    I'm THAT hardcore spinning guy who just got his first baitcaster for catfishing and have backlashed it almost every other cast and about to shelf it for the season before I found this video. My dude.... ❤❤ I even made sure I had my line memory synced up with the baitcast reel cuz I didn't know. 🤣 Good to know; also for you for future if you follow the memory of new line with your spinning reel your GTG, it's only when you run it backwards (the spool goes the opposite way the line turns) then it trys to "pop off" when you open the bail. Thanks again homie!! 🎣

    I'm old. My reel is old. I have a Penn Squidder #140 I've had this reel all my life. Today I have it on a 10' surf rod, and can cast
    200 yards of 40lb line no problem. This gets me into the main channel of the Ohio River at Alexandria Point,
    Portsmouth. My PB was a 67lb flatty at that location. 2yrs ago I beached a 41lb flatty same spot. A spinning
    reel would maybe get me 100 yards out if it was a surf casting outfit, a football field short of the main channel.

    on the second cast, at the time of 3:43 - 3:45 (watch in slow motion) you put your thumb on the spool for a second to slow it down. Even though your shoulder hides your arm and you don't rest your thumb doesn't mean that, that's a "thumb free" on the second cast. At 4:12 - 4:13 time when you release all of the tension, you prop up your pole high so you can stop the spool before your sinker hit the ground. You are very "smart", using a 60-80 pounds mono line to demonstrate; with that kind of pounds the line is stiff and hard to backlash unless you're whipping the sh!t out of it. I am a beginner at baitcasting. You are right, my 6.6ft baitcast rod can cast as far as my 8ft spinning rod. Thank you for the tips. :)

    I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

  • @rfdsrd
    @rfdsrd 2 роки тому +1

    The spool end cap on a revolving spool reel is *NOT* to be used as a spool braking mechanism. Doing so will add friction wear to the spool spindle at the least. These end caps are there for two reasons - to better center the spool in the frame and to set the spool free play to a minimum. This is done by screwing in the end cap a little at a time until the spool feels the friction of the end cap. Then slightly relieve the friction and allow the spool to have full free play. That's it. Do nothing else with spool end caps.
    These days, all "bait casting" reels will at least have 2 to 6 centrifugal brake blocks on the spool. Each of the blocks can be either removed (or turned off) to increase the speed of the spool. Initially, all blocks should be left on (or turned on), for maximum spool braking. Remove (or turn off) a block at a time as casting proficiency improves. Brake blocks will require taking off the gear side plate of the reel in order to adjust the blocks and are not a simple, quick braking adjustment as are externally controlled dynamic spool braking.
    Some conventional reels also come with magnetic spool braking. This can be an array of magnets or a single magnet, and either are adjustable for the amount of magnetism applied to the aluminum spool. The magnets create "eddy currents" to metal spools, slowing them down. Most magnetic spool braking is dynamic, meaning the mag strength is easily adjusted with the turn of a knob on the side of the reel. Start off with full magnet strength and very slowly decrease the magnetism as one becomes proficient with casting.
    There is a relationship between the payload weight and line diameter and wind direction and strength with regards to how much braking is required. For the very most part, full spool braking is the way to go when learning how to cast a conventional revolving spool reel. Initially, it will be "hand's off" casting, as seen in this video.
    For absolute maximum casting distance, remove the level wind completely from the reel. These things just add a huge amount of wasted spool drag that will severely limit distance. After casting, lay the line back on evenly with yer rod holding hand fingers. No need for a level wind for throwing out bait chunks, but they can be handy for lots of lure flipping relatively short distances. Yep, ya might need a pair of rods 'n' reels - one for bait, one for lures. 🙂
    The main line on these reels should be monofilament. Better quality copolymer mono (Sakuma, Sufix Tritanium Plus, etc) has less memory than cheap mono and will simply work better for casting. It also pays to add a heavier mono shock leader - this is Mandatory if maximum distance is required and Hatteras or pendulum casting techniques are used. If the main line is 14lbs to 30lbs, a shocker leader of 50lb mono is uni knotted to the main line ( i.imgur.com/LUkkC5w.png ), and will allow 3 to 8 turns of the leader around the spool with a payload drop off the rod tip of about half the length of the rod.
    A cheap KastKing Rover 40 to 60 will easily do 100 yards with just centrifugal brake blocks and no thumb on the spool until splashdown. Enjoy, 👍

