I work for an agency that has a ton of 9:16 content for our client social media accounts. Because of that, I started shooting on the iPhone 15 Pro Max because I was feeling so tired at the end of the day with my vertical mounts and heavy rigs, it made no sense. I've been having a PHENOMENAL time using the Blackmagic App recording to an SSD that I have in a MagSafe wallet so it's all contained easily. It's in a PolarPro case where I can use all my ND and polarizer filters. The stabilization in the Blackmagic App, is almost good enough to keep the gimbal at home depending on your camera moves. An added benefit of using a depth map would completely change the game once again. What I'm doing now, no one can tell it's an iPhone. Using Strada in the future and utilizing depth maps....well come on! A dream!
Cheers to some of your points about camera accessibility and enabling people to have a tool to learn on. Also your reference to the Sony PD 150 and all the cameras in that space. Crazy to think an iPhone has so much more resolution that magically Sony back in the day.😂
Yeah, you’re going to be at 100K minimum before the end of 2024. This is some of the best filmmaking content (subject matter, polish, production quality, information) I’ve EVER seen on UA-cam.
At first I wondered why this video is so staggeringly better than any other content I've seen on UA-cam. It's as if an actual filmmaker and not a content creator was making it. I thought I recognized the face and then I realized it's Michael Cioni and his team. It IS an actual filmmaker using filmmaking techniques and not UA-cam tropes to tell his story. I've had the pleasure of meeting Michael and his team at the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro user group and Cine Gear. Great, talented, smart people pushing the industry forward to a future it didn't know it needed. Thank you Michael and team not just for this channel but all you guys are doing. Now if you could just reimagine the slate for the 21st century...
Haha. That's great! I've been working in movies for 20 years, but I'm brand new to UA-cam so we're doing our best to figure this out. Your encouragement is welcomed - but so is your feedback. Open to ideas so we can make our channel even better! next Tuesday has an episode you won't forget:-)
UA-cam algorithm has been terrible for the last 2 years. I only watch tech, how it's made/works, and basketball videos yet UA-cam keeps flooding my feed with alt right joe rogan bs and incel videos.
I love this perspective. It's not about replacing an established technology or tool, its about being able to unlock the ability to do more with something less. Thank you for being one of the few who thinks this way instead of just constantly comparing and being negative. I hope y'all get super big cause this production quality and overall video is amazing...Goodluck!!
ye but you know, something less could also be to not do all of this stuff showcased in the video, but instead just buy a used zv-e10 for 250$ and probably take another 800$ to buy some lenses, a gimbal and a monitor. You will be much more cheap then an iphone 15 pro, and it will you 100000x better results instead. I dont really see the point this video wants to set, if you take everyhting you can, get vfx artists, use AI and stuff, then you can also make an iphone 11 look cinematic if you know what i mean
Yeah a cinema camera is basically just a brain. It needs a whole production and post production crew to get a really high end, cinematic look (not to mention an extrmely expensive lens. Some cost as much as a new car). But you need a good sensor and image processor in the first place, so the iphone is still impressive.
I think the best part of this video is how you articulate your voice and how candid you switch from subject to subject. Your speaking is seamless and enjoyable to listen to. This is very well made.
Wow! Thanks for saying that! Check out some of the other episodes - there's a BIG story going on here - like a mini-series - that can shed light on lots of areas I think creates and entrepreneurs can leverage.
I have the 15 Pro and am having fun with just it's built in stuff. Not a pro photographer by any means, but this really opened my understanding of what I'm not seeing when doing ordinary videos. Thank you SO much for the work invested into this as it's given me clarity & appreciation for what I have & what can be done.
Wow, that was an amazing video! I loved how it provided us with so many valuable lessons. It really gave us a great insight into how cinematographers think and work.
Instant favorite! Hands down my new favorite channel. I'm diving in your channel and watching all your current masterpieces and can't wait for future cinema grade videos. I was trying to analyze your lighting, BEST THING I HAVE SEEN IN MY LIFE ON UA-cam! Keep creating, your art is exceptional! ♥
That was brilliant! I've sold my Blackmagic 6K pro and lens and gone all in on apple 15 Pro Max and believe it or not, a Google pixel 7a for commercial use. The results are outstanding and production time is slashed.
