Yo Bill, i want to ask some things. how long did it take you to start making decent money and whether you were a special case or not ? Also, How bad is the back stuff due to the fact that you are in an awkward position for prolonged times ? Did you feel like the University gave you enough knowledge and hands on experience that you knew how to practice pretty well for the most part ? What are the typical working hours for your average dentist like ? i hope you can answer me as it would put me at peace and help me make my decision.
@@redcastlefan Hi Nokia. With the understanding that 30 years ago the dental landscape was a bit different than it is today, I will answer your questions. When I graduated from dental school, I immediately went into a graduated program in prosthodontics. When I finished my training, I was offered a full time teaching position which paid me a fairly good salary. This allowed me to continue to learn and begin a dental practice from scratch. After 5 years of teaching I resigned because my practice was doing well enough that it was adequate to meet my financial needs. If I were asked by a new dentist for any advice I would tell them to work as much as possible wherever they could to earn as much money as they could and to build up their speed, get as much CE as possible, figure out where and how they want to practice, spend as much time as necessary to find their idea place to live, and go for it. With regards to my back issues....I work 5 days a week, do a lot of dentistry (with very limited attempts to maintain good body position), and have absolutely no physical ailments. However, I work out with a personal trainer 6 days a week so that might have something to do with it.

While others have feared going to the dentist, I’ve always loved it and I’ve chosen to pursue a career in it. Im in my senior year of high school and also earning my Biology Associates. I’m still on the fence because I’m not very good at science (do you think this is a deal breaker ?), but I’m focused on this career path
Definitely not a deal breaker! I didn’t take a science course until my junior year of college. The first couple years of dental school are pretty science heavy, but most of it is review from undergrad and honestly, some people are stronger in clinic, and some are stronger in the sciences. In the science courses you may have to work harder than other students, but as long as you recognize and work on your weaknesses, put the time in, and stay motivated you will do great!

Me and my 2 friends are thinking about being dentist when we get older because we found out that it was a good paying job and we want to know how to take care of our teeth better lol
My wife is a great dental assistant however she is practically a dentist but we're ot able to get the school and or testing to go from were we are to forward my daughter is now 12 and my wife has been taking her to the office where she works since 8 she scales her own teeth now at 12 and cleans her own teeth well Aliso brushes and teach her little 6 year old sister how to I'm watching this while in the dentist lobby and will show it to my 12 years old once home.
I am 12 and I am a 7th grader. I really want to be a dentist. I have always been interested in the dentist and I've always loved to go to the dentist. It's such a fun thing, maybe because I have never had anything go wrong
dear watch dr. Hall Huggings tribute. hope you inform patients well about the risks of a number of treatments and esp .I assume a salary scale is annual salary ? here we use montly salaries
Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely check it out. Informed consent laws require dentists do disclose procedure risks to their patients, definitely a practice that I will uphold when I begin treating patients :) and yes those were annual salaries!
How much do you earn I heard dentist only earn 1 k pound annually like it's better to sit in a convinent store where you can get like 25 pound an hour even if I work 8 hour that's like 200 pound a day and 1000 pounds a seek
My name is Chayse and I am a senior at a small private University I also play D2 for them. Ever since I was 3 years old and my mother took me to the dentist for the first time I have been interested in teeth, to the point that my Dentist had to keep asking me to step back because I was getting in the road. I was a Bio major my freshman year but because of my university's financial issues they cut the major so starting my sophomore year I had to switch to exercise Science as that is what they told me would be the closest to my current major and still very well accepted into graduate schools. I have a 2.9-3.0 cum gpa and hopefully will be 3.2 or higher after this last semester. I still have to take micro bio and organic chem as I can not fit it in my schedule this semester so after I graduate this May I will have to go back part time. I still need to take my Dat as well probably next spring. My goal is WVU dental school as its the closest to me. My parents support me as they know I truly want to do the work but are worried about me not getting in as I'm not the best standardized test taker as well as struggling in chemistry and high level math. So honestly do you think someone in my shoes has a chance of getting into Dental school or should I start looking into other careers? Thank you.
Thank you for watching and for reaching out! I think if dentistry is really what you want to do you should keep going for it. There are a lot of dental students out there who have an undergrad gpa in that range or even lower so don’t let that stop you. Also, take the DAT and see how it goes. Definitely dont be discouraged if your first score isnt what you wanted, you can always retake it. A lot of my classmates took the DAT multiple times and even applied to dental school multiple times, so definitely keep going for it ❤️
TX Med student here... dentistry as a market is saturated. Too many dentists and not enough work to go around. Not putting anyone away from this field, but weigh your income potential vs. student debt burden carefully. Have buddies of mine who couldn't find work after dental school. One found work making in the low 100s. Just food for thought.
