You're right....use key limes. They're readily available here in Southern California at any Hispanic market, which are also "readily available" where I live. Key limes are the only way to go. Great recipe!
I did the recipe , I used a 300ml can of sweetened condensed , I did add the cup of sugar and it was delicious and all my family like it, I think the sugar is important to balance the taste. And I answer cause I do not like to much sugar in recipe and often complain but this one was perfect as it is.

I made this today and the filling had a metallic taste to it. Does anyone know why? The only metal used in making it was a metal whisk. I did forget to add salt but followed the rest of the recipe. I had a waste of the filling while it was cooling. I've put it in the fridge hoping the metallic taste would lessen when its chilled.

I ate one slice and threw away the rest, something I RARELY do. It was extremely bitter. Maybe next time I would use 1/2 cup of key lime juice instead of 3/4 cup. I think it's that amount because you've got to balance out the tangy-ness of the lime juice.
