I’ve been fasting for Autophagy for 3 years. As soon as I understood it I started fasting between 2and 5 days at least once a month. I’m 76 and feel better all the time. Note: I just had the best 5 day fast ever, I learned so much for it. I am excited that my brain is noticeably better than 4 years ago.
@@bonsummers2657 oh thanks for asking. Well first and I had no problem with this was being FAT adapted and making my own ketones. Second days before I start a fast I eat liver, salmon,beef and a mixture of vegetables but all that just slightly more than normal. Start fast and immediately start with essential nutrients. Now this is what i finally understood, water, coffee and/or tea BUT this time I put Nothing in the drinks, nothing. What happened was I never craved or considered any bites of something, resulting in vary comfortable 5 days, 8 lbs off and refeeding was normal. And I only gained back 2 pounds in the next few days. No frenzy like usual. Ketones flowing and no craving. I’m starting again next week. Good 👍

Id be curious to see if they have ever taken someone with arterial plaque and fasted them for a good long period of time . Not omad. Im talking , no eating for a week to a month. Safely supervised. Then checked the arteries after to see if the body removed the plaque or calcium deposits.
I did 7 days at the end of 2020 and in October 2021 went 14 days just water/electrolytes. I'd like to hope that the autophagy in these fasts was a good reboot of my system, only thing that puts me off doing a fast of that length again is the muscle loss, even a few days is bad as Dr Stephen Phinney points out. Took months to regain it and my road cycling suffered badly.
I was diagnosed with 3 clogged arteries and an aneurysm I started on 2000 IU of vitamin C , 2000 of Lysine and 500 -1000 of proline I added 2000 of chondroitin , every 6 -8 hours W/O any negative side effects.( most of these only stay in your system for 4-5 hours. I’m 60 now and I’ve been on an IF regime to encourage autophagy for several months now and I’ve completely reversed two+ decades of high blood pressure and I would imagine, the clogged arteries like you’re describing here. My dad died with 7 stents and eventually a quad by-pass even though he was very active, ate “healthy” according to his docs, and was lean and muscular. I feel blessed to be alive during a time when these details about health are more widely understood. Thx. 😃

The doctor has given us nothing to prove there is any reversal of actual plaque. How about a study showing 70% plaque reversing to a 30% plaque or less.? Why not link us to that solid evidence if it exists. Until then, you need to think about the word "imagine". Why would you "imagine" it to work if no one shows a study of 20 or more with evidence of reversal. Why do people so easily believe things stated without solid proof. Show me the study and I'll read it, as should you and others.

I have no other way to describe what has happened to me as a result of my recent experience with fasting. What was described in this post makes sense to me based on my personal experience. 73 years old with some coronary calcium CAC. Just wondering since calcium seals arterial damage (soft plaque) does the potential reduction of the plaque from the artery expose the original artery damage?

I do extended fasts because as I understand it autophagy also works on clearing out the misfolded proteins that cause some neurological disorders - albeit not as aggressively as elsewhere in the body. I’ve also been doing OMAD for about a month now so hopefully it’s helping to keep my brain in order.

We never run out of "calories" (energy). We store over 50,000 calories in our body fat, able to be converted to energy (ATP). Autophagy's main purpose is not making energy but cleansing of damaged old cells.

According to Dr Paul Mason the plaque in arteries are more likely comprised of phyto-sterol as opposed to chole-sterol. Which suggests that they are more likely coming from plant based oils. Of course we’re all aware of the dangers of seed oils but perhaps it’s wise to limit our use of other plant based fats such as coconut, avocado and olive. All of which certainly have their own benefits of course.

Maybe CVD is just slightly more inflammation than autophagy. With most people having way too much inflammation and with eating 24/7 and 365 days a year autophagy being very low, it's no wonder mist get sick.
It is all about high insulin. Insulin dysregulates the immune system meaning that individual components of the immune system like LDL-particles, monocytes/macrophages, fibroblatst and fribrinoges (which are all involved in atherosclerosis) stop working effectively but there too many of them / they are behaving too chaotic / are too "rigid" etc. Lowering insulin alone (besides activating autophagy by it's own) will automatically lead to a better healing of the preexisting plaque...
Best way to induce autophagy is with extended fasting. Fasting is much much easier starting from a ketogenic state. Otherwise you have to spend 2 or 3 days uncomfortably hungry inducing ketosis. I guess you could say ketosis is a prerequisite for autophagy. It definitely is for successful fasting. So Dr Brewer is valadating those of us who eat low carb and fast to induce autophagy.
Actually, the best way to induce autophagy is with exercise. I used to think it was with fasting too, but it's now known that exercise induces it much more than fasting.
I do both..24 - 30 hr. fast , then go just walk on a treadmill for 30-45 min (HITT) method. Go pee on a ketosis stick .BOOM..(purple) enjoy deep ketosis. If you fast for 48 hours once a week and 72 hours once a month you're muscles and bones get stronger - Not weaker. That's what Autophagy and Ketones does.
It would depend for sure. I do believe there are studies that show you can build or maintain muscle on a fast as long as you do some resistance exercise. However, I don't recall them making a point about whether these people were metabolically flexible or not. So it would seem in theory, if your body wants mainly glucose for fuel and not fatty acids then you might be turning protien from muscles into glucose. But I honestly don't know the answer to this. I just know you don't necessarily lose muscle mass while fasting in the short term, 72 hours or less.
You really won’t, if you’re doing an extended fast once every 1-3 months (which is what most advocate) and shorter 24 hour fast every week or two. Muscle mass depends far more on having a healthy baseline in three areas: 1) regular resistance training 2) hormonal health (and HRT, if necessary). 3) Optimal protein intake (0.75-1 gram per pound of body weight).
The effect by directly growing new neurons will be very limited. But fasting mens also high ketone levels and these will existing neurons make function much better and even let new synapses to grow. And what is more important, the mitophagy (the autophagy of the mitochondria) will make neurons more effective
You could try R-ALA and Lion's Mane mushroom extract. I use the Jarrow brand for the R-ALA, make sure the Lion's Mane mushroom extract is from fruiting bodies, not from mycelium. Good luck to you.