I’m beginning to become frustrated with choosing my career. I’m tired of hearing the negativity about professional fields being oversaturated. Yeah, our generation (Millenials and Gen Z) was told to go to college. We were told we could be whatever we want as long as we got our education. We are the most educated; of course, there is an over-saturation. I’m on the fence about doing law or dentistry, and after taking my honors biology course, I’m aiming towards dentistry. I love the field, but I also want to live comfortably and not worry if my bills will be paid or not every month. I don’t like that this is the reality of things.
dentists are still top 5% earners in america, starting wages often reach six figures, and I would predict a decline university and post secondary school attendance with the new era of instant gratification and social media, scaling back the so called “saturation” in the field
They are polar opposite careers. What made you want to do law? You shouldnt do dent for the money it's the worst thing you could do and youll hear the same thing over and over like a broken record from DentalTown (the US dental forum). If you can picture yourself doing precise work within a milimeter and peering into an oral cavity everyday than you might enjoy it however if you have no interest in sculpting, shaping materials or using your hands youll burn out quickly.
@@MrGW2fanboy Did you not fully comprehend what I said? Both careers shouldn’t be done solely for the money. You’re giving unsolicited and irrelevant advice. I used to work in a dental office and the doctors let me observe different procures; with the patient’s consent of course. When I expressed I wanted to be a dentist, my coworkers encouraged me and said they’ll help me any way they can. I have wanted to be a dentist since 2016 but lacked the confidence to take OCHEM. I did my due diligence and learned the basics of each subject I might struggle in to give me room for the difficult sections. My personality fits with dentistry rather than law.
@@bunnyboo78730 Go for it. I apologise if I offended you but you didn't mention those things in your first post so pardon me if I didn't know. Also I don't see how it's irrelevant as I'm simply talking about the common pitfall which is entering dentistry for money and seeing as you were hung up on dentistry and law.
Yes absolutely! I think at the time I made this video (before starting dental school) I didn’t realize how important it is to address dentists as doctors, after all D.D.S. and D.M.D. stand for doctor of dental surgery and doctor of dental medicine 😊
I am thinking of studying dentistry, I'm 15 and I'm not great at biology but I am very good at chemistry. Is chemistry enough to be a dentist? Update: I'm starting uni soon and not doing anything even close to dentistry. I'm doing computer science
Wow, I didn’t even take chemistry or biology until I was 20. You are already starting a great foundation to become a dentist! Bio and chem are both equally important in college and dental school. Sorry if you were hoping you could avoid biology ;) but it really is the foundation for a lot of other science classes you will come across on the road to becoming a dentist. Check out my video ua-cam.com/video/DOJnNKGaXMk/v-deo.html to find out exactly what classes you’ll need to take in college (hint: bio and chem are two of them).
I'm halfway through my third year of dental school right now. I'll tell you this, there's nothing wrong with being a chemistry major in undergrad and if you will make the best grades in that major then by all means do it because you won't even get a shot a dentistry if you don't get in dental school. However, the first two years of dental are like a biology major on steroids! You're taking gross anatomy, physiology, cell biology, general pathology, microbiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, etc. You have on average 2 tests a week and sometimes 3. It's pure memorization and recall from lectures so if you're not good at that then you better get good at it. Being a chemistry major in undergrad might help you get good grades in undergrad but it won't help you AT ALL in dental school because there's no chemistry involved! The fact that chemistry is even a topic on the DAT doesn't make any sense at all. If you can maintain good grades as a biology major then that would help you a lot more when you get in dental school, but like I said you have to make the grades to get in. If you do choose biology or even if you stay chemistry and can take electives I would look at the courses in the dental school curriculum that you want to go to and start taking those classes so you're at least familiarized with the material. I loved biology and that's what I majored in in undergrad. I hated the first year of dental school because of all the lectures and tests. It's like someone offering you a slice of cake and then telling you you have to eat every slice right now. Enjoyable at first and then you're absolutely sick of it by you're your third slice. With that being said, now that I'm in clinic and actually getting to do what I came to school for I really enjoy it. It's just the price you have to pay if it's what you want to do.
I feel like a lot of people want to specialize in ortho because its more laid back.. but that makes it pretty competitive to get into specialty programs.
The most common major is Biology 😊 but you can major in anything as long as you complete the required pre-requisites like chemistry, biology, physics etc…
I’m about to be a senior in high school and really thought i had my mind made up about wanting to becoming a dentist. However, i’ve been watching some videos that got in depth of the downsides of being a dentist and now i’m really second guessing myself?!😩 I’m just wondering if there are any major struggles you had/have being a dentist?
It’s hard work to get into dental school, and I know there are downsides to being a dentist (like debt), but I’m still totally confident that this is what I want to do. I was truly convinced when I started shadowing at dental clinics, which I highly recommend! I think it will really help you either feel confident in your decision, or help you decide if you want to do something else. The other thing is, you dont have to decide right now. I changed my major 3 times, and didn’t even start taking dental prerequisites until my junior year of college. You got this girl!
