If it could be useful to anyone, a couple of my impressions after a month of heavy use - mine is the 4700U model, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD. It was bought to test and potentially replace Razer Blade 2018 with i7-8750H (GTX1070 disabled), as a work machine (software development, with too many things open / running at the same time). I am amazed at how good this laptop runs: - it outperforms 8750H easily (9750H as well, according to Phoronix) - that's a 45W TDP CPU - it stays quiet 99% of the time vs Blade whose fans are constantly on under load - it's completely cool vs Blade which is uncomfortably hot to touch - battery is lasting me ~6h of heavy use, which is 3x more than on the Blade - it's 30% lighter, and thinner - it cost me 999 euro, vs 2500 for the Blade (ok, Blade has GTX, and an excellent 144Hz screen, but still) - build quality is very solid - not exactly as good as Blade, but very good and nothing to complain about - I don't have any issues with camera, touchpad, or bottom feet - screen is great indoors, but not really comfortable (not bright enough and reflective) if you're working outdoors regularly - speakers are pretty good (easily better than Blade) - touchpad is small and crappy - second USB-C is smoothly running 2 external QHD monitors (with a separate USB-C -> 2x DP adapter) I'm very happy with it, totally surprised at how good it is compared to a "high-end" machine I had from a totally different price range and how well it handles all my needs - at this form-factor and price. Excellent machine, highly recommendable!
I received today my unit. Have to say very good build quality (I was using ThinkPad t430 which is a tank). Light, feel good in the hand. Colours are beautiful, brightness is a bit low. Speakers are very very nice, as so such a small device sound is really good. Only problem I have with it is ghosting, my t430 TN panel which is terrible looks better in this situation. Impossible to read a text even scrolling page with a little bit faster than slow speed. There is always something they need to Fu*k up. I don't looking for 500nit QHD panel with 144hz. But 350-400nits, Full HD, 100sRGB 60hz and no ghosting isn't that much. I had ThinkPad t450s which had better screen. No ghosting, brightness also the same, only a bit less colorful have to say it was better looking in 6 old 250euro device. I will try this one on the weekend and will think if I can live with it. Still needs to try out Linux as I prefer to use it for everyday.

Hi, what is the product number of your machine? The way it is showed in this video is not reflecting on the exact machine, but rather model in general. Based on your PN you can precheck which panel is being used. You can additionally check panel information in Windows and cross check with the Lenovo parts list to see if they're true to the specs
@ I returned the Slim 7 as I just could not stand this ghosting. It was unacceptable. Even my old t430 with TN panel did not had anything near this. Also there was a cracking sound under keyboard while charging and I think it is a problem with electric things because the sound is this kind. Also Hinges were not straight, with open and closed lid. Ohh and I forgot to mention terrible backlit bleeding. I do not know how much lenovo paid for review but I just cannot understand how could everyone that made videos about it did not mentioned this horrible screen. I had TOP spec Slim 7, but this screen sweet God. My old Samsung r580 which is around 10 years old have a lot better screen, and it was medium grade laptop. Shame on Lenovo.

Now, only if this machine had a full size SD card reader (& a fast one at that) & better cooling (like that Envy). I wonder why they couldn't cool it properly despite having a slightly larger chassis (14" vs Envy's 13") & 2 fans vs Envy's 1 ??? Otherwise a really good machine to showcase AMD Ryzen chip's perf/watt, that battery life is insane tbh
This is silly, Lenovo stuffed two fans in there, but the heatsink is microscopic. Why not just one fan with a much better heatsink and 2 heatpipes? Or even 4 (2 on the intake radiator and 2 exhaust, I've seen this done a lot and it works well)? A fan takes up a lot of space.

I'd disable smt on it. Better performance in many applications from the lower heat and power usage.
@@TheInchii If your version of the laptop comes with the Ryzen 4700U CPU it will already be disabled since that chip has 8 cores and 8 threads. However if your unit has a Ryzen 4800U CPU the threads will 16 instead of 8 because of SMT. I'd say test your unit(performance, heat and noise levels) and disable it only if you feel the need to. All of this of course only if your unit has the 4800U. Do some research and compare the two chips to understand if it is worth it but when you get the laptop test it normally and see how it goes
How does this laptop perform when it's on battery alone? I feel like battery performances should be taken into consideration since after all its a laptop, at least let's know how much performance we might lose (if at all) beforehand, if we decide to use on battery.
Is it easy to open up for upgrading and repairs? Always the most important thing for me. I miss the days when we had easy access panels on laptops for ram and drives. sure it can't be that hard to do.

