I have this laptop and I didn't have an issue with the laptop lid or a quality issue with the trackpad, although the trackpad was somehow less close to the metal on one side(like I could see that it didn't touch the corner of the trackpad space).
I had an issue with build quality below the screen at the lid connector thing. It's not straight, and has noticeable bumps on it, but it didn't interfere with anything so I didn't send it to be fixed. Also the lid was about 0,5mm more on one side than the other. Also I have an issue with the ' key and it doesn't register until I bottom out. It's really annoying and I might go and ask the laptop to be repaired during my holiday, but I can't do it in middle of a schoolyear so I kind of regret not noticing it during the summer. The asterisk is with the key that has the issue and multiplication in Nspire is hard to use. Otherwise it's great.

for real, i don't understand why people still buy intel. I bought intel in 2011 when their chips were genuinely better than AMDs. still more expensive, but not nearly as over priced compared to AMD as they are today. Ryzen 7 the same price as their NEWEST 10 gen i5 10600k? it's a joke. I've since moved onto ryzen, on an Ryzen 5 2000 series chip and soon upgrading to Zen 3. I always hear the excuse "oh but intel still better for gaming" yeah, enjoy your extra 3 fps and less multi core performance for workstation tasks for an extra 80% of the cost. If people would smarten up and stop buying intel products, companies like lenovo and whoever else wouldn't care about what intel gave them and bribed them with. because no matter the bribe, no ones buying their product.

@UC8CWlyrh35Ka2Jllx2S_Ijg They've only recently started getting out of the hell Intel put them into. I love AMD and everything they do for consumers, even during their short comings. But, after intel engaging in anti competitive behavior to stunt AMD I'm surprised AMD has lasted as long as they did, seriously. kuddos to them. (which btw the lawsuit is going on to this day, EU fining them 1.4 billion dollars for anti competitive behavior against AMD) Intel paid off nearly every large computer manufacturer back in the 90s and early 2000's to only use their chips. hence why a lot of the big boys like dell have only used intels chips for decades. Glad that's changing, even a ginormous company like Apple is using radeon graphics in their imac and as much as i don't prefer apple products i'm glad to see it in there over Nvidia.

Yoga Slim 7 owner here: regarding the display, I almost returned this laptop because of it. It just felt too dim, both on battery and when plugged in. But this was an issue only on Windows 10, when I booted up Ubuntu, brightness was excellent and colors very vivid. So what I found out after quite a bit of searching is that AMD Radeon drivers come with a setting called Vari-Bright, under the Display section. This is on by default. It made my display dimmer than it actually is and disabling it solved my brightness issue. Honestly, AMD should just disable this option by default. I actually just submitted a bug report with them and hopefully they fix this. It's very misleading as this option is completely independent of Windows brightness settings.

U-series chips perform surprisingly closely to the H-series counterparts if adequately cooled. So, I would suggest that you buy based upon the form factor that you want and other factors. However, I don’t know that you can buy a laptop with a 4800U, at least not in the US.
From reviews, I believe that compiling generally benefits from extra threads. So, a 4800H will crush a 4700U. It would still beat a 4800U, but likely by no more than 20%, probably closer to 15%.

I used to sell AMD machines almost exclusively because of the cost savings to the customer... A friend who had a different build shop sold mostly Intel... He always said "Why educate customers on the benefits of AMD when customers are already happy to pay more for less performance with Intel." And that quote goes back to the 486 days.
And if his customers balked at the price... He would say, "AMD is fine, but if your work is mission critical you want Intel." Note... if your work is mission critical performance doesn't matter... and I watched him sell almost 100% Intel, with that line mostly to consumers who thought their CD drive was a cup holder. And yes, that is also a true story. He actually had a service call for a broken cup holder on one of his PC builds.

@@TheUltimateHacker007 Actually in the NYC metro area. For those of us who are familiar with technology, we often forget just how little people know about their hardware. You would be surprised how many PCs I've seen that barely had enough ram to boot up, much less do anything productive coming from less affluent neighborhoods. Dad wanted to get a computer for his kid and bought the cheapest one on the shelf. In as much as he didn't know what the PC was supposed to do, he bought one that pretty much couldn't do anything and of course the kid never "played" with it... So it's laying in my parts bin with a few dozen hours on it and no parts even worth salvaging.
Likewise, I've taken in PCs from more affluent areas that were very capable and used for nothing more than shopping at Amazon. These forks picked something from the high end of the lineup because they wanted to spend $2500.00 on a laptop, but had no actual need for it. Or maybe they ran into a salesman that was going for a bigger commission.
It's kind of like people who buy cars without knowing what VVT, dual clutch or CVT means. People walk into a dealership, tell the salesman how much they can spend and get lead like a hog to slaughter to their shiny new car. They may ask about Apple car play or heated seats, but they never ask what the head gaskets are made of or if the engine is an open or closed deck design.
The salesman says Intel is better, and they have heard the word Intel and there's a sticker on the box that says Intel and they are happy. Half the people buying PCs couldn't tell the difference between a CPU and a SSD if they swallowed one or the other. And if you ever start talking abut bus speed, cash size or DDR memory, just watch all of the eyes in any group of average people glaze over.
Over the 30+ years, I've been building and fixing PCs, I'm never surprised at how little people know about computers.
I once asked a friend who sold stereos back in the 1970's what his most popular stereo was, "It's the Electrophonic with the blinky lights." Now it's likely the PC with the most RGB leds.