Hi there, I shot a window shutters commercial on the Pixel 7a. I just lit the set and used a lot of dolly tracking and push zooms at 60fps. I then stabilised the footage in Premiere. The 7a didn't have log just H265 but the results were excellent. At that point, and the type of commercials my clients wanted, I knew the Black magic camera was too bulky and overkill. I purchased the iPhone 15 Pro Max with the 512gb and the Brandon Li case and productibity went through the roof. I also did a 2 week product photoshoot in RAW with the iPhone and again, it blew away any misconceptions of what a smart phone can do.

Thank you Terra! We only started this a few months ago. I've been making films for many years, but never tried to tell stories on UA-cam. New experience for me and excited to help improve the creative process! Suggestions and advice are most welcome from successes like you!
It’s interesting how you put an iPhone with the same tools and accessories that you use with a camera and compare it with a professional camera and I think, for students like me, that like to share stories, but with a super reduced budget, is and will be a good way to start learning about the world of photography and video. I haven’t seen any of your videos but this one has a lot of great stuff that I wouldn’t even think possible. ❤
Thanks for the comment. You might want to check out Episodes 23, 24 and 26 and you'll see how we took advantage of low-budget (off-the-shelf) technology and we listed the prices. You can see how far iPhone can be pushed with a few extra tools and some great lighting!
Supremely done! It’s quite evident that you spent a lot of time and effort in preparing this video. The research is evident in the quality of this video. Keep up the great content this channel is great! It has inspired, hope in me as a new videographer. And kudos on the imagination and innovation you guys have.
I definitely knew everything you were saying and everything you talked about. The depth was cinema pro 50k and the res was monstro focus like seriously so AI.. & the nucleus in the tripod with that beast grip and SD Bluetooth plugin all with the new 4D USB-XY cord, great stuff right there.. 😂🤣 No but seriously, I can see a lot of work was put in like wow, y’all did awesome👏 Even tho the only techy things I do are with digital art and whatnot, I subscribed bc this was amazing!
You’ve got a great screen presence, almost like a “Vsauce” personality in the film industry. Great content! Although I don’t think iPhones ever will replace true cinema cameras, there is no doubt it makes “basic” filmmaking more accessible for the general public - professionally, for better or worse.
Davinci studio has an excellent depth map feature built in, same with nuke! Definitely an amazing tool paired with the iPhone. This might be a stretch but more vfx stuff would be awesome! Would love to hear a vfx supes perspective on the iPhone aces workflow. Going over tonemapping like agx etc. awesome video, just subbed!
Tbh as a cinematographer myself I don’t consider shallow depth of field as crucial to a cinematic image. Only separation between foreground and background which can be done on the iPhone with its subtle depth of field or through lighting and composition. This is because some of the most beautiful films of the past where shot on apsc sized film stock at f5.6 which is quite deep to me It’s just had to be a stylistic choice
Infact one of the obvious signs of a low end budget production is the overuse of shooting with thin DOF(usually to cover up for the lack of set and lights). Using large format is more than just a DOF thing.
@@vlcheish absolutely! Having shallow depth of field is a resent trend. In the past most cinematographers were chasing a sharp image above most things especially because you didn’t have a live high res image that you could instantly watch back to see if you missed focus or if the lens was sharp wide open (a more than you thing where almost unusable at anything under 2.8). And let’s not forget fluctuations in the gate, the focus could shift very slightly with every frame as the film moved through the camera, despite all the calibration, so at f1.4 you could sometimes see focus shift the smallest amount on static shots.
I completely agree. So much of the look is dependent on the grade and lighting, and the IPhone with only the grade and without the mapping looked really good.
Strada, So much in-depth research, information, and a rich knowledge of photography. This is a well-researched content. It's almost like a movie videography class. Why would someone go this length in creating a UA-cam content instead of rehashing what we all already know? Instead, he went the extra mile just so he could give us a trailer load of value. Is there a way I could give this video 10 stars🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟?
