys and girls, both, would have been transfixed by his talent, his cool style, his voice and that changeable, beautiful face.
I saw them during this tour at the Tucson Convention Center, when i was 16 yrs old. they were my musical inspirations. Many years later while I was working as lead-off cook at the Tucson Inn (rock and movie stars secluded hideaway) Rick O called in a room service order and I prepared it for him and his wife, after that, everytime he came to Tucson he'd call in his room service order and asked that I prepare it for them, that to me was an honor. thanks Rick Rest in Peace Ben, miss your talent

Amazing, Ben Orr's voice is almost surreal. Truly never appreciated his talent until I started viewing Cars live performances. I always thought, through my ignorance, that the cars were a great studio band. Damn, was I way off, they were absolutely brilliant live and I wish I would have had the opportunity to watch them live. Always one of my favorite bands, but now they are held in higher esteem by me. 11-14-23 in the middle of the night listening to The Cars after a conversation with my gf in London. Everything will be alright! Wow. Truly a moment I just experienced
yeah, very sad. He poured so much of himself into everything. That man had a beautiful set of pipes. The best and at the top of the heap of a loong list of singers past and present. And as James Laws said, "many don't even know his name.' And as Forev MPH mentioned maybe worse is that the songs he DID sing so beautifully, people think is/was Ric! I did read in a serious music blog that what happened was once MTV and videos started happening Mutt Lange stipulated that if it was Ric's songs, Ric should primarily be singing them. Hence, ya'll will notice after the second and third albums, not only did the style and imo caliber of the songs change to highlight Ric's off-the-wall style and vocal capacity, but of greater note was Ben's participation in singing lead and Rock-god presence was hugely downplayed, if not crushed. So the only people witnessing the Orr phenomenon were those going to concerts. ~~ don't see how anyone could not recognise the vast difference btwn the two voices. I've been hung up on watching the little concert he gave at the train station - Southside Station; especially his gorgeous and sad (to me) "Do you know what it feels like?" What a song!
Jen Dawson I'm a man so I don't look at men like I would a woman. I will agree when he joins in "be alright" he looks like he could NOT be happier. Way late in responding but after listening to the album last night I came in to hear a live version of this most EXCELLENT song. Have to say, Ben looked absolutely stunning in every, every way! Illuminatingly gorgeous perfection! How could he not let that go to his head? But he didn't. He just was. How the universe was blessed by a lovely man such as he. Multi-talented, literally stunningly attractive, humble and kind. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TheatreofPain270: Lucky, lucky you! Please share. We who loved and miss Benjamin are heartened hearing of these poignant moments he touched other people's lives. He was such a peaceful, kind man!
sorry, just saw your question FMPH. No, I didn't personally know Benjamin. I'm an empath and so, sense spiritual facets of people on a deeper level. Throughout his life, Benjamin Orr had a need to excel to the best of all his abilities. He was gifted with many talents as well as a kind, caring open disposition. He gave his all to The Cars. In the end he was used and not appropriately recognized for his measurable contribution to The Cars rise to fame. He was cast adrift, with Ocasek's abrupt departure from the band; punishment. Orr suffered a painful spiritual injury that stayed with him to the end. He was never the same after the dissolution of The Cars. Never as confident, as joyful, as at ease. He tried. He put out a good 'face', but he had clearly lost his comfortable firm foundation and been abandoned and betrayed by some he'd given his all. Look into his eyes. Listen to the words to his songs. It was a bitter pill to swallow. And he spent the last 19 years of his life feeling like a forgotten man. He died with an unrealized legacy, like a forgotten supernova, that once blazed across the universe. His fans love him but he is largely unknown. Given his vast talent and for his giving nature, that's a sad thing.
moodylicious that is so very sad I almost cried...I hope some of this might not be true but with beautiful souls like him, it probably is. Kind people get crapped on all the time...those good ones who give their all to people. I do hear that John Kalishes became his best friend and treated him with respect and love which he deserved. Maybe those times weren't so sad for Benjamin..I hope so.
Plain and simple. Love these guys. Just dont make music like this anymore. What ever happened to music? Wish i had the answer. I was in middle school when this album came out got me through a lot of hard times. These guys were so underrated. Rest in peace Ben.

