- In this video I'm trying the newest Magic Lantern Crop Mood
this is Danne's custom tweaks for CropMood Build.
it unlock a few more features.
and in this video I'm comparing the quality of the footage with this build againts my Sony a7sIII, to see if any of you can tell the difference. I try to color match the footage the best that I can. Magic Lantern CropMOOD doesn't not make the EOS-M a better camera than my A7sIII but its helps the camera to be more useable even in 2024 (12 years after it's initial release).

If the lighting conditions are good, the imaging results of the two cameras are indeed very similar. However, in dimly lit scenes, Sony's noise suppression will definitely be better. But the price difference between the two cameras is huge. Canon's Magic Lantern system has indeed revitalized the old EOSM。Your video production is very helpful to me. Thank you for sharing
Yes definitely, as you just said. for me the difference is in the noise and the sharpness. If back then canon release this camera with dual pixel AF, I think this camera could be my main camera today.
@@mzartFilmsone question: did you notice the ISO 100 of the EOS M and ISO 800 match in terms of exposure? Slog3 in iso 800 is actually iso 100. Same goes for slog3 iso 12800. That one is actually iso 1600. Slog3 boosts the exposure by 2.5-3EV leading the iso to go up.
So taking that into account and resolves noise reduction then they should be equal in terms of noise at iso 100 for the M and iso 800 for the sony

Of course, the difference in price does not allow us to say that there is a very big difference, but the eye can clearly see where the camera is more expensive

I got them all right! Maybe because I use the M for my daily use…
The nuances are subtle. Color science perceived after grading or how smooth the dithering is harder to pick out than simple things like resolution or contrast.
I am glad that people show how good this camera is and that they don’t need something very expensive to get good results.

what lens did you use for each camera? feels like sony has a better lens than the canon. pretty easy to realize which one is which. but the dinamic range is really similar hard to tell the different between the two cameras. Really good video!!
On sony I'm using Samyang 50mm F1.4 mark II, on canon I'm using tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2
I think that only people who used magic lantern (and know which artifacts they could encounter) could find the difference. But I still had hard time finding:)

thanks a lot, really appreciate it! actually I'm really surpised while making this video that the footage from eos-m is holding up pretty well. one thing that I notice is the only diffence was noise. a7siii is cleaner, but with youtube compression, I don't know if noise on eos-m will be shown

haven't try that, but just disable the raw option. but eos-m have 30min record limit.
I could tell in some shots that it was the Sony due to the sharpening. The one's that I got tripped on were the flower shots. Way to close to differentiate.
yes, the sony is definetly sharper and cleaner. but like you said in the flowers scene, if we have enough light footage from eos-m is really good.

Great comparison! 👍In outdoor shot sky is better exposed on Camera B. Btw never experienced a crash on MLV app (I am using windows).

Canon's footage looks a bit soft than the Sony, and I find that very amusing. I love the comparison, thanks for doing this! 👌

woooo, B sony, knew it, was the slight blur from the full fframe sensor size, and looking further at skin the sony has more detail
But cam B is sharper, dude…
1:36 shots was the only time I could tell the difference by the amount of detail in your hair in the dark area. Every other shot looked identical

no, actually it's a different lens. I'm using tamron 24-70 zoom lens on eos-m so I can match the crop factor on fullframe.

Depends, when set to 10bit, mostly until card full or hit the 30min record limit.

When you record raw there is no 30 minute limit, so you can record until the card is full. I hit 2 hours in a test. I don't remember which settings I used, probably 1080...
Remember to activate exFat in the menu or the camera records only 4 GB. With auto restart enabled you can still record longer, but you'll lose a few frames when the next 4 GB segment is started.
If you're a photographer, you can tell in an instant that camera B is Sony A7sIII. Well, its because you said earlier that you're gonna compare EOS M with A7. Being a photographer you already know a sharper camera with better dynamic range will always be sony. HAd it been comparison of R5 with A1, it would have been a tough game. But anyway, considering price point, canon performed best!. A canon fan here. Waiting for their legendary R1 to arrive.

At first iam guessing the camera A was a sony and camera B is canon but in the dimming situation i change my mind and figure it the Sony was the camera B because the noise reduction the camera have.
yeah, sony's footage is a little bit sharper too. but not much. I think the canon eos-m is really good especially if you have enough light.

Yes, that's is correct and that's the reason why I own a7siii. Of course you'll get what you paid for the premium price of the camera. But again, the eos-m for the price that's an amazing camera.
Ok, go with first kit lens 3.5-5.5 to dark/night park with just a few lamps along the paths ;) . What next ?
1. Helios 2.0 M42, and other caught only in the promotion "Asia" efm lens with 2.8, 2, 1.8, 1.4, Kamlan 1.1 = bring improvement, Im waiting for long shipment 0,95
2. I have speedbooster and yongnuo 35 + 50 from other big promotions and they don't give me as much pleasure as Helios or Kamlan
3. The next step is probably a gimbal, because sometimes recording with a 1:1 crop without a stable support means major shakes and an even more wavy image.

I use Canon EOS-M every day. I recently made a short video about my first hive inspection after a harsh winter.
I caught a Wild Bee Swarm in June 2023. This was the beginning of a new challenge, how to work with the bees.
Most of the shots were taken with Canon EOS-M Crop Mood 5.2K, 12Bit, Canon EF-S 18-135mm.

EOS M is useless without a tripod. I wish more people would mention this. Low weight + no ibis = unusable jittery footage.
