4K Blu-rays do NOT need an Internet connection!

  • There has been a rumor going around that 4K "UHD" Blu-ray discs require an Internet-connected player in order to work. For this reason, many people I know have decided not to buy one.
I attempt to prove once and for all that this is NOT true! Before any 4K movies were released, there may have been rumors that an Internet connection would be required, but once the releases started coming out, they work fine offline.
The thread I refer to in the video is here:
    forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.p...
Some technical ramblings about why the Blu-ray Association may have considered requiring an Internet connection:
It's no secret that the video files on Blu-ray discs are encrypted. This is by design - to act as a form of copy protection and make sure people can't create illegal copies of their discs. However, much like DVDs, the encryption was cracked fairly quickly.
The way it works is two-fold: each disc has a unique key (or multiple keys) - this is how DVD's content scrambling worked as well. Because your set-top player obviously needs to be able to decrypt the streams, the keys needed to decrypt them are stored on the disc somewhere, the only challenge is figuring out where. By reverse-engineering a Blu-ray player, people were able to figure that part out.
The unique factor to HD media (HD-DVD and Blu-ray) was in a set of "common" keys that all discs used in addition to the disc-specific ones. Only set-tops authorized by the Blu-ray Association who paid the proper licensing fees were given those keys. But again, they eventually leaked and decryption methods emerged.
Given this information - my guess is that the Blu-ray Association wanted to put a stop to this, and not put any keys on the discs themselves. Each movie would be encrypted with a unique key, but said key would not actually reside on the disc - so no amount of reverse-engineering could obtain them. Instead, your licensed player would need to "check in" with a server to verify that it's indeed a legal disc, in which case it would be given the keys.
However, much like the public backlash of the original proposed Xbox One, chances are enough people complained that the Blu-ray Association decided to just leave things as they were and put the keys on the discs like they already were for standard BDs. It's interesting to note that as of uploading this video (October 2016) there is still no way to actually decrypt 4K UHD Blu-ray movies yet, even though any BDXL drive can read them.

According to AACS 2.0 architecture element draft released in Feb 2014, there are two user cases when playing a uhd disc:
"- Disc does not require online connection - Title Keys and Security Module (if provided) delivered on disc
    • Disc requires online connection for first playback, but first playback has occurred and Title Keys have been downloaded and cached"
If this was not updated in later revisions, the first time you play a uhd disc, it could either have title keys burnt on the disc, in which case you don't need internet connection, or requires internet to download the title keys.
After first playback, in either case, with the same uhd player, you don't need internet to play the same disc again.

Yes they do. But only if it does not have key for newer blue Ray's.

That would be the case with ANY Blu-ray, not just 4k ones. And they don't need the Internet to *play* the disc, you just have to update the firmware of the player one time and you can disconnect again.
The Xbox has periodic updates to the "Blu-ray Player" app which I believe does the same thing.
