    Good knowledge but I’m watching you on a 42” tv, and you kept saying you can see here and see how I do this wire, and I couldn’t see anything. The wire, the bubbling from too much flux, nothing. It would have been very helpful for us to be watching a close up where we could actually see what you were talking about and how you positioned the wire

    Awesome soldering tips. Reminded me that I need to get a new rheostat. I have been using soldering irons that have temperature controls but the rheostat lets you completely turn your iron off. Can you show closer views of the soldering etc. I have been working with stained glass over 30 years but still learn new tips everyday. I love ruby flux but have been using the paste version. I will be trying out the liquid.

    I have set up in my shed, it is cold out there now, does it make a difference for cutting the glass if its cold, I do imagine it would break the glass if its cold and you solider it. because it is not tapered glass. But does the cold affect the flux and other supplies?

    • @ARTyRV
      @ARTyRV  Рік тому

      Hi Carol! We answered this question in last weeks livestream and it will also be featured in an upcoming video. The cold does not effect the glass or the cutting of the glass.

    Tip #6 - always keep the soldering iron tip tinned. Anyone who has used a soldering iron, whether aerospace electronics assembly or hobby projects knows that you need to keep the iron tip tinned at all times. A tip which looses its tinning (solder coating) will typically turn dark brown/black with an oxide layer. It is nearly impossible to solder with a tip which has lost its tinning. Recovering an oxided tip can be difficult and time consuming process. ARTyRV - if you don't already have a video about tip tinning maintenance and tinning recovery, you should. I bet this important aspect is a reason which stained glass novice attempts fail and they don't know why.

    Does the adhesive in copper foil expire? I’m getting back into copper foil after a few years. Most of my packages are open. A few are not. Thanks.
    My instructors hated the technique you showed for soldering. It’s the only way I can do it. Guess it’s not original. LOL

    • @ARTyRV
      @ARTyRV  3 роки тому +1

      It doesn’t really expire and can last for years. Extreme heat melt cause it to melt or it could oxidize. you can pull off a few feet and see if it’s still good.

      Whatever works best! There are several techniques for soldering. Thanks for watching!

      I just opened a brand new pkg that may have been sitting for two mos in garage inside its unopened packaging and it was somewhat oxidized in places. So even though I keep my foiled pcs inside a plastic container until soldered, I will probably need to use the steel wool on it. Another tip I heard is keeping your solder inside a bag or container as well.

      @@ARTyRV that was timely and helpful. I’m just laying out some beveled angels to solder. Apparently, I have been running a bead all wrong and using too much flux. All I have is paste flux. Time to get liquid, apparently. Thanks.

    I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but when you are tinning your edges, please don't have your hand that is holding the piece under where you are soldering. He has been doing this a long time (although I would argue even the best people should not get into this habit). You are just asking for a nasty burn if the solder drips off and gets on your hand.

    I thought your iron has to go to 700 to 800 degrees to be used for stained glass?

    • @ARTyRV
      @ARTyRV  Рік тому +1

      Solder melts 360 - 420 F. No need to overheat iron tip or iron’s handle for copper foil or lead work. Of course working with zinc or rebar you would need to increase the tip temperature. That’s why we recommend a rheostat- to dial in the temp you need.
