I must have watched 10 hours of mind numbingly boring videos of soldering techniques, all of which failed to cover advanced and artful technique, then I stumble upon this gem. My fear is gone, I will make mistakes and learn from them ... and then I'll come back and watch this video again! Beautiful work! Thanks for the inspiration!
I have not attempted to do any soldering of stained glass in 40+ years so taking a 'refresher' course and this is a very fine example of 'How To'. Thanks to Karin for showing me your excellent tecquinique.
This is the best video I've EVER seen on soldering stained glass! Your techniques are amazing and you have solved all of the difficulties I continued to have on my windows! Thank you so much! I've been a glass artist for over 35 years and until now, I've never seen the process of soldering shown to be so easy and smartly done. Also, I loved your birds that you made, beautiful and great work
Me too. I have made at least 50 lamps and mirror wall hangings, and I never got it to look this nice. I mean, they looked good to me and other folks but this style raises it to a new level.
I've watched countless videos on stained glass and soldering and yours are my favorites! No BS and boring people to tears, instead right to the point and your techniques are flawless. Thank you for posting!
The hanger is very important (as you've already discovered) I always use fine brazing rod (buy it from a welders supply store) Bend it with needle nose pliers to form a shape like a number 9. The leg goes along a bead of solder so as to anchor it deeply into the panel. Check out this clip at 11:00 min's you'll see exactly what to do... :-)
Karainz, you are an amazing artist. I enjoy the patterns and work you create. I am presently in my second school for stained glass and no one has taught me to lay a bead as you have done in your tutorials. My masters say my work is really very good...so what they are really saying is you Karainz, have taught me well. Please continue with UA-cam presentations and I will follow you to the moon............ I want to do glass like you do.. Your presentations are so relaxing, peaceful in a calming way. A nice way to learn. Cate
I am new to foiled stained glass and am having so much trouble learning to solder. I soldered my first project which was 47 pcs. The next day I tore it apart and started over. I am foiling the pcs again and will try to solder it again this weekend. Thank you for sharing. I think I've got it now.
I like how you have coiled your solder bar into an upright posture, sitting and ready for when you just want to pick up a bead - hands-free. In general your touch is light and steady. "it's not a race!" you say. It's kind of relaxing watching you work.
Thank you so much. That was really helpful. I recently retired from 40 years of pottery, had stained glass sitting in a box, and dug it out. I'd tried it a couple of decades ago so saying I'm rusty wouldn't cover it. Never proficient but love it. Now, after watching your tutorials I feel more confident.
I have watched several videos on soldering and have to say you make it look easy and have amazing attention to detail. Thanks for posting the video. It helps this beginner to have less anxiety about starting.
Everything you said was necessary to know and it really teaches the right way of soldering, I like the attention to detail, the time you apply to heating the solder, the added piece at the end of the leaf for strength and the clarity of the video. You saved me $280 on the lessons, but I will take some anyway and surprise the teacher with my added knowledge. Thanks. I will post my first work when I/m done..
I just stumbled across your video and decided to watch. Every time I'm in Lowe's or Home Depot, I walk past the soldering irons and think about getting one just to try something like this. Everybody knows that I crochet, and if there's a gift coming, it's likely to be a crocheted piece. But I'd love to have a skill in some other area as well. Now that I've seen your beautiful work, I believe I want to try. I've read the other comments, and I see that you've answered my initial questions. I know this is an old video, but still, it's the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you so much. Also, thanks for mentioning that you sped up the video. I felt less helpless when I read that. lol Ninja edit: I just visited your website, and am even more motivated. Thirty years of experience at the time of that writing, no? I think I'd better pay close attention to your video instructions. Kudos on your beautiful work.
Oh my gosh! That's art in motion!!! I'm working on a project right now and am so frustrated with my horrible solder job! I haven't done any stained glass in years so I know my cutting sucks and I am way out of practice. After seeing you, maybe I won't throw the whole mess in the yard! Thanks
Now I realize that this video has been up for years, but this is the first time I've ever watched someone do stained glass. You sir, are a master craftsman! That was incredible! I will have to check out more of your videos.