    Just subscribed. Finally a video with levelwind reels! Love the idea you can tighten the tension knob all the way and cast without the thumb or nest because i cast 8+ oz with weight, leader+ bait in saltwater & the line physically burns my thumb as it is cast, so seeing i can cast it without the burn is fantastic. I got 100# 4 strand on my Penn Levelwind & 70# on my AG spinning reel. Casts smooth. Gonna try this technique this weekend in the yard with my Penn & see how it goes. Hope it works with no thumb or eagles nest 😂. 🤞... Thank you Sir for this video. BTW, what is that reel you have in this video?

    I have started fishing with Penn reels. All are vintage reels. I can get good distance from the smaller ones like the Jigmasters. Squidder, 66s and such. Still having trouble getting distance from my 4/0 and 6/0 Senators. Great video.

    • @Shurmash

      The ultimate way to feather the spool (which allows you to loosen the tension knob and increase distance) is to cast with your index finger on the trigger and your thumb gently touching the reel as you cast. Two hands, moderate power until you get it down pat. Tight lines out there!

    • @leemurphy3960
      @leemurphy3960 2 роки тому

      About the only time we are really worried about distance is when we saltwater fish from the piers. Don't have that problem here in KY. I use spinning rods in 10 to 12 feet. No trigger. These reels cast better with spinning rods than they do with casting rods. We cast about 8 oz of lead and half or sometimes a whole 8 inch fish with 70 to 80 lb braid line. The 4/0 and 6/0 Senators still get about 100 yds. Not bad

    • @MrCobb-rq8iv
      @MrCobb-rq8iv Рік тому +1

      I'm not familiar with the Senators but I will add this; if they are very old and used, you might take them apart and remove the level wind gear and that shaft and guide. Clean and lube it up good while you are there. Use your thumb to level wind on retrieve. It bet you won't believe how much further it will cast. If not, reassemble parts.

    • @leemurphy3960
      @leemurphy3960 Рік тому

      @@MrCobb-rq8iv the Senator isn't a level wind. I have about 6 of the Penn 209 and about 10 of the 309s. They are level winds but never use them. The 4/0 and 6/0 are are just big for casting. Since I wrote the first time I am learning to cast the bigger reels. I have added 4 4/0s , 2 6/0s, a FinNor Golden Regal 50 and 2 9/0s. All my reels are vintage except 1 of the 9/0s is made in China. Bought it so my grandson would have a big reel to shark fish with. I use 150 lb braid on them. All my reels are disassembled, cleaned, lubed and the spindles of the spools are polished and I also upgrade the drags. The 9/0s got hot rodded with alot of stainless steel parts for strength. If I use them in saltwater then I disassemble them again and clean them. A few of my Penn reels are from the 1940s. Love the old ones.

    • @jerryjashinsky2699
      @jerryjashinsky2699 Рік тому

      4/0 and 6/0 senators are not intended to be casting reels. It's a matter of physics. With the large steel spool filled with line, it takes a lot of inertia to get that moving. Their really made for bottom fishing or trolling. Although you can cast them, there are much better large reels made for casting.

  • @Shurmash
    @Shurmash 2 роки тому +7

    The biggest secret that isn't a secret is to cast with your index finger on the trigger. This puts your hand further back on the rod allowing your thumb to be basically behind the spool. This also allows your thumb to make the least amount of contact and makes feathering a breeze. Before I did this feathering was difficult at best.

