The interview by Tammy where she speaks to the gay pastor going through treatment for AIDS is incredibly beautiful and heart-opening. I don’t agree with most of what these people do. But her decision to put a spotlight on people with AIDS & to beseech her community to care for them, hug them, support them? I have to give credit where it’s due. Thank you for sharing this!

Tammy was kind, open, and non-judgmental towards the gay and HIV-positive/AIDS communities. This was practically unheard of among conservative Christians in the 80s.
This is the best documentary I've ever seen on the Bakkers. You put in so much rare footage. I cannot imagine the hours you put into making it. It is really well done. Thank you. I personally think they were sincere in wanting to serve God and people when they were young. The wealth though became too much. Jim got out of prison & went right back to doing it all over again. People are silly to trust him now.
I remember being a HUNGRY kid with 4 siblings and my mom watching these people and sending money for "blessings " the Bakers promised as her kids remained hungry.
I give Jessica Hahn a ton of credit for being brave enough to go on Donahue and Geraldo and speak out against powerful men like they were, and even answer questions from the audience… took a lot of courage!! 👏
I’m so disgusted at how the church treated her. And on the show.. the men and women standing up asking questions that are essentially blaming her for her own r*pe. I don’t even have words for people that think this way. (Also BRAVO to the woman that said she’d be sick upon seeing Jim Baker, too)
Same, I'm not religious but every single time I see something like that I cry. I think it's because I've only ever experienced vitriol from my own religious family members (they're Jehovah's Witnesses,) so seeing a religious leader especially back then being kind towards LGBT people hits me right in the feels.

Yeah, being a Christian is nothing to be proud of. You call this video classy. What a joke. It's about lies, money, and r*pe. I watched Jim and Tammy on TV in the 80s and once ran into her at the grocery store in Palm Springs. You Christians are BAD PEOPLE. Tammy’s display of empathy, bravery, love, and compassion throughout her interview with gay pastor/AIDS patient Steve Pieters is a perfect example of how true Christians should always act towards marginalized communities. ❤
Absolutely! I also believe the ground breaking interview was the catalyst to bring down the ministry. There were forces (Jerry Falwell, political/church leaders, etc.) as there so often is when people reach a level of notoriety as Jim and Tammy Faye did, waiting to burn the whole thing down. Had Tammy not done the interview Jim's embezzlment would most certainly have continued on much longer. He definitely was not the only one with his hands in the till. He was just the fall guy.
I know! I grew up in the 80s and I hated Tammy Faye and Jim Baker, but seeing that clip of her showing compassion to an aids victim really shocked me and made me see her in a different light. It brought tears to my eyes -I had many gay friends in the 80s and had forgotten how taboo is was back then. It was heartwarming. ❤

As a seminary student I ministered to the widow of an Assemblies of God church planter. She was a very depressed, financially struggling fan of Jim and Tammy Baker, and had visited Heritage Village. She very much enjoyed her time there but it did not resolve what troubled her. To make a long story short, I came to suspect she had suffered sexual abuse as a child. I asked, she broke down in tears saying her father had molested her. She expressed anger and hatred of her father, said she ran away from home to marry the older minister to escape her situation. I believe the hidden and unresolved anger, shame, depression and feelings of guilt contributed to a suicide and prison for two of their three children. The good news for her was working through all that stuff and then taking it together to God in prayer seems to have released her from some of the pain; some weeks later a daughter I had never met came to see me, saying "Thank you for helping my mother. I have never seen her in such a good condition as she is now." My guess is the mother told the daughter about what had happened in her life. What if anything does this have to do with the Bakers? My suspicion is they provided at least a momentary escape from shame, guilt and/or spiritual boredom for a multitude of people whose inner needs were not met by "that old time religion" that so often punishes rather than comforts. The sad thing is the Bakers used Jesus as a covering for crass materialism (Prosperity Gospel) and at least in Jim's case, predatory sexual behavior. Although they acquired great wealth, they were "blind, poor and naked" when it comes to appreciating some of Jesus' teachings and example.