Benjamin Orr was the best ! I sure miss him and his voice 🥰, and his gorgeous face and smile ! The whole band was truly amazing ! ❤️ Saw them in Atlanta in 1978 open for Foreigner ! Just a 15 year kid, never realizing at the time, just how lucky I was to be there !
Another priceless tune after all these years.❤ In 1978 i met a special friend. Was my friend through good times and bad times. When i had to talk of some bad relationships he would listen to me. God bless you Steven. You really know who your friends really are when you just lost your partner of 16 years of devotion. Then he passed away and my friend Steve came to see me . What a really nice guy. I lost it when my ex passed away. Steven came to my rescue. God bless you.
having these 5 guys in a band & not being short on talent is nothing less than extraordinary. they all contributed their parts to making this band a whole. this performance is amazing. GH on sax. wow.
Greg Hawkes is the most underrated member of the band. Extremely gifted with multiple instruments and electronics. He gave the Cars that unique sound that made them the The Cars.
I count Greg as a key member...he's a muso's muso. I kind of think of the Cars as a synth-pop band among other things so I guess that is a tip of the hat to Greg and his skills. Greg had an interesting rig as well. He relied pretty heavily on his little Korg 700 for strings and other sundry effects but he was also an early adopter of the Prophet 5 for some limited polyphony. The Curtis chipsets were starting to become more freely available and gave the keyboard programming capability and 5 voice polyphony that was reasonably stable and reliable. He must have had lots of support to get that keyboard - they were cripplingly expensive for the regular gigging musician.
I remember reading a review of one of the Cars albums when it came out... The idiot dissed the album and described Hawk's keyboard playing style as "Dinky" What a fucking Moron.
I remember my mom bringing home the vinyl of this when I was around 5 or 6 in 1978 and I couldn't stop listening to Ben or looking at him. Nothing has changed after all of these years. Still love and miss Ben Orr! Now I own my mom's vinyl.
Reading all your comments, I am just blown away! I am with all you Cars fans!! And this song ALONG WITH Moving in Stereo, still can't stop listening after 30-plus years!
Michael, it's like building a great fire when we all need the warmth; we're all pitchin in each in our own ways. Yea, Ben's passing, especially from cancer, it''s always so pointless. Grief is needed but still sucks.
You SURE have that right, and I have trouble distinguishing yrs back then, but seems I bought this myself on LP in about 77 🤔🤔 Without: Moving In Stereo seems somehow incomplete !! I'll "NEVER" tire of this, as with certain other bands of the same time frame ☝⭐💯
Reva Nelson - I would agree, this songs builds slowly, and the vocal backing doesn't work well live. Ben really 'sells' the song and 'everything will be alright' in the end - especially that saxophone!
What makes this extra special is that to my knowledge it's the only video recording of this song in existence. The sound mix and picture quality are superb, we will have this to enjoy for all time. How lucky are we?
If you pay attention at the 4:00 minute mark you will notice something cool during the Saxaphone solo. The Keyboard player is still playing a keyboard part with one hand and soloing the saxaphone with the other. Outstanding musicianship...(Mr. Hawks - thanks).
Ray Quigley Greg Hawkes is actually an accomplished musician; proficient not just on keyboards but also on guitar, saxophone, ukulele, etc....wonder how he likes occasionally being compared to Brian Eno, who once admitted, "I'm really quite useless with a musical instrument!"
So very good, all members . no wonder we are still talking about them... Note and time perfect, LIVE folks. Wow, where have those days gone? Eastman slays with his tone, fills and solos, as usual. RIP Ben and Rik. CAN YOU IMAGINE BEING THERE?
I never heard a better song than this, really. As a kid, I always thought it a great song, though it was not a top 40 piece - too serious for that. As an adult, I see it has all the components - great composition, beautiful melody, poetic and serious lyrics, and in typical Cars style, a valuable part for each instrument: possibly their best song, IMO. I wish Ben could've stayed longer !

