This is a very, very interesting theory… He was the type who would never let something like that be known, and I could see him changing the narrative for his own benefit. That being said, I do believe he wanted to outshine his wife… She was being interviewed all over TV and had her face advertised in Times Square… He did not.
@@notthegoodgirlpiggybacking a bit because this video sent me on a bit of a deep dive this month 😅 the woman who replaced Dave at Disney joined the company a year before Dave did. Oh how 2018-2019 me thought these two had it all. I thought poorly of my husband and our marriage, thinking that he should be trying to “better”himself and our relationship. Shame on them for making so many feel inadequate while pretty much hating each other behind the scenes. Looking at the older clips now, I cringe thinking why/how I didn’t see right thru them at the time. I’ve learned that my husband and I have a great little life. Perfect? No where close. But perfect for us? ABSO-EFFING-LUTLEY. Great video!
@@jayelle5375 The underlying premises of all this self-help noise are: 1. You as you are aren’t nearly good enough. 2. Any harmful thing that happens to you is entirely your own fault. Not so “positive” when you think about it, is it?
That is exactly what 'toxic positivity' is about. "You're a loser if you don't attain THIS standard." Meanwhile, wealth in the head will always mean more than wealth in the pocket. Nothing wrong with the latter, but the former is criminally neglected - even actively discouraged - in human society nowadays.
The story of Rachel and Dave Hollis always makes me proud of myself for getting out of my marriage early. I was married to a man I met at church...I was a grad student about to finish my masters in clinical mental health counseling. In my somewhat small community, I had made a pretty good name for myself and was considered pretty successful. My ex husband was known as a good "Christian" man who was making a name for himself as well. We were a power couple in our small community. My ex tried to attach himself to everything I did. He tried to build himself up while tearing me down. He was outwardly full of toxic positivity, but behind closed doors was a negative monster that loved to destroy anything that got in his way. When Rachel tells about the 3%...I felt that in my marriage. My ex loved to tell me how stupid I was and what a failure I would be. I don’t know if Dave ever got physically or sexually abusive (something I experienced with my ex)...but you can tell mental/emotional and financial abuse were in his wheelhouse. I think Rachel also displayed her own narcissistic abusiveness, so I think that is why they stuck together so long. That toxic positivity also produces a huge vat of denial. I am glad that I lived with a healthy dose of reality and got the hell out of my marriage.
Omg! When I was a Beachbody coach they idolized her so much. They pushed her book and her philosophies on to everyone. I felt that they placed an excessive burden on individuals to “fix” their lives without acknowledging systemic challenges or privilege. I’m so glad I left Beachbody! What a total cult!
When Rachel divorced Dave, he almost immediately found another Rachel. This one’s name is Heidi, but otherwise, she’s basically the same woman. She even looks like Rachel.
Say $18 one more time Do you see what we witnessed here? This man had a job with a 500k salary but was jealous enough of his wife that he took what she built for herself.
So, you broke up with the heel because he treated you badly and had no respect for you. Then you married him. Good call, Rachel. Got any tips for how I can make my life better?
I found Dave Hollis to be profoundly unlikeable in life, but his death was still sad to me in the sense that it showed a person emotionally broken and in a prison of his own making. I can still have compassion for him even though I found him insufferable.
The sad part about narcissism is that it's really deep-seated insecurity. It's so deep, in fact, that the person completely loses touch with themself and has to invent and maintain a persona. I can't diagnose anyone, but it seems like some of that may have been happening with this guy. It's too bad his demons won.
Yeah I sense a personality disorder here. It seems he didn’t have much of a sense of self and would adopt the characteristics of the person he was with. That’s a symptom of Borderline- maybe others too.
Yes: identity is a big issue in personality disorders. Cluster B types will steal other people’s life stories (sometimes even forgetting who they pinched it from and telling that person their own anecdotes) to make themselves seem deep, or full of integrity and character. They don’t have ambitions of their own, (asides from general power, wealth, and admiration) because they aren’t creative because that would require authenticity, which is too vulnerable a position to be in, because they are ashamed of the person they really are.
I think you're right. She says in the beginning that he over achieved to EARN the affection of his parents. That teaches a kid their self worth is only based on what they do. They dont have value just for being alive. It's a sad thing to do to a child and creates a sad insecure adult.
I have a memory of Josie I will never forget.. My mom recovered that time but passed about a year later. Watching your videos remind me of her and that day. I will never forget. That point where they’re talking about how they looked pre-fame/wealth at about 17:00 is just sad as hell. These were two people who hate themselves and each other.
Yes, I found that very sad too. They looked like a normal couple. Maybe at that time they were more invested in their actual lives than just their looks. And they probably only look so much "better" because they had insane amount of money

The 3% bracelet meaning upset me so much. Everyone deserves a partner who believes in them just as much if not more than they believe in themselves. Always avoid someone like Dave in romantic relationships, because being logical is ok but you should also try to hype up your partner, not bring them down, regardless if you’re being pragmatic.
I wouldn't lose any sleep being sad about poor Rachael. She's been peddling shitty relationship advice and promoting this type of behavior to millions of people (especially young women)and getting filthy rich off of it. They're both awful people.

