what pier is that i mostly fish balboa and Huntington pier in so cal and caught a nice 33 and 1/2 inch halibut on live mackerel off of Balboa pier and would love to try the pier
Hey what rod do you have for that reel because I got a penn warfare 30lw and I want to pier fish like you I just don’t know what rod to get. Also I really like your videos
A couple of years ago I was fishing off the Santa Cruz pier and hooked into something that ran like that. Almost sppoled my and went straight underneath the pier. I had on a 1 oz weight and a live anchovy. I thought it was a halibut but after watching this video . I think it was a ray?
yes, the warfare is much like the rival. i have a rival 15 and i just removed the level wind. this may not be a job for everyone! read on .... put the spool in free spool. undo the screw cap that's underneath the level wind guide then tap the guide so that the level wind pawl will fall out. remove the 3 screws that hold on the clicker side plate, pull out the spool. remove the two screws that hold on the gear box to the frame (their heads face the spool). remove the two screws that hold on the gear side plate. remove the little screw that keeps the large handle screw from loosening, remove the small handle screw washer and the handle. remove the two small washers and the four large washers. now here's the important part - remove the chromed handle side ring plate and hidden underneath is a small phillips head screw, remove it. the entire plate is under tension from the two pinion yoke springs, so slowly lift off (straight up) the entire gear side plate. you'll see that the level wind worm shield and worm gear are held captive by an E-clip. this is kinda tricky, but i used a pair of small flat head screw drivers to push out the E-clip. the entire worm assembly will now slip out and the line guide assembly will slip off as well. reassemble the gear side plate - make sure the gear anti-reverse dogs and pinion springs are all in place and carefully push down the cover. i needed to work the free spool lever back to the retrieve position in order to get the cover to snap back on. put back the rest of the gear side plate, re-install the handle. i cleaned the reel frame where the level wind holes are left showing and put a piece of black electrical tape over each hole to keep out water and sand. done.
another fact i just uncovered about the penn rival is that it has NO spool brakes at all. the penn website claims that all the rival reels sport "mechanical" braking but that's false and my conversation this morning with a penn tech confirms the penn website info is wrong and needs to be changed. he stated that in the case of the rival reel, "mechanical" means using your thumb, LOL! i will do some investigating to see if i can mag the clicker side plate. so far, my first cast with a 10' 2-6oz payload fiblink rod and a 3oz sputnik on the rival's 16# ande mono went 77 yards. the next cast i added more leverage and it went 89 yards with no fluffing of the line. this cheap reel is kicking some butt! wow.
to fully remove the level wind, it will involve removing the level wind guide screw and drop out the worm gear pawl, remove the clicker side plate and remove the spool, remove the gear side plate (tip: the chrome ring must be completely pulled off to reveal a small screw that must also be removed), remove the E-clip that holds in the worm gear shell and worm gear - both will fall right out, put back the gear side plate, insert the spool, put back the clicker side plate, put a small bit of electrical tape over the two remaining level wind holes left in each frame side. done. :)
Not yet but I probably will next year. Not a huge fan of perch fishing, I don't think it takes too much skill, mostly just luck. not much behavioral difference between a 13'' and 16'' perch
Bat rays can be easily caught using a fish finder rig with 4/0-6/0 circle hooks and chunk Mackerel on the hook. Just don't bury the tip of the hook and keep it exposed.
You have to take apart the reel and remove the actual piece that sits on the worm gear. The worm gear that drives the level wind is still engaged but the casting distance is greatly improved. Iv'e got a ton of questions about this so I might make a video
You can greatly increase the anti reverse strength but ordering a AR clutch and clutch retainer for a warfare. You get instant anti reverse and it keeps from those flimsy dogs taking all the load.
Have you ever tried battery wings they’re delicious they taste like a porky chickeny fishBetween has two fillets and Lexi take the skin off but you should try it someday
Pit bull Maybe we were all fishing for rays and the standard etiquette at least at that pier is to let the person with the fish go where they need to or the ray will run under the off limits part of the pier and break you off just like that one did
Lived there til I was 21 Fished three when you could still go on the boat. Nice fish, thanks for the flash back

Santa Cruz
How do you cast them?
When you reel in on his reel how does it diversify the line through out the reel
You have to manually lay it on the reel
Use your thumb to move the line evenly/level it on the reel
That's why they make level wind reels
The level wind on this reel sucks! Take it off and do it by hand but again not everyone can lay like even like that.

@@rfdsrd Thank you so much for the tutorial! i'll do my best since its my first time, its gonna make me nervous for sure :)
I want to know how it is used.
Can you please do a video on how you removed the levelwind on the Penn Rival

Where were this?
Can you send me the link to your rod and reel set up

How far can u throw qith that reel and how much weight? Great vid
Hate that braid digs into itself. Got the same combo gonna switch over to mono
If you lay braid in at a slight angle, and at proper tension, it will not dig into the spool. Like / then \.

I’m about a year or two late but what Rod do you use with the Rival now? And what monofilament line would work good with this?
You will instantly backlash with mono on penn rival use braid
@@Saif_yt56 Then you dont know what you're doing. Mono is far more forgiving.

What pound line?
I love those Penn conventional reels but from evidence of this video, they should make more Left Handed reels so that your right arm can dominate.
What rod do you have?
It looks like a spinning rod 😮
Great fishin bro ,greeting from borneo
Way to go bud, mud Marlins are hella fun to catch, just wish they were better table fare. Do you fish in the sand crab classic down there?

Good catches bro!
Did you take the level wind off yourself?
yeah, you get a lot more distance without it
Please show close up of fish caught bud! We want to see the size n species of ray… etc
Does anyone know where this is? really wanna take my grandpa out, he’d love it.
Ik im a lil late buhh where this @ if you dont mind would be greatly appreciated💯

@@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231 this actually helped dude 🙏🏻
@@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231 also do you think this reel would be good for casting irons or nah
It’ll probably do fine if you fish it with zero spool tension and just use your thumb. It casts 4 ounces on a 9’ pretty well
@@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231 better to remove the entire worm screw so that the spool gear doesn't waste energy moving the worm.
I have Q how is it possible to pick up a ray and not get stabbed
Bat rays have 2 holes on top of their heads, so you can pick them up from there without getting stung
@@mateowu8048 never ever pick up a ray by those holes. pick them up wile holding their mouth. watch a youtube video of how to hold one

Is that a conventional reel on a spinning rod

Always use heavier leader if not just stick to the braid you have instead of that weak mono