Purple Sunflower Right, I’m a child of the 60’s teen in the 70’s and 20’s in the 80’s, I’m lucky to have experienced 3 decades of the Best music!
Yup..you needed real talent..unlike today.
Sue Raymo I was alive then the "growing up" well at 64 years old I'm still working on that.
Not wrong there. Awesome music from 60s to 80s. Yeah?
Ben was absolutely gorgeous & what a voice.
I grew up listening to cars in High School. I still listen to the cars now. Wow. The best in music
I love finding these old Cars videos when Ben was lead singing.
Losing Rick hurts me to my very core. I'm so sad he's gone. Ben Orr too. All of them were brilliant. Gone, but never (not ever) forgotten. RIP.
Here's hoping there's a Cars tribute album (still waiting for that Tom Petty tribute album).
I cried like a baby when Ric passed
Same here 😢💔
They were the very best New Wave / Power Pop band. Each member’s talents fit their role perfectly.

I have the one Tom Petty concert I went to forever blazed in my mind. I was able to get up by the stage and security wanted to remove me but Tom, he shook his head no and I just jammed out to the rest of the show right there :) It was The best concert ever and damn I miss him
What a truly Soul Jarring Song... This audience was CLUELESS as to what they were watching and listening to... Totally...
J Ames if u only knew what this song the message a different message did for my life u freak out
This was their Roxy Music song lol
I know!! Watching them stand around is surreal.
Ben took liberties with melodies and his variations added so much.
kamb196
That's why Ric had Ben sing them.
He deserves a better place, a place of honor in the annals of rock.
moodylicious
I hope they really Hong him at the hall of fame awards
i hate to be a ditz but what does that mean "really Hong him"?

THE Most Underrated Band On Planet Earth

They arent under rated. They sold millions of records
The sax solo at the end is absolutely unbelievable and solidifies this song as the best rock song of all time IMO...
This song kicks me in my heart. So sad and beautiful.RIP Ben and Ric
Yess...Consider yourselves lucky we still have live vids of Ben Orr. Thank you.
sure got that Right !
Valerie Underwood Seriously. Can you imagine how hard it would be if we didn’t have all these lovely videos and UA-cam?
@@anij8226 it would be a terrible void. We've been so gifted with these great Cars videos. We can only imagine what would have happened, had the audience been introduced to the band through videos from the very start. There has never been a rock star possessing all the attributes Benjamin Orr had. Some may have had a few. But Benjamin had it all! Guys and girls, both, would have been transfixed by his talent, his cool style, his voice and that changeable, beautiful face.
I saw them during this tour at the Tucson Convention Center, when i was 16 yrs old. they were my musical inspirations. Many years later while I was working as lead-off cook at the Tucson Inn (rock and movie stars secluded hideaway) Rick O called in a room service order and I prepared it for him and his wife, after that, everytime he came to Tucson he'd call in his room service order and asked that I prepare it for them, that to me was an honor. thanks Rick
Rest in Peace Ben, miss your talent

Yes Benjamin Orr was super hot. The whole band is so talented. I was a child when this came out. Found them in the 80s and been a fan ever since. Peace

You literally don't even want to blink your eyes when watching Ben sing! Oh, who am I kidding! He could just stand there doing nothing and you wouldn't want to blink!!!
Benjamin Orr, what a legend. Just love Hawkes on the saxophone on this song; something about a saxophone in a rock song.
Was a couple years behind Dave Robinson in high school...he was a rock star then & destined to make it big! Still lovin' this band and their music 🎶