Wow. Thanks for sharing that! I’m so glad you found value here. I’m new to UA-cam but have been making movies for a long time. Or I’m trying to take my experience and build a new tool called Strada to help everyone with the most advanced (easy) workflow. Thanks for the comment!
This is actually insane. Due to the minimal focal length of the iPhone it will allow for better post production where you can choose your focal length in post instead of live on set. Especially if you would use a Lidar sensor to create the 3D map of your image, you would easily be able to identify close or far objects and based on this would be able to adjust a cinematic-like blur to the iPhone image
I thought i was watching this on Apple's channel for a sec, how are you only at 3.6K subscribers with this quality of production and delivery. Made me truly appreciate the new iPhone for the first time. Subscribed!
Very welcome! Stay informed with us as we get close to launching a new cloud platform for artists! And, you know, binge our backlog of Episodes - some nuggets in there (EP 13 is my personal fav)
This is beyond incredible. Not just, what we are able to achieve on the new iPhones, but also how you told the story in this video. Very well done, gained a new sub here! Keep it up!
I like your content, but the shouting and fast talking are hard on my ears and it feels rushed. Anyway, thanks for all the info about shooting with the iPhone and the depth mapping.
Here’s the thing… I appreciate what you’re trying to accomplish. I’m also admittedly excited to the growth in development of these iPhone cameras. I think in another 5-10 years that we could literally be looking at them the same as a cinema camera. I also understand that some people have limited resources. But the lengths one must go through to do what you’re talking about to achieve that look, is it just more financially viable to spend the extra money to rent a cinema camera or hire a DP that already has their own camera?? What’s the difference in the end financially?
I concur. To be clear: I DID hire a DP (and gaffer and AC). No one gets great images on any camera for free. It gets easier with dynamic range and Apurture lights, etc, but you need great talent to get great images. That's not likely to change. I happen to have all this gear, so wrapping it around an iPhone instead of an Alexa is actually kinda easy when cages and cables are laying about. But if I HAD to make this work on a budget, the Nucleus + Beastcage + USB Hub is really all you need on Bogen sticks. That would be $2000 all in and you COULD do wireless video over AirPlay (Apple lets you do this with the Blackmagic Camera App). It's latent, so certainly not ideal, but it's free. That said, I still don't think anyone would ever do this. But it's how we establish foundations and get inspirations on what we COULD do. The 5D wasn't actually very good in 1080p, but people solved the gaps and it led to all the robust solutions we currently have. If I had to make a prediction, RED, Arri and SONY don't go away in 10 years, but I do think Apple will be in the mix.
@@Michael_Cioni Completely agree! And I greatly appreciate the response! I re-read what I wrote to you and was worried it came off as pessimistic, and that’s not at all what I was trying to convey. I love the thought process and you have an engineer’s mentality in how you approach problem solving! I think, much like your video proved, that we are on the verge of these iPhones becoming actual cinema cameras. With where they’re at now I think I would be very willing to shoot something basic, easy, and experimental with it. It’s worth that much for sure! But for projects where I obtain a little budget $3,500+ I’m gonna stick to Arri and RED. But certainly in the past I never ever considered an iPhone and now I’m intrigued and keeping my eye on where they’re going. Thank you again! Love the video 🙏🏻
As an apple sceptis i really loved when you described USB C as "new". Sencond part is when it is said that "you are not gonna shot a move on a cinematic mode" :D
Truly inspiring. I’ve been stubborn on creating more content instead of my Canon R5 and after watching this I’m adding things to the cart and brain storming ideas to capture with my 15 pro max!
Being a music producer this video took a fighter jet soaring miles above my head!!!!lolol but I actually learned a lot about using my phone to shoot video...great job!
Hahaha. Well, FWIW, it means a lot. I'm new to UA-cam but been working on movies for a long time, so I'm glad you found value. Let me know what else you'd like to see and learn!