Hey Jarrod, when seeing all of these new tech improvements like from Nvidia and the new Ryzen processors, I have been wondering if I should wait to but a new gaming laptop or just buy it now.
Actually the Rizen model doesn't support Display port, as is shown next to the port by the missing bolt. Only the Intel ones feature this functionality.
Interesting approach from lenovo... Allow more power with very high temp limit in extreme mode (same applies to legion 5 afaik, which got pretty high result while hot in CB20..)

Hey Jarrod! Could you do a review of the Asus PN50, preferably the R7 SKU?? It feels like an awesome better deal paired with a decent monitor & should be able to maintain lower temps.
@@BoogieSpiderman no such thing. The PB one is the older model with 2nd gen. Ryzen mobile APUs (3xxx), while the PN50 has the 3rd gen 4xxx mobile APUs. Yeah availability is an issue since Ryzen mobile is already pretty scarce in laptops & they did only launch it in UK afaik, but still they have a product page on the US & my country's (India) websites. And I feel it's really well priced. The only problem is the lack of a proper dGPU like Hades & Ghost Canyon(which is severely overpriced)
Is the lack of discrete gpu also impact the editing experience? Not the rendering part, i wonder if it's laggy if i edit in 4k with moderate complexity
Unfortunately the noise test is plagued with strong hum (likely AC-related at your recorder). Indeed the idle and stress tests score pretty much the same with intelligent cooling, which is clearly not possible.

loved the review, one little ask though.. when reviewing business laptops like this can you make performance benchmark for developers like docker or VM's, as you know those kind of laptops are provided to developers because they don't have GPU's for obvious reasons.
I really wanted to buy this laptop, but the 16GB RAM model simply does not exist in the UK. 16GB of memory should be the minimum for any PC in 2020 to ship with considering web browsing alone will use almost all 8GB.
A question I have, Lenovo vantage can keep the battery at 60% even with the charger plugged in. I have been using this option because I read it is better for lithium batteries to stay between 30-60% battery rather then being 100% charged and completely discharged. So the question is, since Lenovo vantage keeps the battery at 60% even with the charger connected, should I keep it plugged it so it will run on the AC rather than the battery? Is that better for the battery life? I have noticed the laptop warms up a little bit more when I do this, but it doesn't get hot at all, not even close. Anyone who can give me some insight on this or lithium batteries will be well appreciated! :)
Would you recommend this for a developer? I'm looking for a thin and light portable ultrabook. Some light gaming (or cloud gaming) and watching movies. I was first looking at the 7pro with a better screen, but that won't ever be released..

With how power hungry RTX3000 series is, don't expect a major upgrade from a 90-115W 2070. You might fare much better with RDNA2, since that'll most likely have significantly higher perf/watt.
@Setzer K nah 3070 and 3080 will prolly be there too, just heavily underclocked. Remember Maxwell? And laptop GPUs are heavily binned, so just because the desktop 3080 uses 320W doesn't the laptop variant at the same clocks will also use 320W. I suspect nvidia will try to manufacture their laptops variants on tsmc's 7nm instead, or they will absolutely lose the edge in gaming laptops. Imagine a 3080Max-Q being almost half the speed of a 6900M - the horror, the horror.
@Setzer K No, what I meant was that Maxwell's M variants were always quite a bit slower than the desktop variants - the 3000 series will be the same or maybe even worse. Pascal was legendary because the desktop and laptop variants were really close, making it the best laptop GPU generation of all time. RDNA2 might be AMD's Pascal moment. Even if Nvidia manages to put 7nm GPUs in laptops, they might still not quite beat AMD in perf/watt, or if they absolutely want to they're going to have to wait a long while. Then there's cost - there is no doubt in my mind AMD will be cheaper.
@Setzer K I get your mindset. I'm from Bangladesh, so my situation is quite similar to yours. AMD is about to bring the heat in both perf and price; Zen 3 and RDNA2 might become the recipie for the ultimate gaming laptop. Let's hope AMD doesn't bloat the price becasue they will have the higher ground.