All I can say is wow! And Elliot Easton is simply one of the best guitarist's I've ever heard. Greg Hawkes, Jesus these guys are so talented. RIP Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr.
100% what I thought and almost the same timing watching the live stuff. Kicking myself I never saw them live but had all their music from 78 on. Eclectic watching them and they each bring something that you can't figure out how but it works so great together!
@Jesse Lobo - This is just an observation, I don’t mean to pick on you: I might be looking at the wrong comments, but I rarely see praise for David Robinson, the drummer in the band.
@@ellab8897 Cars rhythm section is top tier, you are correct David Robinson was immaculate. I also believe he played inspired on Candy-O one the great albums of any time.
Saw this awesome band in concert in 1980. 42 years later and I still remember the vibe they had. This is one of my all time favorite songs.
ВАМ ОЧЕНЬ ПОВЕЗЛО! 🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮
I regret that i never saw them perform live. This song is one of my favorites.
That beautiful moment when talent, charisma and good luck comes together to form a band worth remembering. I miss this highly underrated band.
11-14-23 in the middle of the night listening to The Cars after a conversation with my gf in London. Everything will be alright! Wow. Truly a moment I just experienced
My favorite Cars song, Orr was a fantastic singer.
Kent Mains What's sad is many don't even know his name 😔 Always Ocasek & Elliot !!
yeah, very sad. He poured so much of himself into everything.
That man had a beautiful set of pipes. The best and at the top of the heap of a loong list of singers past and present.
And as James Laws said, "many don't even know his name.'
And as Forev MPH mentioned maybe worse is that the songs he DID sing so beautifully, people think is/was Ric!
Easily in my top 5, if not my absolute favorite.
Agreed, always thought the backing vocals on this song left much to be desired tho..
@@jlaws007BD Yeah, so many people think Rik sang all the song when Ben sang at least half.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TheatreofPain270: Lucky, lucky you! Please share. We who loved and miss Benjamin are heartened hearing of these poignant moments he touched other people's lives. He was such a peaceful, kind man!
+moodylicious - What a lovely way to describe Ben!! Did you know him personally?
sorry, just saw your question FMPH.
THEATREofPAIN270 ……...You're a scary fucking stalker

having these 5 guys in a band & not being short on talent is nothing less than extraordinary. they all contributed their parts to making this band a whole. this performance is amazing. GH on sax. wow.
Greg Hawkes is the most underrated member of the band. Extremely gifted with multiple instruments and electronics. He gave the Cars that unique sound that made them the The Cars.
I think he is the Sound of the Cars ! Those Key board skills !
This group kicks
Rock and New Wave had a baby and it was named The Cars. Greg Hawkes provided the New Wave genes...
HELL YEAH~
Michael, it's like building a great fire when we all need the warmth; we're all pitchin in each in our own ways. Yea, Ben's passing, especially from cancer, it''s always so pointless. Grief is needed but still sucks.
You SURE have that right, and I have trouble distinguishing yrs back then, but seems I bought this myself on LP in about 77 🤔🤔 Without: Moving In Stereo seems somehow incomplete !! I'll "NEVER" tire of this, as with certain other bands of the same time frame ☝⭐💯

I always like this song and Candy-O. RIP Benjamin Orr. 👍🏼
I read online that Benjamin didn't really like to sing this song live. I think this is the only live version. Travesty!
Reva Nelson - I would agree, this songs builds slowly, and the vocal backing doesn't work well live. Ben really 'sells' the song and 'everything will be alright' in the end - especially that saxophone!
Elliot Easton is totally underated!
Greg Hawkes
Ray Quigley Greg Hawkes is actually an accomplished musician; proficient not just on keyboards but also on guitar, saxophone, ukulele, etc....wonder how he likes occasionally being compared to Brian Eno, who once admitted, "I'm really quite useless with a musical instrument!"
Ray Quigley ...Greg Hawkes watched Geddy Lee play bass and keyboards. .He uses one hand to play keyboards and the other to press the sax keys..
saw that ,bet that puto jz cant do that shit
I was just impressed that he could play a saxophone and keyboards, let alone both simultaneously. Ha! Nerds rule!
