One huge factor that never gets mentioned in wahs and other pedals(I've modded many wahs,Tube Screamers etc..) is the differences in component values...Especially those Allen Bradley CC resistors. They read way high brand new...So you could have a 100k Q resistor that measures like 117k in one wah as an example and values all different from wah to wah....So no magic really, just the overall component tolerence differences and this would also include the inductors and the transistors and the pot and how it sweeps we know is a huge part of it...This has been true with Tube Screamers and that entire line..Love your videos and playing from another musician/guitarist here!

Excellent Video Nik. About two years ago I set out to Clone one of my Vox pedals I had bought in the med 90s. I purchased most of the stuff on line some parts are hard to come by like the sweep capacitors and the Ducati Caps.I was surprised that the 100k ohm did not make much of a difference over the 33k ohm. I tried to get the pedal to sound more Like the Hendrix pedal then the Clyde Mc Coy. Having a hard time finding the boards now. Thanks for making this video. It's the best I have seen so far. c]8-)

It's pretty much the same results as I get with my near mint Top Logo Crybaby & my '67 Clyde McCoy... They sound virtually identical. I prefer the look of the chrome on my VOX but the Top Logo Crybaby is just a little bit thicker & chewier and I prefer your Brybaby too. I built a board for my 90's VOX V-847 using a reproduction Italian style board & used vintage components I got from Kyle Chase of Chase Tone (a great guy to deal with) & I got a couple each of his Tru-Talk 100K & Tru-ICAR 275K pots that I'm really happy with as well - this way I get pretty much the same tone as my vintage wahs & I can leave them at home when gigging (unless I want to show off for some special gigs, lol).
Great stuff bro, Keep up the good work!

  • @markmarshall7939

Awesome stuff! I have a near mint Top Logo Crybaby and it's incredible. Not sure if you ever noticed, but if you compare the black gear track that attaches to the top treadle of the wah and rotates the round gear on the pot, you'll notice the Top Logo Cybaby's has more teeth per inch, meaning there is less distance between the peak of each individual tooth. This translates into a slightly faster sweep & Hendrix loved that faster sweep effect on certain songs.
Not sure if the Clyde's used the same gear rack, but the newer 70's & up wahs have the same gear rack with less teeth per inch as modern production wahs.
Also, inductors differ from pickups in that pickups use wire wrapped around magnets where inductors use wire wrapped around non-magnetic ferrite (rather than magnets as you stated) or even air in place of ferrite material. An exeption to this is the vintage original red Fasel inductors. Tests have shown that a happy accident in sourcing the ferrite material allowed some material used to become slightly magnetized with the small current flowing thru the wire coil on them & this tiny bit of magnetization made the vintage red Fasels have a unique tone that was more saturated & produced more harmonic content.
Stevie Ray Vaughn also liked the early 70's wahs with the brown cube 5103 Japanese made TDK inductors. This 5103 actually made its first appearance around the time of the new Trash Can inductor between late '67 & mid-'68. I have another Top Logo that came with the TDK 5103 and Aarco caps. I also have a Script Clyde with the original red Fasel & it sounds better than the original Halo's. There is a bit of truth to the legendary aura surrounding original the red Fasels. The modern red Dunlop version is nowhere near the original red Fasel. in fact, the modern yellow Dunlop Fasel actually sounds closer to the original red Fasel & original Halo's.

I've had 7 old Budda wahs. Original square gray-and-black label, black oval label, pink oval label. They all sounded different in the amount of bass, mids, treble, dynamic response, output and, of course, sweep...while still retaining a signature "Budda Wah" sound, perhaps due to the inductor used. Some were unacceptable shrill and thin (not due to the pot adjustment). But the good ones do sound nice.

they all sound great but clearly different im shocked how raw the cry baby sounds,i only tried a new one lol but it didnt sound as good as the hw vox the vox bass notes sounded much rawer & fatter more primal.i just brought a new hw vox wah wah what do you think of the new ones & can i make it rawer ??? also ive just brought a roger mayer autographed octivia fuzz pedal as well sounds punchy & very close to jimi on band of gypsies, well he did make it.but i tried 5 out & the roger mayer one had more clarity others had more distortion almost sounding like a distortion pedal.but i want my wah wah to sound raw like yours i dont play clean wah wah just dirty lol.i keep getting called a low down dirty guitarist so im getting my set up right i just brought a maestro 1964 fuzztone fz-1a its got one input & a lead to plug into my guitar sadly the side input is capped off.can i link it to my octivia with a patch cable ???.im told if you link a fuzz pedal before the octivia pedal it makes it go up another octive so it goes up 2 octives.i need an effects board to link 4 effects but im not sure if you lose the perk from having them connected directly, great playing by the way you got the sweet tones nailed & raw just like they should be .i wish i could hear them in the flesh cause on you tube its compressed im a analogue vinyl man .ive got a you tube channel with thousands of top rarities click on my name & created playlists & your find thousands of records most made on small independent labels during the 60,s ive done a list called 60,s garage punk psych rarities its got 1.5 million views its took me over 30 years to get this list together.but if you love raw,mid 60,s garage has got fuzz organ tape echo guitar phrasing its a treasure trove into the true 60,s sonic underground.your be amazed at the quality & originality bands that sound like no other are what i seek.ive opened the door for many people on you tube & its a pleasure to teach people about true musician,s so check me out you wont be disappointed i ask myself this where do you go after jimi hendrix me i stay in the 60,s they play out of their skins its everything or nothing lol peace...