I lived and worked in Rochester, Minnesota at the same time Jim Bakker was incarcerated at the Federal Medical Center there. The office I worked at was on a large campus that shared a common, grassy yard with the Federal Medical Center. One morning, a co-worker yelled for all of us to run to the curved glass window at the opposite side of our round building. Here was Jim Bakker, barefoot and in pajamas, running through the grass, followed closely by two out-of-shape prison guards. One eventually caught up with him, and they fell in the wet morning grass. They walked back towards the prison building, Jim’s jammies covered in grass stains. It’s an image I’ll never forget.
The way they treated Jessica, all those interviews with people questioning her was disgusting. I feel for her and am glad Tammy apologized and befriended her. May she find peace

Then, I found out the high price of it and when I complained about that to Mom and Dad, they said that was because part of the cost was also meant to be a donation. Wow. Excellent documentary. It's so sad how they destroyed Jessica Hahn's life. The victim blaming and shaming was hard to listen to. Imagine being assaulted two separate times in the same night by two men you looked up to and trusted. She ended up feeling worthless. And all of her "poor decisions" after that were just a reflection of her shattered self esteem. I'm glad she finally healed, but it's sad she never got a chance to have the family she dreamed of.
Her life wasn't destroyed tho. She made a name and money for herself. And people aren't victim blaming her, they just don't know how credible she is or not. They just question whether she was really r*ped or had a consensual s3xual affair

There’s a lot of fairness offered from this channel and I appreciate it too. The interview with the gay pastor brought me to tears. I’m not Christian and I hate televangelism but that was really really touching. This is how TV should be used, not for hate.
That’s because it’s not Gods word and a politically correct pastor and church. I’m against televangelist because they’re in it for the money. Yes they’re other preachers that are as well but not all. These politically correct churches such as Joel Olstean don’t preach the true word of God. More or less tell you long as you go to church and pay your ties you’re good. Real Christianity isn’t popular because it commands us to give up sin for God. That’s not the popular opinion of the politically correct crowd. Yes Christians like myself sin everyday. We repent to the almighty daily begging for forgiveness. All I can say is one glorious day for some and sad day for others will see it when Christ returns.
The confusion among the TRUE Christian word is this. Yes we love everyone no matter the case. But that doesn’t mean we ACCEPT their lifestyles and/or decisions. God does love everyone however his love for ppl alone will NOT allow folks to go to heaven. You’re not born homosexual. PERIOD. it’s a sin as the Bible states. No it’s not any greater than any sin. God does say hate the sin not the sinner. The cold hard truth is that there’s gates around heaven for a reason. To keep the non believers out. God doesnt send ppl to hell, we send ourselves with our lack of faith, sacrifice, and love for the Almighty.

I'll admit that it's one of the most decent things Tammy Faye has done especially considering how prevalent the AIDS scare was back then.

Tammy was kind, open, and non-judgmental towards the gay and HIV-positive/AIDS communities. This was practically unheard of among conservative Christians in the 80s.

[2] And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. [3] And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. [4] For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; [5] and spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; [6] and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;