He went from classic people pleaser, border line ego maniac to complete F boy. They fed into each others worst qualities and became soulless manipulators with no personal compasses. It’s utterly bizarre and so sad. You covered this so well. It is obvious he was very mentally ill towards the end, the video of him during “pancake gate” was clearly mania. But, I can’t fault him as much as I would a few years ago. The “fans”, the onlookers, come on. We keep seeing this, stop tearing these people down in the comments in real time and just be quiet or recommend help. Guys like this are dropping every single day just in the form of tiktokers. People who’s entire identity becomes the online world and they lack all depth, real relationships, sense of self to realize none of it matters. It’s happening right now with JoJo Siwa. I have to say, as a 50 yr old man, who has been sober for 17 yrs (on the last day of Dec), who is still in therapy, successfully medicated & monitored, with a life I've been very fortunate to design to serve my needs best, which also helps me be a good dad & granddad, but who has an active addict for the majority of my life, who was erratic, chaotic, aggressive, even violent & could be abusive - I could not imagine the struggle I would be in if I was also trying to convince, literally anyone that none of those things were happening or needed. Even with all the tools I've learned, the coping skills, the self analysis with "rigorous honesty," as we say in sobriety, I still don't think I could pull that off for any real length of time. Its so gross the way the biggest gurus will, in a sense, allow a man like this to self destruct, right in front of them, for the tiniest boost to their own brand & ego. It should be criminal in some way.
I guess if you’re trying to market yourself as a lifestyle coach, you have to present your own life as super-duper. Not something I’d want to do. My life’s a mess, but at least I don’t have to fake anything.
Rachel is also releasing another book in 2025. In my opinion, she will use any opportunity to write a book, no matter how controversial the content is.
The thing that gets me about Rachel stepping down as the CEO of what she built to let Dave take over...isn't that the message that's the exact opposite of her girl power message!
These two WOULD make a big show of attempting to adopt a child from a different country (the ultimate "look at me and praise me for how good I am" move).
I agree with the commentor that said these two can be a primer for a horror movie that involves family vloggers/couple influencers and the cracks in it. Oh that would be a FILM
I have experienced how quickly alcoholism can destroy a human being so so quickly. I'm not a Rachel fan but I really felt it when she said its not the actual struggles you're facing, but the lying about it. That is what destroys you and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. This is a sad story.
He’s literally repulsive. What a pathetic excuse for a man; he just couldn’t accept the fact that his wife was more successful than him. His treatment of his daughter was repugnant but both of them used their children as props and I find that disgusting and unforgivable.
The pancake live is when I realized he was doing Coke. Then when Rachel said the stuff about the double life it just reinforced that. I forgot how many boat metaphors that man would use every time he spoke. As always, this video is incredibly well made. Thank you!
Thank you so much for delving into this topic. This entire situation with Dave and Rachel was such a car crash, the dude believed his own hype and drank the kool aid he denounced for so long. Ohh to be so privileged and yet so painfully oblivious to it.
I followed his whole journey through the brilliant snark of Keya’s World and Mack Attack. His death was quite the shock on You Tube. I would love more stories on self help gurus who are actually living a lie.
the audacity to ask her to step down as CEO is mindboggling to me! and the fact that she did, its even more perplexing to me. Dont get me wrong, both of them are not (were) nice people, but still its wrong on so many levels.
I wonder so much how that was approached. Did he even try to couch it in nice terms to make it seem like something tolerable... "You thrive in the creative and media stuff, let me handle the nuts and bolts of the business instead..." or if it was just a flat out "Me... Man. You... Woman. Me... Better. Me Do Job Now."
When it was going down in 2018ish, it sounded like he wouldn't leave his job for anything less than CEO and Rachel wanted him to join her company so she gave him whatever roll would make him happy. It came across like she pushed him into it and it was her idea 😅
Titles do not matter that much they're made all up. He probably did not want to leave Disney; she likely wanted him to help grow the company since it was growing. Remember they keep saying he likes certainty and she likes growth.
32:09 - I have some advice as a woman working in law, which is a male-dominated field, as a legal editor, at work, I choose to only speak when I have something of value to say or to uplift/praise other's amazing work. I've found when withhold my tongue until important, people put value into my words and my voice will instantly be heard when I do speak. -- It is hard for me, I have ADHD and want to rant by nature. -- And when not giving sound suggestions or asking key questions, I'm uplifting other which encourages my team to feel confident and appreciated in working with me, and that trust also improves my words. What Dave was doing was trying to show off, which is counterproductive in the corporate world. Corporate likes results and innovative ideas that save or make money. They do not like ego.