Yup, I bought it and I'm overall very happy with it.
One of the things I don't like though is that I need to use linux on it, but then the screen brightness is constantly at max, I can't change it.
Would love if you included some linux support testing on non-gaming laptops in the future!
I feel that you have germen prononciation for some reason but I see that you are in Austrlia.
Are you from Germany or so?
PS. Great review! I'd like to have this one on my desk :))) Currently I'm using Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14 with 4700U and 16G of RAM (81YM002HRK). Looks like it is in the same case as this one in your review.
Mostly I'm satisfied with 14AER05. I have only two complains:
- relatively poor color rendition (only 45% of sRGB)
- poor web-camera quality.
I'd prefer to pay more to upgrade this.
Nice video 👍
Thanks!
Hey jarrod not sure if i missed it but does it have fingerprint or face unlock.
Hey jarrod what is your opinion on new msi alpha 15 with Ryzen 7 4800H and Radeon rx 5600M
Could u review the asus vivoBook gaming F571GT
i think is a good choice but the battery is so bad?
and between this one ant the acer aspire 7 which one do u recommend?
nice vid waiting the acer nitro 5 review ;)
Dang.. It's expensive in Straya. Here in indo, it costs around AUD1600 for the top spec (AMD R7 4800u, 16GB, 1TB SSD), and 1900ish for the intel version (fabric lid+touch screen). Been 2 months with this laptop.
I'd disable smt on it. Better performance in many applications from the lower heat and power usage.
Could you say more. What's SMB and how to disable it? Tomorrow comes mine unit so would like to try this out. Thank you
@@TheInchii If your version of the laptop comes with the Ryzen 4700U CPU it will already be disabled since that chip has 8 cores and 8 threads.
Great video! I wonder why the US has no 4800U laptops at all for purchase..
Hi Jarrod!
What would you recommend for a laptop between 2-3k? Performance and battery life (when not gaming) matter a lot to me!
If you are willing to help, you could send me a link that gives you a kickback! Happy to help help you out too!
Will this go with adobe Ae, Ps, Id?
Is this good for graphic designer in this budget?
Interesting approach from lenovo... Allow more power with very high temp limit in extreme mode (same applies to legion 5 afaik, which got pretty high result while hot in CB20..)
Why is he so underrated
Because he does only of laptops
Have to extend like graphics, monitor, CPU, motherboard reviews
Thank you great review!!
If I wouldn't be so much into business machines (aka Thinkpads), I would actually consider this device. Looks legit!
slighter yeah 257 bits brightness looks fantastic. Way better than my 2013 iMac with 330 nits...
Hp omen 15 ryzen 4800H or lenovo legion 5Pi 10th gen i7 both with rtx 2060....
Which one best?
Lots of love from India
What to Buy..??
Ur recommendation..?
Helios 300 2020- RTX2060, i7
OMEN 15, Ryzen7, 4800 h,
MSI GL 65 RTX 2060
Asus TUF A15,
(Now, i am considering Helios 300)
I am going to use blender, Autodesk Alias, and other Automotive Design Softwares
Also,
Can you make Video on "Helios 300 - RTX 2060 Version)..?
Can’t wait to see Lenovo Flex 5
Great review as always. Sadly still not available in Germany. Only the Intel version.
We can expect Abode and other will optimize for ryzen in near future ☺️
Not suprised if Intel got something to do with it being less performant on AMD chips.
Hey Jarrod!
Could you do a review of the Asus PN50, preferably the R7 SKU??
It feels like an awesome better deal paired with a decent monitor & should be able to maintain lower temps.
Is pn50 uk version and PB is north America version? I cant find pn50 online aside from amazon uk.
The only problem is the lack of a proper dGPU like Hades & Ghost Canyon(which is severely overpriced)
great work keep it coming.....
Will you be reviewing the slim 7i with Intel 11t Gen too?
Can you do comparisons between Slim 7 and C940?
man i need a laptop but with the nvidia 3000 series announcement i better wait for a little bit.WE NEED MORE RYZEN LAPTOPS.
Is the lack of discrete gpu also impact the editing experience? Not the rendering part, i wonder if it's laggy if i edit in 4k with moderate complexity
Wow a 16gb exists. The one time I managed to see it in stock on Lenovos website, it was only in 8gb flavor.
Can you review the Huawei matebook 14 4600h and compare it to the 4800u apu, I really want the difference between that 2 4000 series APU
Wow, Australian Yoga Slim 7 is very expensive. Here in Indonesia we got around 1600AUD for the same specs.
Do you think people should get this or wait for intel new 11th gen with xe graphics? Rumor said it was better thank mx350.
@xikarra yeah it depends if you need a laptop rn or later on
