Penn have come a very long way with their fishing equipment. I now use the Penn Fathom II casting special, and I love it. I used to use the ABU 6500 ct reels, but the Penn trumps them in every way. I think that Penn will become the main name in fishing here in the UK. Tight lines buddy. Ohhh yes, I have now subscribed to your chanel.
*Hands down one of the best reels I've used at this price point. **enjoyable.fishing** recommend Casts much better than expected and is very quiet! Great stocking stuffer ;)*
Fiblink has great rod and I use them myself but have switched to using the Daiwa Emblem Pro 12’ casting rod paired with the Penn Sqaull 2 size 12 and 15. It is light but a bit on the softer side for me compared to emblem pro. I mainly use it for crab snaring so a solid backbone rod is more ideal for crabbing.
I have a first gen pen fathom 2. I throw a pound on the in coming tide and 10ounces on the flood and out going tide here in alaska. Using either a 12 or 15 foot rod, i get about the dame distance. The tides and currents are extreme here. I can cast about 100 yards. Id like to try the fathom cast special to see if i can hit 150yards.
Great review, and a good day out fishing! Looking to start Surf fishing in my backyard- the Pacific northwest. Squall looks like a hell of a buy for the money. Gonna pick one up, clean out the grease and oil it up for distance!
Thank you! I'm in love with the reel for surf fishing. Super smooth! Now I'm wanting the low profile model for throwing swimbaits and pitching live baits
I have a tip for you you might want to use.. bait the hook on with High Tensile Elastic Thread 328ft Spool Dead Baits Fishing Tackle (ebay) and bait the hook to the zinker with SmartSolve 0.5mm x 225ft water soluble string, reel that dissolves quickly in water ( amazon ) ok I have penn fathom 15 CS put on a 14 ft daiwa windsurf .. I achieve a distance of 175 meter (191 yard )) try it you will stop shooting helicopters ...........
I'm highly considering getting this exact model for kayak fishing grouper/king mackerel. I like the lighter feel of it compared to other conventional reels, but I'm gonna need to learn how to spool and retrieve line well on a non-levelwind lol. It looked at times like your line was moving side-to-side by itself as you retrieved it.
I absolutely love the rod but the guide seats are starting to corrode from the saltwater. My next one I'll put a little wax around the guide feet to prevent saltwater from reaching them.
I opted for the regular 15sd version as well over the casting special... there is no difference in the magnet system other than the knobby style knob...the line capacity is slightly less
CS version allows 16 settings of drag how many setting on the SD. I went with the Casting Special but I started to get the SD version instead. How is the SD version holding up.
Hey I'm a new subscriber, my question is...I purchased the same reel and I would like to know does the weight matter when it comes to the drag not being able to slow the release because I have a 5oz weight tied on and the release is very fast...I've tighted the knob and star drag to max but the release is still to fast. Not sure if it is because of the 5oz weight.
The Penn fathom II has a stronger drag. That is the big difference it’s not just cosmetics. I sell all Penn fathoms for guys targeting fish over 20lbs. Up in the northeast guys love them for sharks and stripers!
Thinking about getting one of these for my first conventional reel my main concern is how the line stays even on the spool? Again I’ve never used conventionals only spinning and baitcasting
I am using my squall 2 15 for surf fishing and find that 4oz weights are near the top if what the reel can handle. Could be user error but I may need a 20/25 series for the surf?
I run 80 pound braid with a 40 pound floral leaderin Minnesota i sling 5-7oz weights by the local dam. The most I’ll throw with it is about 10-12 oz including my live bait. I like to use bullheads for big flats and walleye
@@MaddogFishing I ordered one via "Carlism-28 " ebay seller. Unfortunately seller could not fulfill order. I'm still searching for a 11", 15-30#, 2-6 oz Conventional Surf Rod.
At least show some respect for the fish and release them in the water by hand instead of chucking them out into the surf. Great review though, recently just got the same real and receive the casting special version tomorrow.

Hi, I used to use the Abu 6500 ultra cast but now use the fathom 2 c/s also
I just got a call, my two fathom 2 c/s are in! Can’t wait to pick them up!!!
Heak yeah, I love mine
Great video maddog! Thanks for making these videos! Really enjoy watching them!

I'll have to check it out. I like a softer action rod for pompano fishing

I love mine, I'll probably add a couple more to my Arsenal next year. Not that I need any more surf fishing gear for the love of God.
I have the same reel on 11' rod. Longest casting combo I have.
great combo
I have a first gen squall 12, tough little reels. Landed a 2-1/2 foot southern stingray after more than a half hour fight.
I absolutely love my reel

Cool review, I was looking at the same reel few days ago, if I decide on one I'd just as soon get it from your link

what kinda of line are you using
That was a thicc Blue! He's been hitting the gym! 😂
😅
Why didn’t you get the casting special version that’s more for distance unlike the model you have ?
The casting special was not available and this one still has the magnetic cast control.

Enjoyable. I might have kept the red at 16.
I didn't have my cooler with me

How is that Rod holding up noticed it was a Moonsniper from Fiblink.

There's a knob on the side. Not the drag. tighten it up and use the flat adjustment to fine tune if your using different weights
very difficult to find this model in size 15 with the crank on the left, if you have addresses I am interested... thank you very much

The Fathom II is also all metal frame compared to the graphite Squall.

just use your thumb to guide the line back and forth. It doesn't have to be perfectly even but after using it for awhile. You'll get better at it.
How are you liking the squall and has it held up long term ?
freaking love it. It gets used at least three times a week. I'm a surf fishing guide so it get used alot
@@MaddogFishing Great . I bought one too .

I use between 3 and 4 oz with no problem but I'm like you. I would like one size bigger to handle the heavier line

Up here on the mid Atlantic coast people regularly through 8oz and bait with the 15. The reel can handle it.
A year later. How is the fiblink holding up.?
I use it every week with no problem.

nice 👍
That's the regular star drag right?
Yes sir, I absolutely love it for surf fishing.
That was pretty cool to catch a turtle
Line pawls for an abu garcia reel are like 7$. It's like buying a new car so you don't have to change the breaks
Buttt if you can get a cheaper car, that performs better, with less maintenance..