Her life wasn't destroyed tho. She made a name and money for herself. And people aren't victim blaming her, they just don't know how credible she is or not. They just question whether she was really r*ped or had a consensual s3xual affair
She went to to pose naked for playboy after this scandal….
God knows what happened to her. Watch the Playoy model end up in heaven and the greedy men of faith end up...elsewhere
I’ve followed what Jay Bakker has been up to for years and he’s always seemed like a solid dude. I contribute 100% of that to his mother.
Your channel is one of the few that I’ll stop whatever video I’m on to see what you put out:) love your stuff!!
@domsmom725 Thank you so much for the support! 💛
@domsmom725, That is exactly what I was doing when Josie's notification popped up 😄
I was so excited to see a new one!!! Best weekend surprise in a while for me!
God that interview with Steve just broke me. Tammy maybe a lot of things, but she gave this man a voice in the exact community that did not initially want to hear him. That's invaluable. And her tearful response to his interview means a lot too.
I remember Ted Turner's interview, saying their partnership was his most profitable venture in his life up to that time. He explained that the donations would be mailed to a p.o. box, where they would meet to collect the loot, slitting it all down the middle. It was inspirational.
Lol
“Mmmm that’s *coughs* good *chokes* wow” that was so funny 😂😂😂😂
It's hard to disguise a compulsion to retch!
I'm sure Tammy had a role to play in the hustle, but its hard to be mad at her. She really did come off as genuine and bringing a gay reverend on her show was so meaningful and brave. I respect her for that. Jim can totally rot in hell though.
I wonder how much she knew about the finances. I mean she should have had an idea that they were taking up too much of the money with the houses, etc. Tammy being so supportive of the LGBTQ+ community was awesome to see.
@@sasamafrasswasn’t this during the time that she couldn’t even have her own account yet? I bet she probably just figured there’s money in the account and didn’t ask where it came from. Most women back then didn’t ever ask, just assumed it came from work and that was that
@@kaleanaking5292 that is a fair point but even if she didn't know exactly how much they had there had to be context clues that they were living a lavish lifestyle. Maybe she was blinded by the prosperity of the prosperity gospel 🤷
@@sasamafrass that’s very possible. I knew a pastor and wife like that. It’s why I stopped going to that church. She never questioned anything he said and if I remember right, he got in trouble for embezzling and she legit knew nothing
@@kaleanaking5292 yeah unfortunately that seems to happen frequently
Wow God was faithful to Steve Pieters... To make it at a time when there was no Healthcare for HIV/AIDS is a miracle... He was a walking miracle... May he rest in peace 🙏🏾♥️🙏🏾
I thought this entire time that you were covering these pastors in a different and kind way. I couldn’t tell why exactly I was picking up that tone. But as soon as I saw Tammy crying about the man who couldn’t even be hugged by his own family made me understand. I’m telling you not all Christians function in hate. That was so heart warming. So sweet.
There’s a lot of fairness offered from this channel and I appreciate it too. It is easy to get caught up in thinking that all Christians are hateful- but the ones that are the loudest get the most attention and are often the most obnoxious. The kinder, more gentle voices get lost amongst the screaming hate. Josie does a good job of letting all sides have their turn and imo presents them fairly.
My God, Tammy’s talk with Steve brought tears to my eyes. What a wonderful, kind hearted lady 😢
They used God to make money.
Tammy is fake.
Going through my late mother's storage I found 2 of those 5 gallon buckets. She being a poor native on an Indian reservation. She passed away at age 90
There's no end to the despicable ways, despicable people will find, to line their pockets at the expense of the vulnerable. It makes my blood boil.
Oh my. You are a masterful storyteller, and I always learn something new. I can't even tell you how important your voice is, in this moment especially. I am a former fundamentalist, and current Episcopal priest, I am so grateful. What you do matters so much! Blessings to you and yours.
Thank you for the kind words and support! Means a lot. 💛
The way Jessica was grilled by that studio audience made my jaw drop. Wtf.
This was, by far, the best documentary about them.
Back in the ‘80s my friends and I called the PTL club the “Pass the Loot” club.
My mom used to call it "Pay the Lady" haha.
Lol
When I was 16 my boyfriend's dad used to wear a jacket with a PTL patch sewn to it. The family was from Philadelphia. His dad was originally Catholic but became a born again Christian and was quite a Bible thumper. He would preach to anyone who would listen. Understandably, this used to embarrass my boyfriend at the time. When his friends would ask him what "PTL" meant, he would say, "Philadelphia Tennis League"
I can't say why but I REALLY love Tammy. You can feel how sweet and genuine she is. I wasn't born yet but I can understand how charming she was on tv to millions
You could have warned me about that "Women's Secret Confessions" ad.
That's one of the most unintentionally hilarious things I've seen in a while 😂
*CALL NOW.*
The voiceover 😂
Like my mouth dropped when it played.
Ngl, I'd listen/watch that 😅
Awe the 80s! Everything was over dramatic. 😆
I was went from my heart breaking for Jessica, to crying tears of joy that Rev. Stephens lived long and well, to laughing out of shock that Jim is selling doomsday food buckets. I am in so much shock.
This was a well packed documentary that kept me glued - thank you for a job well done
You're shedding tears for Jessica, meanwhile she's laughing all the way to the bank. Her act fooled you. The woman is a scam artist. Not a victim.
@@maryskinner3439That's really funny when she herself said that she returned the money. You know, if she was really a scam artist, I think she would want to keep the money she got from the guy instead of returning it and getting a job. So, like, explain that, then? Thanks.
@@Shingo-ok1lz She didn't return a dime of any of the money she scammed from people. Is Jim Bakker a garbage human? Absolutely. But Jessica was an opportunist. I personally think they deserved each other.
One of the Greatest industry in America, "Prosperity Gospel"
Talk about creating a god in your own image.
I'm glad Tammy and Jessica reconciled in the end. Thank you for this video, it was fascinating.