Unfortunately the noise test is plagued with strong hum (likely AC-related at your recorder). Indeed the idle and stress tests score pretty much the same with intelligent cooling, which is clearly not possible.
I got the 4500 u version for 640$ I really love this laptop
This with a 120hz screen is my dream laptop
Great review as always 👍
Thanks!
I am thinking of buying this laptop. I wanted to buy a small usb charger with 45w for in my backpack. Do you think the charger would work, even though it normally charges with 65w
We finally see the mythical 4800u
which is better, yoga slim7 ryzen 7 4800u or intel i7-1065G7?
Hey Jarrod, is this model good for programming? I am thinking about this and want to ask you. Thanks 😊
Jarrod plz tell which 2 in 1 laptop should i get, i dont have an ipad and also need a new descent laptop. I just plan for very light gaming from time to time and i primary use is to study and use it to read books and make notes. Plz help
Budget is around 1000 usd
@@omcena This laptop lol
loved the review, one little ask though.. when reviewing business laptops like this can you make performance benchmark for developers like docker or VM's, as you know those kind of laptops are provided to developers because they don't have GPU's for obvious reasons.
I've heard that rams speed and type has an big impact on ryzen cpus so do you know sth about it or a comparison video?
I really wanted to buy this laptop, but the 16GB RAM model simply does not exist in the UK. 16GB of memory should be the minimum for any PC in 2020 to ship with considering web browsing alone will use almost all 8GB.
So it has 85 FPS on dota with integrated graphics? That’s good I will definitely buy it for university and a bit light gaming like league.
1:53 yuuuuuccccckkkkkkkk!!!!!
Would you recommend this for a developer? I'm looking for a thin and light portable ultrabook. Some light gaming (or cloud gaming) and watching movies. I was first looking at the 7pro with a better screen, but that won't ever be released..
Did you buy it? How it is for coding?
@@rasulali1435 yes! Perfect. Runs like a charm and stays quiet as well. It's a little smaller than I thought. So if the 15" dimensions are not insanely bigger, I might opt for that. But I do love the small size atm. I wanted a laptop where I can easily start any project wherever I'm sitting. Only 'downside' mine has is that it doesn't have a fingerprint scanner. But windows hello makes up for that
@@WOUUUTT thanks for replying. I will buy this 14" ryzen 4800u 16/512 model in two days. I will do just coding on it. I've heard that this model could come with lots of manufacture problems. Have you experienced any? Like coil whine sound or trackpad spring sound?
@@rasulali1435 definitely no trackpad. And no noticeable coil sounds either. But i'll need to check for the latter
@@WOUUUTT its good to hear that. I will check it at the store anyway. If you don't mind, I may reply to this comment after buying and lightly testing it for some tips and tricks.
I really wish they were in stock here in the United states -_-
is the ryzen 7 4700u variant worth it? cause in my country i cant find the 4800u one...
Who sells the 400 nit version How can I know because not all retailers advertise screen specs?
Thanks for this review. Imma buy one for my wife.
Is this better than the c940? I'm in desperate need of a laptop replacement tbh
what application did you use to check for the maximum brightness in nits
Finally! The elusive Ideapad Slim 7
104 degrees? I'm not comfortable with such high temperatures.
But that's what you get with 8 cores pushed to the max in a small chassis.
Where did you buy?
Awesome review
Hey, can u start testing WoW ?
Is the 8GB RAM worth buying? 🤔
There's a 15 in Lenovo slim gtx version that went up a few days ago on their website. Any thoughts on this?
I bought this yesterday, the screen brightness seemed very low..have sent it back to the store for checking. I dont know if it's a general issue with this device..or if its just my device
Did you buy it on Amazon? Or offline store?
@@kumu141 offline store , owned by a good friend..they have sent it to the company and asked for a new piece. But I doubt whether that will also be bright
is it possible to have two m.2 drives in this thing or only one at a time?
do they give a free upgrade to windows 11?
Will this laptop be available in United States market?
damn that laptop looks nice...but i need a gaming laptop. currently waiting for rtx 3070 to be implememted to gaming laptops
Bought one. Was OK. After about 5 days I decided to move the computer downstairs and closed the lid. Computer shut down but would not restart after opening. The computer is now deader than a door-nail. Lenovo Tech Support couldn't do anything so I returned it for a refund. Looking for something else now.