Hello, an effective method to promote autophagy is to take one Inpefa (Sotagliflozin) tablet of 200 mg daily, 30 minutes before the first meal. It requires a doctor's prescription. This antidiabetic medication for type 2 diabetes is reputed to be highly effective. It works by blocking sugar absorption and preventing blood sugar spikes. Here is a very tough autophagy questio. I have ALS and I ha the C9ORF72 gene. I do 24 hour autophagy every couple months. Can autphagy get rid of the radical protein that attacks the motor neurons?

If you start to take statin and studies show that calcification of the arteries progress so what do you think will happen to the 95% Left Anterior Descending blockage? Any info I can review on how long a person needs to fast to get into autophagy for cholesterol to be gobbled up? I’m sure not everyone is the same, but a range would be helpful. I'm not a doctor, but look into vasodilators that produce or stimulate nitric oxide. Nitric oxide expands arteries and it can do so rapidly. However there are cautions with any new supplement that you try and you shouldn't mix with already prescribed medicine unless your doctor approves you to do so.

Humans did not domesticate an animal that could pull a plow until 6,000 years ago. We never ate plants in abundance until extremely recently in our history and we don’t have the gut for it.

Thanks Doc. The Internet/UA-cam is a wonderful place to share such information. It really broadens the knowledge of people and advances mankind slowly but surely. And content like this is so good! I do extended fasts because as I understand it autophagy also works on clearing out the misfolded proteins that cause some neurological disorders - albeit not as aggressively as elsewhere in the body. I’ve also been doing OMAD for about a month now so hopefully it’s helping to keep my brain in order.
I like this doctor more when he was with a big piace of paper, and I cud understand his points more. Now a day, I try to see the points first before committing to the whole talk, but very difficult to find any summary.

This is specific to Akermensia. A butyric producing prebiotic that can sustain on mucus lining but can sometimes overgrow. It might be useful for people who eat a lot of fiber and carbs.

You can reach autophagy after around 17hrs. The longer the better but you can reach autophagy in shorter time frames.

According to Dr Paul Mason the plaque in arteries are more likely comprised of phyto-sterol as opposed to chole-sterol. Which suggests that they are more likely coming from plant based oils.
Of course we’re all aware of the dangers of seed oils but perhaps it’s wise to limit our use of other plant based fats such as coconut, avocado and olive. All of which certainly have their own benefits of course.

Maybe CVD is just slightly more inflammation than autophagy. With most people having way too much inflammation and with eating 24/7 and 365 days a year autophagy being very low, it's no wonder mist get sick.
It is all about high insulin. Insulin dysregulates the immune system meaning that individual components of the immune system like LDL-particles, monocytes/macrophages, fibroblatst and fribrinoges (which are all involved in atherosclerosis) stop working effectively but there too many of them / they are behaving too chaotic / are too "rigid" etc. Lowering insulin alone (besides activating autophagy by it's own) will automatically lead to a better healing of the preexisting plaque...
Best way to induce autophagy is with extended fasting. Fasting is much much easier starting from a ketogenic state. Otherwise you have to spend 2 or 3 days uncomfortably hungry inducing ketosis. I guess you could say ketosis is a prerequisite for autophagy. It definitely is for successful fasting.
So Dr Brewer is valadating those of us who eat low carb and fast to induce autophagy.
Actually, the best way to induce autophagy is with exercise. I used to think it was with fasting too, but it's now known that exercise induces it much more than fasting.

If you fast for 48 hours once a week and 72 hours once a month you're muscles and bones get stronger - Not weaker. That's what Autophagy and Ketones does.
It would depend for sure. I do believe there are studies that show you can build or maintain muscle on a fast as long as you do some resistance exercise. However, I don't recall them making a point about whether these people were metabolically flexible or not. So it would seem in theory, if your body wants mainly glucose for fuel and not fatty acids then you might be turning protien from muscles into glucose. But I honestly don't know the answer to this. I just know you don't necessarily lose muscle mass while fasting in the short term, 72 hours or less.
You really won’t, if you’re doing an extended fast once every 1-3 months (which is what most advocate) and shorter 24 hour fast every week or two. Muscle mass depends far more on having a healthy baseline in three areas: 1) regular resistance training 2) hormonal health (and HRT, if necessary). 3) Optimal protein intake (0.75-1 gram per pound of body weight).

Here is a very tough autophagy questio. I have ALS and I ha the C9ORF72 gene. I do 24 hour autophagy every couple months. Can autphagy get rid of the radical protein that attacks the motor neurons?

I fast every day! I usually eat 2 meals. My first one usually around 11 or 12. I do once an while a 24 hr. Anyway I had 2 A/fib and my last one my doctor told me I have 20% clogged arteries! I don’t drink or smoke!

Great, Video. Muslim are required to fast for 30 days each year during the month of Ramadan. It cleanses the body once a year from all the accumulated things that should not be there.

Any info I can review on how long a person needs to fast to get into autophagy for cholesterol to be gobbled up? I’m sure not everyone is the same, but a range would be helpful. Multiply by 38) - I take a statin too. I’m convinced the oatmeal haas played a big part. Try and add it to your diet

I'm not a doctor, but look into vasodilators that produce or stimulate nitric oxide. Nitric oxide expands arteries and it can do so rapidly.