The AMD mobile chips are in high demand and short supply right now, I know that HP had to cut a large majority of their amd laptops due to this. Lenovo probably has a similar issue going on. Got myself an HP Envy x360 15 inch with a 4500u and gotta say the performance with these AMD chips is superb. For $600 you get 6 cores as well as extremely decent onboard graphics. As a broke college student playing indie games in class on my old intel laptop was a laggy mess, but not anymore!

I've only seen models in the US and H US, Amazon US, Best Buy US or Costco US doesn't ship to Canada, especially with Covid going on. I'm really hoping it comes back in stock by November, if not I'm gonna have to get an Intel Tiger Lake laptop and even though the performance of the new intel chips look compelling, the Ryzen chips have more cores, are more efficient and are less expensive.

@HardwareCanucks The actual issue is the lack of stock for 4800U chips. This being an awesome laptop emphasizes this issue even further.
As soon as this laptop appeared in local stores and online retailers in my country, it was gone in matter of 1 or 2 days.
Lenovo hasn't been able to replenish their AMD stock, so that is probably the reason they removed it.

As you mentioned in this video, Lenovo actually doesn't have a lineup of laptops. It's seems, they just use components they can grab (cheap enough) on market and put a laptop together.
At my local store two comparable version of Lenovo IdeaPad3 are available: one has AMD 4500U built-in, and another one has Intel i5-10210U inside. Main difference: Intel version is 730€ and AMD is 630€ -at the end I bough AMD version. I just needed something to work on in case there are troubles when I make hardware changes on my PC.
Even Lenovo manual doesn't contain any specifications in regard of CPU -same manual covers about 25 different models. And if you're curious what's inside laptop, you need to Google for "machine type" number that match your laptop -and hopefully find what you need on Lenovo web pages (btw. I could find all necessary drivers & BIOS update).
Ok, my Lenovo laptop isn't something special to write about. However it has good performance for the money (prices in EU are higher than in US).

Lenovo has always hit home runs in keyboards.
I have the Ideapad 330 and the Thinkpad T440.
I love typing on both of them.

Got my Yoga slim 7, 4700U, 16GB ram and matte display for 800$ in Norway. So happy we got the the one with matte display, can't stand glossy in bright environments.

I was wondering about that. I see this version slim7 with matte display or you can get the Slim7 pro version with a higher 90hz 16:10 glossy display. Looks really slick, but you think matte is superior?

This is the model I have. I would have gone with a 512GB SSD to save some money. I paid more than you did, but that's Australia for you

@@rowandierich9823 ah I'd personally spend the little bit of extra money for the 1TB, but I use a ton of space (5TB on my desktop). Normal price was like €1200, but there was a nice discount :)

same thing happens with HP site in Canada, you can't find all the AMD 4700U or 4800U laptop models that are actually available for sale

I managed to get the 4700u version with 8GB of ram off of Amazon for $900 back in early August. It was the only one they had in stock. Definitely happy with the performance.

I got the 4700U version. A few remarks after watching your video: I can open the lid with one hand. I don't see a change in image quality when I unplug the PC. Left and right click the same, and the trackpad is very responsive, no latency. The speakers are not 'bassy' but you can definitely hear some bass. In other reviews the screen was well above 300 nits (I don't know about mine, but it seems adequate). I think your unit has some quality issues

Thanks for doing this video. I was going to buy my wife an Ideapad 3 17" and this video made me dig deeper. Come to find out there was a 4500U version last fall that they've discontinued that is 60% faster on the CPU passmark test then the Core i5. I found one and it's on it's way. I don't know why Lenovo discontinued the Ryzen 4000 series laptops but I'm happy I got one.

In China, Lenovo has so many Ultrabooks with 4800u and 2k screen in different inches, they dominate the laptop market under $700.

I have an intel version of this laptop, and I fixed the color issue when unplugged by using intel graphics command center and changing power efficiency from 6 to 1. Intel lowers the color accuracy to save power and amd probably has similar settings. It's really not lenovo's fault

Not sure what is going on with Ryzen 4000 Laptop CPU as we are forced to believe that this unavailability is due to Ryzen CPU supply shortage. But in other regions, Lenovo is releasing multiple Laptops with Ryzen 4000U series. The new S540-13ARR was released and reviewed with R7-4800U, which is a premium 13.3" Ultrabook with 2560x1500 HD+ 16:10 Display and Ryzen 7 4800U. Recently Lenovo France site even listed the new S540-13API model which can come with a Ryzen 7 4800H 45W TDP CPU, packed into a 13.3" chassis, weighting around 2.7 lbs. This S540-13 AMD models never even made it to North America and only Intel Whiskey Lake and Comet Lake versions are available. So, not sure if this is a Ryzen CPU supply shortage or something else.

I was looking to buy this in France. Where it's sold as Yoga. Everywhere I looked it was marked as unavailable. I thought it had something to do with the local market. Nope. Thanks for this video. As you say it has been discontinued and replaced with Intel CPU at less performance, higher price and temperature and less battery life. I am so annoyed by this that I ll just scrap Lenovo altogether. If they had issues with availability of parts they should have said so. This thing where they remove it like it was never a thing, after all this marketing, is treating customers as idiots.