Great video! I have an Italian V846, and an Italian Vox Crybaby like the one you demonstrated. I’ve had them for over 20 years and have always assumed they were made in the late 60s . The V846 - first two numbers of the serial on the bottom are 18 which according to a site I came across recently says it’s a 1975. The first two numbers on the bottom of the Crybaby are 16 which the site says is a 1973. Can you confirm this? A little disappointed that they apparently aren’t as old as I originally thought but both sound great. Crybaby seems to sound a lot more pronounced than the 846 even though the guts look identical. Thanks!

Cool .. I have 8 wahs I won't mention names 3 are on multi fx pedals & one is not too bad .. but the rest I was really disappointed . But I now know at least some things I can try to improve them .. Also In my research found out that nearly everyone has some modifications done .. Anyway True story many Years ago when I lived in London I was invited ( private viewing select crowd only ) to the launch of a new range of round fuzzt type pedals & wahs & the Secret guest was none other than Noel Redding ( Buddy was better ) & there we were in a small Back room with a selection of the new Pedals etc Well He turned on a Full 100 Marshall Rig & the Hum from the pedals was awful .. & then he started to play well I only lasted about a minute with my hands over my ears .. I have always been careful of my hearing So I fled from the shop . If Jimi had been there so many nice guitars & new better stuff .. I think Jimi would have left with me & my mate Back to the Pub with the pretty barmaids & the backroom where we could get stoned & the little music shop next door where you could sit & jam at a pleasant volume & as long as you were cool you could sit there for hours I played a 63 Telecaster .. that I could not afford & have wished I could ever since . So the search for the wah sound I want to have goes on. We do not have Deoxit in this country but I found a similar thing . & Since I started playing slide more I am having fun . Cheers Nik Peace & love to you & yours ( I lived thru the 70's ) & finally it is Cool to say Cool man again .. so keep up the show .. Some excellent playing at the end . I can tell when someone has tone in their hands & not all of that sound was from the pedals plus & I don't give out compliments unless I mean them . You know how to take your time ( on guitar anyway lol ) So many folks rush thru things .. you know lots of notes & sweeping etc but not giving the Notes time to bloom . Stay safe Be cool

@@theriffwniksevigny5473 I've had them all practically over the years and the vintage 60s one with the reddish brown "Ring"inductor sucked beyond description but Bill Krinard (Two-Rock Amps founder) looked at me like I was crazy for asking 25 bux and swooped on it from me even tho I knew then it was worth more, to me, it was a dog. I had the stack of dimes too once I think it was early 70s but it sounded better than the doughnut inductor type but not as good as both TDK's that Ive had and still have one. granted your wahs sounds pretty damed good! and great demo - but I'm a defender of the TDK inductor because it's actually a fasel housed differently is all... and I find it odd there's SO MUCH propagated Hype about how Awful the TDK ones are when it is simply not true however you turn it... in-fact quite the opposite as they can be some the BEST fullest resonant vocal and watery Wah's out there. . I don't believe the forums biases about the subject anymore than a random dude saying he modded Hendrix's pedals but appreciate the the link for consideration matters. that said, It's still highly probable that Jimi ended up using ones with the TDK's as he actually had hoards of them of them, from what I hear... thanks!

Wah's are easily my favorite. Vox Wah's specifically and it's not even close for me.

@@theriffwniksevigny5473 Man I'll tell you something crazy. I have this one from like 1998 and it is fanTASTIC but a few years ago it went out and I've searched high and low for a way to have it fixed and literally there are ZERO techs that I can find that will work on it for me and they tell me it's impossible to fix. I even got a hold of a guy I learned about from the Guitologist's channel who told me he would call me back later that day and he never did and I STILL can not get that thing fixed. Do you know ANY way that I can get it fixed? I absolutely adore that pedal and have never found one to satisfy me like that one does but I'm totally clueless on electricity and have no idea how to fix it. I'm in east TN and do you know any single person I could have to fix it for me? ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

This video made me realize how bad my crappy reissue Vox wah is. I wonder if theres a kit for modding it to make it any better.

@@theriffwniksevigny5473 Playing is fun but tweaking and working on our own stuff is cool too brother....Back in the early 2000s I probably modded close to 100 pedals for guys on the Seymour Duncan Forums and local guys here in Florida...Did quite a few wahs, but mostly Tube Screamers(Clones) and most of the Boss OD/Distortion pedals...Started having issues with my eyes and stopped, but I'm still constantly tweaking on my own stuff....Love it..We were all really big and into magnet swaps in our Duncan pickups too..LOL...

DogDaze66, You have to be kidding right? Either that or you've never played a wah from the 60's or heard one in person.
The combination of the low gain transistors used then (which gave increased fullness & low end without adding gainy distortion like the modern high gain ones), the carbon composition resistors, the unique sweep of the ICAR pots (the original 60's Allen-Bradley pots had an almost identical sweep to the ICAR believe it or not), the composition of the capacitors & even the bipolar Ducati cap along with the unique voicing added in from the red Fasel, small & large hole Halo, Trash Can & early TDK 5103 inductors all add up to wah pedals that give a full, throaty, vocal & even quacky type tone compared to today's tame, sterile sounding offerings. Even Dunlop's new Handwired Clyde McCoy sounds nothing like the original due to the factors indicated previously.