Jasmine Ahrar that is great! I’m a Freshman in college and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do in life. Then I saw this career and found it amazing, I really like it. However, I’m not sure where to start or what bachelor I need
these videos on youtube about becoming a dentist are very disturbing. i dont want to see and hear a young femaie talk about becoming a dentist like its going to a party and just working whenever u feel like it . no wonder so many people are afraid of dentists and think they are not on the same level as other health care professionals and medical doctors. and unfortunately alot of people that are dentists start their own practice immediately after dental school and i think that is why there are so many bad dentists and i personally think female dentists are not as good as male dentists for alot of reasons and just like most surgeons are men in general so most dentists with great reviews and reputations are men as well .
😄 Thank you for your insight and the info. I fell in love with your conclusion!! I definitely want to give back and make an impact on low-income families and be able to see the the world😄😄🙏💛 I appreciate the new perspective as I am really considering to be a dentist! ~Best of Luck
hello doctor jasmine! this question is unnecessary but can i do anything to like, make my cavities gone? like, home remedies? im sorry if this question is not good :((
I have 2 Year Dental diploma and 4 Years bachelor degree in dental what is the per hours if u have this degree let me know so that if the per hours is less then i should get admission in the DMD or DDS
I think most dental schools don’t have actual sports teams for the students :/ but a lot of my classmates get together to play sports like volleyball, soccer, and basketball.
i'm in my senior year and i'm very scared about going in to this because i'm not a straight A student, do you think it would be fine if i went there without being a straight A student?. and one more thing, do you have any recommendations for any books i should read to get all the information about dentistry before i go in there? this helped me out a ton, thanks!
No need for straight As! I think a good and realistic goal is a 3.3 GPA, and if you can get higher than that, even better. As for reading, I recommend reading anything in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) to stay up to date with what is happening in the dental world.
Great question! I feel like there are a lot of job opportunities for dentists right now, and there will continue to be because the population is growing and people will always need dental care 🤷♀️
@@jasmineahrar Actually, I think the same as you, but the recent news that chine discovered new material for dental diseases was scaring me. Thank you for replying 🫶
Tough decision! Luckily, you dont have to decide any time soon :) try and learn about both from now until you graduate high school. I bet a dentist would even let you come shadow!
Do you have to do 2 science subjects in school to do dentistry in college? I only have the options of bio and physics in my school but I only chose biology. Should I change and do physics too? I just didn't want to do physics because there's a lot of maths

I’m a freshman in high school and I really like to be a dentist 🦷 🪥
Im in my freshman year of college, majoring in Biology. Can’t wait to graduate and go to dental school!
Is biology in college as hard as people say
thank you so much for this information! i’ve always wanted to be a dentist since i was younger :D
Yay so glad you liked the video! Good luck on your dental journey ✨
@@jasmineahrar thank you so much!!
So helpful video to me ...I'm 15 years old and my aim in my life is become a dentist...so got informatiom from you... thank you ❤
Thank YOU 😊
I am 12 and I am a 7th grader. I really want to be a dentist. I have always been interested in the dentist and I've always loved to go to the dentist. It's such a fun thing, maybe because I have never had anything go wrong
That’s amazing!! When you go to the dentist ask a lot of questions. In high school they may even let you come shadow 🙌
dear watch dr.
Love this! Just what I needed
Great video I’m a 1st year dental student here in the UK 🇬🇧 can’t wait to qualify. You made great points.
How much do you earn I heard dentist only earn 1 k pound annually like it's better to sit in a convinent store where you can get like 25 pound an hour even if I work 8 hour that's like 200 pound a day and 1000 pounds a seek
Thank u☺️.Your words were very helpful to me.Continue like this☺️
Thank you!!! 🤍
You just gave what i want thanks
Hello just seeing this is oral and craniofacial surgery not a department
loving your channel :)!!
Thank you so much!!
Can u tell us when u did your DTA exam how many hours u take per day to do study and how u did it and what king of questions comes in DTA
Thanks a lot. Very clearly explained!
A lot of my classmates took the DAT multiple times and even applied to dental school multiple times, so definitely keep going for it ❤️
Love the video, pray for me this coming May! Subscribed
Thank you!! Will do! 🙏
I’m in junior high school and I want to take dentistry ❤️
TX Med student here... dentistry as a market is saturated. Too many dentists and not enough work to go around. Not putting anyone away from this field, but weigh your income potential vs. student debt burden carefully. Have buddies of mine who couldn't find work after dental school. One found work making in the low 100s. Just food for thought.
what a wonderful video, will be so helpful if my coming essay asked me to talk about dentists.
Glad it was helpful!
