Magic Lantern is a firmware enhancement for Canon DSLR cameras, including the 5D Mark III. It is not developed or endorsed by Canon but is created by independent developers to unlock additional features and capabilities not available in the original camera firmware.
One of the notable features introduced by Magic Lantern is the ability to shoot RAW video on the Canon 5D Mark III. Normally, the camera can only record video in the H.264 format. However, with Magic Lantern installed, you gain the option to shoot in RAW video format, which provides uncompressed and unprocessed image data from the camera's sensor.
RAW video on the 5D Mark III with Magic Lantern allows you to capture video footage at a resolution of 5.7K, which is significantly higher than the camera's native resolution. This increased resolution provides greater detail and flexibility in post-production, as it captures more information from the sensor.
Furthermore, Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW recording, which means it captures more color information compared to the 8-bit or 12-bit compressed formats typically available in DSLR video. The additional color data provides a wider dynamic range and more flexibility for color grading in post-processing.
Card spanning is another feature offered by Magic Lantern. It allows you to record video clips that span across multiple SD cards, effectively extending the recording time beyond the limits imposed by a single card's capacity. When one card fills up, the camera automatically switches to the next available card, ensuring uninterrupted recording.
It's important to note that Magic Lantern is a third-party firmware modification, and installing it on your camera carries certain risks. While Magic Lantern has been widely used by many filmmakers and photographers, it's essential to thoroughly research and understand the installation process, potential risks, and any limitations or compatibility issues that may arise. Additionally, installing Magic Lantern may void your camera's warranty, so proceed with caution and make an informed decision before proceeding

insane colors!
Thanks, yeah that's canon color. The only thing that I've done is decrease Highlight and boost shadows
Awesome footage.... Good Job!
Thanks, man. I appreciate it.
Could you please do camera settings & workflow video?? this is awesome quality
Sure, I planned on doing so. Anyway thanks for watching my video.
just bough the camera. Can't wait to test it out :D
That's great man...
Thanks for the video man, you made me want to pick up one. Few questions tho, how long can you record 4K and FHD?
It may depends on the Memory Card, I'm using 32GB CF Card and 32GB SD card both Sandisk Extreme Pro version. I forgot the exact duration, if the bitdepth in 12bit, you'll get continous. And for FHD 3:2 full sensor read, I can record until my 128GB full
Hi, I want to get into what Magic Lantern means and I have a question:
*I want to exclude EOS M because it is too expensive now!*
In my country, the prices for a 700D and a 5D2 are roughly similar (150 USD) and a 5D3 is a little more expensive (350 to 400 USD) and I honestly don't know which choice to make because the 700D is the only camera from those mentioned that uses crop mood!
Do you think the crop mood is better or 5D2 is worth more than the 700D? And what do you think of the differences between 5D2 and 5D3? Do you think it's worth investing a little more and buying a 5D3?
For me it is also important to be able to use an external monitor without problems and although I am most interested in the video part, it is important to have a camera that can take quality pictures and that is why I think the 5D3 would be the best option, but I'm also waiting for your opinion about crop mood vs 5D2 and 5D3 and what decision would you make if you were in my place!
Thanks in advance for the answer and for everything you do on UA-cam!
Hi @poetu7334 thanks for watching my video.
first of all I never use 5D mark II, I only ever use the mark III, EOS M, 700D, so I couldn't really say much about that camera.
For me it's all depends on the budget.
As of today I think Crop Mood is the most reliable Magic Lanter Build.
But you'll better quality with 5D mark III, minus live view problem, it is so unreliable. maybe we still need to wait a little longer for that.
and I agree to what you said, I think 5DIII is a better Photography camera than 700d and 5DII.
But like I said it's all depends on budget, if you are on tight budget, I think 700D will do just fine. but if you have more maybe should really consider 5D mark III.
well, that's just my opinion and I'm still learning too about Magic Lantern, so please just take my opinion as a consideration and maybe do some more research about this topic.
I got the canon mk 2 and use magic lantern as my main driver, full frame will give you better results over the crop censor however the canon 5d3 is a better camera than the 5d2 I would go for the 5d3 over the 5d2 better pay a little extra for for it, the auto focus system is better too. Magic Lantern is a way to unlocking hidden gems in the camera that canon firmware dont support, so if anything happens to your camera while running magic lantern is like breaking the warranty of service for the camera.
Hi I have used all cameras from EOS M 5D2 700d and 5D3. Save your money and go for the 5D3.
Thanks for the video. I am struggling to enable 4k capabilities on 5d m3 using magic lanterns. I installed 4k crop from their nightly builds but under video menu there is no option to change the video resolution. Can you help me how to correctly install the magic lantern and enable 4k capabilities?