From one teacher to another, your tutorials are fantastic. Your method of teaching really helps me to focus on the skill being taught (yes, I've watched several of your videos :) ). I learn a lot from you. Thanks for helping out this beginner in stained glass.
Beautiful soldering. I am a jewelry metalsmith but always have a list of new modalities to try. Stained glass is on my list and I love how you soldered your piece in comparison to how I've seen others do it. Your technique seems to eliminate any soldering blobs and dots that I see so frequently. As a perfectionist with my jewelry soldering, I can see that your technique will help me immensely. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and artistry with us.
Beautifully done. Simple, logical, and with a great amount of nice camera work. The written instructions are very helpful. I got so caught up in watching your technique that I had to go back and read the copy! Keep up the great job! You're very talented.
I tried my first attempt at soldering last night and it wasn't too good but this tutorial has really given me some sound advice so I hope to do better next time. This guy is really good......
I recently retired and learning stained glass. These videos are amazing and I am getting tips my teacher doesn't even know. Such beautiful work! My question is how many years will I need to practice to get this good?! 😉 I absolutely love the tip about fluxing the solder bar!!! Brilliant!
Thank you so much. I was forced into finding out how to repair a large stained glass hanging light, whose mounting bracket broke it solder. Your video really showed your expertise off nicely. I have soldered for electronics (not very cleanly I must say) but now I feel I can do justice to this fixture and remount the bracket. Thanks again. Always had a hankering to do some stained glass work. Maybe I will try it depending on how I do on this job.
This soldering video is so detailed, clear and methodical. I didn't appreciate the various ways of applying the solder and controlling heat. I also see the importance of initial tinning. It's great to pick up important tips after just watching for a few minutes. Inspiring stuff!
Karla, you are amazing! I learned stained glass over 40 years ago, worked on it off and on. Your technique is really inspiring, bring back some good memories. Thank you for sharing! And need to spend some times on your website. Amy
Nice to see someone using bar solder, I couldn't find any on a roll which was solid core so ordered some bar cos that's what I used to use. I was beginning to think that might be what my problem was but seeing you use it with such great results has inspired me to persevere. Not many stained glass shops in W.A.!
You'll have a better chance of finding bar solder from a plumbers supply store or a welding shop. I get mine directly from the lead mill where it's made. (Dominion Lead Mill in Penrose, Auckland NZ)
This was probably the best video I’ve watched so far on soldering! I inherited my grandpas stained glass things and really wanted to continue the tradition but the soldering keeps stressing me out. This video really helped me get a better understanding of how to be neat with it! Thank you so much for uploading!!!
How lucky am I! I just came across another one of your videos! You encouraged me so much to get started again on the beautiful art of stained glass, and after watching your video on cutting curves, I have made two small pieces! I look forward to seeing more of your fantastic artistry! Thank you also for emailing me with a response about two months ago! (Cynthia Ochoa)
I used to do blown glass and now I’m getting into stained glass. It is a completely different skill set! Thank you for the video! Now I’m going to practice soldering!
I just came across this video in my search to learn more about soldering techniques. You make this look so easy! Thanks for the great video. Beautiful work.
Beautiful! there is something so soothing and peaceful watching solder melt and flow!...I think it`s because its puts one smack dab in the now!....thanks for sharing.
Wow I could watch you work all day lol. Your skills are awesome. Thanks for so much, I know this is 8 years old however thankful you still have them up.
I didn't plan on watching the whole 13 minutes as I came across this randomly..but your skill and artistry is just mesmerizing to watch! Very very cool!
You are the best online teacher sir... Salute from Indonesia... Your soldering video is the best i've ever seen so far... Watching ur vid in December 2020
I always know that when I watch one of your videos it will have great camera work so that I can clearly see details. You are so talented! Thank you for sharing it with us.
I have only done fused glass work so far and you have given me the encouragement to do some copper work which I've yearned to do for some time. Thank you so much, you are an amazing artist and it's so much easier to follow your video with text than the usual speech. Cheers, Liz
I have been having problems with my soldering...still lots to learn, but your technique is simple and new to me. I will try it today! Thank you for sharing your amazing skills!
You are absolutely a master. It's a pleasure to watch you solder. I wish if I could acquire that level of skill. Good on you mate. I'll watch other videos of yours. Thanks
Not just great glass work, but also wonderful use of cinematography!! I have seen way too many films made by people who do not use the camera well. You guys did both.