I was shocked to see that this channel has 8.25k subscribers. With this kind of production quality you should have much more than a millon followers....I wish you the best for your journey 😊....And thank you 😊
this video is crazy good, I thought there is no channel that would produce this quality of a video. I hope you guys do it every year a new model comes out (leaks says apple is including a bigger sensor, a 14 bit converter, and more for better videos)
Make the app! You will do well. I travel all over the world and need a small rig. This is a great example of if you have the right lighting, you can make it look just as good for the untrained eye in which is 95% of the people out there. Telling the story, now that’s a different subject all in itself.
If you travel all over the world just get an fx30, man. It's gonna require the same amount of bits and bobs to put a working rig together. Even less than this, actually.
5:40 Be Still My Heart... I knew this day would come. After waiting since 2008.... (using the iPhone 4) for "B" roll... NOW... WE CAN and WILL... make a movie with APPLY iPhone... Holy Moley.... I am so EXCITED.
My major problem with the iPhone was not the features it included, rather the whole compatibility with the ecosystems that I am using, and TypeC has drastically changed this. Previously to even consider using iPhone as a viable option you had to buy multiple adapters which would total to the cost of just buying a brand new iPhone in the process. But now using the Blackmagic camera hooked into an SSD has made this such a dream to work with. I’ve done a few shots for our company and I never tell them what I use to see if they can tell the difference. You’d be surprised the dumbfounded look when you tell them the ip15 can compete with a mirrorless camera. Cheers for this and I wish your channel much success, but you probably wont need it given how much production quality and information goes into it to make this a stellar success
You're making a great point. And I have some new info that you might like: in our next Episode (EP 23) we did exactly as you said and took the iPhone "standard" or "off the shelf" accessories and tried to use them and shared the pricing. That comes out on March 19th. I think you'll get a lot from it and it addressees some of the points you made. Thanks for the comment!
Phenomenal work here, great test and great configurations. One of those rare times you look at the sub count and are left blown away at the production value and content, Totally thought you had a millions subs
I had done some fun b-roll videos for myself cos all I had was an iPhone X base model. I had fun. Time got in the way. Now, a few years later…. I see this and now I wanna shoot again. This time a sci-fi short film. Call me crazy. One day, I’ll let someone else do it but for now the 15 will have to do.
i tested the 15 series in the mall and i gotta say, the video is impeccable. i hope you try it on those pro camera branded phones with the Leica and Hasselblad co-developed like the Xiaomi and OnePlus
still no shortcuts in pretty pictures. Get a great crew, colorist, and rig that is easy to maneuver and the iPhone 15 sensor in log can do a lot more than people expect. But bad lighting hurts every camera, no matter how expensive.
@@Strada-Tech Yeah, tried to explain that to my "boss" who wanted me to shoot stuff for social media and showed me clips of "what the iphone can do". He just would not understand that you need good lighting to achieve such cinematic results...its like talking to a wall. :D
thank you! I'm new to UA-cam but been working on films for 20 years. So I'm hoping to build an app that helps creatives everywhere. More videos to come!!
I hope that's a good thing? We only started a few months ago. I've been in the movie business for 20 years and am dripping-wet-new to UA-cam. So hoping to tell great workflow stories with a new technology we're building to serve the creative community!
There are many things I’d like to say. First, depth of field is the only thing I like about small sensors - actually when shooting with fX3 I try to shoot with closer aperture if possible . I think that’s a very interesting experiment . Of course, we are talking in the video about more than 10,000 dollars of equipment , which means that in reality you could buy a camera and lens and make it with more ease , but the proof of concept is very nice :-)
Brilliant, thank you for producing this video. As an experienced cinematographer, I've frequently captured quick pickup shots for productions using my iPhone in the past. However, Apple's demonstration of shooting their event with an iPhone 15 Pro Max caught my interest. Following the release of Blackmagic's Cam App, I made the decision to sell my Sony A7siii system and transition to an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Currently, I'm in the process of designing new rigs for this intriguing camera.
I usually don’t subscribe to channel based on one video. But the quality storytelling and the execution is phenomenal on this. You have gained a subscriber, Keep making these.