Honestly Tammy was such an icon and in my opinion a great example of how a true follower of Christ should act and think. Kind and respectful. Not overly aggressive or rude about her views.
Oh, yes. She publicly called a young girl (better looking than SHE was) "ugly" after she had been raped by her husband.
You mean like take all of the additional money that was raised for yourself?
FFS
Jim Bakker became a friend to my dad, who is a pastor, after getting out of prison. I believe Jim used my family to help rehabilitate himself and never truly was sorry for anything. I’m not sure he’s capable of it. Of course, I was just a teenager than and have only come to realize that later in life.
Just look at what he does now - the exact same thing as before prison, just not as successfully.
Wow I thought he died
Yep. Only did 5 years and he's STILL grifting. Justice?😂
I’m a Christian, and I’m a clergyman, but I have a great appreciation for these documentaries. I’m going to support this channel.
Jim figured out every way that he could cry,and scam people out of money. They lived the best life as long as they could. Betrayal in every way
Narcissists
And he's still alive. Maybe that's, somehow, God's punishment.
didn't think id go into this video emotional. tammy was too good for all of this, and im glad jay is following in her footsteps.
Tammy Faye has me tearing up..😢
She had a love affair with a black woman runNing skynet who pretended to be an alien while killing americans.
"I see the avarice that brought them down," said Jerry Falwell. Years later, the same could be said about his son, his successor.
Same could be said about Jerry Sr.
Tammy and Steve's talk was so progressive and I applaud both of them. It really was extremely touching, passionate and full of love, it was heartfelt like you'd never see today.
And, here we see an example of people's gullibility, still. Unbelievable.
I’m really glad that interview happened. My husband and I are Christian and our firstborn son came out 5 years ago, at 15. And I think that there were long range effects from the act of love Tammy showed. We have many more churches that open their arms up to the gay community. And I’d like to think Tammy started that legacy.
It's a spirit. Spirits are transferred from one to another 😢
GOD doesn't go against HIS Word.
It's a very strong spirit and it needs to be cast out. Very sad but, I know a lot of homosexuals that got the victory in JESUS❤
@@jacquelinebourque8041 there’s lots of things that happened in the Scripture that doesn’t happen today. Jesus Christ loves my son. And my son was born gay. We have 3 straight sons. They were all raised in a loving Christian home with a married mom and dad. What if it’s a test? ✝️
@@GenXfrom75no your son was not born gay. That is a lifestyle choice and you can give them the gospel of Jesus Christ so he can be saved. That is the most loving thing to do. Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11. Don't be discouraged because Christ can save anyone who calls on him in faith and repents. He saved me from fornication and a whole host of sins! I'm not perfect but his Holy Spirit is refining me through the Bible and under sound preaching of the Bible. The Lord doesn't want your son or any of your family in sin least of all to encourage it. 'For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved' Romans 10:13.
@@GenXfrom75your son was not born to be gay. It is a demon. It comes through generational curses. You can start to break that curse without telling your son. Fast and pray. That will bring him to the place where he will call out to Jesus for deliverance. My family has homosexual demons also.
@@GenXfrom75 Leviticus 20:13. God bless.
In today's vocabulary, we'd say Jessica was trafficked. I had no idea until this deep dive. Thank you!
It is indeed no different, you're right.
I remember it always being called an affair,. I had no idea she was that young and that it happened that way.
The Man Act law I think 🤔
I remember seeing Tammy Faye on a reality show with Vanilla Ice and Ron Jeremy years ago and they stood up for her and were friends with her till her passing.
As someone who attended Lakewood with my parents for 5+ years the donations all the way to the partnership and donation room is JUST like Joel Osteens. I also was on their prayer dance team one year for Christmas. I wish there was more to expose on them I would LOVE for u to do a video on them. Even the ties they have ie scam Joyce Myer are insane!
These people are transgender
They're all evil grifters
What nonsense... it wouldn't matter what these people did, you wouldn't be satisfied. God doesn't need your help to bring justice into the world. Let God be God and you be... kyaurl.
My grandmother fell for their brainwashing and sent them money all the time that she couldn't afford. She did without for them
😂😂😂😂😂
My grandmama as well, and she was poor. 😞
My grandmother did as well. But she didn’t do without. She sent a lot to these mega churches.
Sounds like a personal problem
The way the audience spoke to and questioned Jessica is the reason victims don’t speak out nor accept they’ve been abused.
This one will take me back to my childhood. My mom was a huge fan and bought into their dream.... like so many others. The scandal was huge and I remember it well
Your content FARRRRRR surpasses anything else on UA-cam!!!!
I (impatiently) wait between posts because I always know the next video will be worth the wait!! Love you girl 🫶🏼
Thank you so much for the support (and your patience)! 💛
I feel like Tammy Faye was a victim of her own circumstance, and that she was a genuine, loving soul. RIP Tamara!
As a gay queer man raised christian by my parents, It always makes me happy to learn about religious icons who didn't walk the dark path all too common now
I myself am aethiest which gets me some eyebrows and the occasional preachy speech from my more extended roman-catholic family, but when I came out to them they all accepted me wholeheartedly which makes me feel so loved, and seems to have brought the courage to my siblings and a few extended cousins to come out as well
I have only one family member I'm aware of who more openly "disagrees" with my "lifestyle" (somehow shes more accepting of me being trans than being gay) but I only know this from what my mom and little brother have told me, otherwise shes polite to my face and makes an effort to call me "he" which I very much appreciate
Jesus died to set captives free!!!!
@@yuuriahl I love you enough to give you THE TRUTH: Please read Leviticus 20:13. God bless you.
@@repentjesusiscomingsoon1529 thankyou, very insightful, might I direct you to read a bit before at Leviticus 19:17-18?