Very much enjoyed it, and appreciate knowing that you use the Weller 100, which I was thinking about getting. I'm getting into this soon, and will check out your other videos. You're very kind to share your advice with the people posting here.
Way cool! I am with Teresa with the over heating. I got a control module which I hope will help. The other issue is that I always end up with a lumpy bumpy mess or a flat solder line that looks like I don't know what I am doing. Your looks amazing! Back to try again. Thank you
Thank you so much for your reply. I am using a Welder 80 so I don't think it is too hot. I think my cutting just sucks LOL. I drew my own design this time and it is full on tight corners and very little pieces that look like they should fit but no such luck. I have gaps all over that I know will have some solder falling though. I have learned more from you and your vides than I did from class. Maybe you need to charge... :) Thanks again!!!
Your accuracy allowed me to stretch myself and learn patience, you inspererar me with your accuracy in the solder time ...:-) Thanks, I read that you are on FB, will seek you there. God bless!!
Beautiful work! Your soldering technique is different from other video's I have seen on the internet. I am new at stain glass and appreciate your sharing your expertise with us. Your are definitely at the top of my favorites list. Watch, practice, watch, practice..maybe someday...
Great work Karalnz...You attention to the details is impeccable and you make it look so easy. Has always been a desire of mine to learn stain glass and you are an inspiration...Thanks
Traditionally lead caned windows are used in large items. There is also reinforcing tape available which is inserted into the lead cane edge during panel construction. This hard brass tape is put across edges that are judged as weak and need stiffening. Keep in mind that most of a windows stiffness is provided by the grouting, so doing an excellent job of grouting with a proper grouting mixture is very important aspect of any quality panel.
very awesome man, i decided that your videos will be my tutorial classes on youtube. and by the way i am i have a disablity which is being hearing impaired person, i love crafts and trying to do some crafts because i like hand crafts and to support my family. thanks again for sharing.
I never would have thought to use a brazing rod to make it more stable, thanks for the tip! I think this will also help improve my technique for doing the outer edges.
my son is handicapped and this is such an inspirational video for him. first thing he said was, dad i want to do stained glass. so im now ordering the things to do stained glass.
That's a good idea strengthening the beak with the wire at the end. Probably obvious to an experienced person but a good tip for us novices. Overall I learnt a lot from this video, thanks!! Pls post more
Yes it is a weller and it is temperature controlled. Do not know it's temp. limit but the tip is a medium chisel #6 on a 120 watt iron. Thermal control it the trick to achieving a great soldered finish.... An uncontrolled iron will quickly over heat when not in use, an under powered iron (less than 100 watts) does not supply enough heat to the job and an over powered one will melt solder too fast. Thermal controlled at 120 watts is just right.... :-)
I have yet to do my first stained glass. I was just searching for information on the subject. I've done a lot of soldering with electrical circuitry and also copper plumbing and there is definitely an art to it even when you don't necessarily have to make it look pretty. Your use of the thicker solder rods I think is optimal to the thinner rolled version. What you do here is beautiful and you do well in demonstrating your technique. I will bookmark this video for future reference for sure. THANX!!
Thank you, your demos are great! You have helped me with my soldering. I needed help there. It really can make or break a project. I like how much detail you share and the fast motion is nice. I like the photo to finished project too~ wow! Great job!
Awesome! Beautiful piece! I just started doing stain glass projects and I always find soldering challenging. This video helped me see how to correctly do it and not make a giant mess. Thank you so much for posting. :-)
Hello!! I liked the video and I congratulate you for the time you dedicate to your work and to share it. I make stained glass child, it's my job and I specialize in the foil copper and diamond cut for many years and my advice is to put too much flux to start welding and is therefore more difficult to apply the solder or tin. Try it and see the difference. Greetings from McAllen Tx !!!
What a great video, easy to follow and I think I am going to try the bar solder, it seems like it would be much easier than the roll. You do great work. Will be following you closely now.