Thank you for saying that! Really appreciate it. There's a great story being told here way back from Episode 1! Feel free to check it out. My favorite episode block is 13, 14 and 15. Very powerful concepts in there. or if you like the Apple tech being pushed to the limits, check out Episodes 23, 24 and 26! Thanks for the comment:)
Been pushing it since 2016 with the iPad Pro v1 I made some great videos on that. Then the iPhone 13 now the iPhone 15 pro. I can definitely see a difference in quality in 13 and 15 pro editing on my iPad Air m2 Davnci app is now easy like on my desktop studio version. I usually used my gh5 or bmpcc 4k fully rigged out but the iPhone 13 took over for run and gun personal projects but I’m going to rig this 15 pro to the max like I did in 2016 with the iPad Pro but that didn’t look good people laughed hard at me but I made a video that didn’t do too bad. Stay strong do your own stuff fcuk everyone else’s projects do yere own. Peace
As someone who literally buys all the flags ship iPhones like no joke I just upgrade from a 14 ProMax to a 15 ProMax as soon as the 15 ProMax came out and in my opinion I think for me it’s a good purchase because I take way too many photos and videos. Some of the photos and videos I take are in really hard settings for normal phone cameras and in general I always use the highest setting for the iPhones. But I don’t have much interest into buying actual cameras and I love just researching Apple tech so it’s perfect for me.😊
Yes... hopefully apple introduces a proper lens mount for their iPhone Pro... I too see it coming... larger sensor too... hmm. I just subscribed... you speak the future as always... great content.
This is STRADA content is spectacular......good good..... Very good work Mike!! Keep going year killing it. Everything is so good.....every aspect of a video presentation....information, audio , video.....just flat out great.
Crazy how films prior to 1990's had way less tech yet they reign supreme in cinema history.
0:00 a smooth sea will never create a skilled sailor.
yep, even rewatching stuff in 4k without cgi and using practical effects and models they still look absolutely stunning and believeable.
There is a reason why Christopher Nolan still shots on film.
Because “we can fix it in post” wasn’t a thing.
shooting in film beats digital.

Would love to hear a vfx supes perspective on the iPhone aces workflow. Going over tonemapping like agx etc. awesome video, just subbed!
Its amazing how flexible and accessible the technology is today.
Goosebumps.
You should deliver a TED talk at a high school… could def see that be a reality. Clichés from antiquity + redundant deliveries 👌🏻
Tbh as a cinematographer myself I don’t consider shallow depth of field as crucial to a cinematic image. Only separation between foreground and background which can be done on the iPhone with its subtle depth of field or through lighting and composition. This is because some of the most beautiful films of the past where shot on apsc sized film stock at f5.6 which is quite deep to me
It’s just had to be a stylistic choice
Its been a while since i sat down an PAYED ATTENTION the whole video, perfect to the last detail, subbed right away
Awesome video Michael, those shots looked incredible.
Thanks for your rig suggestions!
I am so unimaginably excited by this technology and the fact that I can minimize the size of my gear and create with my iPhone. Thank you so much!
This amazing
Great information! Can you provide an equipment list? Thanks! Again.
List of the background music used would also be nice!
Subscribed!
Holy shit I didn’t even realize the size of this channel until the end of the video. Good luck growing this whole thing up, the quality is insane!
Refreshing content. Excellent presentation and production. Thanks for the fresh perspective.
Very welcome! Stay informed with us as we get close to launching a new cloud platform for artists! And, you know, binge our backlog of Episodes - some nuggets in there (EP 13 is my personal fav)
This was excellent. Hope to see you guys around town!
This is beyond incredible.
Not just, what we are able to achieve on the new iPhones, but also how you told the story in this video.
Very well done, gained a new sub here! Keep it up!
It would be interesting if Apple were to make a camera body. I wonder what lens mount they would use 🤔
I agree. It’s still an expensive set up.
Intro was bit much man
Bang, and just 8 months after this video news have hit that Danny Boyle shot '28 Years Later' on the iPhone 15 pro max!
