      Hey I was wondering what you were able to do in a dental office at 15? I’m a teenager and have really been looking into this career. I talked to my dentist and he said he would love for me to come and shadow my hygienist. But is it possible for me to get a job there as a teen?

    • @Hales462
      @Hales462 3 роки тому +8

      @@marleemcdonald8433 Hey that is so awesome! So the only thing different now in dental offices is that they mainly use computers to enter any and all patient information. When I started they hired me as a “file girl” so I would make sure all patient charts were out for the day that coordinated with the schedule and the following days for the week. If a doctor or hygienist needed a patients chart I would go get it for them and I would arrange the charts back in alphabetical order. I also would help them do garbages or shred paperwork. I’m sure the dental office you are interested in probably does not use charts anymore. I would ask him if there is a position for you to start almost as a “floater” so you kind of just go around and help with little things. Eventually after staying at the same office for so long I was able to learn so much. After I learned enough and proved that I could do more work, they would let me do more and more things like help clean the room after patients, answer the phone, check patients in, bagging and cleaning instruments, pouring up models, and so much more. You might think there is not much you can do in a dental office if you don’t know anything about dentistry but there is a lot I’m sure you can help them with! I think shadowing a hygienist is an amazing experience! If they don’t have room for a floater type person then definitely do the shadowing but hopefully they have room for someone who is passionate and wants to learn and get experience in the dental field. I would also call other offices and see if they are looking for a specific person who helps out around the office. I worked at a private office that was pretty big wirh a lot of patients so it was kind of like a family environment opposed to a office that’s more corporate owned! Sorry for the story but I’m happy to answer every and any other questions you have!!

      @@alexism.7712 a LOT of info about things I never knew you would need to know as a RDH! Every school is different obviously, but my school here we take anatomy & physiology, head & neck anatomy, etc. All very interesting but HEAVY, science based material. I am currently in 8 classes so just don't have much free time. A lot of people think all we do is clean teeth - but MUCH more to it behind the scenes...The beginning is a lot of theory based learning, where as when we progress it will be more hands on and less theory which I will enjoy more! Hands on clinics is what I'm enjoying most right now. Slowly starting patient work in our school clinic in 2021. If you are considering this career route - prepare yourself for a LOT of study time.... :) but no awesome job comes easy! Hope that helped!!

    Very personal question here for me! I'm currently finishing prerequisites for a dental hygiene program in Arizona. Is it common for dental hygienists to have had quite a bit of work done to their own teeth or do they usually have naturally great teeth? I ask because I've been a grinder all my life with very brief mouth guard wear. I think my teeth need a lot of cosmetic work done because they are ground down in the back and the enamel is suffering, as well as some gum recession. The front teeth are pretty short also. Is it going to be completely awkward in class having the issues I have before I can get some of it cosmetically fixed? Thanks for the great videos as well!

      Don’t wait ! You still have all the other classes just start you’ll figure it out when you get to that part. If you have any time go ahead and switch over to working in a dental office example :front desk and Dental assistant. That might help , my boss is very supportive of me going to hygiene school and is very flexible .❤

    Is being in your 40s to old to change careers, I'm ready thinking about going back to school for dental hygienist. What's your take on this? Some advice please 🙂

    • @alexism.7712
      @alexism.7712 3 роки тому +6

      I'm thinking about it as well and I'm in my 40s. Being older does make you feel as though you can't or shouldn't change careers or even start one. I need to stop second-guessing my own self because as long as we're able to learn the material and apply it then we can do it. There is a 56 yr old woman that wants to switch careers and go into sonography who asked a question like yours. I believe we can do it if this is something we really want to do. We're not the only older ones thinking about it or doing it as a career. So if you really want to do it, Gor for it!

    Hello,
    I got self-ligating braces last week (after having the tongue crib on since a month). But now, my whole tongue is a mess- unlike the lips where the sores are visible, there doesn't appear to be any on the tongue surface, but it hurts all over (even spitting is such a chore now). Also, if I happen to run my tongue over the crib, it gives off a tangy, mettallic taste which wasn't as pronounced before (why is that so?) . There is a bit of discoloration (brownish) in the dorsal surface as well. Are these due to any defect in my hygiene habits? Also, how should I be cleaning my tongue crib?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    I've been an RDH for 20 years. I think you need to quit sugar-coating some of the things that go on in the dental office. Most dentists will work you like a mule (making you see 15+ patients a day) while they sit in the back and shop, plan their vacations, etc. Most dental offices for the most part are very TOXIC in nature. There are a lot of office politics involved, clicks that form within the office. The dentist leaves your patient's sitting in your room for 20 minutes after you are done (when you are already behind) and then discusses his/her vacation to the Bahama's for another 10 minutes. If your patient is scheduled for 30 minutes and they show up 15 minutes late, they make you see them (when your next patient is already there and on time)... Sometimes you literally don't even have a chance to eat or pee. They double book your columns "just in case" one of the other patient's doesn't show up. You generally have no PTO days or benefits, no 401k... I could go on for hours. Go into nursing if you can. So much more opportunity, flexibility, benefits. And nurses are literally making double what an RDH earns now and the schooling is the same amount of time.