@lassoroot Yes, this was painful to watch. At that age, a child understands the themselves and their place within the world by what is or is not happening to them, or for them. What the father did sent a message to the child that her needs don't matter. And by extension, she doesn't matter.
I’ll never understand how people will charge you thousands of dollars to go to their marriage health seminar and then get divorced You were literally charging people thousands of dollars to get answers from you that you didn’t have to begin with
The irony in all of this is that he was already extremely successful in his original career. It's crazy to see a man go from headlining some of the highest grossing films of all time to spending over an hour ranting about how no one's buying his $18 book. It really demonstrates just how self-defeating the "Self-Help" philosophy can be when pushed too far. This zealous fixation on a positive attitude and improvement for its own sake instead of finding satisfaction in the good or great things he already had going for him...You have to wonder how much easier it would've actually been to improve and address his problems if he hadn't shined a spotlight on himself and his marriage.

@@francesmcstay Hah, the commenters here likely lean toward familiarity with the Hollisverse because, if I recall correctly, Not the Good Girl’s video on Rachel Hollis’s unraveling a few years ago was her first video to really blow up, so a lot of people discovered this channel through that. Never was a fan of Rachel and Dave Hollis, but it is incredibly sad to watch this. As someone who knows a loved one who struggles with alcoholism, it is devastating how quickly it can go from bad to worse. It makes me sad that a lot of influencer couples share so much online....I don't think it helps anyone to build your brand off of over sharing your personal lives.
I agree, some things should remain private. I really dislike family vloggers as well who exploit their children on social media. Influencer lives are 95% fake. I'm not sure why so many people watch their fake content.
I decided to peruse his Instagram while watching the second half of this. I was struck by how often he seemed to be looking backwards. For example, posts about “three years ago today, I left Disney” “three years ago today, we moved to Texas,” “three years ago today, -insert something nostalgic here-“. I don’t think Dave was ever happy after leaving Disney, and that decision might have been his undoing. I don’t like Dave or Rachel very much, but this documentary explains why Rachel decided to just end things in the manner she did, which I don’t blame her for. She just has no business selling marriage retreats while going through that.

@@censusgary sooo toxic!!
No one can make you feel inadequate without your permission.
Not them but another coach couple I idolized made me feel the same way and I later realised they were miserable and felt foolish for being realistic 😊
So glad Beachbody (Bodi) shut down. Horrible CEO.

I read its hard to know how common narcissm is because they rarely seek diagnosis. They don't think anything is wrong with THEM.
Yeah I sense a personality disorder here. It seems he didn’t have much of a sense of self and would adopt the characteristics of the person he was with. That’s a symptom of Borderline- maybe others too.
He walks like a duck, he quacks like a duck, he poops on the lawn like a duck. I'm comfortable with talking about him as if he is a duck.

God these two people are so irritating
They are sooo cringe and out of touch in their videos 😬😬😬
Repulsive …
I was way too invested in the Hollis debacle. I’ll never forget how utterly shocked I was when he passed. Oddly enough, I still think of him more than I should. I am sure you’ll breach this subject with care and grace always.
I can't understand how so many commenters have heard of this guy and his wife. I'm online daily and have never heard of them. Were they an Instagram thing?
@@francesmcstay Hah, the commenters here likely lean toward familiarity with the Hollisverse because, if I recall correctly, Not the Good Girl’s video on Rachel Hollis’s unraveling a few years ago was her first video to really blow up, so a lot of people discovered this channel through that. Unless you were part of the anti-MLM or toxic self-help critique community, you may not have come across them! And yes, I believe she initially blew up on Instagram, but it was their podcasts and her books that really cemented their place in that niche community. If you haven’t seen her first video on Rachel, it’s a good one!
Oh dang! A NTGG vid! Whatever else I was about to watch can wait... this is how I'll be spending the evening! Always awesome when you upload!!
Thank you for the support!💛
Remember "Berger" - the writer/boyfriend Carrie Bradshaw had in SATC...? This is a real life Berger...
OMG Yes!
He dumped her on a post it 😅
I didn't know these people but this was fascinating. You somehow captured the sense of immense exhaustion of a life that's entirely monetized- so much so that it gave me slight anxiety watching it
I remember when he passed away. It was definitely a shock!
Uploading right before my lunch break??
Christmas came early💜
😁💗
This is so unexpected, I'm SO excited to see that you covered it!!
He's not the first, second, third or even fourth, husband of an influencer I've watched sadly end their lives.......
Dave’s problem is that he was trying to steal Rachel’s audience but failed to realize her audience was majority women. Most women aren’t going to take self help advice from a man. He was never going to get success from that. Jealousy is a hell of a drug.