What a great video! I had a Pentecostal neighbor growing up, my sister and I were friends with her kids and the only thing allowed on their tv was this nonsense. Their mom would randomly get filled with the spirit and start speaking in tongues and it was honestly really disturbing. I went to church with them once and told my mom I’d never go again it really freaked me out lol. I never understood how anyone could watch this programming and not see it for what it was.
I speak in tongues, but I don’t lie to and cheat people.
@RaptureReadyforJesus-qv2ql Thank you. I love how they blame all this on praying in the Spirit.
@@sandythomas8911 speaking in tongues is a beautiful gift 🎁
What a seriously awesome, frank, honest, and imho un-prejudicial trip down the Jim and Tammy rabbit hole.
I’ve always had a soft spot for tammy, even considering her spending habits and what she would go on to preach because of her husband. seeing her interview with pieters, it’s really no wonder the queer community embraced her after she was shunned by the broader evangelical community. the understanding and kindness she displays in that interview is a true demonstration of actual christian values, unlike whatever the fuck jim was always on about
If you ever need an example of how crazy these types of people's followers were, here's one. My great grandparents were obsessed with televangilists. And if my father and uncle were staying with them, which was often, they would make them sit in front of the TV set and put their hands on the screen to "absorb the power of Christ".
😵💫😡
Wow ❤😢👏🏻I was a kid when I saw Tammy Faye. I had no idea she was so loving towards the gay community. This must have been so controversial back then.