    If you guys have not jumped over to the casting reels then you really are loosing out. As he said this is one of those things that does help you catch more fish. You can really cover so much more water with a decent casting reel over other types. I was hesitant at first but finally got the exact Okuma Classic he has in this video.
    After about a good one to two hours of practice at a local park and a Marina I have gone from having the tension turned all the way up to turning just about all the way down and having no backlashes. I took measurements and I have been able to get 100 to 110 yards casting distance. I have the reel paired with an 11 foot Daiwa FT Surf rod. And keep in mind the rod is a spinning rod so imagine I could get even more distance with the same but casting rod. This really does take fishing to a whole new level.
    The only problem now is slowly I will have to change out all of my rods and reels and this is no small number. I wish I would of done this before getting all of the spinning rod/reels.

      @@reelcatfishing4479 Ill let you know for sure. Where I am trying to cast there is a sunken F4 Phantom Jet in the marina that is about 150-175 yards out that I am trying to get to that is about 65 feet deep. I am trying to get to it from shore. This is the most overwhelming structure in the entire marina and can imagine there is swarms of fish there due to how it drops off and the huge Jet on the bottom. I only was able to try a few casts last night at the spot as the wind was just to strong and going against me so was a good 50 yards short. Also I am swapping out the line from the 20lb mono(.40mm dia) to some 30lb braid(.30mm dia). I imagine I can easily get 10-20% further for the fact that is thinner diameter line. Just hope this wind that seems to always be in the evening when I fish ceases as its making it hard especially because its going against me.

    • @reelcatfishing4479
      @reelcatfishing4479  5 років тому +1

      That does sound like a great spot. I bet it's loaded. I hate when then wind is not in ur favor especially when ur trying to get out really far. Braid will cast further but it is a little easier to backlash sometimes.

    • @reelcatfishing4479
      @reelcatfishing4479  5 років тому

      But as fast as your learning I'd say u will be fine with braid

    • @burnham187
      @burnham187 5 років тому +1

      @@reelcatfishing4479 Yeah hoping there is a lot of fish there. Yes taking into consideration that braid is easier to backlash and harder to get undone so will tighten tensioner a bit more and go from there. At first was hard to always remember to have thumb on the spool during casting and putting good pressure as soon as it hits water but now is second nature. That really is the key as long as you always remember that then should be good.

    Question: I have a KastKing Rover 50 reel. Is this reel good for casting supposedly. The brake adjustment seems to do nothing for slowing down the spool. It bird nests awful even on short casts. Is there a trick to this reel for casting that I am missing??? Very frustrating. I love the reel but I can't use it for casting

    Glad you uploaded this! Am going to be ordering my first baitcaster tomorrow and wasnt really sure which to get. Still eyeing the Okuma CLX 450La, the Okuma XP Pro 452 and the Kastking Rover 60. Really like all 3 but am on a budget of around 65$ and looking for a reel that can hold plenty of line, has bearings not bushings and the auto engage.

    • @reelcatfishing4479
      @reelcatfishing4479  5 років тому +1

      The I have the okumas in several sizes. Love them but they don't auto engage. Idk how much you would want to pay for one but Penn makes some great reels that auto engage, have loud clickers, hold alot of line and aren't as high as the Abu Garcia. You can find them for around 70 bucks. If that's to high the okumas are still awesome and not having auto engage doesn't take long to get used to

    • @Adalwolf17

      @@reelcatfishing4479 Yeah my budget is just around $70 atm. I like the look of those Kastking Rovers, might end up getting one of those or the Okuma you have but i a bigger size. Any experience with Kastking stuff before?

    • @reelcatfishing4479
      @reelcatfishing4479  5 років тому

      Penn makes very good reels. Nice drags and clickers especially. They are well built and last a long time. Only issue I've ever had is that the bigger reels are harder to cast without backlashing and they don't cast as far.

    • @highdesertkatz7790
      @highdesertkatz7790 4 роки тому

      Penn rivals are crap in my opinion. I have 4 20 size. All clickers have issues strait out of the box