You should try Danne's build, I've put the link in the description.
Great footage!!! Do you never have any skipped frames? I tried the Danne´s release but in spite of fast cards it´s always skipping ... (see my video 1 year ago) So I stick with full HD ML in 25 fps. Another experience: If I shoot 5k or Full HD, the size of video files of the same lenght is almost the same !
As you can see in this clip, I have not experience it so far. And for the file size I also notice that and that is the thing that I never know why.
could you share the color grading tutorial? cause my mlv footage looks so vintage old color no like modern cameras
Sure man, I plan on doing so. Thnks for watching my video
What's the record time for 5.7k and what resolution gives you continuous recording?
for 5.7K I get continuous recording time, as long as I use card Spanning, SD Overclocking, Kill Global draw and don't overexposed, I get same result in UHD 1:1 except need to be lowered at 12bit, and the footage is comparable to my sony A7Siii
here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/HuZF1AzjIo4/v-deo.html
Which lens did you use?
It's the Tamron 24-70mm SP G2
this looks way better then Eos M, I thought ML was only available for 5dMii or earlier
Yeah agreed, in my opinion 5diii with ML is the best. But you need to know that in this video I'm using a much better lens, than in th eos M video, so it probably affects the video quality. Next I'll using the same lens for the EOS M
Anywat Thnk you for watching my video.
@@mzartFilms I’m on the cusp of buying something , unsure if I should buy M, 5d, 650d, 700d
Hello. What is better to take? Canon 700D with ML or Sony ZV-E10?
Personally If I have the budget, I'll take the zv-e10.
@@mzartFilms Do you think it’s also quite suitable for cinematic shooting with settings and post-production? Because unfortunately there is no way to overpay for the same 5DM3
To be honest, yes. Don't get me wrong 5dm3 is a good camera. But the autofocus zv e10 is much better. I use zv e10 for my wedding film. And it works fine for me
@@mzartFilms Thank you very much for your answer, because I doubted my choice for a very long time. Canon is naturally very good too)
Yeah man, glad if that could help., Every camera have their own strength in my opinion. It's just matter of what works best for our needs. And for me AF and good 4K is my top priority for the work that I do. So it can be different for others
good job, does it have clog as well? looks like the real deal for video.
unfortunately Magic Lantern won't give us C-Log, but better than picture profile a RAW video
If overclock the sd card to 240 mhz, you don't need to have global draw off to have continuously recording on 5.7k anamorphic 14 bit raw.
It's just for peace of mind, and if global draw off the SD card write speed goes up I'm too lazy to change it, because I really like to use UHD Mode. And with SD card that I use only it only support 160Mhz top at 192Mhz
How do you do this?
In 5.7k Anamorphic, is the live view full width with real time preview?
Or is it choppy and cropped in?
@@shueibdahir realtime preview, but low resolution. if hdmi out to external monitor, it is cropped but high resolution preview.
@@testingtesting58715 Damn. That's not good. If it had full width real time preview it would kill all magic lantern cameras. 700D is the best right now in my opinion
Mas which one that you prefer actually. I planned to buy 700d or eos m or 5d markiii.
Man, that's a really hard question actually.
I think it depends on the budget. 5Diii is better in terms of quality, but the ML build isn't as good as on the eos-m and 700d. For now I think eos-m is the best option if you plan to use it with magic lantern.
@@mzartFilms noted. Thank u so much. I used it ad my second camera only for my travel... I just wannna trus to have some footage that look a like movie.
is CANON 5D MARK III producing 5.7K 14bit with ML or it is upscaled?
to be honest, I'm not really sure. I think it is an upscaled footage. but the quality is far more better than the native 1080p on 5diii
This what you used is anamorphic video. It uses the full frame and the result is 5,7 k footage@@mzartFilms
@@richardremit's actually 4.4MP which is 55% of the resolution of 4k but over double that of full hd
How long is one shot raw 14 bit max?
It'll go until your card is full
@@mzartFilms That's so great! So what is the capacity for 1 minute of recording?
I think it's about 5GB, I'll give update to you, I need to check it first, just to make sure
And user manual focus tracking? I am very concerned about focus by 5D M3!
@@mzartFilms
Hi, I use Lexar 1066X CF memory card and Sandisk 170MB/s SD card, but I can only record fullhd but not 5k7. What settings do I need to enable to shoot 5k7? Thank you!
Did you use Danne's latest build?
@@mzartFilms is that? I don’t know
@ I've put the link in the description to Magic Lantern Danne's build, and I'm using firmware 1.2.3
@ I planned on making video about, the setting that I used to achieve this resolution.
@@mzartFilms yes, i use firmware 1.2.3, but not record at 5k7