Yes Greg, I do have a group enthusiasts facebook page for stained glass. We are nearly 300 members strong. Search FB for "Karal Studio Stained Glass" Come join us, there is always someone chatting.... :-)
wonderful, simplicity itself, once it has been explained, but so far I have only seen your tutorial that takes the time to do so, love your pair of gannets, very satisfying to see them assembled for life !
Hi Louis, oh difficult question dude.... Firstly I'd consider the design it's cut into, lots of small detail lessens strength, large criss crossing type design not so much. The overall dimension also changes the rigidity too. Larger,... weaker. Panels are reinforced with horizontal bars when needed, there is also a specific brass tape that is used to assist rigidity too. If the panel is exposed to the weather, that can spell disaster, so double glazing a window is always a very wise option.
It's a liquid flux called duzzel. It's my flux of choice, some people do not use it because it is hard on the soldering iron tip, but providing the iron is cleaned after using with it, all is good.... :-)

Me too. I have made at least 50 lamps and mirror wall hangings, and I never got it to look this nice. I mean, they looked good to me and other folks but this style raises it to a new level.
That big solder is cool also. I t helps distribute the metal, and get more onto the iron. Im thinking.
You do not go around each individual pc. first, before soddering together? I was told to do that!
2020,4 am in the morning and watching you, most relaxing and inspiring, huge thank you!!
I've watched countless videos on stained glass and soldering and yours are my favorites!

Seriously. Those are some impressive soldering skills. Can't get over how clean those beads are, Bravo!

I started to take stain glass class this year and watching your video makes me want to better my skills Thank you for your teachings God Bless
This piece is gorgeous! And, absolutely the BEST soldering video I've seen. Thank you so much for sharing your talent!!
Way cool! I am with Teresa with the over heating. I got a control module which I hope will help. The other issue is that I always end up with a lumpy bumpy mess or a flat solder line that looks like I don't know what I am doing. Your looks amazing! Back to try again. Thank you
This is a beautiful process and so easy to follow. Thank you for sharing your techniques with us, your work is inspiring and gorgeous ❤
Wow, what can I say that hasn't already been said, you've blown me away.... Thank you

Your use of the thicker solder rods I think is optimal to the thinner rolled version. What you do here is beautiful and you do well in demonstrating your technique. I will bookmark this video for future reference for sure. THANX!!
I’m a beginner and you have inspired me to try new things with more confidence!!
Excellent soldering skills shown.
Thank you very much.
Hi !!! I'm from Córdoba, Argentina, I loved you video !!! thank you for your generosity of sharing your knowledge !!!!!!!! EXCELENT !!!!
Your technique and talent is amazing! Such a beautiful gift to watch and the final product is absolutely beautiful!
This video is awesome! I've been having trouble with my soldering, and your video was a huge help. Thank you for making it!
I am very impressed with your technique. It helped me identify many of my "rookie" technique errors. Thanks!
Thanks karalnz for sharing your stained glass art with all, you are so generous with sharing your knowlege. Wonderful birds and wonderful 3D buterfly.
Good thing I watched your video. I had forgotten a few things, thanks so much for the refresher.
So nicely done. You took your time and made sure it was smooth ♡ good job!
What a great video, easy to follow and I think I am going to try the bar solder, it seems like it would be much easier than the roll. You do great work. Will be following you closely now.
No matter how many times I watch your videos, I keep coming back time and time again. Your talent is amazing! Do you have a Facebook page too?

wonderful, simplicity itself, once it has been explained, but so far I have only seen your tutorial that takes the time to do so, love your pair of gannets, very satisfying to see them assembled for life !
I'am a newbie and your video, does make life easier, Thank you
Hi Louis, oh difficult question dude....
A Master at work is always a joy to behold...
Can't even begin to thank you for this great tutorial. I've just finished foiling my first piece and will try to follow your tips. Again thank you!
I love watching you work! You have an amazing talent and very steady hands! Thank you for your video’s! Beautiful work!
I was having troubles holding everything , because of my hands , but you make that look easy , thank you
It's a liquid flux called duzzel. It's my flux of choice, some people do not use it because it is hard on the soldering iron tip, but providing the iron is cleaned after using with it, all is good.... :-)
Your video is exactly what I needed to see today! I should have watched before I soldered my first project lol! Thank you for sharing :)
