Holy hell, THAT TONE. New to your channel, and already impressed by the playing, the sound, everything! Great walkthrough

Hey Nik, sounded good - loving the Wah vids lately. Would be great to hear a side by side with one of your favs... bang for buck i reckon it would be hanging in there pretty well.
I’m working on a Vox 847 (USA battery only model) at the moment. Have done the true bypass mod and installed the chase tone pot (after watching one of your earlier vids) and so far so good,
Next up looking at a couple of other small mods (vocal mod maybe) and possibly an inductor at some point.

Dude I did one with the Detrix board (but I had some matched nos BC108 in my stach) and chase tone pot but with a Whipple inductor and it sounds great. I'll compare with this sabbadius inductor from Small Bear! I need to compare that!

Nik, I have a Univox Uniwah UW-2, that I saved from the basement at my dad's, He bought it for me in the early 70's. It uses 3 c cell batteries. and has the light circuit controller in it. I think the first time it was used, in a pedal design. It works , but would like to convert it to use my pedal power. and maybe update the sound. any experience with one of these??? Thanks Spike Upgrade options? It is backwards operation.

Thankfully I have one of those mid-60s wahs that's made of all aluminum by Vox. The bottom part of the chassis is aluminum with black paint on it,and I'm sure that anybody else who owns this pedal has had the same problem of this black paint chipping off down to the bare aluminum over the years.but the fact of the matter is it is the absolute best sounding wah pedal I have ever had,and I would not trade it for the world.I have three or four different wah pedals, even though it works by laser,if I'm not using my vox I use my"Steve Vai:Bad-Horsie Version-2".When I'm practicing and playing with a band that's what I usually use.If I am recording I will go get my vox out of the box that it's kept away safely in and use it for recording because nothing else sounds even remotely as good.I'm the guy who used to buy wah pedals & as soon as I got home,I would mess around with the potentiometer and move the gear piece out of the way & get the potentiometer where I wanted it and then put the gear piece back and the pedal would sound nothing like it did from the factory.Basically what I did was gave it a WAAAAAAAAY wider range.and every time I played with Ave and I would always get comments on how good my wah pedal sounded(even if I was just using something I upgraded and my Vox was still at home in the box). I am one of those guys who keeps a wah pedal on constantly.Even when I'm playing rhythm.I find a nice comfortable medium spot to leave the pedal where it sounds great for rhythm and I'll play it that way.The majority of people don't even know. But to my ears it makes all the difference in the world.I can get that Tony iommi type of sound that I want where it sounds like he's got to wah pedal in a half cocked position. That's always been my"schtick"or what you might say my"go-to"tone.

I am not sure cheap parts sound better or worse. Component choices are best made by ear I think, so get the part needed to get the tone if possible, which is where experience with the parts comes in handy. Sometimes getting a certain sound does cost a bit, sometimes not. It depends on the component and what it does in the circuit though. Sometimes just the value being the same gives the same tone, no matter who made the component. Not always though. Inductors tend to vary in sound quite a bit. Pots? I am not sure. if tolerances and values are the same, they tend to sound much the same to my ear. The choice is more about reliability with pots for me, plus feel and how they taper (taper affects the sweep in a wah, which is why changing the pot often makes a difference). Caps? I have mustard caps in my JMP50 clone. I bought it used and it came with them. I put some others in an old JCM800 1987 once. I am not sure they sounded much different (I got them free off my amp fix-it guy). I think op amp ICs can sound different from type to type. They are essentially a microscopic simple amplifier circuit inside a chip, so can sound different like amps do. Diodes is another. How they clip can vary hugely from type to type. I am undecided about resistor types, e.g., carbon comp versus metal oxide. Maybe slightly different sounding, but if I can not hear a difference over my tinnitus, then I think the difference is not worth the hassle :D

Sounds pretty awesome! I really like your wah tone, and your observations about wah.
    I have a 535 mini, that’s pretty cool (?), but I’m not 100% about the mini size?
I have a full size EHX Wailer wah that I’m kind 😒 about? It’s true bypass already, so I’m most of way there. Might just be the ticket for a Lockdown project?

Just fixed an old Cry baby wah and added true bypass. I have another newer broken wah laying around I may have to fix it. Questions for you: do you prefer wah before or after fuzz? The wah I fixed totally eliminated the clean up on my MXR 108 FUZZ unless I turned the fuzz's buffer on. (I hate the tone with the built in buffer on the fuzz) I was using Wah before fuzz. Great Video by the way!

More wah videos is always good, people who think otherwise are missing out, you always put out interesting and toneful stuff Nik. The result sounds great, real nice mid-period Hendrix voweley, squelching quality to it, the stank face partway through says it all.
This seems like a super fun project to take on! I've got a Dunlop "Classic Fasel" wah with guts I wouldn't mind chucking in a bin... Would a simple soldering iron applied with some TLC be good enough to build the board?