Although ur video gives me motivation, I couldn't help but notice how nice ur shoe game is!! Lol luv thiss
Thanks a lot for your help and I look forward to hearing from you ♥️
That was very inspiring thank you
What about the prefix 'Dr'? Are dentists entitled to the title doctor?
Samee samee!
I'd start getting good at biology if I were you :-)
I'm halfway through my third year of dental school right now.
Biology is really not that hard, you just need to learn a lot but the problems are easy
I have been preparing for this since my Grade 9th thnx for the information
I love your channel! I want to study odontology so badly!
I wish i began it sooner, but I’d like to get in even though I am starting at 28
I hope i chose the right decision 🙏
Hi I have a dream of being a dentist when I was 5 i’m 11 now, I wanna learn about what they do as a dentist
Wow this is a really useful video! Thank you keep it up! 👍🏼
The reaal question is... do you recommend new toothpaste or not?
Yoour answer is in the link open it and get that
Which speciality is the most requested and what one is the laid back more simple one
I feel like a lot of people want to specialize in ortho because its more laid back.. but that makes it pretty competitive to get into specialty programs.
What do you need to major in to become a dentist
The most common major is Biology 😊 but you can major in anything as long as you complete the required pre-requisites like chemistry, biology, physics etc…
Besides your reasons i notice your jordan 3s in the top corner😎
I’m about to be a senior in high school and really thought i had my mind made up about wanting to becoming a dentist. However, i’ve been watching some videos that got in depth of the downsides of being a dentist and now i’m really second guessing myself?!😩 I’m just wondering if there are any major struggles you had/have being a dentist?
Me too sis
Sofia Gonzalez girl me too. hmu and let’s talk about it
It’s hard work to get into dental school, and I know there are downsides to being a dentist (like debt), but I’m still totally confident that this is what I want to do.
Can you do a video about the steps it took you to get where you are and the steps you still need to take to get there
Although I want to be a teacher , this was a great a video ! My sister is hoping to be a dentist
I was wondering... what kind of bachelor do you need to get into Dental School? Which one do you have?
😄 Thank you for your insight and the info. I fell in love with your conclusion!! I definitely want to give back and make an impact on low-income families and be able to see the the world😄😄🙏💛
I appreciate the new perspective as I am really considering to be a dentist! ~Best of Luck
I’m senior in high school and can you give me advice which is better dentistry or pharmacy
Can you please tell me how many years it took u to read the dentist cource??
Wish me luck guys
Im going to a college of dentistry
How do you like?
@@prydegirl pretty good but expensive, went to second stage now
Don’t sweat it. If I told you you’ll be making over 1 million in a Single year would be worried?
I’m just thinking that if I do try for it I feel like it’s going to be hard and I’m going to fail
Same I want to have someone pursuing dentistry like how I’m interested in doing but all the people I know don’t want to be dentists so I’m on my own
@@leilei6183 sameee it’s pretty had for me but Rn I’m doing bio so hopefully will get to do anything w nursing and etc

hello doctor jasmine! this question is unnecessary but can i do anything to like, make my cavities gone? like, home remedies? im sorry if this question is not good :((
I have 2 Year Dental diploma and 4 Years bachelor degree in dental what is the per hours if u have this degree let me know so that if the per hours is less then i should get admission in the DMD or DDS
Can I play college sports while in dental school?
What do you think about dentists being unemployed in the future?
Great question! I feel like there are a lot of job opportunities for dentists right now, and there will continue to be because the population is growing and people will always need dental care 🤷♀️
@@jasmineahrar Actually, I think the same as you, but the recent news that chine discovered new material for dental diseases was scaring me. Thank you for replying 🫶
Im 14 yrs old and i dont know what to choose i wanna be a lawyer or a dentist? 😔 and im not good at math but i wanna be a dentist
Tough decision! Luckily, you dont have to decide any time soon :) try and learn about both from now until you graduate high school. I bet a dentist would even let you come shadow!
Thank u ✨
Where have I heard that intro at before?
So how does long it take to be a dentist?
Hi jasmine, could you tell me how digital marketing impact dental business???
I’m currently working on my bachelors in biology and thinking about becoming a dentist
Can you please tell me if I can study dentistry and then go for academics as professors??
Yes you can!! All dental schools need faculty that have gone to dental school and that are passionate about teaching.
@@jasmineahrar ok thank you so much
how many years does it take to become a dentist
Typically, 4 years of undergrad and 4 years of dental school so a total of 8 years after high school.
Do you have to do 2 science subjects in school to do dentistry in college? I only have the options of bio and physics in my school but I only chose biology. Should I change and do physics too? I just didn't want to do physics because there's a lot of maths
Dental schools require that you take both biology and physics, there are other science classes that you’ll need to take as well. Check out my other videos to see what all the requirements are. Good luck!
@@jasmineahrar thank you :)
Please answer. Can you exchange from oral health to dentistry course in university?
