Reel review Penn Squall 2 30LW - A Solid Choice
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 лис 2023
- This an honest reel review of the Penn Squall 30LW boat reel after a few years and multiple uses onboard my boat.
As always it’s honest and comes after being put through its paces and genuinely this reel is a solid choice for the boat angler be it for conger eels or other larger species.
Modest pricing and easy use and servicing make this a great reel in my view.

I have got 4 of the Penn Squall 50 reels that I bought 5 years ago when I was using my boat for chartering in Tenerife, have caught pretty much everything up to Tuna to 200kg, Wahoo, Sharks and even a couple of small Blue Marlin on them and never had a problem or fault on any of them. Best reels on the market. 😀
That’s a strong list of fish there mate!
I might grab a couple of the 50s I think just to get abit more back bone out back in the deeper water
@theamputeeangler , yes there is some great fishing around the Canary Islands and I do miss that a lot.
When I bought the boat, the previous owner had Penn International II sets for trolling, but they were getting old and starting to cause problems. So I decided to replace one of those with a Penn Squall which was readily available and a lot cheaper to buy, customers found them easier to use and they did the same job so I replaced the other 50's as well.
Now I use them mainly for conger and tope although hoping to head west next year for some sharks at some stage during the summer. 😀
Amazing. Do you know anything about the penn squall 30LW? Im having a hard time finding the info online... Do you know if itd be able to handle big king salmon?
Awesome reels. I started using them for catfishing last year in the freshwater rivers in the southern states. I'm trying to figure out how to properly oil my reels
Great reel. I've got one too and agree great for conger eels, compared to the Daiwa Slosh30 that I had been using.
Glad I am not the only one to agree! I really like them for what they are, not to fancy but get the job done 👍🏻
I’ve just bought one of these with level wind, having a play straight out the box I found it doesn’t automatically click back over to retrieve from free spool when the crank handle is turned, I’m guessing that’s not right as most reels do this. Also noticed it’s very stiff with the clicker on.
Hey 👋🏻
My reel doesn’t automatically click over either, most multipliers I have had don’t do this only fixed spool reels from my experience?
You can adjust the spool tension with the little dial on the side that might solve the stiffness issue but again that’s not a particular issue I have found myself!
I noticed this when playing with one at the store. You're right, every other reel in this price range I've used or played with will click out of free spool with a crank of the handle. Odd and annoying that this one doesn't. It should be mentioned in any review.
Cab be use on jig ?
I wouldn’t use this one for slow jigging mate no.
Glad you get on with it better than my Penn Warfare which must have been too cheap ... last about 5 trips then back for warranty repairs. Or hopefully a refund 😂
I haven’t ever used one of those but that doesn’t sound ideal 😅
I have 3 of these and all have been solid 👌🏻
Is this a good one for Rock Fish?
I haven’t ever fished for them so I wouldn’t know I’m afraid but it’s capable of handling big fish here in the UK 🇬🇧 How big do Rockfish get?
Looks nice! I have someone who wants to sell me a Penn Squall 30LW. (A little different than this reel I think.) But Im having a hard time figuring out how big of fish I can catch on it. Do you know anything about it? Would the penn squall 30LW work for catching big king salmon?
Hey there 🙌🏻 While I don’t have much or any experience with king salmon I do know these reels are used by many here to pull up some pretty big and decent fish and use some big old weights so as long as you match the right rod with it the reel won’t let you down 👍🏻
@@theamputeeangler Thats amazing. Thank you. I think 40 pounds would probably be the biggest fish I could hope to catch where Im fishing. I just wanted to make sure this reel could handle it. I may get this one. It looks amazing. Ill get some 80lb braid and a heavy 9-10' rod and I think I'll be all set! Thanks for the video, and the info. ;) Happy angling!
Would you use this for shark fishing
I don’t do much sharking my way but that will change this year but personally I would use the next size up that my friend has which has much more power!
I want to buy PENN ( USA ) Conventional Right hand operative Reel which can be fixed under the rod . I am from Bangladesh. I want ur suggestion about a good model of PEEN Reel .
Hi there!
These one or the Penn fathom are good reels but it all depends on what type of fishing you’re doing?
@@theamputeeangler The main problems are all this Reels Left hand operation. I need one which must be Right hand operative and that must be fixed under the Rod for angling in the Lake and River .
@shahiduddinchowdhury3380 They come in Right hand too sir.
RH = Right Hand
LH = Left hand
Look for the RH when ordering it will be on the part number of the reels to show either right or left handed 👌🏻
@@theamputeeangler can you suggest a good model of PENN Reel.
@shahiduddinchowdhury3380 The Penn Fathom 2 level drag
Dose it also come with studs
Yes mate that box comes with studs but in never use them personally