Hahaha! He's not the first, but he certainly won't be the last!
BROOOS, THIS THING IS MINDBLOWING!!!!!
it's too awesome!!!!!!
Being a music producer this video took a fighter jet soaring miles above my head!!!!lolol but I actually learned a lot about using my phone to shoot video...great job!
you can't beat computational photography
i am amazed you arent at anything less than 100k. this video was easily a 10/10
Damn you for making me push that subscribe button and twisting my arm until i hit all notifications! Good stuff and I’m glad i found this channel.

Be Still My Heart...
I knew this day would come.
After waiting since 2008.... (using the iPhone 4) for "B" roll...
NOW... WE CAN and WILL... make a movie with APPLY iPhone...
Holy Moley.... I am so EXCITED.
Awesome video guys, I'm so impressed. We need this AI tool, that's crazy !
Holy moly this is great!
I KNEW when I saw this was STRADA
This was going to be a Great Video even before I turn it on.
Phenomenal work here, great test and great configurations. One of those rare times you look at the sub count and are left blown away at the production value and content, Totally thought you had a millions subs
i love your optimism🙌 I think that's what we should do as a creatives; to utilize every tool creatively.
This is fun and challenging for those of us who are merely hobbyists! Great info!
Really good video thank you
brooo your script writing for this video is fireee
dude this video is AWESOME! nicely done!
Thank you! Check out Episodes 23 and 24 and 25! If you liked this episode, we did some crazy tests for those episodes!
i tested the 15 series in the mall and i gotta say, the video is impeccable. i hope you try it on those pro camera branded phones with the Leica and Hasselblad co-developed like the Xiaomi and OnePlus
Wow, man. It just goes to show that it's not about the gear but about lighting and story telling. iPhone is incredible!
still no shortcuts in pretty pictures.
this is absolutely top tier bro.
thank you! I'm new to UA-cam but been working on films for 20 years. So I'm hoping to build an app that helps creatives everywhere. More videos to come!!
Good stuff Michael ! nice to see ya again..
I was mindblown when I saw the subscriber count right after watching the video.
This is amazing. I came here from your interview in Office Hours Global. Great stuff
this video is beautifully done. good luck with the algorithm
How is this going? I just started my own production company and looking to add Iphone 15 pro max to the mix. Looking at gimbals, filters and such.
This was very funny. I admire you pushing the limits because the revolution is coming. It’s not the phone I’m scared of, it’s those VR.
Thanks for the comment:)
dude what an incredibly researched, informative, enjoyable, well produced and interesting video!!!!
Thanks for the compliment! Check out Episode 23 and 24! If you liked EP18 you'll love the episodes!
Amazing video!!!!
Peace
Such an informative and well explained post! wow! Excited to have all these technological options! We came along way baby! ;) Subscribed! 👏
And this is a brilliant take BTW! Really well done 🤘🏻🧠🤘🏻
But I don’t have much interest into buying actual cameras and I love just researching Apple tech so it’s perfect for me.😊
take videos whenever you can of random momments, bellive me your futuer self and kids wil be very thankful.
@@haidara77 yep that’s one reason why I always get new phones because I think random videos and pictures so much of them😅👍
Yes... hopefully apple introduces a proper lens mount for their iPhone Pro... I too see it coming... larger sensor too... hmm. I just subscribed... you speak the future as always... great content.
i subscribe to this channel because of this video sir, thank you
the narration feels similar to Leonard Hofstadter's mannerisms, it like I'm watching him in this video
Great work
this is beautiful
The best video I have watched in the history of UA-cam
How the heck does this channel only have 4k subs! your content is amazing!
we just started:) Appreciate you subscribing and telling your friends! We have some great stories and technology coming!
This is STRADA content is spectacular......good good..... Very good work Mike!! Keep going year killing it. Everything is so good.....every aspect of a video presentation....information, audio , video.....just flat out great.
Wow! Thanks, Thaddeus! Glad you could check it out. Episode 13 is my personal favorite:-)
